By leaving early, residents en-US avoid being caught in fire, smoke, or road en-US congestion. Evacuating the wildfire area en-US early also helps firefighters keep roads clear en-US of congestion, and lets them move more en-US freely to do their job.en-US In support of Fire Prevention Week, the en-US Florida Forest Service, Okeechobee District en-US encourages all residents who live near nature en-US to develop a wildfire plan, discuss it with the en-US whole family and practice it. en-US 3 en-USimmediately following Hurricane Maria. en-US The plane left on Oct. 2, carrying food and en-US veterinary supplies in that direction before en-US bringing the animals on the return trip Oct. en-US 5. Many of the dogs and cats already were in en-US shelters, but some of them were found in the en-US days following the storm.en-US Dr. Yvonne Van Ovost, who is the head en-US veterinarian at Holy Family Veterinary en-US Clinic, said pilot Nick Barson is a client of en-US theirs and as soon as she found out about en-US the effort she wanted to be involved. We en-US put this together really fast, and we feel like en-US it could have been us (impacted by the huren-US -en-US ricane) so were here to help them out, she en-US said.en-US About 50 of the animals will be housed at en-US the Big Dog Ranch Rescue in Palm Beach en-US County until they can be placed in adoptive en-US homes.en-US We have a quarantine facility and we will en-US get the animals healthy, and spayed and en-US neutered and into loving homes as quick as en-US we can, said Big Dog Ranch Rescue Presien-US -en-US dent and founder Lauree Simmons, which en-US performs about 60 adoptions per week. We en-US received many rescue pleas from people in en-US Puerto Rico, saying that the animals have no en-US food or water and they have no power so the en-US animals are suffering and all of us teamed en-US together and we brought them here to safety en-US into Florida.en-US Jessica Nicodemo, the vice president of en-US Pet Haven, spent four days without sleep on en-US the effort, Ms. Brown said, and is a tireless en-US worker on behalf of animals. She and I sat en-US down and created a plan, and she got all her en-US local rescue organizations to come and take en-USdogs and cats, and then it kind of branched en-US from there, Ms. Brown said.en-US Robyn Urman, the president of Pet ResQ, en-US Inc. in New Jersey, helped provide the food, en-US carrier and bedding supplies. The rescue en-US group already had volunteers on the ground en-US in Puerto Rico when the plane arrived there en-US on Oct. 2, and the flights were funded en-US entirely by The Onyx & Breezy Foundation. en-US Ive been very fortunate and weve got a en-US great support system; Ive been able to fill en-US 10, 26-foot box trucks, Ms. Urman said, en-US adding that her organization has been paren-US -en-US ticipating in the efforts for years, including en-US Hurricane Katrina back in 2005. We sent en-US four trucks down to Mississippi, Louisiana en-US and Texas (for Hurricane Harvey) and then en-US more went this way for Hurricane Irma and en-US now we are involved in this for Puerto Rico. en-US Everybodys been so great and the donaen-US -en-US tions keep coming in. Everybody came en-US together, and while we never really met en-US everybody is a hero or a rock star in their en-US own thing.en-US The groups plan to be there for several en-US weeks conducting animal rescues on the en-US island. In fact, Pet ResQ Inc. and Guardians en-US of Rescue sent representatives straight back en-US to Puerto Rico the next day, including Niki en-US Dawson.en-US Working disasters is the most rewarding en-US work anybody can do, and its something we en-US are called upon to save the animals and do en-US whatever we can, Ms. Dawson said. en-US For more information about Guardians en-US of Rescue, visit en-USwww.guardiansofrescue.en-US orgen-US, which also has a GoFundMe account en-US set up. "It's a en-US known fact that marijuana is the entry drug en-US to most hard drugs."en-US This is not a fact. It may be known from en-US asserted falsehoods, including those puren-US -en-US ported by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sesen-US -en-US sions, but what most people don't realize is en-US that the government has made research into en-US marijuana practically impossible in this en-US country. As a result, there are very few en-US things that can be asserted as "known fact."en-US What is known is that the greatest incien-US -en-US dence of drug abuse in the United States is en-US with the use of legally available opioid en-US drugs. It is becoming a severe epidemic in en-US many parts of the country.en-US Without research, one cannot know if en-US these people previously used marijuana, nor en-US can it be stated that marijuana was the preen-US -en-US cursor to the addiction that many have with en-US these legal opioids.en-US What has been demonstrated is that there en-US are medical benefits with use of cannabis, en-US and to deny those in need is cruel, particuen-US -en-US larly if that denial is the result of ignorance en-US of the subject.en-US What is needed is sound research and en-US correlative data to clearly outline the issues en-US with marijuana. These are readily available en-US from countries that have not had such en-US shackles on science.en-US What is needed is more science and less en-US superstition.en-USWhat is better for your health?en-USEvery year since 1985. TREASURE COAST Domestic violence en-USis no laughing matter. The SafeSpace organien-US -en-US zation has found a lighthearted way of geten-US -en-US ting people to open up about it, however, en-US with the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event, en-US and two of the dates are around the corner. en-US October is National Domestic Violence en-US Awareness month, and SafeSpace decided to en-US host three separate events this year and will en-US bring the walk to Port St. Lucie at the Tradien-US-en-US tion Square to walk against domestic vioen-US -en-US lence on Saturday, Oct. 14 from 9 to 11 a.m. en-US Following two weeks later will be the walk at en-US Indian River Mall in Vero Beach on Oct. 28. en-US The Martin County event, which was scheden-US -en-US uled to be hosted on Oct. 7 at the Riverwalk en-US stage area of Downtown Stuart was moved, en-US due to inclement weather, to Oct. 14 and en-US combined with the St. Lucie County event.en-US During walk, men are challenged to walk en-US one mile in womens red high-heeled shoes. en-US Most men quickly realize that it's not easy en-US walking in these shoes, but its a way to get en-US the community talking about something en-US thats otherwise difficult to talk about ... en-US domestic violence, according to a press en-US release. The event also features a variety of en-US educational information about domestic en-US violence and if necessary be directed to en-US resources to provide help for whatever vicen-US -en-US tims difficulties are.en-US This is a huge awareness-raiser for the en-US organization, and we literally ask good men en-US to step up against domestic violence in en-US 4-inch red stilettos, said Tracy en-US Levy, the director of developen-US -en-US ment at SafeSpace. We started en-US out in Indian River County with en-US one event and then we brought en-US them to each county. We comen-US -en-US bined them into one centralized en-US walk for a couple of years and en-US we just get hundreds of people en-US out there: men, women and en-US children."en-US Walk a Mile In Her Shoes en-US started in 2000 with just a few en-US men, but it has grown to hunen-US -en-US dreds of community leaders, en-US businessmen, youth groups, en-US fathers and sons who participate en-US annually. en-US We get incredible support en-US from the community, Ms. Levy en-US said. The only issue I had en-US with the Day Runner is every couple of en-US months I would run out of calendar pages en-US and have to go get new ones. en-US With my laptop it was downright en-US embarrassing! You think it takes computers en-US a long time to boot up today? You wouldnt en-US believe how long the wait was 20 years ago. en-US I can clearly remember trying to get into en-US my machine to look someones information en-US up and waiting and waiting and waiting. en-US And dont get me started on the battery life! en-US I learned a valuable lesson in those days en-US and it was to always keep my power cable en-US handy and be aware of the location of the en-US nearest outlet. (I even had a $30 inverter in en-US my car so I could plug in when I needed en-US to). The battery would always look like it en-US had enough power but, if I wasnt near an en-US outlet then Murphys law would kick in and en-US the battery would die right when I was in en-US the middle of some important task. en-US No, the whole using my laptop instead en-US of a Day Runner experiment was a dismal en-US failure. I found myself carrying my Day en-US Runner and lugging my laptop behind me. en-US Fast forward to now and Im very happy en-US to say I love living in the future! You may en-US have noticed these devices called Tablets en-US seem to be popping up all over the place en-US and recently I became the proud owner of en-US one. And with my tablet, those fantasies en-US that I had in the 90s of having all of my en-US data at my fingertips with my laptop have en-US all come true but with the tablet! en-US The first thing that Ive noticed is that en-US when I press the little button on the bottom en-US of my tablet (an iPad) its on. And I mean en-US instantly. There is no five minute wait for en-US the thing to boot up and when it does wake en-US up I have access to everything! I can access en-US email, my address book and all of my notes en-US that I make while Im working and the en-US clever part is that the notes that I read have en-US usually been typed in at my home office on en-US my desktop computer. They just happen to en-US synchronize with my tablet so when Im out en-US in the field, everything that I worked on at en-US my main computer at home is available on en-US my tablet instantly I just turn it on and en-US after a few taps I have the information I en-US need. And when I type something into my en-US tablet, it synchronizes with my desktop en-US computer so I dont have to retype anything en-US when I get home. en-US Even the speech recognition software en-US works much better still not well enough to en-US just speak my column into existence but en-US excellent for quick notes. en-US The best part is when I really need en-US something on my desktop at home, I can en-US connect to my home machine with one of en-US several free remote desktop applications en-US and see my entire desktop on my tablet just en-US as if I was sitting in front of it. en-US It took 20 years but with my tablet I en-US finally have all the capabilities that I en-US thought I would have with my laptop. I love en-US living in the future!en-US Sean McCarthy fixes computers. Oct. 31, 2017 Its time to think of some new events en-USAen-USs you all are likely aware, the 2017 en-US golf season is officially over. All of en-US the majors have been played, players en-US of the year have been decided, the FedEx en-US has a new $10 million man, and the weather en-US is turning chilly. Well, at least chilly almost en-US everywhere but here in our state.en-US Golf is a bit difficult to watch these days. en-US There are no big events. No reason for the en-US guys and gals that made a lot of money over en-US the course of the year to step out and tee it en-US up right now. en-US With that in mind, we need to come up en-US with a few ways to entice the better players en-US to come out, as well as to get fans to tune in. en-US We want entertainment. Give it to us!en-US How about a few different events to en-US whet your appetite?en-US Caddie Challenge: Many of the en-US professional caddies can play a solid game en-US of golf. Most are quite good at giving advice en-US and correcting things they see in their pros en-US swing over the course of a round.en-US In this event they would get the chance to en-US tee it up and show everyone how good they en-US are. Id tune in to see just who was the best en-US golfer out of the caddies on tour. I bet some en-US would surprise you with their game.en-US Win a Hole, Lose a Club: In this match en-US play event, the player losing a hole gets to en-US choose any club from his opponents bag en-US and toss it aside. The more holes you win, en-US the more difficult it may become to keep en-US that lead. en-US Winning the first hole may cost a player en-US his putter or driver. Losing his driver on the en-US first hole could make things interesting for en-US Dustin Johnson. Better yet, would some en-US players be tempted to carry an extra driver en-US or putter? If the match is on a course where en-US you know you dont need your 4-iron, en-US replace it with an extra wedge or another en-US putter. Somehow, I dont think wed see en-US many two-foot putts conceded.en-US One Club Per Hole Tournament. en-US Players have to choose one club to play en-US each hole with. If he or she chooses a driver en-US on the tee, every shot on that hole must be en-US taken with that driver. They can switch to a en-US different club at each tee. This would make en-US the caddies happy as they could simply en-US send the bag to the next tee and not have to en-US carry it around.en-US You want to separate the guys who can en-US create and shape shots from the herd? This en-US will surely do just that. Watching one of the en-US top players hit a flop shot with a six-iron or en-US try to land a four-iron over a bunker from en-US 130-yards out will either show us how good en-US they are or give us a few laughs.en-US If you want to make it even more en-US interesting, at each tee have the player draw en-US a card from a special deck. On the card it en-US will tell the player the only club he may use en-US to play that hole. Imagine pulling the en-US putter card on a par-3 requiring a en-US 175-yard carry over water.en-US We can even get fans involved here and en-US have them vote on which club must be used en-US at each hole and that is the one the players en-US will be required to use. Gallery interaction. en-US Thats what the tours need this time of year.en-US Pro-Am Lottery: In another attempt to en-US get the paying fans involved, everyone en-US attending each day of the tournament will en-US have his or her name thrown into a bin. en-US One hour before each players tee time, the en-US bin is spun and a random name is pulled en-US from the bin. This patron is that players en-US partner for the day.en-US To shake things up and make them en-US interesting, the players will hit each others en-US shot. This means that the pro has to play en-US the ball wherever his partner hits it and the en-US partner gets to play the pros. They continue en-US to do this until the ball is holed. The pro en-US cards the low score of the two for the hole.en-US This should really help with attendance en-US as everyone entering the gate has an equal en-US shot at playing. For the players, depending en-US on the talent of their partner, it could make en-US for a great day or a disastrous one.en-US Its time to make golf fun this time of en-US year. I would love to hear some of your en-US ideas. Lets bring some fun to professional en-US golf this time of year. en-US James Stammer has been an avid golfer en-US and golf enthusiast for nearly 40 years. en-US 15 en-USHen-USi everybody. en-US With cooler temperatures en-US (hen-USopefully) and the fall season just en-US around the corner, many of us want to start en-US introducing color back into our yards. A en-US popular variety that is now widely available en-US at most garden centers is Geraniums. en-US Annual Geraniums are very popular for en-US their wide range of brilliant, colorful flowers en-US plus their foliage is also very attractive. en-US The types and varieties of these colorful en-US plants vary widely from cultivars that grow 6 en-US inches high to some that grow to be several en-US feet tall. Geraniums need a bright location en-US with at least a couple of hours of direct sun en-US in order to thrive. These wonderful plants en-US also need to be planted in well-drained soil en-US otherwise the plants will be prone to fungus en-US infection and disease. en-US After planting your colorful treasures, you en-US will want to water them abundantly the first en-US few days, taking care to be sure they drain en-US between watering. Water regularly thereafter en-US still ensuring the plants drain and the soil to en-US dry out between watering intervals. When en-US you water your plants, try to avoid getting en-US water on the leaves of the plant as this can en-US lead to possible disease problems. Do not en-US plant geraniums where they will receive their en-US water from a sprinkler system. en-US Geraniums are heavy feeders and if not en-US fertilized properly, their leaves may yellow en-US and drop. There are several options you can en-US use for fertilizer such as a slow release en-US fertilizer or a water-soluble fertilizer. The en-US slow release fertilizer will need less intervenen-US -en-US tion on your part as some products such as en-US Osmocote and Dynamite feed for as long as en-US 6 months. Water-soluble fertilizers such as en-US Miracle Gro provide a more immediate fix en-US but will require more frequent feedings en-US about every 2-3 weeks. The water-soluble en-US feeding solutions are quite safe and there is en-US little chance of burning your plants. en-US There are a couple of things you can do to en-US prolong how many flowers your plants will en-US produce. Probably the single most important en-US solution is to pinch the spent flowers off the en-US stems on a regular basis. This will ensure a en-US season beautiful color. Pinching also has the en-US advantage of helping to produce well-en-US branched and full plants. A good rule of en-US thumb when choosing your treasures is to en-US pick plants that not only have abundant en-US flowers but that have lots of tight buds also. en-US Look for dark green foliage with not a lot of en-US yellow leaves or yellowing at the tips of the en-US leaves.en-US Todays garden tip: If you are growing en-US Crotons in a container inside your home, en-US yellowing, dropping leaves can often be a en-US problem. To avoid or reverse this problem, en-US there are several things that can help. en-US First of all, you should try to keep your en-US plants at a fairly constant temperature. en-US These tropical plants also enjoy a humid, en-US moist climate so misting the plant will en-US help raise the humidity levels around the en-US leaves for optimal growth. Water your en-US plants on a regular basis with tepid water en-US and keep the soil evenly moist. Be sure to en-US provide bright light near a window en-US otherwise the plant may shed leaves if the en-US area is too dark. Also be sure to fertilize en-US once a month with a water-soluble en-US fertilizer. With a little care and TLC, your en-US colorful crotons will thrive for many en-US years to come and will add a delicate en-US tropical fare to your dcor. en-US Thats all for this weeks column and I en-US hope you found the content both interesting en-US and informative. I will see you again next en-US week with more great garden tips and en-US information.en-USJoe Zelenak has more than 30 years en-US experience in gardening. Send e-mails to en-US email@example.com.
