en-US 4 en-USST. LUCIE COUNTY en-US Diamonds are a girls best friend, at least according to en-US Marilyn Monroe.en-US But she had no idea the brilliant gems could also foster en-US relationships and save thousands of lives in a community.en-US Thats what has happened with a single necklace, donated en-US by local jeweler Greg Childress, and the women who have en-US shared it and her mission with the Treasure Coast for the en-US past three-years.en-US The birth of a fundraiser like no other:en-US At a charity luncheon a few years ago, table mates told en-US local writer and IRSC instructor Wendy Dwyer about a en-US book they were reading called The Necklace, by Cheryl Jaren-US -en-US vis, which chronicled 13 California women who had deciden-US -en-US ed to jointly purchase a $40,000 diamond necklace and en-US share in its ownership.en-US A true story, Ms. Jarvis takes the reader through the jouren-US -en-US ney of how what started off as a social experiment, ended up en-US transforming the womens lives. Reading the book gave en-US Wendy an idea.en-US She approached Childress with the idea that he might en-US donate a diamond necklace, and she approached Sydney en-US Liebman, then Director of Development for the St. Lucie en-US County Health Access Network, or more commonly known en-US as the HANDS Clinic with the idea that shed gather 12 en-US women who would be willing to share the necklace for a en-US year and each of them host events and bring new-found en-US awareness of the clinic to the public. Each woman selected en-US to participate in this very special campaign would agree to en-US raise a minimum of $1,000 each.en-US Because there are more than 72,000 uninsured adult resien-US -en-US dents of St. Lucie County. Raising awareness of the clinic en-US was just as vital as raising the much-needed funds.en-US Nicknamed Jewelia in honor of the original necklace en-US worn by the women in California, the St. Lucie Jewelia made en-US her debut on March 7, 2015. en-US Success:en-US Expecting to raise about $25,000, a year later, it was en-US announced that more than $217,139 had been raised by the en-US women involved in the projects first year, which included en-US Wendy Dwyer, Bunny Webb, Pat Alley, Jennifer Strawn, en-US Maria Seidel, Sandee Allen, Jeannette Weiss, Cris Adams, en-US Tia Adkins, Veronica Tempone, Sue-Ellen Sanders, and Mia en-US Batalini. en-US Each of the 12 women used her skills, ingenuity, talents, en-US and creativity to raise awareness and funds. Many hosted en-US special events, including Sandee Allens Little Black Dress en-US that featured a male fashion show, the likes of which the en-US Treasure Coast has never before seen. There were dance en-US parties, fashion shows, dinners, quarter auctions, cocktail en-US parties, photo shoots, Bingo parties, and there was even a en-US scavenger hunt at Heathcote Botanical Gardens.en-US The clinic:en-US HANDS of St. Lucie County provides access to free en-US healthcare and a continuum of care to qualified, low-inen-US -en-US come, uninsured, adult residents of St. Lucie County. Seren-US -en-US vices include primary, vision, and dental care, along with en-US mental health assistance. The HANDS Clinic is a Volunteers en-US in Medicine affiliate; all physicians, dentists, and counselors en-US are volunteers. Patients are not charged for services. The en-US clinics operating budget is solely supported by private donaen-US-en-US tions and awarded private grants.en-US For additional information about the HANDS Clinic, en-US please call (772) 462-5646.en-USBook-inspired campaign raises money for clinicen-USBy Wendy Dwyer and Sydney Liebmanen-USFor Hometown News en-USCity Planning Director Rebecca Grohall en-US informed the Commission that other nearby en-US parcels had gone through the same process en-US in recent years.en-US The parcel thats just below was en-US rezoned in a similar process, she said. en-US Thats the 75 acres that Precast Concrete en-US [owned], and we did the same sort of effort en-US a year and half ago where we moved it from en-US the countys Industrial Heavy category back en-US to the citys Industrial Heavy category.en-US Land planner Dennis Murphy with Fort en-US Pierce-based Culpepper and Terpening repen-US-en-US resented the purchaser, BHG Properties en-US Group LLC of Tampa, during the quasi-juen-US-en-US dicial hearing and described the request as a en-US simple conversion. en-US As is pointed out, this essentially is a en-US housekeeping matter where we simply get en-US the property classified to the nearest comen-US -en-US patible zoning designation with the city, he en-US said. The compatible zoning designation en-US with the city is I-3: Thats the question that en-US we have in front of us right now.en-US Only two area residents spoke during the en-US hearing, both of them expressing concerns en-US about the continued negative environmental en-US impact such zoning would have on the en-US property. One of those was Midway Road en-US resident Bud Wild, who had asked city staff en-US to come out and view debris he said was left en-US by the current owner and former operator of en-US a citrus juice plant on the site. en-US Its my firm belief that this property en-US along the banks of Ten mile Creek should en-US no longer be zoned heavy industrial since en-US the parcel borders and contains a portion of en-US the creek, he said. The old zoning classifien-US -en-US cation has proven to be too intensive. It en-US allows for the potential for environmental en-US damage like that which has already occurred en-US on this site. Light industrial or commercial en-US is a better fit.en-US Mr. Wild asked the Commission to delay en-US the process due to a large debris pile he said en-US lay hidden by overgrown pepper trees and en-US potato vines at the creeks oxbow until a en-US few weeks ago.en-US This propertys in rough shape and may en-US contain other hidden surprises, he added. en-US There might be some unknown reason why en-US Cargill, the owner, did not obtain a demolien-US -en-US tion permit and failed to remove all those en-US foundations in 2006. Why not wait and give en-US this important process a chance to play out en-US before any rezoning is considered?en-US Ms. Grohall told commissioners she reguen-US-en-US larly consults with the St. Lucie County en-US Environmental Resources Division on such en-US issues and that Code Enforcement personen-US -en-US nel who visited the property recently with en-US Mr. Wild had already issued Cargill several en-US citations.en-US I believe as of today they have written en-US seven different citations for different things en-US that have occurred on that site, she said. en-US Most of them go back to demolition withen-US -en-US out a building permit, but Im competent en-US our Code Enforcement group is going to en-US work through those issues with the property en-US owner much the same as they would with en-US any other types of property violations.en-US Assistant County Attorney Katherine en-US Barbieri also spoke as a private citizen en-US during the hearing, saying that she and her en-US family lived nearby and had concerns about en-US both the environment and potential flooden-US -en-US ing from runoff associated with the tribuen-US-en-US tary.en-US We live downstream of where this is, and en-US we are concerned about what the environen-US -en-US mental effects will be, she said. We underen-US -en-US stand that it is zoned Heavy Industrial in the en-US county and that it probably meets the same en-US classification in the city, but we are conen-US-en-US cerned about the environment as it borders en-US Ten Mile Creek. Were also concerned about en-US the stormwater as this is a heavy flooding en-US area. During Hurricane Irma, there was en-US water probably about eight feet high in my en-US yard, so we want to make sure that whatever en-US happens, the environment and stormwater en-US are taken care of.en-US Commissioner Reginald Sessions asked en-US City Engineer Jack Andrews for assurances en-US to alleviate Ms. Barbieris floodwater conen-US-en-US cerns. en-US Im sort of putting you on the spot en-US because theres no specific use, but if were en-US going to adopt something a little more en-US intense than the county, do you have any en-US concerns with regards to the stormwater en-US system and Ten Mile Creek and the impact en-US that it could have relating to flooding? he en-US asked. en-US Without a specific use, it is hard to deteren-US -en-US mine that exactly, Mr. Andrews responded. en-US But there are rules and regulations that you en-US have to follow for the stormwater. We have en-US 39 acres here, and Im sure we can provide en-US enough onsite stormwater to mitigate for en-US this use.en-US Ms. Grohall insisted the citys industrial en-US zoning classification would actually provide en-US more protections for the environment than en-US the current county classification, which the en-US current landowner had requested to mainen-US -en-US tain several years ago in order to continue en-USplant operations at the time without having en-US to go through the citys conditional use peren-US -en-US mit process.en-US The county actually permits a wider en-US variety of industrial activities, she en-US explained. A lot of those industrial activien-US -en-US ties we consider to be conditional uses, en-US whereas the county permits them outright en-US by right. The countys Heavy Industrial zonen-US -en-US ing district, for all practical purposes upon en-US review, is much more permissive than our en-US code is.en-US The Commission subsequently voted 4-0, en-US with Commissioner Rufus Alexander en-US absent, to approve the rezoning request and en-US amendment to the citys zoning atlas. en-USSelvitzen-USFrom page 1en-USPhoto courtesy of Pat Alleyen-USTia Adkins, Ms. December 2015; Cris Adams, Ms. November 2015; Jeannette Weiss, Ms. en-US October 2015; Sandee Allen, Ms. September 2015; Maria Seidel, Ms. August 2015; Jennifer en-US Strawn, Ms. July 2015; Pat Alley, Ms. June 2015; Sydney Liebman, then Director of Fund en-US Development for the HANDS Clinic; Greg Childress, owner of G. That way, en-US the panic about high winds can be narrowed en-US to a small area instead of wide spread panic.en-USBrightlineen-USIt seems fighting against Brightline has en-US had another side effect for the Treasure en-US Coast, not only will we not be getting a train en-US station here to slow it down on its way to en-US Orlando and Disney to connect a metropolen-US -en-US itan area of 6 million with a metro area of 3 en-US million, now we won't be silencing our en-US horns any time soon the way cities to our en-US South are about to. en-US According to the Palm Beach newspaper's en-US May 10th headlines, Brightline's upgrades en-US are about to silence train horns on FCC en-US tracks in six out of seven cities beginning en-US really soon. en-US Anybody living within a mile of the tracks en-US knows the nightly assault on the ears hearen-US -en-US ing those horns blaring in the silence of the en-US night at two, three and four o'clock in the en-US morning. Many must be regretting the decien-US -en-US sion to fight against the trains coming by en-US here and the silencing of the horns that en-US would have brought us. Now as these trains en-US approach, they'll keep mercilessly blaring en-US their horns as hard as they possibly could en-US during the wee hours of the morning just en-US remind us of our stupidity and the transfer en-US of wealth to the lawyers' pockets fighting en-US this losing war. You ain't stopping this train, en-US sorry, ain't going to happen. Its time to vote them en-US out.en-USGet off the curb to curben-USMany dog owners have no idea what curb en-US your dog really means. They seem to think it en-US means they stand at the curb area and let en-US their dogs wonder around in the middle of en-US private property attached to a 16to 26-foot en-US retractable leash.en-US True, some good owners pick up the en-US stinky gooey excrement, but many just conen-US -en-US tinue on to let their dogs urinate on as many en-US mailbox posts as possible leaving us the en-US odor behind in the hot Florida sun. Have en-US some consideration folks.en-USTurn signalsen-USMost drivers in Florida do not know what en-US a turn signal is. They prefer to have other en-US motorists guess what they intend to do.en-US A ticket for an improper turn/lane change en-US costs $131. If law enforcement would en-US enforce those laws not only would they genen-US -en-US erate some much needed revenue, but we en-US would probably see a lot more twinkling of en-US turn signals.en-USFind way to keep guns en-US out of the wrong handsen-USI am quite surprised that Florida has not en-US taken any action regarding guns getting into en-US wrong hands.en-US With two massive shootings in our Sunen-US -en-US shine state, our lawmakers have not taken a en-US stern action to curb gun violence. When we en-US sent our children to school many decades en-US ago, nothing came to our mind whether our en-US children return from school or getting shot en-US by a miserable human being.en-US Yesterday I saw a gun show in my neighen-US -en-US borhood and I saw the display of all kinds of en-US assault weapons. I started wondering what if en-US a weapon gets to a wrong person?en-US After the recent Parkland shooting, our en-US state lawmakers are just keeping quiet by en-US not instituting a law to curb gun violence. en-US Also, another State law of STAND YOUR en-US GROUND LAW is plain silly and stupid.en-US God created us and God is the only peren-US -en-US son have rights to take our life away. I sent en-US letters to Gov. Scott with no response. What en-US if our governor's child gets shot?en-US It's about time that our country should en-US wake up and curb gun violence and let paren-US -en-US ents have peace of mind.en-US A stern law should be initiated at the feden-US-en-US eral level and government should take conen-US-en-US trol of who is a candidate to own guns and en-US keep them from getting into the wrong en-US hands.en-USFriendly reminder en-USPlease drivers, slower traffic should move en-US to the right. en-US Despite the speed limit, if you have someen-US -en-US one on your tail in the left lane, move to the en-US right lane. The University of en-US Incarnate Word placed third.en-US For Bethune-Cookman, it was a three-en-US day showcase of extreme command. After en-US closing out the Championship on No. 18, en-US the womens team sprayed the mens team en-US with a water bottle shower that rivaled any en-US victory celebration.en-US It was so fun to see our student athletes en-US end the season like this, said Bethune en-US Cookman Head Coach Danny Forshey.en-US The Bethune Cookman Men were led by en-US medalist Marcus Sundlof, of Sweden en-US (65-70-71 206), who bested his teammate en-US Christian Hovstadius for the honor by en-US seven strokes.en-US It feels great, said Sundlof, a sophomore en-US who overcame a wrist injury at the en-US beginning of the year. We had a lot of team en-US wins, but I wasnt playing well personally. en-US Its great to finish off the year this way.en-US A history of excellence in the Championen-US -en-US ship was the overall theme for each team en-US division winner.en-US Division II was won by California State en-US University-Dominguez Hills for the third en-US time in the past four years. The Toros en-US recorded a 15-shot victory over Lincoln en-US University. Virginia Unions Sergio en-US Escalante took Division II Medalist honors en-US with a 54-hole Championship total of 220.en-US This tournament is always challenging, en-US said Toros Head Coach Ron Eastman. The two teams started the day en-US four strokes apart, before Houston-Victoria en-US was able to pull away. Governors States en-US Matt Contey was NAIA medalist with a en-US three-day total of 222.en-US It was tough competition, said Housen-US -en-US ton-Victoria Head Coach Christi Cano. en-US We had to grind it out for our victory en-US today.en-US For the second straight year, the Mens en-US Individual title was won by the University en-US of Connecticuts Nabeel Kahn, who en-US overcame a shaky start to the Championen-US -en-US ship for a 2-under par final round 70 en-US (75-70-70 215) to win by 12 strokes over en-US both Palm Beach Atlantics Siyan Liu and en-US West Floridas Joseph Stills.Any win is a en-US good feeling, said Khan. University en-US sophomore Linda Wang (72-73-73 218), en-US who defeated runner-up Rachelle Orme of en-US Savannah State by nine strokes.en-US In a weather-related quirk designed to en-US get ahead of the heavy rains forecasted to en-US arrive from Mother Nature on Mothers en-US Day, the final round actually began on en-US Saturday, as the teams played 27 holes en-US overall, including the first nine holes of the en-US Championships final round. en-US 13 GET READY FOR SUMMER withALL YOU CAN EAT SALAD BARwith your choice ofGrilled Salmon Blackened Dolphin Skewered Shrimp Grilled Chicken Breast$9.9911 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.One coupon per table Hurry! Oer good from 5-18-18 through 5-25-18May not be combined with other oers Normal hurricane season approaching en-USHen-USurricane season is almost here and en-US the prediction is for an average or en-US slightly above average season. Since en-US it is still uncertain whether El Nino will en-US take place this summer, we are leaning en-US towards an average season. en-US It does not matter what the numbers are en-US if your location gets hit by a storm. The en-US time to plan for that potential blow is now, en-US well before a system is heading our way. en-US Not only is it important to prepare your en-US home, but it is equally important to prepare en-US your yard.en-US The first thing you should do as the en-US season begins is to trim all your trees and en-US bushes. One note of caution, never do your en-US trimming when there is a named storm in en-US the Atlantic. The trimmed debris may not en-US be picked up in time and could be potential en-US missiles in the event the storm hits your en-US area. en-US Get rid of any foliage that is dead or en-US might be hanging over your house. If you en-US have any dead or weak trees from last years en-US storms, cut them down so they dont have a en-US chance to do damage this year. en-US Take a tour of your yard and make a list en-US of items that would be dangerous to leave en-US lying around. This list should include patio en-US furniture, loose garden ornaments, small en-US potted plants, yard torches, arbors and even en-US your gas grill. Make a list so you know en-US ahead of time what you will have to move.en-US If you own a swimming pool, you can en-US throw all your patio furniture into the pool en-US to help keep it from traveling across en-US Florida. en-US If you have a shed or gazebo, you might en-US want to add extra tie downs to be sure they en-US will stay put and dont wind up in Kansas.en-US You can start early by limiting what you en-US keep out in your yard during the peak en-US months of August and September. Make en-US your yard as secure as possible, as this will en-US help to reduce potential damage to your en-US home.en-US There are many plants you can put in en-US your yard that are attractive and also seem en-US to hold up fairly well during a hurricane. en-US Hibiscus, Plumbago, Firecracker plant, en-US Ixoria, and even my roses seemed to hold en-US up very well during our past hurricanes. en-US You may also want to consider some native en-US plant varieties such as Palmetto Bush, en-US Passionflower, Azalea Bush, Wax Myrtle, en-US Live Oak and Southern Magnolia. Native en-US plants are used to the high winds that can en-US hit during hurricane season since they have en-US been around our area for so many years. en-US They also add a natural beauty to your yard.en-US If you live near the ocean, planting en-US becomes even more of a challenge because en-US you need to have plants that are resistant to en-US salt spray. Remember that a hurricane can en-US carry the ocean mist far inland with its en-US 70+-mph winds. Plant varieties such as en-US Indian Hawthorne, Saw Palmetto, Confeden-US -en-US erate Jasmine, Society Garlic, Daylily, en-US Pittisporum, Oleander and Mexican en-US Petunia can do very well in areas where salt en-US spray can be a problem. Gardenia plants en-US also can fare well with less than 25 percent en-US damage and full recovery after one growing en-US season.en-US If you plan on installing any new trees en-US this close to the start of the hurricane en-US season, you should plan ahead on their en-US location. Plant the trees where they wont en-US potentially cause a problem for your en-US structure. Be sure to anchor your trees en-US carefully with ties if they are newly planted en-US to help prevent damage in the event of high en-US winds.en-US As you can see, with a few common sense en-US tips and some good planning, you can have en-US both an attractive and safe yard this en-US hurricane season. Remember, the Atlantic en-US hurricane season begins June 1, 2018. en-US For tropical updates visit en-US http://homeen-US-en-US townweather.net. en-US Joe Zelenak has more than en-US 30 years experience in gardening and en-US landscape.
