PPP will not

bovyott Carifesta

I EPUT Opposition I
Leader, Mr. Ram. Karran,
said yesterday that the Peo-
ple's Progressive Party was
not planning to boycott the
Caribbean Festival of Arts,
being organized by the Guy-
ana Government for August
next.
Mr. Ram Karran made
tths 'statement in reply to
a question whether the PPP
would respond .to the tall
by the Council of Indian
Organizations which is urg-
ing a boycott of Carifesta i
protest against what it has
described as the govern-
ment's "forcible seizure" of
the Indian Immigration
Fund.
The PPP official said that
he explained to a news
conference over the week-

end that while he could
appreciate the circum-
stances which led to the
Council of. Indian Organi-
sations to call for a boy.
cott, the PPP has made no
such decision.
"We still maintain that in
keeping with the position
taken by the Opposition
Leader, Dr. Cheddi Jagan,
the government is morally
obligated to reconsider its
decision and to call in the
Indian organizations for ne-
gotiations on how the
money in the Indian Immi.
gration Fund should be
spent."
'LOT OF FUSS'
| Mr. Ram Karran said that
"the government has always
made a lot of fuss about
consultative de m ocracy,
Why does it not want to
speak with the Indian re
ligious and cultural organi-
sations concerned with this
very sensitive matter."
So fr as Carifesta itself
was concerned, added MAr.
Ram Karran, we have al-
ways expressed our stand
against the very partisan ap-
proach being taken on na-
tional issues by this gov-
ernment. Carifesta, in the
circumstances of t o d a y's
realties in Guyana, can
hardly be a success. But the
PPP has not called for a
boycott."
