TUC says no

to Carifesta

THE Guyana Trades Union
Congress has rejected the
call from the Guyana Coun-
cil of Indian Organisations to
support the organisation in
its boycott of Carifesta, by
bringing about a dislocation
of work on the Carifesta site.
At its executive council
meeting on Wednesday night
the TUC instead suggested
that tie GCIO try t. .make
new approaches to govern-
ment with a view to resolv-
ing their dispute over the
use of funds from the Indian
Immigration Fund for the
building of: the cultural site
on D'Urban backlanas.
The TUC. in a letter to the
chairman of the- Guyana
Council of Indian Organisa-
tions. further explained that
so far as co-operation in
creating industrial disrup-
tion was concerned, it was
not in a position to do so
since none of its affiliates

had any collective bargain-
ing agreement with the con-
tractors aid, therefore was in
no position to call a strike.
"However," the letter went
on, "while we could, not-
withstanding this, take some
strong action, it would take
a much longer time to mio-
bilise such action."
And as a consequence of :
meeting earlier : this month
with officials from the Carl-
festa secretariat, the TUC
has also set up a special
Carifesta Committee to co-
operate with the secretariat
on ways and means in which
the labour movement could
play its role in the festival
scheduled for August.
The Carifesta Committee :s
headed by executive council
member Ernest Aicher and
both the Women's Auxiliary
and. the Trade Union Youth
Movement have been invited
to nominate a member each,
to serve on the committee.
