LUCIE COUNTY Mother nature is, indeed, en-US a powerful force. But, even she cannot withstand en-US the power of love, mixed with a little luck.en-US During Hurricane Irma, members of a Port St. en-US Lucie family were hunkered down in their respecen-US -en-US tive homes and they didnt know that a few miles en-US away the memorial bench they had set in place for en-US their father, Tony Borges, was slowly slipping off its en-US mooring and into the sea. The bench was located en-US near the very end of the Fort Pierce Inlet Jetty, and en-US the bolts were snapped in half by vibration and the en-US force of the wind. More disappointing was when en-US they visited the spot a few days later and discovered en-US that it had dropped into the Atlantic Ocean and en-US might never been seen again.en-US But, just before the Thanksgiving holiday on en-US Nov. 15, the family received an amazing surprise en-US when a park ranger with the Fort Pierce Inlet State en-US Recreation Area tracked them down after finding en-US the bench more than four miles north, lodged in en-US the sand, near the Avalon Beach area. en-US Park Ranger Trisha Kelly was patrolling the en-US shoreline when she noticed the bench sticking part-en-US way out of the sand, and she called for help to have en-US it pulled out. She examined it and noticed the en-US plaque with Mr. Borgess name engraved on it, and a en-US painted #1 Dad, on one end. Neighbors did not get the dog en-US and had no say when they did. It's your Dog, en-US including his poop.en-US Personally, I don't confront the offenders en-US myself either because it could escalate and en-US the guns could come out. But I absolutely en-US and definitely call Animal Control and supen-US -en-US ply them with the pictures from my cameras en-US on my house. I also sign the paperwork they en-US have, to press charges against the irresponsien-US -en-US ble Dog Owner who feels he/she does not en-US have to clean up. Specialty: having a bag en-US with them and act like they clean up and en-US don't do. Since it is nicely recorded on my en-US camera, I turn them in.en-US Second mistake from your end: Property en-US line starts at the street towards the house, en-US with the grass-strip and sidewalk. Why? It's en-US called easement because the City decided to en-US take away your property that originated at en-US the tar of the street. You are still the owner en-US of it and actually still responsible for that en-US part even though, the city took it away from en-US you. The city is not cutting the grass en-US between sidewalk and street either. Easeen-US -en-US ment is NOT a free pass to let your dog en-US relieve himself without clean-up responsien-US-en-US bility. Period.en-US Easement is for Utility and City projects en-US (Public) but still part of the house behind it.en-US Conclusion: The "frustrated" writer is en-US NOT Snobby, YOU ARE using your own en-US words that describes very mildly what you en-US really are. I don't think the words I would en-US use for people like you would be printed.en-USSeparate seatsen-USThere is no reason we cant have benches en-US at bus stops. I am handicapped and I cant en-US stand long. It is forcing people to get walkers en-US with the seat when they dont need it. en-US There is an alternative. They could put en-US bars in between so people can sit singly. en-USWhat about insurance?en-USInsurance renewal of your auto or homeen-US-en-US owner policy many times will include en-US changes not only to the premium but also en-US coverage.en-US For seniors in particular, those changes en-US may be inadvertently overlooked until too en-US late after a claim.en-US There ought to be a law requiring compaen-US -en-US nies or independent agents responsible for en-US calling and discussing with the insured so en-US they understand.en-US And another thing, no premium increasen-US-en-US es ever above ten percent.en-USRe: 'Look away'en-USYou are beating a dead horse, and you en-US need a vacation or a hobby or BOTH! Is this en-US a problem with your neighbors, and you en-US don't have the guts to confront your neighen-US -en-US bors, so you write about it the neighboren-US -en-US hood paper for the fourth week in a row? en-US Please stop complaining about dogs urinaten-US-en-US ing in your yard, that is nothing to complain en-US about. en-US In my neighborhood, people pick up their en-US animal's feces (which breaks down after a en-US few days--WEIRD, I know.), but no one en-US picks up trash/litter which does not break en-US down, it sits there and makes the neighboren-US -en-US hood look crappy. I go out and pick up the en-US trash around my neighborhood; I do not en-US write into Rants & Raves about GUTS and en-US RIGHTS!en-USDriving them crazyen-USI recently saw a push for people to slow en-US down their driving and that is fine, but I en-US have a few other complaints about Florida en-US drivers:en-US No. 1. Driving slower than the rest of the en-US trafficen-US No. 2. Knowing someone wants to en-US change lanes and flat out refusing to allow en-US themen-US No. 3. Driving with high beams on at en-US night and not dropping them down for an en-US oncoming caren-US No. 4. Learning the little stick on the left en-US side of your steering wheel is called a turn en-US signal -you are expected to use this unique en-US device when changing lanes, entering or en-US exiting the freeway.en-US No. 5. When you see a road is cutting en-US down by a lane, get over instead of rushing en-US to the very top to push your way in.en-US No. 6. Also, just because you put your en-US signal on to change lanes, you still have to en-US look before changing lanes.en-US Maybe, just maybe, if people started en-US doing a few of these items, there would be en-US less of these stupid accidents that we have en-US right now and the police could put their en-US abilities to more important things than given-US -en-US ing self-entitled drivers tickets for being stuen-US -en-US pid.en-USKeep it upen-USI have a rave and a rant in the same senen-US en-UStence. While I am very excited and pleased en-US with what they are doing in the medians of en-US with palm trees, plants and new sod -it en-US looks wonderful -at the same time, I wonen-US -en-US der how they will be kept up? I waited and then on Nov. 23 I starten-US -en-US ed hearing from them and we went and got en-US the bench, and we would have had to pull it en-US out with a tractor but it was 150 steps away en-US from where I originally found it on its back en-US and we brought it back here on Nov. 29.en-US After calling representatives with Grimes en-US Air Conditioning which Mr. Borges once en-US worked for she was able to find the family, en-US and the bench was soon back in the familys en-US possession.en-US The children Teresa and Stephanie en-US Goings and Angela, Tony Jr. and Alexandrea en-US Borges were thrilled with the developen-US -en-US ments, said the late Mr. Borgess ex-wife, en-US Jayne Borges. The two remained friendly en-US over the years and his children were a regular en-US presence in his life.en-US The bench is resting at Ms. Borgess home, en-US and has been cleaned up but has a small en-US amount of damage to one of the legs because en-US of the events. In the meantime, they are now en-US deciding whether they just want to keep the en-US runaway bench at the home of one of the en-US children and get a new bench to memorialize en-US their dearly departed father.en-US The kids were very excited that the bench en-US was found; it was pretty shocking that it was en-US found so far away and so deep in the sand en-US and that this nice, kind, park ranger went to en-US the trouble to see that they got their dads en-US bench back, Ms. Borges said. We just were en-US excited and shocked and really happy. We en-US were incredulous. Its pretty heavy and it was en-US out at the end of the jetty, so the wind out en-US there was pretty strong and there were severen-US -en-US al benches that were missing.en-US Whatever decision they make, Ms. Borges en-US said they are very happy to have the bench en-US back at home and grateful for the role Ms. en-US Kelly played in returning the bench to their en-US possession. en-US He just passed away in September of en-US 2015, so it hadnt been that long since it was en-US put there in the spring of 2016, Ms. Borges en-US said. Oh, my goodness, it really was amazing en-US the way (Ms. Kelly) would not take no for an en-US answer; she was determined to find us.en-US While it is remarkable that a 200-pound en-US bench would be washed down the beach so en-US far away and not swept to sea or lost to the en-US sands of time and the force of nature, the en-US borderline miracle of its return eclipses even en-US those extraordinary circumstances, Ms. en-US Borges said, especially this close to Christen-US-en-US mas. en-US It is very special to my kids and it was en-US very cool the way everything worked out, en-US she added. They all thought it was amazing, en-US and they were all pretty emotional about it. It en-US was a shock when we went out on the end of en-US the jetty and it was gone because it was repreen-US-en-US sentative of their dad, and they would go out en-US there and sit together on that bench.en-US Theyre thinking about making it their en-US own private memory bench and buying en-US another one to share with the world. en-US Ms. Kelly said the entire park service was en-US happy to be able to reunite the family with en-US their keepsake.en-US I knew it would make an awesome Christen-US-en-US mas for somebody, and those five kids were en-US heartbroken, Ms. Kelly said. It gave me en-US chills and I was so excited that we had it at en-US the park. The kids were excited about it and en-US it almost made me cry. When you access the Web site, all en-US of that stuff is transferred from their en-US computer down to yours, so it can be en-US displayed. Since this transfer is going from en-US the Web site down to your computer, the en-US data is said to be downloading. en-US So basically, every time you access a Web en-US site, you are automatically downloading lots en-US of stuff. The direction the data flows is what en-US makes the difference between downloading en-US and uploading. en-US Data that comes down from the net to en-US your machine is considered downloaded, en-US while data that leaves your computer and en-US goes up to the net is considered uploaded. en-US When you send your mail, the data goes en-US from your computer, up to the mail server; en-US its uploaded. When you get your mail, it en-US comes down from the mail server; its en-US downloaded. en-US Now, when typical stuff is downloaded en-US from a Web site, its usually displayed as it is en-US being downloaded (back in the days of en-US dialup, the pictures would seem to slowly en-US form before your eyes). en-US The confusion about downloading comes en-US from those times when the file you are en-US trying to access is something other than a en-US file that can be displayed as it comes in. In en-US these cases, you have to save the file to disk en-US and then access the file manually. en-US This isnt as complicated as it may first en-US seem. When you encounter a file like that, en-US typically a save as dialogue box opens and en-US the computer wants to know where on your en-US computer you want to save the file. This is en-US logical; the machine needs a place to store it en-US as it comes in. Some browsers will be set up en-US to automatically save things to your en-US Downloads folder while other browsers en-US may have to save things manually. Save it to en-US the desktop or create a folder specifically en-US for it on the hard drive but, regardless of en-US where you save it, you need to note what en-US folder it is being saved in and what the file en-US is named. That way, after the download is en-US complete, you can navigate to that folder en-US and double-click the en-US newly downloaded en-US file. en-US The next thing that en-US tends to cause en-US confusion is what en-US happens when you en-US download something en-US that your machine en-US doesnt know how to en-US open for instance, en-US say you just downen-US -en-US loaded a .pdf file but en-US you have no .pdf en-US reader installed on en-US your computer. Then, en-US when you go to open en-US it, the computer en-US displays a message en-US asking you what en-US program to use! This en-US can be very intimidaten-US -en-US ing if you dont en-US understand the message but you know en-US what? The download worked fine! The file en-US did indeed transfer from the internet down en-US to the computer, the computer just doesnt en-US know what to do with it and is relying on en-US you to tell it what program to use. en-US (Not sure what program to use? Heres a en-US hint take the 3 letter extension at the end en-US of the file name (in this example .pdf) and en-US ask google what program opens .pdf. en-US Google will then come up with a list of what en-US programs will open your file). en-US Another area of confusion comes from en-US things that automatically downloaded en-US things like antivirus or Windows updates en-US are often downloaded in the background so en-US there is usually little (if anything) that you en-US have to do but, since everyone knows how en-US important updates are, people can get stuck en-US trying to figure out how to download things en-US that are already taken care of. The trick en-US there is learning how to verify that autoen-US -en-US matic downloads worked the way they are en-US supposed to have. en-US Well, thats downloading in a nutshell, I en-US hope this helps!en-US Sean McCarthy fixes computers. Snapdragons can be just en-US the ticket to add a splash of color to your en-US yard. en-US Snapdragons are one of natures examples en-US of splashing color and style. These colorful en-US gems come in a wide assortment of colors en-US and varieties and they only available in our en-US area during the winter months. They are en-US indeed a winter treat. The flowers have a en-US soft scent and the plants themselves come en-US in a variety of sizes from dwarf varieties to en-US some that will grow as high as four feet. en-US Since snapdragons produce the most en-US blooms during cool weather, right now is en-US the best time to purchase and plant your en-US colorful flowers.en-US Snapdragons are easy to grow and do well en-US in partial shade or sun during the cooler en-US months of January and February. Place your en-US plants in an area of your yard that drains en-US well and is not completely shaded. Be sure en-US to use a high quality potting mix such as en-US Miracle Gro so your plants can get a good en-US start and also the plants will drain well. en-US Using a good quality potting soil also has en-US the advantage of promoting good drainage en-US while retaining just enough moisture so en-US your plants do not dry out as easily between en-US watering. You should fertilize your plants en-US on a regular basis, at least once every two en-US weeks. Use a good quality water-soluble en-US fertilizer such as Miracle Gro or Peters.en-US Another very popular winter annual is en-US the New Guinea impatiens. These colorful en-US plants can be found growing in many yards en-US all over south Florida this time of year. Like en-US most flowering annuals, mass plantings in en-US groups will produce the most striking en-US effects. New Guinea Impatiens are very en-US versatile as they can be planted in the en-US ground, in containers as well as in hanging en-US baskets. In our area, these plants can grow en-US almost all year however; during the en-US summer special care must be taken in order en-US to keep these plants growing. These plants en-US come in a variety of colors and styles that en-US can work well for any of your garden needs. en-US Although New Guinea Impatiens are en-US fairly hardy, there are several insect and en-US disease problems that you might encounter. en-US Things you might need to watch out for are en-US scale, spider mites or aphids. The plants en-US also need to be in a well-drained area so en-US they do not develop root rot.en-US As with most annuals, the plants will en-US thrive best in a good quality soil that will en-US drain well and yet hold enough moisture to en-US keep the plant healthy between watering en-US cycles. Keep in mind that these plants en-US require more water then some of the other en-US flowering annuals you might have in your en-US garden. If they dry out too much, they will en-US certainly start to droop. Usually after you en-US get some needed moisture to the plant it en-US will bounce back nicely. The New Guinea en-US Impatiens replaces what used to be simply en-US known as Impatiens. These older varieties en-US were very susceptible to disease so growers en-US stopped selling them several years ago. For en-US the summer months, there are some new en-US varieties that hold up quite well and are a en-US bit more forgiving if you forget to water en-US them. en-US Joe Zelenak has more than 30 years en-US experience in gardening and landscape. Type TOURING WITH THE TOWNIES in the subject line. en-US Let's see how many places we can go!en-USTouring with the Townies en-USSen-USince the beginnings of this game, irons en-US have been made at differing lengths. en-US Simple physics showed that the longer en-US the shaft, and the less the loft, the farther en-US the ball struck would travel.en-US Clubs that were to be used to hit the ball en-US longer distances used low loft and long en-US length to accomplish this. The clubs that en-US were used to hit the ball with precision and en-US control, had less length and more loft. Not en-US everyone agrees that this principle is sound.en-US Making every club in your bag the same en-US length is not a new idea. Its been tried in en-US the past, but never really caught on. The en-US more I think about it, the more I wonder en-US why that is.en-US Arlen Bento, Jr. is an award-winning golf en-US coach and a Top-100 USGTF and UGTF en-US recognized instructor. He is the former en-US Head Professional at PGA Country Club in en-US Port St. Lucie, former Director of Golf at en-US Eagle Marsh Golf Club in Jensen Beach, as en-US well as former coach of the Pine School en-US Golf Teams.en-US Between being a golf professional, en-US running a course, being a coach and en-US representing several golf merchandise en-US companies, Bento has spent 20 years in the en-US golf business. He currently owns and en-US operates 25-Degree Golf in Stuart.en-US That brings us to a moment about a year en-US ago. Bento was introduced to an idea that en-US he has actually used when he first started en-US playing golf as a professional, single-length en-US irons.en-US The concept of single-length irons, one en-US ball position, one swing plane made a lot of en-US sense to him. At the time, he played a set of en-US Tommy Armour EQL irons and loved en-US them.en-US I was playing good golf and started to en-US take them to my events and got ridiculed by en-US my contemporaries, Bento stated. They en-US made fun of me and said that my game was en-US no good and that was why I needed single en-US length irons and that it was cheating since en-US no one else had a set made that way.en-US Being young, Bento succumbed to the en-US peer pressure and went back to playing the en-US traditional forged blade irons that everyone en-US accepted. en-US I still cant believe I did that, he said. I en-US dont consider myself a follower, but I did.en-US Fast forward to 2016 and Bryson en-US DeChambeau explodes onto the golf scene, en-US wining the United States Amateur Champien-US -en-US onship with single length-irons in his bag.en-US Bentos idea, however, deals with more en-US than just single-length irons. He was en-US involved in a concept designed to get en-US golfers to stand up in the set up position. en-US The idea is simple. Why bend over more en-US than you have to and put your body into a en-US non-athletic position? en-US The problem he found in trying to get en-US golfers to stand up, was that traditional en-US irons made it impossible because the short en-US irons were simply too short.en-US He found himself asking why the more en-US lofted irons had shafts that were so short as en-US to put strain on the golfers backs just to en-US swing them. en-US I started introducing some of my en-US students, the ones who were losing en-US distance, accuracy and getting sore backs, en-US to irons that were all the same length, en-US Banto said. All I did was make their lofted en-US irons the same length as their 4-iron. It was en-US like lightning in a bottle!en-US His students suddenly found more en-US distance, better ball contact, less pain and en-US better scores. They also picked up distance en-US with their driver, which was still the en-US normal length.en-US He scratched his head for a bit, then en-US started watching videos of their swing. It en-US was then that he made his discovery. Their en-US spine angle was staying the same no matter en-US what club they were hitting. That angle was en-US 25-degrees.en-US He realized he was on to something but en-US needed better equipment to maximize the en-US results. Traditionally, the more loft the head en-US has, the heavier it is, making the clubs feel en-US and play much differently when put on a en-US longer shaft.en-US Enter Cobra Golf. The company has en-US invested over $40 million in single-length en-US iron technology and their poster boy, en-US DeChambeau. The results are a set of iron en-US heads that are all the same weight and en-US specifically designed to all be in the same en-US length shaft.en-US The whole concept makes perfect sense. en-US You dont have to move your ball position en-US for each iron. You dont have to bend over en-US more or less depending on your club en-US selection. One swing plane and one ball en-US position for each club is much easier to en-US learn and duplicate consistently.en-US Many called Karsten Solheim and Ely en-USIts all about the irons GOLF en-USJAMES STAMMER en-USSeeen-US en-US GOLFen-US page 19
en-US 19 en-USTen-UShe first time I was in a yoga class en-US where someone let out a nice loud en-US exhale, I almost laughed. I cant think en-US of another place in the world where we hear en-US each other breathe as much as we do in en-US yoga. It took a little courage but when I en-US finally tried this extreme breathing en-US technique with my classmates, it felt really en-US good. en-US It felt like the inhale was gathering stress en-US and the loud exhale was releasing it. It en-US almost had the same effect as singing in my en-US car but without worrying what the person en-US one car over was thinking of my not-so-en-US stunning vocal skills. en-US In yoga, we call working with the breath en-US in this way pranayama. There are breaths en-US for releasing stress, for cooling the body en-US and even for weight loss. The breath is a en-US powerful tool. en-US If youve ever had a panic attack, the first en-US thing someone will tell you to do is take a en-US deep breath. This is an extreme example of en-US our natural tendency to take shallow en-US breaths when we are experiencing stress, en-US and many of us are experiencing stress for en-US some, if not most of the day. When we en-US continue to take shallow breaths our bodies en-US tend to live in an overactive state, making en-US us tired or anxious. en-US Oftentimes, when people have a shallow en-US breathing pattern they are not getting a lot, en-US if any, movement out of their lower ribs or en-US belly. This is because the diaphragm is not en-US fully expanding, which limits its ability to en-US massage the the stomach, lower organs and en-US even the heart. en-US Try this breath practice before bed, to en-US help calm your nervous system. en-US Lay down on your back and turn off any en-US distractions, including the TV or your cell en-US phone. Place one hand over the center of en-US your chest and one hand below your navel. en-US If it feels like an effort to hold your hands en-US here, place a pillow under each arm for en-US support. Give yourself permission to let go en-US of your day and recharge for what tomoren-US -en-US row holds. In the words of John Kabat-en-US Zinn, We take care of the future best by en-US taking care of the present now. en-US Start by just noticing how you are en-US breathing. Notice if your hands are lifting en-US with the torso and the chest on the inhale, en-US and lowering on the exhale. Notice if you en-US are breathing quickly or slowly. Then begin en-US to slow and deepen the inhale. en-US One way to do this is to inhale and exhale en-US to the count of 4 (count slowly). Think of en-US your breath filling you, like you would fill a en-US glass of water. This means that as the breath en-US enters through the nostrils it fills the lower en-US belly (under your right hand) and then the en-US chest (under your left hand). en-US As you exhale begin to gently draw your en-US navel to your spine, as a way of fully en-US releasing the breath. From here, maintain en-US your long slow inhales and begin to en-US lengthen the exhales. Taking longer exhales, en-US allows our bodies a deeper sense of letting en-US go. Now, as you inhale, begin to silently, to en-US yourself, say Let and as you exhale, say en-US Go. Inhale let exhale go. en-US Continue for 3, 5 or 7 minutes and then en-US relax into a good nights sleep. en-US Durgaya Palmieri ERYT 200, YAECP, en-US owns Sebastian Yoga Studio, is a Teacher en-US Trainer for Connected Warriors and can be en-US found cycling around town looking for the en-US best cup of coffee.
