ANALYSIS OF MEMBERSHIP AT THE CLOSE OF EACH MONTH OF SCHOOL 1958-59 RESEARCH REPORT 59-60-3 Prepared by State Department of Education Division of Administration and Finance Research and Statistics Section Thomas D. Bailey State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tallahassee, Florida 1959 Research Report 59-60-3 is the third of a series of statistical studies being prepared by the Re- search and Statistics Section of the Division of Administration and Finance of the Florida State Department of Education. The preparation of these reports is one phase in the implementation of Florida's plan for improving statistical services of the State Department of Education under the provisions of Title X, National Defense Education Act. The data on the enclosed tables are taken from Item 18, "Membership at Close of Each Month of School," Principal's Annual Report on Attendance, submitted to the State Department of Education for the 1958-59 school year. This is the second year that a complete tabulation has been made. A par- tial analysis was made of 1956-57 data. It is still too soon to use these data for conclusions as to the established pattern of growth in membership in Florida Public Schools. However, some patterns are beginning to emerge. Some of the more significant features of the last three year period are given. 1956-57 1957-58 1958-59 1. Table 2 gives, for a three year period, the membership at the close of each month of school expressed as a ratio or per cent of the membership at the close of the first month of school. Figures A and B express the data in Table 1 and Table 2 respectively in graphic form. Tables 3 and 5 show the change in membership at the end of each month from the membership at the end of the first month, by race. Tables 4 and 6 show the percentage change in membership at the end of each month from the membership at the end'of the first month, by race. Table 7 gives, by race and by county, number and per cent of change in membership from the close of 1957-58 to the end of the first month of 1958-59. This same table gives changes in average daily membership for purposes of comparison. The pattern of monthly membership appears to be similar for each of the last three years, although there seems to be a "flattening out" of the peak enrollment period. In 1958-59 the White schools closed the year with fewer-pupils than were in membership at the end of the first month. An analysis of ninth month drop-outs appears on page 16.
