'Banjo Man'

RODERICK WALCOT'S
,folk musical, "Banjo Man',
St. Lucia's dramatic pre-
seltation for Carifesta, opens
at the Ursuline Convent.
Church Street. on Saturday
for a three-day run.
This Carifesta production
differs from earlier' stagings
in certain obvious. respects.;
Some of the actors are dif-
ferent. The set and costumes
designs are far more ela-
borate and there is an ex-
tensive (prologue as well as an
epilogue.
SThe most significant
change, however, is uncon-
soiously experienced in the
production as a whole. Earlier
productions were more in the
nature of a play with songs.
This production is a musical.
with the songs and dances
for4min.g an integral part of
the *action- : of -Bhe.- play,
heighteniing the dr&ia. -
Before, "Banjo Man" was
a stage in the evolution of
the St. Lucian musical folk-
comedy. Now "Banjo Man"
manages a further stage in
the process.
"One hopes that some.
other musical drama will
carry the process to a geafter
height," a note in th-e official
"Banjo Man" programme
Spreads.
