Currently it has a county zoning of RS-3 en-US single family, three units per acre, and the proen-US -en-US posed city zoning would be C-3 General Commeren-US -en-US cial zone. The current future land use is Residential en-US Medium, which is three units per acre. Our proen-US -en-US posed future city land use would be GC, which is en-US General Commercial.en-US Board Member Bob Burdge cast the lone disen-US -en-US senting vote on the request and wondered why the en-US city would give the property much more intensive en-US zoning than St. Lucie County had on the land. en-USFORT PIERCE -The City Commisen-US -en-US sion serving as the Fort Pierce Redevelen-US -en-US opment Agency Board refused to reconen-US -en-US sider its May 21 rejection of both en-US development proposals for the H.D. en-US King Power Plant site, instead agreeing en-US June 18 to reissue the bids as soon as en-US possible. en-US The Commission had unanimously en-US rejected both the King Station Developen-US-en-US ment proposal of a 120-room Hampton en-US Inn and 23,000 square feet of retail space en-US and the RMA plan for a mixture of townen-US -en-US houses, apartments and a 105-room en-US unnamed hotel. Commissioner Rufus en-US Alexander had requested the Board en-US reconsider the vote and had expressed en-US frustration last month at its refusal to en-US accept either offer. The King Station en-US Development offer came with the cash en-US appraisal amount for the seven-acre site, en-US with the RMA proposal came with a en-US request to use Tax Increment Financing en-US funds.en-US Im not speaking out of turn, he said en-US May 21 when supporting the former en-US proposal. Im talking about theyre en-US going to present to the public something en-US that weve never had before, plus theyre en-US coming forth with $2.5 million. We wanted to take this data en-US and create an innovative, creative and en-US cost-effective campaign to capitalize on en-US this information, so the Tourism Office en-US launched the Share Your St. Lucie camen-US -en-US paign, stated Charlotte Bireley, director of en-US Tourism & Marketing for St. Lucie Counen-US -en-US ty.en-US The campaign not only incentivizes resen-US -en-US idents with great weekly prizes, but it also en-US creates a sense of pride of loving and en-US sharing where we live. en-US 3 TREASURE COAST The Florida en-USDepartment of Education released test en-US scores on June 14. In most cases, with a few en-US notable exceptions, Treasure Coast schools en-US showed improvement that mirrored stateen-US -en-US wide gains.en-US For the Florida Standards Assessmentsen-US English Language Arts, the statewide peren-US -en-US centage of students achieving a satisfactoen-US-en-US ry Level 3 score rose from 53 to 54 percent en-US from 2017 to 2018. en-US Indian River County remained under the en-US state average but showed a similar one point en-US increase from 51-52 percent. Martin County en-US was above the statewide average but showed en-US a decrease from 59-58 percent. St. Lucie en-US County was below the state average but en-US showed the greatest improvement on the en-US Treasure Coast, from 48-50 percent.en-US In mathematics, the statewide improveen-US -en-US ment was one point, from 59-60 percent.en-US Indian River showed the largest math en-US improvement in the area, rising from 56-59 en-US percent, but still one point below state averen-US -en-US age. St. Lucie rose two points from 52-54 en-US percent. Martin had the best passing rate by en-US far but the lowest improvement, rising from en-US 66-67 percent.en-US The statewide improvement was greatest en-US in grade 5 science, rising from 51-55 peren-US -en-US cent. Each Treasure Coast district showed en-US similar gains. Indian River rose from 48-54 en-US percent. Martin rose from 50-54 percent. St. en-US Lucie rose from 43-50 percent.en-US For grade 8 science, the statewide gain en-US was two points, from 50-52 percent.en-US Indian River tripled that improveen-US -en-US ment, rising from 47-53 percent. Martin en-US rose from 54-57 percent. St. Lucie rose en-US from 46-49 percent.en-US The social studies numbers were less conen-US -en-US sistent. In civics, the statewide scores en-US improved from 69-71 percent. But Indian en-US River showed a five point drop, from 70-65 en-US percent. Martin showed an above average en-US increase, from 71-79 percent. St. Lucie en-US increased two points from 69-71 percent.en-US In U.S. history, the statewide scores en-US improved from 67-68, but Martin dropped en-US one point from 75-74 percent, still far above en-US the state average. Indian River increased en-US from 69-70, and St. Lucie increased one en-US point also, from 62-63.en-US We applaud the work of our teachers and en-US students, said Indian River County Superen-US -en-US intendent Dr. Mark Rendell. A years worth en-US of teaching and learning are not necessarily en-US represented in these test scores, but they are en-US the measure that the state uses. We do have en-US reason to celebrate several areas of accomen-US -en-US plishment. Overall, as a district, our scores en-US improved in English Language Arts, Math, en-US and Science. Some of the increases were sigen-US -en-US nificant. For example, both 5th Grade and en-US 8th Grade Science saw increases of six en-US points. Probably the most impressive was a en-US 14-point increase in Algebra 1, which put us en-US above the state average. Our Curriculum en-US and Instruction Department focused on en-US some of these areas and it has paid off.en-US In St. Lucie County, Superintendent E. en-US Wayne Gent attributed the growth to the en-US individualized support students receive. I en-US commend our teachen-US -en-US ers, administrators, en-US and staff, Superinen-US-en-US tendent Gent said. en-US Overall, the vast en-US majority of our stuen-US-en-US dents are making en-US gains, and we are conen-US -en-US tinuing our positive en-US trends which is a en-US credit to our outen-US-en-US standing staff.en-US The Florida en-US Department of Eduen-US-en-US cation analyzed the en-US achievement gap en-US between African en-US American, Hispanic, en-US and white students. en-US Commissioner Pam Stewart said that in en-US grades 3-10, the percentage of African en-US American students passing the English Lanen-US -en-US guage Arts assessment increased by one peren-US -en-US centage point, while the percentage of Hisen-US -en-US panic students passing increased by two en-US percentage points. Both groups, Commisen-US -en-US sioner Stewart said, narrowed the achieveen-US -en-US ment gap with their white counterparts.en-US Commissioner Stewart said the percenten-US -en-US age of economically disadvantaged students en-US in grades 3-8 passing the Mathematics en-US assessments increased by two percentage en-US points, while African American students, en-US Hispanic students, and students with disen-US -en-US abilities each increased performance by one en-US percentage point. en-US In Algebra 1, Hispanic students increased en-US the percentage of students passing the en-USassessment by two percentage points. Ecoen-US -en-US nomically disadvantaged students increased en-US their performance by two percentage points, en-US and African American students and stuen-US -en-US dents with disabilities increased their peren-US -en-US formance by one percentage point.en-US In Geometry, Hispanic students increased en-US the percentage passing by four points. Ecoen-US -en-US nomically disadvantaged students increased en-US their performance by four percentage en-US points, and African American students en-US increased the percentage passing by three en-US percentage points.en-US For more information from the state en-US about the test results, visit accountability/en-US assessments/k-12-student-assessment/en-US results/2018.stml. en-US 4 the five public speakers encouraged the en-USBoard to solicit new bids in hopes of geten-US -en-US ting an even better project in the future. en-US Fort Pierce resident Ingrid Van Hecking en-US questioned the reasoning behind the en-US re-vote after the city held charrette after en-US charrette to get public input.en-US Why are we ready to just take anyen-US -en-US thing? she asked. If youre poor, you look en-US poor, you act poor, you are poor. Its shorten-US-en-US sighted to take the wrong deal.en-US Second Street resident Holly Tunes said en-US she lived about a block from the old power en-US plant and was upset upon hearing about en-US the potential reconsideration of the May en-US decision.en-US I think we deserve better as a city and en-US can get better as a city, she said. I think we en-US have an obligation as a city to do the best en-US we can, and putting out another RFQ is en-US probably my logical suggestion as the next en-US step. Theres no stigma in not taking two en-US bids that arent appropriate for the project.en-US Former City Commissioner Edward en-US Becht also spoke out, saying he was conen-US -en-US cerned about the lack of much advance en-US notice on the re-vote consideration and en-US urged the Board to continue with the re-isen-US -en-US suance of the bids. en-US I think the [re-vote] process is flawed en-US from a public perception point where I en-US dont know how you would move forward en-US tonight without a taint on it that doesnt en-US need to be on it, he said. I think we can do en-US better. Three years ago we couldnt get a en-US hotel there, we were looking at subsidized en-US housing. Whats happening in the real en-US estate market leads me to believe that if you en-US put this back out, youre going to get a beten-US -en-US ter project.en-US Downtown developer and business en-US owner Hans Kraaz admitted he would be en-US the only one to encourage the re-vote that en-US evening but thought both rejected proposen-US -en-US als were a positive sign.en-US We have a poverty level of 35 percent, en-US so for somebody to come in here and take a en-US chance, we should be jumping up and en-US down and doing jumping jacks, he said. en-US Ive watched the city do nothing but spend en-US money on that for the last few years. If we en-US do nothing now, Im sure even in the best en-US sense we wont start any kind of project for en-US at least three to five years.en-US Although she admitted having a favorite en-US of the two proposals last month, Mayor en-US Linda Hudson said she hoped at least the en-US two initial respondents would again en-US respond with a project more suited to what en-US the community wants. en-US I believe that I would be in favor of en-US going through the process yet again one en-US more time, she said. I know what our en-US chances are, and the two people that proen-US -en-US posed might get back in there and have a en-US better idea of what we want. You can find en-US out quickly what people want, but you cant en-US find out quickly what they dont want.en-US City Manager Nick Mimms then offered en-US a timeline if the Board decided to not revisen-US-en-US it the first two proposals and continue on en-US with the re-issuance of the bids. He also en-US hoped to include more input by the FPRA en-US itselfen-US We anticipate that by roughly 12 en-US months after issuance to have proposals, en-US he said. We want to have the FRRA Board en-US to be more inclusive in the process and to en-US have more input in the process. In October en-US 2019, we guestimate we can have a final en-US project for the redevelopment of that propen-US -en-US erty.en-US Commissioner Thomas Perona, who en-US made the initial motion to reject both proen-US -en-US posals May 21, said he believed the timeen-US -en-US frame may be even shorter.en-US I havent changed my mind one bit, he en-US said. Were not talking about years were en-US going to be postponing this, were talking en-US about six months. Ive already had two peoen-US -en-US ple contact me that already understand en-US better; I expect five or six proposers or en-US maybe even more.en-US Commissioner Alexander failed to comen-US-en-US ment during the meeting, preferring to lisen-US -en-US ten again to his colleagues debate the issue. en-US Commissioner Reginald Sessions, howeven-US -en-US er, said he didnt like the fact the FPRA en-US Board had not been more specific in its en-US original bid instructions and then rejecting en-US the proposals. en-US I walked out of here feeling I had made en-US a big mistake in terms of how I voted, he en-US said. We went out there and put it in writen-US -en-US ing and they came back and gave us the en-US best they had to offer, in terms of how we en-US advertised. I dont like the idea of having en-US Individuals spend the money, time and en-US effort, and they come before us on our en-US request and we tell them no.en-US The Board subsequently voted unanien-US -en-US mously to reissue the bids, and Commisen-US -en-US sioner Sessions gave his colleagues one en-US final warning. en-US Lets not skip a beat, and lets not deviate en-US a week, he said. This would help us out en-UStremendously with trying to pump someen-US -en-US thing into the economy over there.en-US Fort Pierce Utilities Authority Director en-US John Tompeck told that Board June 5 that it en-US had cost nearly $9 million to cleanup the en-US old H.D. The en-US solution is easy contact your representaen-US -en-US tives about your issues of concern.en-US The current U.S. administration and conen-US-en-US gress needs to answer to us, their constituen-US -en-US ents: that is their job: to represent the peoen-US -en-US ple who elected them. They need to be en-US accountable to us and to make sure that en-US happens, we have to be part of the solution. en-US Environmental and consumer protection en-US issues affect all of us. The Consumer Proen-US-en-US tection Bureau has gone the way of Pruitts en-US Environmental Protection Agency --en-US neglecting or forgetting the most important en-US part of the agencies titles: Protection. They en-US have not been doing their job. en-US We need to tell them (via phone, fax, mail, en-US email or in person) what we expect of them, en-US ask them: Will you be a voice and a force en-US for protection for consumers and for our en-US environment? Will you be holding Town en-US Hall Meetings? If so, when, where? If not, en-US why not? Town Hall Meetings are where en-US representatives actually meet and converse en-US with their constituents. Does your represenen-US-en-US tative do that?en-US13 State Constitution en-US amendmentsen-USThe first two times I saw the amendments en-US published in a local newspaper, I read en-US through the article twice once increduen-US-en-US lously the second more studiously and en-US took notes to try to understand what was en-US being proposed to no avail.en-US The June 15, 2018 edition of the Homeen-US -en-US town News was the third publication Ive en-US seen. There is no understanding or reasonen-US -en-US ing behind these proposals presented as en-US they are, other than to confuse, obfuscate, en-US and trick voters into voting for some things en-US / rules no one wants, and no legislator wants en-US to be blamed for. This is an example of goven-US -en-US ernment at its worst.en-US I STRONGLY urge every voter to vote en-US NO on all 13 items. None of these need to en-US be elevated to the level of incorporation into en-US the states constitution, but should be en-US addressed individually by the legislature, en-US where each elected official must take a puben-US -en-US lic stand for or against each item. Vote en-US NO to the process which only serves to en-US benefit, via power and/or money, to a few, en-US and takes rights / power away from the peoen-US -en-US ple of the state of Florida.en-USWhy set up even en-US more new homes?en-USI find it ironic that the City Council of en-US Sebastian just agreed to increase the Equivaen-US -en-US lent Residential Unit (ERU) for double the en-US current rate without any proven statistics to en-US justify that increase. They claim that the en-US infrastructure needs to be repaired, in the en-US near future, then vote to add 500 new homes en-US to these storm drains they claim need repair.en-US As for the building of new homes in en-US Sebastian I am not aware of any follow up en-US on the inspection or relocation of any en-US Gopher Tortoises in my neighborhood en-US where several new homes have been built. en-US The contractors just came in with their bull en-US dozes and plowed all the foliage and trees en-US down. Now, Sebastian has approved zoning en-US for another 500 new homes. What are they en-US thinking? Drive down most streets in Sebasen-US -en-US tian and you will find many older homes for en-US sale. Some of these homes have been for sale en-US for months and/or years. Drive around and en-US you will see many vacant areas where develen-US -en-US opments were started and left unfinished. en-US We have many empty or nearly empty strip en-US malls and Sebastian is allowing new strip en-US malls be constructed. From my perspective en-US the only ones who benefit from all this en-US needless construction are the construction en-US companies and the City of Sebastian. Maybe en-US it's time for the people we elected to repreen-US -en-US sent us give us a say in what they seem to en-US think is good for our community.en-USUse bats and en-US fish against pestsen-USThe rain has been good for mosquitoes. en-US But our first line of defense should not be en-US poisoning the environment.en-US Make sure there is no standing water in en-US the neighborhoods. Ponds can be stocked en-US with fish (e.g., Gambusia) that eat mosquito en-US eggs and larvae. en-US Put up a bat house. One bat can eat more en-US than 1,000 mosquitoes in one night. Poison en-US should be the last and little used option.en-USSomeone else's life en-US depends on you driving safeen-USDriving in Florida has added to my en-US peeves.en-US Making a stop at a "stop" sign means you en-US stop before the sign then proceed with cauen-USen-UStion.en-US The rod on the left side of the steering en-US wheel is your turn signal. Most Florida driven-US-en-US ers don't know it exists.en-US To all our "disabled persons" with a parken-US -en-US ing identification permit you place on your en-US mirror: if you read it, it states "remove en-US before driving vehicle." This is so it does not en-US block your vision.en-US As far as MPH signs . no one reads them. en-US They drive at what ever speed they want.en-US I could go but I'll end by saying drive safe en-US . someone's life depends on you.en-USHometown News keeping it localen-USThank you so much for the Hometown en-US News. The en-US psyllid acquires the bacteria when it feeds en-US on bacteria-infected plants, and the disease en-US spreads when a bacteria-laden psyllid flies en-US to a healthy plant and injects the bacteria en-US into it as it feeds. en-US 9 en-USYoure going to one of the highest zoning en-US levels, Commercial General, with the City of en-US Fort Pierce, and thats a pretty broad and en-US pretty hefty increase in usage, he said. Was en-US there any justification of that happening as en-US compared to past practice, which has always en-US been bringing it in comparable to what it en-US currently is in the county?en-US Mr. Gilmore claimed city staff did take en-US that fact into account before making a recen-US-en-US ommendation.en-US We also take into account that it is conen-US -en-US tiguous to zoning that is the same, and as en-US you can see to the west, there is that [Comen-US -en-US mercial General] zoning, so we try not to en-US encourage spot zoning, he explained. So en-US thats part of the reason why were recomen-US-en-US mending for the C-3 General Commercial.en-US Mr. Burdge particularly worried that the en-US city would set a negative precedent for nearen-US -en-US by county landowners to suddenly rush in en-US for the same exact treatment upon volunteer en-US annexation due to the higher market value en-US of commercially zoned land.en-US If surrounding areas are at a higher level en-US and people want to come in and annex, they en-US can go from a very low-level density to a en-US higher usage immediately without any conen-US-en-US ditions placed upon the property or any type en-US of reasoning other than they want General en-US Commercial? he asked. en-US Fort Pierce Planning Director Peggy Groen-US -en-US hall fielded that question, claiming the suren-US -en-US rounding area was already compatible with en-US such zoning. Chick-fil-A Inc. is building a en-US new 4,989-square-foot restaurant immedien-US-en-US ately across Okeechobee Road from the proen-US -en-US posed annexation site. en-US We evaluate each and every annexation en-US based upon the applicants goals and how the en-US area around it is responding to developen-US -en-US ment, she said. You will notice that theres en-US Commercial General to the north as well as en-US to the west in that neighborhood, and we see en-US a lot of growth potential happening on Jenen-US-en-US kins Road. This is an opportunity to bring en-US this property -which isnt currently en-US annexed into the city -the requested C-3 en-US Zoning, and we agreed that it was a compatien-US -en-US ble zoning.en-US The dissenting Board member then quesen-US-en-US tioned the planning staff about the property en-US immediately to the south of the nearly seven-US -en-US en-acre parcel. Mr. Gilmore admitted the en-US land in question still had R-2 single-family en-US zoning on it, a fact that Mr. Burdge said conen-US -en-US firmed his point. en-US So in changing this as its annexed in, en-US theres going to be a major impact on that en-US particular property thats R-2, as compared en-US to if it was to come in as R-3 or R-2 itself or en-US comparable to what it currently is in the en-US county, the latter exclaimed. en-US Planning Board Chairman Frank Creyaufen-US-en-US miller then emphasized the lone residentialen-US -en-US ly zoned property on South Jenkins Road en-US was sandwiched presently between the en-US property thats in question for annexation en-US and the church on Jenkins Road. en-US My guess would be is that if you were en-US looking for a location to build a home, you en-US probably would not want to build it there, en-US he said. en-US The Fort Pierce City Commission had en-US tackled the same issue the week prior, giving en-US its unanimous approval June 4 for a zoning en-US change on 45 acres north of Samuel Gaines en-US Academy from Low Density Residential to en-US General Commercial to permit the conen-US-en-US struction of an 80,000-square-foot Camping en-US World facility on Jenkins Road. The Planen-US -en-US ning Board had also unanimously recomen-US -en-US mended approval of the zoning change May en-US 8 in spite of some local opposition.en-USJenkinsen-USFrom page 1en-USBeware of scammers!en-USIen-USt seems like just when you think youve en-US got things figured out, the scammers go en-US and change the rules! An alarming trend en-US lately in computer scams is the growing en-US practice of actual 800 support numbers en-US connecting you to people overseas intent on en-US scamming you out of your money rather en-US than to qualified support people who even en-US work for the company that you are calling. en-US What I mean is I am seeing a lot more en-US instances of people having problem with a en-US product or service and then calling the 800 en-US number for that company that is listed on en-US their website or on their bill or whatever but en-US instead of getting somebody that works for en-US that company, they get someone who en-US immediately start steering the caller into en-US the old Oh, your computer has been en-US hacked and is infected with malware. en-US speech.en-US No, it hasnt been hacked, no it isnt en-US infected with malware and no, you dont en-US work for XYZ company! If a call ever goes en-US in this direction, hang up or you are about en-US to get scammed. en-USOne on my callers was relating to me an en-US incident where he was having a problem en-US getting his video streaming device to en-US connect to his WiFi. Now this is one of en-US those little things that plug into your TV en-US it had nothing to do with his computer en-US whatsoever but that seemed to be lost on en-US the guy on the other end of the phone who en-US immediately began insisting that his en-US computer was hacked and loaded with en-US malware and they would need to clean it en-US before that could continue. en-US It used to be a pretty good rule of thumb en-US that if you made the call, you were safe. For en-US instance, if you get an email from the en-US bank telling you your account has a en-US problem, you call the bank yourself you en-US dont deal with it over email. Calling them en-US yourself carries a good faith assumption en-US that the number you are calling is actually en-US going to get you to the company you are en-US trying to call rather than scammers. It en-US makes it feel safer to disclose private non en-US public information. When a big company en-US puts an 800 support number on their en-US website that leads to one of these scammers en-US it makes it that much easier to fall prey. en-US Another trend that has been making the en-US rounds on the internet is the tainted link en-US that brings you to a fake blue screen error en-US with a bunch of technical mumbo jumbo en-US and an 800 number to call. The page tries to en-US tell you your machine has suffered from a en-US critical error or some such but the big en-US giveaway is the 800 number no legitimate en-US Windows or Blue Screen Error ever ever en-US ever displays a phone number! en-US If one day you are surfing the web, maybe en-US checking email and suddenly your browser en-US shows an alarming error message, you cant en-US click out of it, you cant close it and there is en-US a phone number to call to get it fixed, dont en-US fall for it! If you do they will attempt to en-US separate you from as much money as they en-US can talk you out of. en-US But whats a guy to do? You cant click en-US out, you cant close it, the message says bad en-US things will happen if you turn it off, so how en-US do you get out of it when your machine gets en-US stuck like this?en-US Well first, remember the message itself is en-US a scam. That means you cant trust anything en-US in the message so its unlikely anything bad en-US will happen if you reboot. en-US Rebooting will shut everything down and en-US reset everything (essentially) and that en-US should break you out of that loop but it en-US doesnt have to be that sloppy. You can use en-US the task manager to kill the stuck window en-US can that should break you out of the loop en-US and allow you to regain control of the en-US machine. To launch task manager, right en-US click on the task bar at the bottom of your en-US Windows desktop and then left click Start en-US Task Manager in the little pop up window. en-US Then, in Task Manager, find the browser en-US window in the list of running applications, en-US highlight it and click the End Task button. en-US You can usually find the right item in the en-US list of running applications because it will en-US have the offending webpages name listed en-US next to your browsers icon. en-US Once you end the task you should see the en-US browser window finally close and you can en-US now reboot gracefully with a normal shut en-US down and restart. en-US Sean McCarthy fixes computers. It is by no en-US means legal, and most golf purists frown on en-US the use of such a thing. This past weekend, en-US the United States Golf Association took en-US one, and we should be thankful for it. en-US The U.S. Open was held this past week en-US out on Long Island at Shinnecock Hills Golf en-US Club. In typical USGA fashion, the course en-US was difficult and penal to those who strayed en-US from the fairways, found bunkers or missed en-US the greens. In typical USGA fashion, there en-US were also some ridiculous things done to en-US the course all in the name of protecting en-US par.en-US Saturdays round began rather benignly en-US for those playing early. The breeze was en-US light, the air was cool and there was not a en-US cloud in the sky. Then lunchtime came and en-US it all went to hell.en-US The winds picked up and the course en-US began to dry out. Balls hit down the en-US fairways were getting too much roll and en-US winding up in the rough. And if you know en-US U.S. Open rough, you know what that does en-US to scoring.en-US Worse still, the greens began to dry out en-US and get crusty as some players put it. The en-US grass began to turn brown and putts began en-US to roll and roll and some even rolled off the en-US greens.en-US As the afternoon rolled on, things en-US continued to get worse. In an event where en-US par is considered a good score, just carding en-US a bogey on some holes became the quest. en-US Tony Finau and Daniel Berger started the en-US day 11 shots behind the leaders and were en-US fortunate to have made the cut. The pair en-US each shot 66 and at days end were atop the en-US leaderboard and playing in the final pairing en-US on Sunday.en-US How difficult was the afternoon? Rickie en-US Fowler shot 84. Dustin Johnson, the leader en-US by four shots entering the weekend en-US bogeyed six of his first eight holes. Even en-US Phil Mickelson was not immune to the en-US severity of the playing conditions, putting a en-US moving ball to keep it from rolling off the en-US green. Lefty wound up with a 10 on that en-US hole, and his round of 81 is his worst at the en-US U.S. Open. By days end, the entire field was en-US over par.en-US By design, the U.S. Open is intent on en-US being the toughest test in golf, both en-US mentally and physically. The USGA loves to en-US test the mental stability of the field by en-US setting up a course that will make you grind en-US out pars and bogeys, and even make you en-US angry. It has always been a test like no en-US other. en-US Many players complained about some of en-US the pin positions. As the day wore on, you en-US could tell that the USGA had made a mess en-US of a few holes with where the holes were en-US cut. The greens at Shinnecock Hills were en-US designed at a time en-US when no one thought en-US of making them play en-US this hard and roll this en-US fast. en-US After the round en-US however, the USGA en-US did something en-US surprising. They en-US listened and didnt en-US just sit back and en-US laugh at the players en-US struggling to play a en-US game close to golf as en-US we know it come en-US Sunday. Usually this en-US is where they really put the screws to en-US everyone, sit back and toast a glass to the en-US carnage.en-US Instead the USGA watered the course. en-US They watered the greens to keep them from en-US truly becoming browns. The course wasnt en-US allowed to turn into cement. They set pins en-US in places where, if the winds picked up en-US again, you could still hope to keep a putt on en-US the green. They made the course manageen-US -en-US able.en-US Sunday rolled around and the course was en-US still tough, but it was manageable. It bit en-US those who hit loose shots or missed greens en-US and fairways. Thankfully, it rewarded good en-US shots and players had chances to hold en-US greens, make putts and move up the en-US leaderboard instead of waiting for some to en-US fall.en-US It was a great final round. Tommy en-US Fleetwood just missed a birdie at the last en-US that was for a round of 62. No one has ever en-US gone so low at a U.S. Open. Patrick Reed en-US charged up the leaderboard, making five en-US birdies in his first seven holes.en-US In the end we saw history. West Palm en-US Beachs Brooks Koepka became only the en-US seventh player to successfully defend his en-US U.S. Open title. His round of 68 came en-US thanks to a hot putter that saved his several en-US times on the back nine.en-US Lets hope that the USGA has learned en-US something from its mulligan. While we en-US want to see players tested, we dont want the en-US entire thing to fall apart into something not en-US even resembling golf. en-US James Stammer has been an avid golfer en-US and golf enthusiast for nearly 40 years. Valid through 6-29-18 S en-USometimes, the small places are easiest en-US to overlook, particularly when theyre en-US off the beaten path or more than a few en-US minutes off the interstate. My wife Gloria en-US and I had only once or twice driven up U.S. en-US 1 from Sebastian to Melbourne and only en-US vaguely remembered the highway skirting en-US the eastern edge of the Indian River and en-US being able to see across to the barrier island. en-US Something told me the area held a special en-US charm, and we finally got to experience that en-US when we spent a recent weekend at Capt en-US Hirams Resort nestled along the western en-US shore of the Indian River Lagoon. en-US Although there are other places to lodge en-US in Sebastian, Capt Hirams is one of only a en-US very few that actually have rooms overlooken-US -en-US ing the enchanting waterway, where we en-US enjoyed awesome sunrises on both mornen-US -en-US ings from our balcony. Our room lay just a en-US minutes walk from the Sandbar Beach Club, en-US a little bit of the Bahamas and a slice of the en-US Caribbean wedged in the northeast corner en-US of Indian River County. This open-air en-US tropical complex is one massive beach party en-US for those who love the coast, and it takes on en-US a whole new sizzle in the evenings with its en-US nightly entertainment. There are even a en-US couple of tables and stools down in the en-US shallow part of the Lagoon for those who en-US just cant seem to drag themselves out of the en-US water long enough for a drink or snack. It en-US was there at Capt Hirams Adventure Center en-US that we checked out our tandem kayak for a en-US short paddle in the river our first morning en-US (included with the resorts $5 per person, en-US per night resort fee, along with bicycles and en-US paddleboards). The fascinating thing about en-US kayaking off the coast of Sebastian is that en-US kayakers can actually choose a destination. en-US This part of the Indian River Lagoon is en-US dotted with numerous sandy islands perfect en-US for a picnic or overnight camping. Although en-US Gloria is not much of a kayaker (I introen-US -en-US duced her to the sport in Miami many years en-US ago), we did manage to make it to the closest en-US islet, locally referred to as Shipwreck Island, en-US probably due to at least one of the derelict en-US vessels we noticed cast upon the glittering en-US white sand. We briefly stepped ashore for en-US photographs before making the short paddle en-US back to the resort. en-US The most charming part of the Sebastian en-US waterfront is its extreme walkability. This is en-US one of the very few non-urban places where en-US weve been able to park the car for the en-US weekend and forget it. Most of Sebastians en-US downtown area attractions are within easy en-US walking distance. Early the first morning en-US after photographing the sunrise, I headed en-US out walking on Indian River Drive in both en-US directions to see what was within easy reach en-US of the resort. Of course I passed several en-US waterside restaurants featuring massive en-US decks overlooking the tranquil waterfront, a en-US handful of public piers and decks extending en-US out over the water and some very unique en-US sculptures and monuments around en-US Riverview Park. en-US 15 en-USaway, a small but fascinating tribute to the en-US man who helped put the treasure in en-US Treasure Coast. I also passed by Earls en-US Hideaway Lounge & Tiki Bar, a hugely en-US popular open-air spot with the motorcycle en-US crowd, seemingly day and night. en-US After freshening up from our morning en-US exploration, we headed back to the Advenen-US -en-US ture Center to pick up our tickets for Capt en-US Hirams River King Dolphin Watch Cruise. en-US Now you really cant force wildlife to appear en-US on command, but this tour of the Indian en-US River and the Sebastian Inlet lived up to its en-US name and more. Not only did we see en-US multiple pods of dolphins and a sea turtle, en-US but we actually came upon a herd of en-US manatees (shockingly in mid-June!) en-US frolicking and cavorting near one of the en-US islands. The tour took us within site of the en-US Sebastian Inlet State Park where we saw en-US motorhomes and camping trailers parked en-US on the shores of the Lagoon, and close en-US enough to the A1A Bridge over the inlet to en-US take pictures. Although it was a mid-day en-US cruise, the wind blowing through the en-US covered vessel kept us comfortably cool, and en-US we both agreed the two-hour River King en-US was one of the longest such water tours we en-US have experienced. en-US One of the most amazing things for us in en-US Sebastian was the variety of water views in en-US almost every direction. We had breakfast en-US every morning at the resorts Blackfins en-US Riverfront Grill, where we gazed out at the en-US harbor and Shipwreck Island in the en-US background. The restaurant is open for en-US three meals a day, and meals are also served en-US in the afternoons and evenings at the en-US Sandbar Beach Club.en-US Our first evening in Sebastian we dined at en-US the Mo-Bay Grill, a little piece of Jamaica en-US plopped down into the heart of Sebastian. en-US Owner Wesley Campbell cut his culinary en-US teeth on the island of his birth before en-US making a name for himself in Washington en-US D.C. for his personal take on Jamaican en-US cuisine. Named after his hometown of en-US Montego Bay, the restaurant offers a wide en-US variety of cuisine, both Jamaican and en-US otherwise, all accompanied by views of the en-US river through massive windows. We started en-US off with Green Herb Steamed Mussels as an en-US appetizer, whose tomato and garlic broth en-US was so savory we dipped the garlic toast in en-US it. While Gloria ordered one of our favorites, en-US Oxtail Stew, I ordered the Jerk Stuffed en-US Chicken Breast, filled with sauted mushen-US -en-US rooms and spinach. Mr. Campbells recipe en-US finally helped me overcame my fear of the en-US Scotch bonnet peppers and allspice that give en-US jerk spice its kick. Mo-Bays take on the en-US popular brown sauce was truly tasty, and the en-US sweet heat only served to compliment the en-US poultry. Both dishes were served with a en-US unique combination of sauted broccoli, en-US cabbage, carrots and green beans. For en-US dessert, we shared one of the best slices of en-US coconut pie Ive had outside of the Deep en-US South. en-US The next afternoon after our cruise, we en-US walked down to Squid Lips Overwater Grill en-US for a late lunch. I had noticed this unique en-US eatery during my early morning walk, en-US perched between two piers on pilings above en-US the river. What makes it even more special is en-US that its open on three sides to the elements, en-US so when we sat down at the table, we looked en-US over the wall of the restaurant and saw en-US catfish swimming below. Even though we en-US saw no way to really air condition the place, en-US the ceiling fans and cross breezes from the en-US north, south and east kept us comfortably en-US cool. Here we started out with the savory en-US Smoked Fish Dip, accompanied by the en-US restaurants own yummy Pineapple Coconut en-US Bimini Bread (our server Anita offered us en-US more, but I knew better or Id never finish en-US my flounder stuffed with lobster/crab meat en-US dressing. Gloria opted for the healthy en-US sounding Grilled Grouper glazed with en-US honey-lime sauce that had the tantalizing en-US taste of the grill in every bite. For dessert we en-US shared a piece of Mikes Key Lime Pie, en-US probably the most decadent form of this en-US dessert Ive ever eaten. en-US For lunch the next day, we headed just a en-US few steps away to The Crab Stop, a new spot en-US on the river thats an outgrowth of a en-US Downtown Vero Beach restaurant of the en-US same name. en-US Here we dined on the shady, open-air en-US deck overlooking the water, beginning our en-US experience with Fried Snow Crab, a en-US steaming chunk of the Alaskan crustacean en-US that is breaded and deep-fried before en-US serving. For an entre, Gloria opted for the en-US Scallop Snack Pack, a savory bowl of en-US steamed scallops, shrimp and boiled en-US red-skin potatoes, which we found to be en-US absolutely scrumptious. I ordered the en-US unique Caribbean Seafood Rice, the owners en-US take on a Cajun jambalaya with a similar en-US kick, a mixture of shrimp, sausage and crab en-US meat served in a grilled pineapple. I also en-US sampled one of the restaurants famed garlic en-US crabs and now know why theyre one of the en-US most popular dishes. For dessert, we en-US munched on corn fritters topped with en-US powdered sugar, which were very similar to en-US beignets, another of my New Orleans en-US favorites. en-US Of course, you cant leave Sebastian en-US without seeing the relics pulled off the en-US nearby sea floor by one of the worlds most en-US famous shipwreck salvagers, Mel Fisher. en-US Now run by his granddaughter, this small en-US but very interesting museum is dedicated to en-US his lifes work of uncovering the treasure and en-US relics from Spanish vessels on the bottom of en-US the ocean. Here you can actually see gold en-US and silver coins and relics from the 1715 en-US Fleet that sank during a hurricane off the en-USSebastian Inlet. Youll also find Colombian en-US emeralds and gold and silver coins minted en-US during the time of the Conquest, with some en-US relics even available for purchase. Be sure en-US and watch the 20-minute introductory video en-US that describes the treasure hunters early life en-US and his success in raising up the treasure en-US from Nuestra Seora de Atocha, his most en-US famous discovery of a vessel that sank in en-US 1622 west of the Florida Keys. en-US Shortly before leaving town our final day, en-US we hopped in the car and drove to the en-US Village Square, a unique shopping and en-US dining complex on the west side of U.S. 1 en-US near Main Street. Here Gloria browsed the en-US unique jewelry and clothing at Addicted 2 en-US Stuff, where she found bought a blouse and en-US a handmade bracelet, both at very reasonen-US -en-US able prices. en-US Weekend Wanderer is written by en-US award-winning travel and feature writer en-US Donald Rodrigue.
