The preparation of these reports is one phase in the
implementation of Florida's plan for improving sta-
tistical services of the State Department of Educa-
tion under the provisions of Title X, National De-
fense Education Act.

ANALYSIS OF MEMBERSHIP AT THE CLOSE

OF EACH MONTH OF SCHOOL 1959-60

The data on the enclosed tables are taken from Item 18, "Membership at
Close of Each Month of School," Principal's Annual Report on Attendance,
submitted to the State Department of Education for the 1959-60 school
year.

This is the third year that a complete tabulation has been made, A par-
tial analysis was made of 1956-57 data. It is still too soon to use these
data for conclusions as to the established pattern of growth in membership
in Florida Public Schools. However, some patterns are beginning to emerge.
Some of the more significant features of the last four year period are
given,

Table 1 gives, for a four year period, a comparison of the change in
membership at the close of each month of school from the membership at
the close of the first month.

Table 2 gives, for a four year period, the membership at the close of
each month of school expressed as a ratio or per cent of the membership
at the close of the first month of school.

Figures A and B express the data in Table 1 and Table 2 respectively in
graphic form.

Tables 3 and 5 show the change in membership at the end of each month
from the membership at the end of the first month, by race.

Tables 4 and 6 show the percentage change in membership at the end of
each month from the membership at the end of the first month, by race.

Table 7 gives, by race and by county, number and per cent of change in
membership from the close of 1958-59 to the end of the first month of
1959-60. This same table gives changes in average daily membership for
purposes of comparison,

The pattern of monthly membership appears to be similar for each of the
last three years, although there seems to be a "flattening out" of the
peak enrollment period. White schools closed the year with fewer pupils
than were in membership at the end of the first month.

For the 1959-60 year, one change stands out. For the first time, the net
increase between the end of the previous year and the end of the first
month was greater than the increase in average daily membership for the
last year, (See Table 7)
