Report 12 prepared by the Division of Research
of the Florida State Department of Education.
The preparation of these reports is one phase in
the implementation of Florida's plan for improv-
ing statistical services of the State Department
of Education under the provisions of Title X,
National Defense Education Act.
NON-PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN FLORIDA
Research Report-16 provides statistical information on Non-Public Schools
in Florida and brings Research Report-12 up-to-date. Non-Public Schools in-
clude both denominational and nonsectarian schools offering elementary and/or
secondary instruction. Statistics on kindergartens are included only when
the kindergarten is an intergral part of a regular elementary school. Sepa-
rate kindergartens are not included.
This is a status report in that data are presented as of the end of the
first month of school for the 1961-62 school year. The list of Non-Public
Schools has been checked by County Superintendents for accuracy and complete-
ness. Still, mistakes probably have occurred in this report. Errors should
be called to the attention of Mitchell Wade, Director, Division of Research,
State Department of Education. This will enable corrections to be made in
future publications.
Only five schools failed to return the report blanks mailed out. There
is no way to include data for these schools or for other non-public schools
not on our mailing list.
The response and cooperation extended by principals and directors of
Non-Public Schools in answer to the request for information was outstanding.
Reports of first month personnel and enrollment data have been received
from 337 of the 342 schools on the current mailing list. This is a response
of 98.5 percent. A number of other schools responded but are excluded be-
cause they operate kindergartens only or have discontinued operation.
More than seven percent of the school children in Florida attend Non-
Public Schools. There were 83,126 pupils enrolled at the close of the first
month of school in the 337 schools reporting. Of these pupils, 57,856 were
in elementary grades (K-6), 25,065 were in secondary grades (7-12), and 205
were in schools classified as ungraded. Probably most of the pupils in un-
graded schools are of elementary age and could be classified as elementary
pupils.
The pupils attending Non-Public Schools were taught by 3,220 full-time
instructional personnel and h46 part-time instructional personnel. Non-in-
structional employees numbered 1,316 full-time and 308 part-time. Instruc-
tional personnel include such personnel as teachers, librarians, counselors,
and coaches. Non-instructional personnel include such employees as secre-
taries, custodians, bus drivers, and lunchroom workers.
Enrollment can be projected for the five schools not reporting on the
same basis as for the 337 schools for which reports are available. The
total enrollment in Non-Public Schools at the end of the first month of
school approaches 84,300 pupils with about 3,263 full-time instructional
personnel if such a projection is made.
Table 1 gives Non-Public School enrollment and personnel by county.
Table 2 gives a breakdown of the 337 schools reporting by number of pupils
enrolled.
A roster of Non-Public Schools is given on the following pages. This
listing is as complete as the information available permits. Schools are
listed by county. Other data include enrollment, number of instructional
personnel and non-instructional personnel, and sex of pupils enrolled. In
cases where no report has been received, only the name and address of the
school is given. The number of Non-Public Schools on this roster has grown
from 297 schools last year to 342 schools this year.
