I cringe every time I en-US listen to them.en-US I wonder if they even attended high en-US school or even graduated from college to en-US obtain these jobs.en-US Their speech, in my opinion, is a bad en-US example for kids growing up.en-US Examples; just to name a few:en-US American people: This phrase en-US should be Americans.en-US A lot of people: This should be en-US many people. A lot of people should be en-US used in reference to things you cannot en-US count, i.e., rain and dirt.en-US A lot of us: This should be many of en-US us.en-US Me and my son: This should be my en-US son and I.en-US Please, do your best to change this en-US mode of speech.en-US Thank you.en-USPolice outside and trashen-USI just read the paper, and I really enjoy en-US your Rants & Raves page.en-US What really affected me was this young en-US lady who wrote about being there 23 years en-US and how she has never seen a cop go en-US outside and talk to people or be close to en-US the neighbors. And I understand what she en-US means.en-US If the police want people to know who en-US they are and what they are and how they en-US care about you, this would be a good thing en-US that they go out there.en-US And the same thing with the children en-US the children have got to know the en-US policemen, that they care about them and en-US that they are watching them. There are a en-US lot of things that are going on [that are] en-US bad. It would be great.en-US And then she said one thing, too, that en-US hit me. The only thing getting fuller is the en-US trash. They put the trash all over the place; en-US and I take out my dog for a walk, and I am en-US picking up trash.en-US Its a shame that we have a bunch of kids en-US who live like pigs, and they throw their en-US trash all over the beautiful streets that en-US people are trying to have.en-USWal-Mart and poverty wagesen-USI heard someone say Wal-Mart was a en-US pleasure to work for. Well, I dont doubt en-US that; maybe he liked it and that is fine. en-US The awful problem with Wal-Mart is it en-US pays poverty wages to employees who are en-US already living in poverty.en-US The owners of Wal-Mart, the Walton en-US family, are the richest family in America; en-US and they can more than afford to pay their en-US employees a living wage. Many of its full-en-US time employees (with children) are living en-US below the poverty line. This is inexcusable.en-US Wal-Mart employees are the largest en-US group of Medicaid recipients. They are en-US also the single biggest group of food-en-US stamp recipients because they are paid so en-US little, they receive on average $1,000 in en-US public assistance. This amounts to en-US massive taxpayer subsidies for a private en-US company. You and I should not pay for en-US what Wal-Mart can well afford.en-US Again this year, as they did last year, en-US Wal-Mart has had a food drive around en-US the holidays for their employees, en-US expecting customers to contribute.en-US What is wrong with this picture? No en-US one should have to put in a full days work en-US and not be able to feed their family.en-US This has nothing to do with being en-US liberal or being a liberal thinker, as was en-US implied in a prior rant. Henry Ford grew en-US the middle class by paying workers twice en-US the average wage.en-US Wal-Mart shrinks the middle class by en-US paying poverty wages.en-USBoats on the creek/riveren-USI am so disgusted with the boats, small en-US and large, speeding up and down the en-US creek/river with no regard for the Slow en-US Speed Manatee signs. en-US 8 be protected, and the City of Fort Pierce will en-USgain a coveted asset.en-US The city manager also insisted the idea en-US was not his alone, crediting his efforts to en-US previous direction by the Commission itself. en-US Most of us were in attendance at that en-US meeting where it was announced, and then en-US we had a joint meeting where we discussed en-US this opportunity, Mr. Mimms explained. I en-US believe that this group felt this was an en-US opportunity for the city to be equal partners en-US -50/50 partners is what I heard -and gave en-US me the marching orders to look for available en-US funding, specifically expressing a willingen-US -en-US ness to look at funding from the Fort Pierce en-US Utilities Authority.en-US Commissioner Rufus Alexander prodded en-US the city manager with questions about the en-US difference between what he and the FPUA en-US director were saying. en-US Why is it that the City of Fort Pierce and en-US Fort Pierce Utilities cant get on the same en-US page? he asked. Why is there such a disen-US -en-US crepancy Mr. Mimms?en-US The latter said he didnt see the issue the en-US same way.en-US There is not a discrepancy as far as Im en-US concerned sir, Mr. Mimms responded. I en-US definitely want to work with the FPUA en-US they are our partner, they are an entity of en-US the City of Fort Pierce and they should have en-US the same strategic vision as the City of Fort en-US Pierce. If we do not have the same vision, en-US then we have a definite problem, but were en-US moving to close that gap and we will have en-US the same vision moving forward.en-US Commissioner Jeremiah Johnson asked en-US City Attorney James Messer to offer his en-US opinion on the legality of the proposed en-US money transfer.en-US No one can determine whether the charen-US -en-US ter is violated except a judge, Mr. Messer en-US said. As I read the charter, in my opinion en-US theres nothing that specifically prohibits en-US what Mr. Mimms is suggesting. Arguably, en-US there are provisions of the charter that peren-US -en-US mit it. Ill be totally candid with you: I wasnt en-US going to do a detailed analysis until the en-US FPUA objects to the resolution.en-US Mayor Linda Hudson admitted she had en-US previously backed the idea but has now en-US begun to have second thoughts. en-US I am rethinking it, and I am telling you en-US why I am rethinking it, she said. Number en-US one, nobody at the county has voted for us en-US to be a 50/50 partner. This is a discussion en-US between staffs as far as I know; no elected en-US body has talked about this. I also believe en-US that we already are a partner. Our whole en-US port is inside the City of Fort Pierce, and so en-US we are a partner whether they like it or not. I en-US think that the risk is more than whats been en-US expressed.en-US Commissioner Thomas Perona sided en-US with the mayor, saying the city should peren-US -en-US haps look at less expensive and more secure en-US options than a $12.5 million investment en-US right out of the box. en-US Theres not a business plan and theres no en-US marketing strategy that I know of, he said. en-US The county maintains control, and they en-US havent identified any future revenues. If I en-US was told that this was crucial in the developen-US -en-US ment and the future of the port, it would en-US definitely be a different scenario for me.en-US The focus of the conversation then shiften-US-en-US ed to the apparent lack of cooperation en-US between the city and the FPUA.en-US Were lacking communication between en-US staff right now, Commissioner Johnson en-US said. We dont need to be two independent en-US bodies although we have to keep them sepaen-US -en-US rate. It doesnt mean we cant work toward en-US strategic objectives and objectives. It doesnt en-US mean we cant come together and have a en-US vision for our community so that my kids en-US can come back here and know that they en-US have something sustainable to come back en-US to.en-US Commissioner Reginald Sessions backed en-US the idea of the port investment but en-US expressed frustration about the disconnect en-US as well. en-US Based on what my city manager is saying en-US and my director of the Utilities Authority is en-US saying, weve got some issues here, and its en-US not supposed to be that way, he exclaimed. en-US This is not looking good, and Im really not en-US happy with what I saw here tonight with en-US regards to these department heads and how en-US they contradicted each other. We have got to en-US take a position first of all get these parties en-US onboard, if its the port or anything else as en-US far as the futures concerned.en-US Mayor Hudson concurred.en-US It is definitely two different cultures that en-US need to be closer together, and I for one en-US want that to happen, she added. en-US Mr. Mimms believes his proposed $12.5 en-US million resolution would have forced the en-US two parties to the table for more discussion.en-US As of right now, weve had several discusen-US -en-US sions, but nothing has been accomplished, en-US he said. That resolution begins the discusen-US-en-US sion for the FPUA Board and the FPUA en-US staff. We have talked about our wants and en-US our desires, but if we dont have a vehicle to en-US initiate the discussion with the FPUA, that en-US discussion will not happen.en-USMayor Hudson explained that en-US the matter would be discussed at en-US the FPUA meeting the following en-US evening and said she needed direcen-US -en-US tion by commissioners to proceed. en-USThe discussion then died for lack en-US of a motion by commissioners for en-US any further action. en-US I hear silence so I think we en-US should move on, Mayor Hudson en-US said. en-USWere lacking communication between staff right now. We en-US dont need to be two independent bodies although we have to en-US keep them separate. It doesnt mean we cant work toward en-US strategic objectives and objectives. It doesnt mean we cant en-US come together and have a vision for our community so that my en-US kids can come back here and know that they have something en-US sustainable to come back to.en-USCommissioner Jeremiah Johnsonen-USPorten-USFrom page 1

Dec 31, 2017 Should there be different equipment for pros? en-USTen-UShere has been a bit of buzz lately en-US regarding the ball that we play. Tiger en-US Woods has now joined Jack Nicklaus en-US in speaking out that the ball goes too far. en-US Woods even suggested, as have many en-US before, that there should be a Tour ball en-US that doesnt go as far as those played by us en-US mere golf mortals. en-US I am thinking that perhaps the golf ball en-US should not be the only thing that separates en-US the recreational golfers from the Touring en-US Professionals. Maybe the rest of our en-US equipment should help us a bit more as en-US well. Maybe we should be allowed to carry en-US 16 clubs instead of 14 or a driver that hits en-US the ball straight even with a crooked swing. en-US While it would take a while to make the en-US ball travel shorter distances and create clubs en-US that help the beginner or less-skilled golfer, en-US changing the rules requires nothing more en-US than your imagination and the desire to en-US make it happen, even if its just within your en-US own group.en-US How many of us truly follow the rules of en-US golf to begin with? If you are simply playing en-US the game for fun, do you even care what en-US the Lords at the USGA and R&A have en-US proclaimed to be legal and illegal?en-US I would bet that one would be hard-en-US pressed to find any one person playing golf en-US outside a sanctioned competition, with en-US rules officials and the like watching over en-US them, that follows every rule to the letter en-US and intent of the law.en-US We recreational golfers play by our own en-US version of the rules all the time. We may en-US move our drive in the fairway from a divot en-US that was left behind or move our ball off a en-US root so we dont break a club or our wrist. en-US We hardly ever return to the tee to re-hit en-US after finding our ball out-of-bounds. Putts en-US inside the leather are given to speed en-US things up and we take mulligans.en-US With all this in mind, I think its time we en-US consider having a set of rules for recreen-US -en-US ational golfers. There are three things that en-US hurt our beloved game. Its expensive, it en-US takes a long time to play, and most of all, its en-US very, very difficult.en-US If you owned a golf course, would you en-US really care if the golfers are playing by the en-US rules or would it matter more that they are en-US having fun, enjoying the game and filling en-US up the tee sheets?en-US The results of a Google survey, based on en-US nearly 7,000 respondents shows that 61 en-US percent of golfers admit to occasionally en-US bending the rules. An additional 12 percent en-US admit to always bending the rules while en-US only 27 percent claim to have always played en-US by the letter of the rules.en-US Additionally, the same survey showed en-US that an overwhelming majority of golfers en-US consider themselves recreational golfers en-US and have no desire to follow the rules to the en-US letter. Fewer than 15 en-US percent keep an official en-US USGA handicap, and an en-US equal amount have no en-US idea what a handicap is.en-US Of those responding, en-US 78 percent said they play en-US the game for fun, nothing en-US more, nothing less. The en-US remainder play by the en-US rules because they enjoy en-US the challenge it presents, en-US or because they are en-US aspiring to become a en-US professional.en-US According to the en-US National Golf Foundation (NGF), those en-US leaving the game have given three main en-US reasons for their departure; high cost, en-US excessive time needed to play, and inconveen-US -en-US nient rules.en-US The Google survey also showed that en-US those who play the game just for fun are en-US fine with the idea of playing with recreen-US -en-US ational equipment. They dont mind the en-US implementation of balls that want to go en-US straight and clubs that help poor swings. en-US Why should this game only be enjoyed by en-US those talented enough to play it well or with en-US enough time to devote to honing their skills en-US to make it so?en-US Anyone can have their own set of en-US Recreational Rules for Golf. They should en-US be simple and straight-forward. The best en-US part of these rules should be that as long as en-US everyone in the group agrees with what en-US they are at the start of the round, and it en-US doesnt slow down your play at the expense en-US of others or damage the course, it shouldnt en-US matter what they are. The rules being used en-US by a group five holes ahead could not en-US matter less to me. en-US 14 en-USIts time for holiday dessertsen-USWen-UShat a great time of the year for en-US everyone to share special family en-US desserts. Cookies, cakes, en-US chocolates, plumb pudding, pies, tarts; en-US everyone has a family dessert to share. Well, en-US almost everyone. You all know who!en-US Yes, my wife. Its not her fault. Her idea en-US for a holiday dessert is a smore. In all en-US fairness, she learned that from her mother en-US who thinks a homemade dessert is Jell-O en-US with milk poured over it.en-US Thats another area of concern for me, en-US Jell-O molds. They are not a dessert. I dont en-US know what they are. Is it a salad, a vegetaen-US -en-US ble, a gift at Christmas? Here is what I do en-US know for sure, its not a holiday dessert. en-US What is a Christmas dessert? Whatever en-US your family likes for desserts. Around the en-US world, the number one dessert is chocolate. en-US Lets face it, almost all desserts taste better en-US with chocolate. So, for the holidays, create a en-US chocolate memory. en-US First, here are some things you should en-US know about chocolate. Always store en-US chocolate in a dark cool place. Do not en-US refrigerate. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap to en-US avoid moisture. en-US If a recipe calls for unsweetened chocoen-US -en-US late or cocoa powder, follow the recipe. en-US Cocoa powder is the powder left after most en-US of the cocoa butter has been pressed out of en-US chocolate liquid. Dutch process cocoa has en-US been treated with alkali. It is darker, milder en-US and has a deeper flavor then non-Dutch en-US cocoa. en-US If the recipe calls for bittersweet, en-US semisweet or even milk chocolate, pick the en-US one you like to eat. Do a test taste, though. en-US Some sweet chocolates are sweeter than en-US others, especially European chocolate. en-US You can melt chocolate several ways, but en-US using a microwave is probably the easiest. If en-US the chocolate is in blocks, just chop it into en-US smaller pieces. Set the microwave to en-US medium and cook 1 to 1 minutes; gently en-US stir and cook about 30 seconds until en-US smooth. Chocolate and vanilla is the en-US perfect blend of flavors!en-USCHOCOLATE MOUSSEen-USIngredientsen-US 1 quart heavy or whipping cream en-US 14 ounces bittersweet chocolate, melted en-US in the microwave about 20 to 30 secondsen-US Directionsen-US Whip the cream to soft peaks and add en-US about 1/3 of the melted chocolate. Fold genen-US -en-US tly with a rubber spatula. Mix the remainen-US -en-US ing chocolate into the whipped cream. Mix en-US only until combined as you will deflate the en-US cream if you over mix. Place the mousse en-US into decorative serving cups. Top with a en-US vanilla sauce and a cherry.en-USVANILLA SAUCEen-USIngredients en-US 8 ounces whole milken-US 2 teaspoons vanilla extractsen-US 2 large egg yolksen-US 10 ounces granulated sugaren-US Directionsen-US Bring milk and vanilla to a boil, turn en-US down heat. Whisk egg yolks and sugar en-US together. Temper eggs and sugar by adding en-US some of the heated milk and stir together. en-US Add tempered eggs and sugar to heated en-US milk and vanilla. Cook until mixture will en-US coat the back of a spoon. en-US Chill pot in a pan of ice until vanilla is en-US chilled completely. Add to a plastic squeeze en-US bottle and refrigerate until ready to top the en-US chocolate mousse. en-US Add colored sprinkles for a more festive en-US look.en-US Costa Magoulas is dean of the Mori en-US Hosseini College of Hospitality and Culinary en-US Management at Daytona State College. en-US Contact him at (386) 506-3578 or en-US magoulc@en-US daytonastate.edu. Old Town on en-US U.S. 192 just a few minutes to the south in en-US Kissimmee also makes a great spot for en-US strolling amidst the western ambience and en-US taking unique holiday photos. Next door is en-US Fun Spot America, where youll find a en-US carnival midway and several rides, includen-US -en-US ing the 300-foot-tall Skycoaster for the en-US more daring members of your group. en-US For a less crowded, admission-free en-US option, head to Lake Eola in downtown en-US Orlando where youll find free holien-US -en-US day-themed movies and performances in en-US the amphitheatre and the 72foot Eola en-US Wonderland Christmas tree performing en-US nightly light and music show through Jan. en-US 6. en-US Mount Dora en-US Located about an hour north of Orlando, en-US the enchanting lakeside town of Mount en-US Dora takes on a particularly charming air at en-US Christmastime. Here youll find hundreds en-US of shops and restaurants set amid historical en-US buildings all dolled up for the holidays. en-US Here you can join one of the nightly Mount en-US Dora Christmas Tour of Lights that departs en-US from the historic Lakeside Inn. Costumed en-US docents provide historic background to the en-US storied buildings here adorned with more en-US than four million lights. For a view of the en-US lights from the water, book one of the en-US one-hour nighttime cruises on Lake Dora en-US aboard the Rusty Anchor, or for a more en-US exhilarating experience, take a Jones Bros. en-US Sunset Seaplane tour at sunset around the en-US lake. Other options include a Christmas en-US Lights Cart Tour and the Mount Dora Taste en-US of our Town guided food tour. Families en-US traveling with children will want to en-US consider booking passage on the hugely en-US popular Polar Express Train Ride, which en-US departs from the train station in nearby en-US Tavares through Dec. 31. en-US St. Augustineen-US For a truly riveting holiday experience, en-US head to the nations Oldest City for the 24th en-US Annual Nights of Lights celebration. From en-US now until Jan. 31, visitors can enjoy the en-US millions of dazzling lights adorning the en-US historic structures here from every possible en-US vantage point: from the sidewalks, riding en-US on trolleys and open-air trains, aboard en-US water craft in the Matanzas River and even en-US from the air. The tradition of Christmas en-US lighting in St. Augustine traces its roots en-US back hundreds of years to when the Spanish en-US residents would place white candles in their en-US windows in celebration of the Christmas en-US season. en-US Christmasen-US On the way to or from St. Augustine, you en-US might want to stop off at Christmas, Fla. en-US Located east of Orlando on State Road 50, en-US Christmas is a tiny community whose post en-US office sees a regular spike in activity this en-US time of year. Decorations here are year-en-US round: the towns decorated Christmas tree en-US never gets thrown out to the curb, Christen-US -en-US mas pennants constantly hang from the en-US telephone poles, religious grottos depict en-US Biblical scenes and a small Christmas en-US museum is opened by appointment. en-US Weekend Wanderer is written by en-US award-winning travel and feature writer en-US Donald Rodrigue.
