Speedy payment to

Carifesta drivers

IF THE REPORTED reluctance of Hire Car own-
ers and drivers to co-operate with the Carifesta Sec-
retariat in the conveying of visitors is based on a
genuine fear of delayed payment, the Secretariat
should act immediately to remove these fears.
We unhesitatingly say that we are in sympathy
with the Hire Car Owners and Drivers. If this
fear is genuine-probably based on past experiences,
it is within their interests to ensure that their busi-
ness does not suffer from delayed payments.
It should be similarly within the interest of
Carifesta that the organizers should see that those
who co-operated are speedily renumerated.
The significance and implications of Carifesta
are too tremendous for a breakdown of travelling
facilities at this time.
For three weeks Guyana will be on the inter-
national stage. The Carifesta Secretariat, along with
its various managers, has done a mighty or-
ganising the assembling here of the representatives
of 30 nations and an estimated 1,000 artists.
But the smooth organisation will depend, in
the final analysis, on reliable and well organised
facilities for travelling.
The established Hire Car Service is evidently
the most experienced and trustworthy travelling
facility to which the Secretariat can confidently en-
trust the job of conveying our guests.
Their demands for rapid payment are reason-
able. Even their request for the exemption of their
earnings from income tax is not beyond compro-
mise by a Government who is acutely aware of the
vital Importance of reliable travelling facilities to
the success of Carifesta.
It Is our view that Government should try
again to settle with the owners and drivers, rather
than face the unpleasant alternative of entrusting
the job of conveying to the amateur driver.
Moreover, an effort to settle the issue quickly
should reveal whether the refusal to co-operate by
the Hire Car Owners Is based on a genuine grouse
or there Is any- attempt by them to join some boy-
cotters as Is being suggested in some quarters.
