The Van Duzer Foundation and Big Apple en-US Pizza was able to give an $11,136 check to DeLacy en-US Bembry on Dec. 15 after her home and automoen-US -en-US biles were destroyed.en-US Were extremely happy with that, because it was en-US such short notice to plan the event, said Scott Van en-US Duzer, owner of Big Apple Pizza & Pasta and presen-US -en-US ident of the Van Duzer Foundation. It was just en-US really nice to do this. It was pretty packed and en-US steady all night and there were 300 or 400 people; en-US this is a great community.en-US Mrs. Bembry also is battling stage four breast en-US cancer, and when the family home burned to the en-US ground the family lost virtually everything. The en-US Bembry family, which includes two teenage chilen-US -en-US dren, were the recipients of the goodwill during an en-US event on Dec. 13 at Big Apple Pizza & Pasta by en-US ordering pizza, wings, subs or drinks.en-US Im one proud girl to be able to say Im from en-US Fort Pierce, Fla., and (Mr. Van Duzer) is a blessen-US -en-US ing, Mrs. Bembry said. Words cannot describe en-US what Scott does, and he does everything from his en-US heart and Im glad that God has placed him in our en-US lives today.en-US In addition, the St. Lucie County Sheriffs Office en-US donated a Ford Taurus to the family to cover their en-US transportation needs after the loss of their two en-US cars. The family received the check and the autoen-US -en-US mobile at a presentation on Dec. 14.en-US We have lost everything, I mean every little en-US thing, and for people to come out and help us in en-USFoundation rallies support en-US for Fort Pierce familyen-USBy Gaylon Parkeren-USgparker@hometownnewsol.comen-USSeeen-US en-US FAMILYen-US page 3en-USST. LUCIE COUNTY-When St. en-US Lucie County officials celebrate the en-US 100th birthday of the Port of Fort Pierce en-US next year, they will do so as the new ownen-US -en-US ers of the port after the County Commisen-US -en-US sion voted unanimously Dec. 12 to invest en-US $25 million in port properties. en-US The county has pondered the deal for en-US the last several months and recently en-US made an offer to the owners of the 12.3-en-US acre King Maritime Terminal -formerly en-US known as Indian River Terminal -as en-US well as agreeing to purchase a 10 percent en-US interest in whats known as the Destin en-US Beach property. The county plans to hire en-US a private company to run the port and en-US use its own status as a government entity en-US to solicit state and federal funds for furen-US -en-US ther port expansion. en-US Port Director Stan Payne showed en-US commissioners a photograph hed taken en-US the night before of a mega yacht berthed en-US at the port to encourage them to approve en-US the purchase.en-US This is an ideal candidate with public en-US ownership of the facility, a private operaen-US-en-US tor providing equipment and infrastrucen-US -en-US ture moving forward, he said. Public en-US ownership -and I think this is one of en-US the most important points -provides en-US opportunities for federal and state funds en-US for infrastructure improvements, someen-US -en-US thing a private facility does not have. You en-US also have the added benefit of being able en-US to leverage the development of the King en-US Terminal into the development of Haren-US -en-US bor Point through a public/private parten-US -en-US nership. We can get en-US back and we can rebuild, but to have everybody to help en-US us get back to where we need to be; it just doesnt get any en-US better than that.en-US This is what its all about: A community helping en-US one-another, and my grandmother used to say all the en-US time that the communities and families taking care of en-US each other is what the world needs to go back to.en-US The event also featured music courtesy of Traxx Enteren-US -en-US tainment, and 100-percent of every slice, wing, pizza, en-US beer, soda, or sub customers purchased along with all en-US staff salaries and tips that evening went toward helping en-US the Bembry family, along with money from raffles.en-US The Bembry family was the 99th so far that has beneen-US -en-US fitted from donations from the Van Duzer Foundation, en-US which offers assistance to people struck by tragedies of en-US all kinds. Mr. Van Duzer added that he was thankful to en-US see that 17 of those previous families were on hand that en-US night to offer a little help to the Bembry family in their en-US time of need.en-US That was pretty special, with this being at Christmas en-US time and them coming out to support another family, en-US Mr. Van Duzer said. A lot of people ask why were sucen-US -en-US cessful, and I believe that there are a lot of good people in en-US our community and they want to do something. en-US By them just coming out and having a pizza, we can en-US donate that $10 or $12 dollars, and it adds up.en-US To learn more about the Van Duzer Foundation or to en-US donate, please visit or en-US call 772-528-3467.en-USFamilyen-USFrom page 1 DeLacy Bembry and en-USGary Grimsleyen-USSeeen-US Calendar, page 8

en-US 4 From our Family to yours, Happy Holidays! risk/high-reward type endeavor. en-USAfter city officials and members of the en-US public in attendance heard presentations by en-US staff members and the countys contracted en-US environmental engineer, County Adminisen-US-en-US trator Howard Tipton then departed from en-US his normal role of neutrality and took a en-US stance favoring the port purchase. en-US Im going to take more of an advocate en-US role this evening because I believe this projen-US -en-US ect is important for this community, he said. en-US The concept of county ownership at the en-US port or a focus on mega yachts at the Port of en-US Fort Pierce are not new thoughts. Its been en-US understood for years that the possibility of en-US bringing additional property into public en-US hands at the port is the single best way to en-US leverage our local tax dollars with state and en-US federal dollars as the other revenue sources en-US mentioned arent in play for private owners. I en-US believe we have this once-in-a-generation en-US opportunity to dramatically change the en-US economy of our community and the Treaen-US -en-US sure Coast.en-US Several members of the public also spoke en-US out in favor of the proposal, including Indien-US -en-US an River State College President Ed Massey. en-US At the college, we have too often seen our en-US young people receive training and move en-US away to communities other than St. Lucie en-US County, he said. Our Board of Trustees en-US have worked for three years now on a roughen-US -en-US ly $20 million complex that will be an en-US advanced manufacturing and skills center. en-US The programs in that building addresses the en-US needs of the port so well be inviting young en-US people and others to look out for those en-US up-to-900 jobs that are going to be available. en-US These are high skill, high paying jobs, jobs en-US that can move people to the middle class in en-US this community and keep them there with a en-US sustainable wage.en-US Don Donaldson, the assistant county en-US administrator of Martin County, encouraged en-US the commissioners in the purchase as their en-US representative at the Florida Inland Navigaen-US-en-US tion District. He said that similar FIND projen-US-en-US ects in Miami had netted great results.en-US I think its an excellent day, and I think en-US the port has a great potential, he said. In en-US downtown Miami there was some wateren-US -en-US front redevelopment that allowed mega-en-US yachts to come in and that was facilitated en-US because it was publicly owned and got access en-US to grants to redevelop that shoreline and en-US make a big difference in their community. I en-US think the same thing can happen here.en-US Commissioner Cathy Townsend admitted en-US she was hesitant to commit to the proposal at en-US first, concerned about past failures at the en-US research park and worrying about being fisen-US -en-US cally responsible. The staff member presenen-US -en-US tations that evening on financing and other en-US issues helped alleviate her fears, especially en-US after Interim Director of the Office of Buden-US -en-US get & Management Jennifer Hill explained en-US that the county already had the funds in its en-US budget to pay for the loan on the property.en-US I thought it was too much risk for the en-US taxpayers, but in conversations in the last en-US hour, I think my questions have been en-US answered. she said. I support this -I think en-US its a dream thats going to become a reality en-US tonight.en-US The Commission voted unanimously to en-US purchase the King Maritime Terminal and a en-US 10 percent interest in the Destin Beach propen-US -en-US erty for $25 million. en-USPorten-USFrom page 1 Meet Slinky! en-USI am a 4 year old Dachshund named Slinky. The liability of having en-US a train traveling through the middle of a en-US small town is one of the many issues that en-US should stop this route from running en-US through this area. The interruption of trafen-US -en-US fic and specifically boat traffic will affect not en-US only our own residents, but visitors to our en-US town and seriously limit fisherman from en-US being able to access the inlet during much of en-US the day, therefore debilitating one of our en-US most important jobs in the area.en-US The obvious solution is to use tracks that en-US could be put on the west side of the Turnen-US -en-US pike. That would be more costly for the en-US developers and should be considered before en-US this discussion goes any further. This train en-US offers NOTHING for Martin County resien-US -en-US dents as it will not stop here; it just runs en-US right through our town causing needless en-US delays. en-US I have always been a supporter of public en-US transportation, however it must be done en-US right regardless of cost. en-US I hope Martin County will continue to en-US oppose this measure until they move the en-US tracks to the West.en-USSymbolsen-USThe discussion about the Veterans en-US Memorial in Vero about the cross is interen-US -en-US esting .en-US If one looks at the Arlington Cemetery In en-US Washington DC they also have at least 1 en-US cross if not more.en-US It is The Argonne Cross on the site.en-US Although the cross is a Christian symbol en-US it is NOT only a Christian symbol. It seems to me that they en-US dont really try too hard. Most of the burden en-US of information gathering lands right back in en-US my lap. en-US You would think with the technology en-US they have at their fingertips, they could find en-US out where hes working or even if hes worken-US -en-US ing. And if he works off the books, as I susen-US-en-US pect is the case here, there should be anothen-US -en-US er way of collecting this money.en-US In my case, both I and my current husen-US -en-US band are lucky enough to be working, but en-US between his two kids and my one there isnt en-US a spare penny to be had. en-US I have a growing son who needs clothing, en-US shoes, school supplies and other expenses. en-US None of those expenses are being shared by en-US his so-called father. en-US If the system that we depend on to help us en-US is ineffectual, then it needs to be fixed. The Solar Energy and Loan en-US Fund is partnering with an international en-US fundraising organization called Kiva, which en-US provides low-interest loans to St. Lucie en-US County residents who require a hand-up to en-US get their work done.en-US One such person is Port St. Lucie resident en-US Lilieth Dixon, who is a wife, mother and en-US grandmother. She and her husband are en-US elderly and managing their budget carefully, en-US but they require roof repairs roof on their en-US home because it is not likely endure another en-US hurricane season. She was unsure if they en-US would be able to make this necessary repair en-US to their home, so Kiva and SELF stepped in en-US to help. en-US Our Kiva partnership focuses on two en-US broad groups: One is for women and the en-US other is for veterans, said Doug Coward, en-US who is the executive director of SELF. en-US Through our crowd-funding program, we en-US can provide our lowest interest rate, and en-US were able to provide unsecured personal en-US loans at 5-percent interest.en-US That includes energy-efficiency, weathen-US-en-US erizing the homes, high-efficiency air conen-US -en-US ditioners and help with wind-hazard mitien-US -en-US gation or storm resilience, hurricane en-US shutters or doors and solar water heaters en-US and PVC (photovoltaic cell) systems.en-US The organizations are helping fund the en-US out-of-pocket funds for this improvement en-US and the money raised thus far was about en-US $4,000 from complete. Through the proen-US -en-US gram, Mrs. Dixon is hoping to obtain an en-US affordable loan through to replace the roof en-US on her home to ensure safety for herself and en-US her husband in preparation for Floridas en-US hurricane seasons, according to the en-US crowd-funding page.en-US Kiva raises money for underserved peoen-US -en-US ple around the world, Mr. Coward said, and en-US have done more than $1B in crowd-funding en-US since the inception of the program. They en-US have been operating in North America for en-US the last three years, and local clients get en-US posted by SELF to the program. The funden-US -en-US ing is actually peer-to-peer lending, and the en-US money is paid back based on the amount en-US contributed to the receiving party.en-US Were able to raise money from the en-US crowd, with multiple people putting en-US between $20 and $50 or maybe $100, and en-US then you cobble that together to secure the en-US funding for the individual project, said Mr. en-US Coward, who is a Kiva lender himself. A en-US typical person with poor credit going to en-US try and get an unsecured loan would en-US probably be lucky to get an interest rate en-US below 20 percent, and most people would en-US probably have to rely upon predatory lenden-US -en-US ers whether its a credit card at 23 percent or en-US worst-case scenario a payday loan that can en-US be 300-percent interest.en-US Thus far, SELF has been able to raise more en-US than $460,000 in crowd-funding and there en-US are four active projects, including Mrs. en-US Dixon and another person who is a disabled en-US US veteran who needs an air conditioner en-US after his familys recently broke down.en-US We pre-screen all of our contractors to en-US make sure that they have proper licensing en-US and insurance and we help make sure that en-US the prices that are coming in are competien-US -en-US tive, Mr. Coward said. We also provide en-US project management, so that we can assist en-US the client by working with the contractor to en-US make sure that it is done on time and passes en-US inspection so the customer is satisfied with en-US the final product. en-USFor more information about the Solar en-US Energy and Loan Fund located at 2400 en-US Rhode Island Ave. in Fort Pierce please en-US visit en-US www.cleanenergyloanprogram.orgen-US or en-US call 772-468-1818. US. Hwy 1 Fort Pierce O en-USne of the questions that I am asked en-US frequently by people who are en-US looking to buy a new computer is en-US whether the machine they are looking at en-US has enough RAM. en-US Usually I ask them what they are en-US planning on using the machine for and how en-US much memory the machine has. Then I en-US usually cant help but to laugh inside when I en-US hear the answer. en-US Its very common today to hear things en-US like well it only has 4 gigabytes of memory en-US and all Im planning on doing with it is en-US e-mail and surfing the Web. Will 4 gigs be en-US enough? Or, I dont use the machine for en-US much, I just mainly use it for -email and en-US Quicken. Quicken is very important to me en-US and I want to make sure my new machine is en-US going to be able to run it OK. Are you sure en-US that just 4 gigabytes is going to be able to do en-US the job? en-US And, the ad says this machine can take en-US up to 16 gigabytes. Maybe I should get 16 en-US just to be safe. What do you think? en-US Its at that point I usually have to stifle a en-US chuckle because to me thats funny. Now, en-US dont get me wrong, Im not trying to be en-US rude, cocky or arrogant, its just that Ive en-US been doing this for a while and I can en-US remember, not too long ago, when just the en-US idea of having just one gigabyte of memory en-US in your home computer was the stuff of en-US science fiction. en-US I can even remember writing a column in en-US 1996 explaining to readers how they should en-US be able to run their machines with just 16 en-US megabytes of memory. (Just to put that in en-US perspective, 1,000 megabytes equals 1 en-US gigabyte). en-US Again, dont get me wrong, Im not saying en-US you can run one of todays machines with en-US only 16 mb; you certainly do need considen-US -en-US erably more than that to run Windows en-US (even the now discontinued XP), but even en-US with a fancy operating system such as en-US Windows 10, the basic tasks havent en-US changed much and 4 gigs of memory will en-US be just fine to check email, surf the Web en-US and run Quicken. en-US Another way to put the whole memory en-US question into perspective is to think of it in en-US terms of money. en-US Back around 1996, when Windows still en-US in its infancy, RAM was very expensive. At en-US the time that I wrote that previous column, en-US saying 16 mb was enough, RAM was going en-US for about $50 per megabyte, meaning that en-US the 16 mb I was advocating cost about $800. en-US So that means a gigabyte (1,000 megabytes) en-US back then would have cost about $50,000! en-US Another factor that I consider is the level en-US of machine that they are replacing. Very en-US often, I will speak to someone who is en-US replacing an old system (maybe an old en-US Windows Vista machine with 2 gigabytes or en-US ram or something) and they wonder if 4 en-US gigabytes en-US will work en-US for them on en-US the new en-US machine. en-US Doesnt it en-US stand to en-US reason that en-US if you were en-US able to surf en-US the Web, en-US check your en-US e-mail and en-US run en-US Quicken on en-US the en-US machine en-US you are en-US replacing, en-US then a new en-US machine, en-US with double en-US the en-US memory, shouldnt have a problem en-US handling those same tasks? en-US Today, the tasks havent changed. Its still en-US email, the Web and yeah, maybe some en-US critical program such as Quicken or en-US something, but whenever I hear people en-US pondering whether 4 gigabytes will do it for en-US them I cant help but hear that little en-US grampa voice in the back of my head en-US saying, back in my day we couldnt afford a en-US gigabyte. We got by with 16 megs and we en-US liked it! en-US Back in 1996, I dont think I could have en-US ever imagined being able to get a gigabyte en-US of RAM, let alone pay less than $100 for it. en-US The whole thing makes me wonder what en-US things will be like a decade or so in the en-US future. en-US In 10 years will we have people wonderen-US -en-US ing if 1 terabyte (1,000 gigabytes) will be en-US enough or if maybe they should spring for en-US two? Regardless, Im sure they will probably en-US still only use their machine for checking en-US e-mail, surfing the Web and running en-US Quicken.en-US Sean McCarthy fixes computers. This en-US past weekend, I played with an old friend en-US from high school, Greg Smiley, and my best en-US buddy Dan Shube. Missing from our group en-US was an old friend, David Gemberling.en-US David lost a short battle to cancer this en-US summer. Like Greg, he was an old friend en-US from high school. Some how, by pure luck en-US or perhaps divine intervention, we wound en-US up playing at Sebastian Municipal Golf en-US Course, a course where David payed many en-US rounds with many of his friends over the en-US years.en-US The day was beautiful. Nearly cloudless, en-US with a temperature in the low 70s. Someone en-US made sure we had a perfect day to play and en-US remember old friends. I say friends in the en-US plural because Dan and I also take a en-US moment when we play to remember our en-US late friend Mike Murphy. en-US Cancer is a terrible thing and I had en-US hoped and prayed that I would never have en-US to deal with it in any form. Like nearly en-US everyone else in this world, it would take en-US someone, or several someones, from my en-US life. My father-in-law, my old friend from en-US high school, and a man who was like a en-US brother to me, all taken early because of en-US cancer. en-US While I do get emotional thinking about en-US it, I do find the happy times we had to be a en-US comfort and try to concentrate on those. en-US Murphy once told me, It isnt the quantity en-US of days, but the quality of those days that en-US matter.en-US Sebastian Municipal is a fun course and en-US Dan, who never met David, soon saw why en-US he liked playing there. Located right next to en-US the airport, you can spend your round en-US watching skydivers take a plane to a height en-US where the plane is a spec and then jump. en-US Many of them laugh and shout as they en-US come back to the airport via parachute. It en-US looks like fun, and their enjoyment of the en-US day echoed ours.en-US The course recently finished a complete en-US renovation of the greens. They closed the en-US course one nine at a time and rebuilt the en-US complexes and put in the latest turf. I en-US played just a few days before at PGA en-US Village, and I have to tell you the greens at en-US Sebastian were every bit as good. en-US I found putts on the new greens roll very en-US well and consistently, but dont break as en-US much as you think. We were constantly en-US burning the top edges or watching putts lip-en-US out. en-US The par-72 course features four sets of en-US tees, ranging in length from 5308 to 6715 en-US yards, allowing every golfer to find a en-US distance that suits his or her ability. The en-US well appointed pro shop, practice facilities en-US and the soon-to-reopen restaurant, are run en-US by a fine staff that youll find ready, willing en-US and able to assist.en-US One thing I like about en-US Sebastian is that you have to en-US think before teeing the ball up en-US and letting it rip. The sixth en-US hole exemplifies this requiring en-US a soft draw around the corner en-US to leave you the shortest en-US approach shot. If you cant hit en-US a draw, youll need to play a en-US shorter, more accurate tee shot en-US or risk running out of fairway en-US down the right side.en-US The short, par-4, eighth en-US requires you to [play well left en-US to avoid water, play very short en-US off the tee, or bomb one at the en-US green. Its a great hole.en-US Shortly after we teed off, en-US Greg pulled out a bottle of en-US Jack Daniels, Davids favorite en-US drink. Playing as a three-some, en-US Greg had the empty seat in his en-US cart. It was saved for David on en-US this day. He placed the bottle en-US in the seat and announced that en-US David was playing with us and en-US having a good round. It was a great touch.en-US The day was filled with some great shots, en-US some poor shots, laughs, moments of en-US emotion, and just good time with friends. en-US We lose too many people close to us well en-US before we are ready to say goodbye.en-US I would like to wish all of you a Merry en-US Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, or just en-US Happy Holidays. Take a moment the next en-US time you have an extra one and remember en-US the friends and family that you have lost. en-US Remember them with warmth in your en-US heart and a smile on your face for it was the en-US quality of the days you shared together, not en-US the quantity, that matters the most.en-US en-US James Stammer has been an avid golfer en-US and golf enthusiast for nearly 40 years.
