14 finalists

for Carifesta

theme song
DURING the past week in
Guyana at least 14 new songs
have been added to the re-
pertoire of locally composed
music. And the Police band-
room at Eve Leary was for
three days a scene of un-
usual liveliness as police-
men and civilians got to-
gether to present the new
tunes for public hearin-g

cord;rg sessions for 13 of the
34 finalists in the CARI-
FESTA '72 theme song com.
petition. From these entries
will be selected the melody
to be used throughout the
Caribbean for promotion of
the Caribbean Festival of
Creative Arts.
Over these hectic three
days--Wednesday. Thursday
and Friday-the popular Po-
Lice danceband under Ser-
geant Harry Whittaker (lead
guitar) rehearsed their Cari-
festa songs with each of the
composers and their vocal-
ists. The results have been
expertly taped by GBS re-
cording engineers.
The people of Guyana are
to have a direct voice in the
choice of the winning song
in this Carifesta contest.
These new compositions, are
to ba heard on radio during
the next fortnight. And at
month end a panel of 100
judges nominated by organ-
isations throughout the na-
tion will be assembled by
the Carifesta Secretariat to
listen together to all the fin-
alists and select by ballot the
one to be awarded the $300.
And this is still five months
before the creative geniuses
of 26 countries of the Carib-
bean and South America take
the stage in Georgetown for
Carifesta '72 to display
their cultural gems in music,
dance. drama. sculpture,
painting, photography,
poetry and other literary
