St. Lucie County is en-US currently looking into the purchase of en-US a 12-acre site, which would subseen-US -en-US quently be turned into a mega-yacht en-US service center. Fort Pierces port locaen-US -en-US tion has a wide swath of area that can en-US be developed and it is one of few en-US deep-water ports along Floridas East en-US Coast, and officials say the area would en-US be a perfect fit for the vessels, which en-US are typically of 150 feet in length or en-US more.en-US Its still not a 100-percent done deal, en-US and we are still doing the due-diligence en-US on the project to make sure there are en-US no environmental concerns, said en-US Erick Gill, who serves as St. Lucie en-US Countys Communications Division en-US Director. We expect that by mid-Deen-US-en-US cember the Board will have a special en-US meeting to deal with this item alone.en-US We had a meeting with the City of en-US Fort Pierce and theyre 100-percent on en-US board with us moving forward with en-US this project and it has the potential to en-US have a huge economic impact throughen-US-en-US out the county.en-US One added benefit to the area is that en-US it is in a direct, unobstructed line en-US toward the Fort Pierce Inlet and proen-US-en-US vides an ingress and egress for the en-US boats. The site has the potential to creen-US -en-US ate hundreds of jobs in the yacht en-US industry alone, and could boost an offen-US-en-US shoot of ancillary businesses associaten-US-en-US ed with them, from parts suppliers to en-US fuel distributors.en-US The King Maritime Group is there, en-US but it needs some upgrades, but we are en-US the lowest-performing deep-water en-US port in Florida and we have nowhere en-USPort en-US redesign en-US could en-US mean big en-US changes en-USBy Gaylon Parkeren-USgparker@hometownnewsol.comen-USSeeen-US en-US PORTen-US page 9

en-US 8 en-UStries, concurred with that assessment. en-US Over the last couple of years, since 20 to en-US 25 pastors have come together every Tuesday en-US morning, weve seen a reduction in crime in en-US Fort Pierce and weve seen improvements in en-US the school system, he said. We care about en-US the neighborhood and the city, and we en-US believe that Church Street is in order because en-US its giving glory to God.en-US Jerome Bryant, pastor of the citys Love en-US Center, said he viewed the street renaming or en-US at least giving it the dual designation as part en-US of the overall effort of many stakeholders to en-US rebuild and redevelop the northwestern secen-US -en-US tion of the city.en-US At the end of the day, theres a comprehenen-US -en-US sive plan to rebuild, and with rebuilding, we en-US have to re-brand and re-market, he said. So en-US when I look at renaming the street, its in haren-US -en-US mony with the rebuilding of the section. en-US There is a historic value in 13th Street and I en-US like the idea of possibly giving the dual name, en-US but at the end of the day, Church Street is en-US appropriate because of what the church has en-US done in terms of its leadership roll. en-US Although the majority of the public speaken-US-en-US ers favored either changing the name to en-US Church Street or providing a dual designaen-US -en-US tion similar to what was done for 25th Street en-US -also known as Martin Luther King Bouleen-US -en-US vard -some did oppose the idea, including en-US Trinity Lutheran Church member Lois en-US Gordy. en-US The main opposition that we as a church en-US and a preschool have is due to the economic en-US impact this would cause us and other busien-US -en-US nesses along the 13th Street corridor, she en-US said. It costs money to make these changes, en-US and the least costly is just putting a new road en-US sign up. We look at the broader impact busien-US -en-US nesses would face, such as stationary, busien-US -en-US ness cards, publications, directories, adveren-US -en-US tising and marketing materials. We have a en-US preschool that serves over a 150 children, in en-US addition to our congregation. Both of these en-US facilities will experience a financial burden to en-US make all the necessary changes that would en-US occur if the roads changed.en-US Commissioner Rufus Alexander made it en-US clear early on in the discussion that he would en-US not support an outright name change to the en-US street. en-US Were talking about dual naming of 13th en-US Street, and thats where my support is at, he en-US said. en-US Commissioner Reginald Sessions said he en-US needed assurances that residents and busien-US -en-US nesses along the street wouldnt face unnecen-US -en-US essary financial burdens due to the name en-US change or dual designation.en-US What are the implications behind indien-US-en-US viduals having to change their addresses and en-US their licenses, given that its going to be a dual en-US name? he asked. Ive heard some valid conen-US -en-US cerns with regard to the burden and responen-US-en-US sibility of those that are going to be impacted en-US the most, and those are the people that are en-US actually living on the street.en-US City Manager Nick Mimms insisted there en-US would be no impact to those residents and en-US businesses. en-US For the record, there will be no change if en-US there is a dual designation, he explained. en-US There will be no change required whatsoeven-US -en-US er of the existing residents, businesses or en-US institutions.en-US Commissioner Alexander then made a en-US motion to approve a resolution giving 13th en-US Street the dual designation of Church Street, en-US which was seconded by Commissioner Sesen-US -en-US sions. Almost immediately, members of the en-US public in the audience began to murmur en-US loudly and ask for more clarification, resulten-US -en-US ing in a reminder by Mayor Linda Hudson en-US that the public comment portion of the meeten-US -en-US ing had already ended. City Clerk Linda Cox en-US then explained that out of the dozens of resien-US-en-US dents along the street mailed requests for en-US feed back, 15 backed the Church Street name, en-US 13 backed the dual designation and 15 en-US opposed any change at all. Afterward, Comen-US -en-US missioner Thomas Perona made it clear that en-US he would not support the resolution. en-US Weve been down this road before -literen-US -en-US ally -but we normally have the support of en-US the community, especially the community en-US thats mostly affected, he said. But this is en-US not so simple: Weve got history, weve got en-US financial impact, weve got emotions flowing en-US both ways. I absolutely do not feel comforten-US -en-US able jumping in here and changing things on en-US the initiatives that Ive heard.en-US His arguments ultimately swayed both en-US Commissioners Alexander and Sessions, en-US who decided to rescind their motion and secen-US -en-US ond of the dual designation resolution. The en-US Commission then directed the city manager en-US to seek more public input on the matter. Mr. en-US Mimms admitted the responses to citys en-US mailing had been divided. en-USIn this particular case, I think we have a en-US third, a third and a third, he said. I think en-US the community is torn with this particular en-US situation. I think the best way to gain input is en-US not to hold a meeting here at City Hall; its to en-US go to the neighborhoods and the communien-US -en-US ties themselves. If were going to educate the en-US community, we need to get out into the comen-US -en-US munity and explain what were doing this for, en-US why were doing it and what type of implicaen-US -en-US tions it has for the community.en-USStreeten-USFrom page 1 en-UStributaries of the St. Lucie River and en-US around the pond taking in the antics of en-US wildlife and seasonal wildflowers. Nearly $42 million in wages are to be en-US paid each year into the St. Lucie County en-US economy. It is likely over time, as the Center en-US gains momentum, there will be expansion en-US opportunities as well as ancillary developen-US en-USment in retailing and hotel support, en-US according to the report.en-US Our port has a lot of benefits going for it en-US and you have a tie-in to the (Treasure en-US Coast International) Airport in that if start en-US doing mega-yachts that people who can en-US afford to own a 300-foot yacht can afford en-US their own planes, too, Mr. Gill added. There are times when change en-US is for the better and times when its for en-US the worse. At Indian Hills Golf Course in en-US Fort Pierce, change is certainly for the en-US better.en-US Just over a decade ago, the City of Fort en-US Pierce purchased the course and made en-US sweeping changes over the next few en-US summers. At that time, the 50-year-old en-US course needed some upgrades. A little nip en-US here and a tuck there may have been good en-US for some, but for the new owner, a complete en-US face-lift was in order.en-US A proper range and practice area was en-US added. A clubhouse, along with a grill and en-US dining area was constructed providing en-US tournaments and functions a place to en-US gather before or after an event. All was well en-US in the kingdom, until recently.en-US Not even a month ago, on Oct. 25, the en-US City decided that a change in the culture at en-US Indian Hills was due. Daniel Visconti, en-US formerly with the exclusive Legacy Golf & en-US Tennis Club in Fort Pierce, was hired on as en-US Director of Golf Operations.en-US It was felt that the course needed fresh en-US ideas and a change in leadership to en-US continue to attract the 45,000 to 50,000 en-US rounds per year that the course sees. Over en-US the past few years the course conditions en-US have been less -than-acceptable and the en-US entire place simply needed a morale boost.en-US We want to change the culture and the en-US tone at Indian Hills, said Visconti. Just en-US because we are a municipal course, en-US shouldnt mean that we cannot be clean, en-US neat and fun.en-US Indian Hills has some advantages that en-US other courses the area do not enjoy. Its en-US location, just east of U.S. Highway 1, makes en-US it convenient to get to. The location also en-US happens to be on an area of rolling sand en-US hills that drain very well. While other en-US courses must close due to rain, at Indian en-US Hills you can literally watch the water soak en-US into the ground. en-US Visconti can already see improvements en-US in the condition of the course.en-US Anyone who has played her in the last en-US few weeks will notice the drastic improveen-US -en-US ments, he said. "Weve removed the dead en-US trees, trimmed others so that we can mow en-US under and around them, fertilized and en-US more.en-US The club has brought in IGM Mainteen-US -en-US nance to maintain the course. This en-US company has been doing the same for en-US Sandridge in Vero Beach for two en-US decades and their work is stellar.en-US Visconti has a good pallete to en-US start with. With rolling hills and en-US lots of mature trees, the course en-US has a lot of character. Its also en-US easy to walk the course, someen-US -en-US thing atypical of todays new en-US courses.en-US Measuring in at 6,545 yards en-US from the very back tees, Indian en-US Hills is not long by any modern measureen-US -en-US ment, but dont be fooled into thinking she en-US can be easily taken. The course has a variety en-US of greens with the shorter holes having en-US smaller greens with more undulation to en-US them.en-US While the condition of the rough and en-US being able to play out of it is something that en-US Visconti is addressing, dont venture too far en-US off the fairway or you could find yourself in en-US a number of terrible places. The par-5s are en-US all reachable in two for the better players. en-US There is even one par-5, the 15th, that is en-US reachable in two for nearly everyone. Only en-US two of the par-4s measure in at over 400 en-US yards from the tips. At Indian Hills its more en-US important to hit fairways and your irons en-US well than to hit the ball a country mile.en-US The course is offering a Golf Savings en-US Card, that gives city residents and Florida en-US residents a 20 percent discount all year en-US long. Its something that quickly pays for en-US itself in-season.en-US If you are looking to stay away from the en-US cooking on Thanksgiving, the annual en-US Turkey Shootout is being held again this en-US year. The four-player scramble starts at 8 en-US a.m. on Thanksgiving. Its only $25 to play, en-US with $2 from every entry, along with any en-US other donations going to the Treasure Coast en-US Food Bank. en-US Were striving to make Indian Hills a en-US welcoming, fun environment, Visconti en-US said. We want to get better every day.en-US To see just how much better Indian Hills en-US is becoming, contact the course at (772) en-US 461-9620 and set up your next round. Dales has become a en-US family friend... a place where people gather en-US to enjoy food, friends and their (should be en-US famous) BBQ sauce.en-US Dales first opened its doors in 1962 and en-US has been in its current location since 1965. en-US Those of us who have been in the area a en-US while have spent many an afternoon eating en-US lunch at the busy restaurant. en-US We are really a big family here, said en-US Cindy Webster, owner and manager. Weve en-US seen generations make this their favorite en-US place to come and sit down and eat. Some en-US come in for a quick lunch, some have a nice en-US dinner, some order out and some have us en-US cater events. It really is about what the cusen-US-en-US tomer wants.en-US The service is always great at Dales, and en-US before you know it, your beverages are on en-US the table and the waitress is ready for your en-US order. During the busy lunch hour, there en-US might be a short wait for a table, but because en-US the service is fast, the wait is never that long. en-US And, for barbecue this tasty, the worth is en-US definitely worth it.en-US Because this wasnt my first visit to Dales, en-US I knew there were certain things I wanted to en-US order. Its rare that I leave Dales without a en-US sweet tea and onion chips. These are both en-US musts with every visit. The onion chips are en-US always served piping hot and crispy. en-US Although they are served with ranch dressen-US -en-US ing, I prefer dipping them in Dales hot baren-US -en-US becue sauce.en-US On this visit, I ventured away from my en-US usual small pork special. The sliced pork is en-US chopped and placed on a fresh bun. It is en-US served with a large portion of fresh French en-US fries. Although my favorite, this time I opted en-US to try the Dales Ribeye. The mouthwatering en-US steak was cooked just the way I asked. The en-US charbroiled outside was perfectly seasoned en-US and gave way to a medium steak full of flaen-US -en-US vorful juices. I didnt add any steak sauce en-US because there just wasnt any need. For my en-US side I chose the baked potato. en-US My guest decided to try the baby-back en-US ribs. They were freshly pulled off the grill, en-US tender and perfectly seasoned. My guest en-US enjoys the mild barbecue sauce on his ribs en-US and said it added the perfect touch to his en-US meal.en-US Dales has great home-style side dishes en-US that are great addition to any meal. The en-US macaroni and cheese is top notch, along en-US with the popular cole slaw and baked beans. en-US I spoke with Ms. Webster about commuen-US -en-US nity and the recent hurricane that hit the en-US area. en-US Fortunately, Dales opened shortly after en-US Hurricane Irma with only minimal damage. en-US Many people checked on the establishment, en-US making sure we did OK during the storm.en-US Much of the staff has been with Webster en-US for 10 years or more. en-US Its a small operation, Webster said. Its en-US strong, its working and I personally dont en-US think that bigger is better. I think if you can en-US get a quality meal for a good price I think en-US thats a winning combination.en-US We have been able to bless many people, en-US families and community efforts and been en-US able to get involved with people, Webster en-US said. en-US We felt like it was a good, solid family en-US operation and we give back to the commuen-US-en-US nity, Webster said. We grow families here en-US and Im seeing peoples great-grandchildren en-US here. We like the restaurant business and we en-US like being a part of the community.en-US Dales is located at 3362 South U.S. 1 in en-US Fort Pierce.
