LUCIE COUNTY With music programs en-US across the country disappearing due to underfunden-US -en-US ing, one St. Lucie County group decided to do en-US something about it. The event is called Groovin & en-US Tastin, and the annual fundraiser which is hosten-US -en-US ed atop the Fort Pierce City Garage assists the en-US BlueBird Educational Foundations Recycling in en-US the Key of E, program. This musical instrument en-US donation program benefits those students who en-US cannot otherwise afford to purchase musical en-US instruments. en-US We get people to donate instruments to us, and en-US we purchase instruments to give to kids to rent or en-US buy, said BBEF President Darryl Bey. What starten-US -en-US ed this was looking back at my life as a kid and geten-US -en-US ting all the help that I got from various people, en-US because Im a musician. I got so much help from en-US people that I thought I should pass it on.en-US The kids are just knocked out and really excited en-US by this.en-US The fundraiser which is in its fifth year is en-US presented by the Sunrise City Beer-Wine-Spirits en-US Fest, and will be on Saturday, Jan. 27 from 1 to 5 en-US p.m. It offers a panoramic view of historic Downen-US -en-US town Fort Pierce and the Indian River Lagoon, and en-US there will be food vendors and live music during en-US the event.en-US During the past five years, the organization has en-US raised more than $20,000 and have impacted the en-US lives and passions of more than 100 local music en-US students, and the program mainly benefits middle en-US and high school music students between the ages of en-US 10 and 17. Some students who have been impacted en-US by the program have even gone on to college music en-US programs.en-US I saw the need in this community, that there en-US were a lot of talented kids who wanted to play but en-USBy Gaylon Parkeren-USgparker@hometownnewsol.comen-USSeeen-US en-US GROOVINen-US page 8 Fireman in training en-USSevin Bullwinkle/staff photographeren-USThe St. Lucie County Fire District held an open house at Fire Station No. 7 in en-US Lakewood Park on Friday, January 19. Mr. en-US Gutierrez recently developed the Galleen-US-en-US ria Of Pierce Harbor shopping and dinen-US-en-US ing court across the street from his en-US planned parking lot and told commisen-US -en-US sioners Jan. 16 that many downtown en-US patrons back his plans to begin charging en-US for parking. The lot was originally en-US developed about 16 years ago along en-US North and South Depot Drive by a bank en-US in conjunction with other downtown en-US businesses to provide free, off-street en-US parking. The new owner has only occaen-US-en-US sionally charged for parking for special en-US events. en-US Were trying to provide services and en-US additional parking to the businesses en-US that were attracting and bringing into en-US this community, and the tenants are en-US seeing this as an added value, Mr. Gutien-US -en-US errez said. We have letters from people en-US that use the parking lot, and people say en-US they prefer to park on this side of the en-US tracks to go to the theatre and to go to en-US the events because sometimes they get en-US caught by the trains and have to wait.en-US Senior Planner Kori Benton en-US explained the developers proposal to en-USPaid en-US parking en-US coming en-US downtownen-USPaid parking lot en-US proposal causes some en-US angst among business, en-US property ownersen-USBy Donald Rodrigueen-USFor Hometown Newsen-USSeeen-US en-US PARKINGen-US page 10

I must tell you, George, Tom, en-US Harry, Joe, etc. For all the years my wife and en-US I took vacations, both here in the States and en-US out of the country, I never expected my wife en-US to cook. I know what youre thinking; en-US another spooner. No, Im a working guy just en-US like you. One who respects his wife. Ladies, en-US think about this: you worked hard, too. Why en-US should hubby play golf and go fishing while en-US your vacation is in the kitchen?en-USDo I smell a scam?en-USI am practicing to be a snowbird when I en-US grow up and, consequently, spend much en-US time in the area. I had an occasion in the en-US past, when meeting four women friends for en-US an afternoon of shopping and lunch in en-US another town of nearly having my auto en-US towed away. Although the lot was nearly en-US empty the driver was just about to hook a en-US tow under the front end of my vehicle. He en-US already had a car on the flatbed. Well, he en-US was confronted with five former New York en-US women all with cell phones. He seemed to en-US be trying to get money out of us to leave the en-US car alone. When one said she was calling the en-US sheriff, he decided to leave. en-US I began to smell a scam. The next time I en-US was in the Treasure Coast Mall, I stopped in en-US the Sheriffs outpost there and asked. They en-US seemed not to know any law or policy about en-US parking in large areas like these. Nor were en-US they culling for autos with out of state plates en-US for the retrieval and towing fees incurred. en-US Well this does not sit well with me. I en-US belong to a bicycle club on Long Island and en-US we usually meet in shopping centers, en-US depending on the rides destination. I believe en-US the theory of the owners if that it looks more en-US prosperous the more cars in the lot. We en-US always park far away from where most cusen-US -en-US tomers want to be as do other groups who en-US meet for their purposes of ride sharing. en-US Good Business!en-US Along Long Islands major thoroughfares en-US there are Park and Ride lots for commuten-US -en-US ers who share driving.en-US Yesterday (a rainy Sunday) I met a friend en-US at the Publix shopping center on U.S. 1, but en-US she was leery since a little sign newly posted en-US was at the entrance regarding tow away. We en-US drove in separate cars to and from the en-US movie.en-US I now more than ever think there is a coten-US-en-US tage industry here which preys on unsusen-US -en-US pecting vacationers, snowbirds, etc. This en-US would be a practice which would certainly en-US have a negative impact on the county sort en-US of like the old but notorious speed traps in en-US Georgia, for example.en-US Can someone direct me to where ride en-US shares might take place without danger of en-US tow? I am looking to become a permanent en-US resident and would like to know where I en-US might safely leave my car in the future. Peren-US -en-US haps a big chain store would realize the en-US good will (and increased business) they en-US would receive by announcing a welcome to en-US car poolers.en-US I also read of all the gas guzzling blamed en-US on drivers. What is a driver to do if not park en-US somewhere and share a ride? Perhaps the en-US county fathers can solve this dilemma.en-USInsurance scamsen-USLet me get this straight you have a bad en-US back or youre a convicted drug user you en-US cant find work or youre an alcoholic, you en-US doctor shop you get an ambulance chaser, en-US better known as an attorney you fill out a en-US whole bunch of paperwork describing why en-US you cant work. You get fully funded governen-US-en-US ment check, then youre out on the town en-US either getting supplied with pain killers or en-US youre at your local pub drinking. Now you en-US can live what you interpret as a nice life en-US style. Wow, what a scam. No wonder comen-US -en-US munities have problems and our country is en-US in the toilet. If you dont find anything en-US wrong with this then my suggestion is please en-US dont vote because you cant even take care en-US of yourself.en-USA rave about the areaen-USI just moved here from up north to escape en-US the cold, harsh winters. Much to my delight en-US are so many lovely residents that are welen-US -en-US coming and friendly. Its so refreshing to live en-US in a beautiful community that thrives. Riden-US -en-US ing my bike around the area I find so many en-US wonderful places to shop, frolic along the en-US beach or find a great book at the library. All en-US the goodness here is much appreciated en-US including the beautiful weather. Thank you!en-USA true southerneren-USOkay, here we go again. Im a true southen-US -en-US erner, born and raised in the south. Im not en-US one of these snow birds who move to the en-US south and live here for a couple of years then en-US claim to be a southerner. I have to laugh en-US when I go to the grocery store and watch en-US these snow birds in the parking lot and of en-US course in the store. In the store you have to en-US watch them because theyre always in a en-US hurry and believe me they will run you over en-US with their shopping cart. Im thinking their en-US house must be on fire and they have to en-UShurry home to put it out. Now for the parken-US -en-US ing lot they see someone backing out of a en-US parking space and if they want the space en-US theyll sit and wait, but if not theyll sit and en-US lay down on that horn, and its a wonder en-US they dont give the poor soul backing out a en-US heart-attack. When these snow birds pack en-US up and come south for our nice warm en-US weather and our beaches you would think en-US they would know in the south we take things en-US slow, laid back and enjoy life. Its not good to en-US be in such a rush. No wonder the doctors en-US office is so full in the winter when they en-US come down. So please dont be so rude and en-US unfriendly respect us southern folks. Life en-US is too short to just hurry through it. Just lay en-US back and enjoy our warm weather and of en-US course, the slow moving Southerners. en-USSoon-to-be sheriff Sevin Bullwinkle/staff photographer en-USThe St. Lucie County Fire District held an open house at Fire Staen-US-en-US tion No. 7 in Lakewood Park on Friday, January 19. Pierce the Commission. en-USThe application lists a user fee of $5 to en-US utilize the parking during peak hours downen-US -en-US town and in the evenings during special en-US events, theatre shows, and a variety of events en-US on the weekends that created additional en-US demand for parking in downtown Fort en-US Pierce, he said. The applicants plan as preen-US -en-US sented is with the use of an attendant to en-US accept that fee and provide oversight and en-US maintenance of the parking lot function. en-US The Fort Pierce Planning Board reviewed en-US Mr. Gutierrez conditional-use request Dec. en-US 12 and voted unanimously to recommend en-US approval with certain conditions.en-US Either an ingress/egress is required or en-US the applicant will need to redevelop his en-US parking lot to the minimum design stanen-US -en-US dards as the parking-isle widths would not en-US be sufficient for 90-degree parking, Mr. en-US Benton said. They [also requested] the en-US applicant integrate an accessible route from en-US the handicapped parking spaces to an adjaen-US -en-US cent pedestrian way and [include] a trash en-US receptacle and process for collection of that en-US trash into the use plan.en-US The developers plan for paid parking on en-US the lot also includes the potential removal of en-US a trash dumpster on the property since the en-US citys Solid Waste Department could lose en-US access to it if the city failed to gain access en-US through another alleyway. en-US The relocation of the dumpster would be en-US contingent upon Solid Wastes ability to utien-US-en-US lize the alleyway if it were to be redeveloped, en-US but in the absence of improvements to the en-US alleyway, the dumpster would need to be en-US relocated, Mr. Benton added. en-US That idea irked both commissioners and en-US the nearby business owners who would then en-US be forced to carry their garbage and refuse en-US much farther.en-US Those property owners have been there en-US for 40 or 50 years and you want them to en-US walk all the way to the railroad track to use a en-US dumpster, exclaimed Commissioner Rufus en-US Alexander, who expressed irritation that the en-US city would have to potentially move a light en-US pole and palm tree as well. I dont know en-US about the rest of the Commission, but I en-US dont want you all to come to me with the en-US nonsense of talking about the city has to en-US move a pole, the trees and the dumpster to en-US make way for another business to be lucraen-US -en-US tive. en-US Christine Coke, one of the owners of the en-US nearby historic Wilson Building, concurred, en-US saying her dozens of tenants would be negaen-US -en-US tively impacted by the changes that she en-US believes could hinder downtown growth. en-US Im not against somebody trying to make en-US a buck, and thats what it boils down to, but I en-US will tell you this, she said, that dumpster en-US has been in that location for over 40 years. en-US And not only is the dumpster there, but the en-US Utilities Authority has a transformer there en-US that they need to access, Public Works has a en-US big drainage thing there, so weve got proben-US -en-US lems with that.en-US The owner of S&S Takeout at 148 Depot en-US Drive, Adam Biegner, said he and his adjaen-US -en-US cent business owners would also be negaen-US -en-US tively affected if Mr. Gutierrez decides to cut en-US them off from utilizing the parking area en-US behind their buildings. en-US I also speak for my landlord Jim Hatfield en-US and the other businesses in the area, Crazy en-US Fish, the cellular repair guy and Sweets en-US [Jewelry], and we all use that back parking en-US area, he said. Located back there is also a en-US grease trap that has to be serviced on a reguen-US -en-US lar basis We dont have a problem with en-US Gus making money and for securing his en-US property in any way, but not having access en-US where we have had it for some time would en-US really cause us quite a problem.en-US Commissioner Jeremiah Johnson believes en-US the issue is just shedding light on the shorten-US -en-US age of dumpster space the city currently en-US faces downtown.en-US This is one element of that dumpster en-US problem, he said. Currently we utilize prien-US -en-US vate property to dump a dumpster. Im not en-US sure thats in the best interests of the City of en-US Fort Pierce. Its good for the businesses that en-US are around there, and its convenient. Howen-US -en-US ever, if you were to compare and contrast en-US Avenue A to Orange Avenue, on Orange en-US Avenue there are three restaurant facilities en-US that walk from Orange Avenue to dump en-US their trash on Depot Drive. Thats just someen-US -en-US thing we have to consider, and its a problem en-US for any development thats happening en-US downtown.en-US Ms. Coke mentioned the idea of a preen-US -en-US scriptive easement, -similar to a sort of en-US squatters rights -which Commissioner en-US Alexander wanted to pursue, but City Attoren-US -en-US ney James Messer nipped that idea in the en-US bud. en-US Thats essentially an easement thats en-US occurred over the course of time through en-US usage, one way or another, he explained. en-US Unfortunately in this case, its a factual en-US determination made by a court of law based en-US on evidence that is produced as to how long en-US it has existed, how long its been used, whats en-US the purpose of it -that sort of thing. Its not en-USa determination that we can make today, en-US and theres nothing in the record in front of en-US you today that would allow you to make that en-US decision.en-US Mayor Linda Hudson said the Commisen-US -en-US sion needed to err on the side of property en-US rights.en-US From where I sit, Im very sympathetic to en-US the businesses and the dumpster location en-US and all of the whole complex issue of the en-US businesses downtown, but at the same time, en-US this property owner owns this property, she en-US said. The inconvenience it causes for the en-US neighbors is the City of Fort Pierces proben-US-en-US lem, but not this property owners problem.en-US Mr. Gutierrez balked at the idea of any en-US kind of easement, saying he needed to keep en-US all his property open for the possibility of en-US one day offering valet parking downtown. en-US I cannot put deed restrictions on the en-US property, and so indirectly thats what youre en-US asking, he said. If we had valet parking to en-US provide for restaurants and theatre events, en-US that would allow stacking of cars because its en-US private parking. And thats legally possible en-US within private property.en-US Commissioner Thomas Perona ultimately en-US made the motion to approve the conditionen-US -en-US al-use permit, saying he concurred with the en-US mayors opinion on private property rights. en-US If this was up in front of the Parking en-US Committee, theyd be cheering it and chamen-US -en-US pioning it as a solution to some of the proben-US -en-US lems we have downtown, he said. Obvien-US -en-US ously this propertys been identified as en-US under the ownership of Mr. Gutierrez and en-US he wants to use it in whatever way he wants en-US to, and its our obligation to allow him to do en-US this. Whats going to happen is its also going en-US to cause an obligation to the city to come up en-US with solutions for the other adjacent properen-US -en-US ty owners.en-US Commissioner Johnson then seconded en-US the motion, which passed unanimously. en-USParkingen-USFrom page 1

en-US 15 en-USIen-USn the power struggle of life whos the en-US boss, you or your mind? When our en-US mind has all the power daily stressors en-US can turn into high anxiety situations that en-US cause sleepless nights and built up stress. en-US Unchecked stress can lead to serious health en-US conditions, including high blood pressure, en-US tension headaches, upset stomach and en-US fatigue. An overactive mind can also have a en-US negative effect on our mental state, making en-US it hard to think clearly and make rational en-US decisions. en-US If youve ever wanted to turn your mind en-US away from distracting thoughts and be en-US more present in the moment, than meditaen-US -en-US tion is for you! Meditation is a mental en-US retreat that you create for yourself. Its the en-US practice of focusing your thoughts, and en-US while many people think its about sitting en-US still with an empty, peaceful mind, this is en-US rarely the case. en-US Here is a simple practice from meditation en-US teacher Anthony Profeta, you can enjoy en-US anywhere: Sit with your attention and en-US awareness on the breath and simply observe en-US the body breathing. Whenever your mind en-US wanders (and it will wander) bring your en-US attention back to the breath. Dont get upset en-US when you find yourself off in thought. en-US Dont get frustrated when your attention or en-US mind wanders. Just gently and without en-US judgment return your attention back to the en-US breath. en-US Anthony was at his first day of medical en-US school in New York City, eighteen years en-US ago, when his professor attributed meditaen-US -en-US tion to his success. Anthony had previously en-US explored meditation as a way to deepen his en-US spiritual connection, but hearing a doctor en-US from New York City credit meditation with en-US helping him succeed in medical school, en-US shifted his perspective and inspired him to en-US learn more. en-US Today, many in the medical profession en-US have turned to mindfulness practices to en-US help patients cope with challenging en-US diagnosis, deal with stress or even prepare en-US for surgery. Studies have shown evidence en-US that daily meditation can even make people en-US feel happier and healthier. en-US Anthony points out that there are en-US numerous ways to meditate and it can take en-US time to find the one that best resonates with en-US your personality. Though years of teaching, en-US he has found Sound Healing Meditations en-US can be one of the easiest ways for beginners en-US to get started. Sound healing is unique in en-US the sense that it allows students to lay down en-US and passively be guided into deep relaxen-US -en-US ation, while listening to him play the crystal en-US bowls. en-US This type of meditation is wonderful for en-US all types of meditators, but especially for en-US beginners. The bowls offer something for en-US your mind to hold onto besides the endless en-US chatter of your inner dialogue. Anthony en-US Profeta en-US Meditation allows us to create a few en-US moments of mental stillness in your daily en-US lives. When we continue to create that en-US space for ourselves, it becomes easier to en-US quiet the mind when getting physically still en-US isnt possible.en-US If you are looking to start mediation at en-US home you can find guided meditation at en-US www.AnthonyProfeta.comen-US en-US If you are looking to join a group class, en-US Sebastian Yoga offers two, pay by donation, en-US meditation classes a week as well as, hosting en-US Anthony for Sound Bath Meditations and en-US workshops. en-US Durgaya Palmieri owns Sebastian Yoga en-US Studio, is a Teacher Trainer for Connected en-US Warriors and can be found cycling around en-US looking for the best cup of coffee.
