Mr. Marler transferred a lifelong en-US love of music into a full-time career and he en-US said he has had a blast at the gigs since the en-US 1980s.en-US I actually started DJing with my best en-US friend in high school back in the mid-80s in en-US Coconut Creek, Mr. Marler said. We used en-US to go with my friends father, who was a en-US musician, and in between his friends father en-US playing in his band we would DJ so there en-US was always some music going.en-US Mr. Marler served in the US Army after en-US high school and after he was honorably disen-US -en-US charged wanted to get back to the music. An en-US Addition to serving, Mr. Marler gives milien-US-en-US tary veterans and first-responders 10 peren-US -en-US cent off to their fee.en-US Everybody has music in their heart, Mr. en-US Marler said, adding that he challenges peoen-US -en-US ple to get up and sing at events, even if they en-US have never performed.en-US The business has changed over the years, en-US and when karaoke first got started it was on en-US 8-track tapes. But through a variety of en-US advancements from LPs to video laseren-US -en-US discs to the modern era of digital music on en-US computer and Mr. Marler has been along en-US for the ride the whole way. These days, with en-US karaoke ever a popular attraction, Mr. Marlen-US -en-US er also encourages people to actually peren-US -en-US form during their songs and tries to get en-US folks to come onstage in groups to offer a en-US better presentation and adds to the fun.en-US You run everything on the computer en-US now, Mr. Marler said. The catalog of songs en-US we have is quite big, and Ive got almost any en-US song a person could want to sing. And I en-US even get the younger crowd that comes out en-US and sings Frank Sinatra, which is really en-US neat.en-US Goodtimes Entertainment performs regen-US-en-US ularly at Orange Bloom in Downtown Fort en-US Pierce and at Buffalo Chophouse in Port St. en-US Lucie, along with all the private settings en-US along the Treasure Coast.en-US One of the things that sets Goodtimes en-US Entertainment apart, Mr. Marler said, is that en-US with all wedding events they request a song en-US list from the party so they can hear whateven-US -en-US er music they like and not base it on the DJs en-US preferences.en-US Its all about the groom and the bride, en-US because its their day, Mr. Marler said. The progress bar was en-US moving slowly to the right, and just as I en-US thought the file transfer was just about over, en-US the progress bar jumped back about a third en-US of the way across.en-US The time remaining figure jumped to a en-US whopping 25,464,387 minutes. Consulting en-US my trusty calculator watch, I figured that en-US 25,464,387 minutes was the equivalent of en-US 17,683 days or 48 years. No, that couldnt be en-US right.en-US As I watched, the number bounced en-US around some, dropping from the incredibly en-US high 25 million mark and dropping to more en-US manageable numbers, such as 45 minutes, en-US 28 and once again 11 minutes and there it en-US stayed for another 45 minutes.en-US I finally got fed up with watching (its like en-US watching paint dry) and shut off the en-US monitor, so I dont know when it actually en-US finished. But when I came back to it in the en-US morning, the file copy was complete. And it en-US didnt take 48 years. But it got me thinking; en-US what is this estimated time remaining en-US business all about, and can that figure ever en-US be trusted?en-US Ive certainly seen that behavior before en-US with other file copy operations, downloads en-US from the internet, CD burning and other en-US similar procedures, and Ive always taken en-US that number with a grain of salt, but that 25 en-US million figure caught my attention. What is en-US going on with this picture?en-US Well, in order to understand why that en-US number fluctuates so wildly, its necessary en-US to keep in mind that, on any given computen-US -en-US er, whats happening at any given moment is en-US not necessarily the way things are going to en-US happen in the next moment. So the en-US estimated part of estimated time en-US remaining is just that an estimate based on en-US the conditions taken at that particular time en-US slice. And what happens, from secen-US -en-US ond-to-second is those conditions are en-US changing. Rapidly.en-US What that means is when the computer en-US starts a file transfer, it grabs hold of a chunk en-US of data and looks to see how much banden-US -en-US width is available. Then it bases its estimate en-US of how long it will take on that. But that en-US estimate does not take into account things en-US such as the overhead activity between the en-US device and the computer and how much of en-US the buffer is still available, etc., you know, en-US lots of other technical things that are en-US happening at the same time as the data en-US transfer.en-US Let me rephrase it like this: As soon as en-US the file transfer starts, all the figures the en-US computer based its estimate on change, en-US because of the dynamic way computers do en-US things.en-US What that boils down to is the estimated en-US time for transfer is rarely accurate, because en-US the conditions are constantly changing and en-US cant be relied on, especially when it en-US predicts that it will take 48 years.en-US One question that is bound to come up en-US is: Is this strictly a Windows issue? and to en-US that I would have to say no. Ive observed en-US the same behavior on my Macs as well as en-US other operating systems.en-US So that, in a nutshell, is an explanation en-US for the never-accurate estimated time en-US remaining issue that Im sure weve all en-US experienced at one time or another.en-US I would personally like to see them do en-US away with the estimated time figure and en-US just stick with a graphical progress meter. en-US That would make a whole lot more sense en-US than the arbitrary numbers we get now, and en-US they are easier to read at a glance.en-US Sean McCarthy fixes computers. While making her house-en-US call visits with Irma threatening this area, en-US Ms. Wood realized a low-income patient en-US with a chronic respiratory condition requiren-US -en-US ing portable oxygen, had no air conditionen-US-en-US ing in her home and would be at risk for en-US complications upon returning from the speen-US -en-US cial needs shelter.en-US NP Wood somehow found a couple of en-US angels, Jackie and Rick Tinsley, a dietitian en-US and a teacher not wealthy people who en-US quietly and quickly purchased and donated en-US a brand new room air conditioner. Ms. en-US Wood installed the unit herself.en-US We know from the tragic story in Hollyen-US -en-US wood Hills that elderly patients with comen-US-en-US promised cardiac or respiratory systems are en-US particularly vulnerable to excessive heat. A en-US low-income, chronically-ill woman now en-US lives more comfortably and healthily in en-US Fort Pierce thanks to the understanding and en-US generosity of PSL residents Jackie and Rick en-US Tinsley and Madetric Wood, ARNP.en-USUnhappy with lack of helpen-USShame on the (in)humane society. Last en-US Spring I went through the process of regisen-US-en-US tering my four dogs with the Humane Socien-US -en-US ety Of The Treasure Coast so that they could en-US be sheltered if a storm threatened.en-US When category five Hurricane Irma en-US approached, I attempted to take my dogs to en-US the shelter prior to evacuating. Even though en-US the Governor had declared a storm emeren-US -en-US gency, my dogs were refused protection en-US because Martin County hadnt declared a en-US hurricane warning. en-US Thus some unfeeling, uncaring supervien-US -en-US sory bureaucrat ignored the Governors decen-US -en-US laration and forced me, a disabled senior, to en-US take my 4 dogs on what turned out to be a en-US 15 hour ride to Pensacola, because the roads en-US were jammed even then. If I had waited Id en-US still be stuck in traffic! en-USIssue with rezoningen-USJust read the Sept. 22 article about the en-US City of PSL zoning board taking on the issue en-US of number of occupants allowed per resien-US-en-US dence. One issue to be seen here is one of en-US enforcement. The City talks about properen-US -en-US ty rights and says the City doesnt go to en-US each home to see if the paints peeling or en-US somethings going on with the roof. Realen-US-en-US ly? Not what Ive seen in PSL. Seems like the en-US property rights they speak of is the right to en-US pay fines to Code Enforcement to keep en-US those folks employed. The trucks were even en-US out and about around town the very day en-US after the storm, looking for issues to ping en-US homeowners with. I long for the good old en-US days when property rights meant just that.en-USEnforcing traffic lawsen-USI agree with you to enforce traffic laws, en-US however, only existing laws. There are simen-US -en-US ply too many. How about enforcing existing en-US speed limit and reckless driving laws espeen-US-en-US cially targeting the dangerous, felonious and en-US life threatening, inconsiderate self absorbed en-US neo-drivers who drive excessively fast, en-US tailgate, weave in and out of lanes and literen-US -en-US ally risk the lives of others on the road.en-US You neo-drivers may recognize this en-US writer. I am the guy who slows down when en-US you tailgate me, to a stop even when you en-US dont get off my bumper. I will smile and not en-US respond to your threatening gestures and en-US verbal threats. MY blood pressure and heart en-US rate does not increase because I am confien-US-en-US dently in the right. You are red faced and en-US agitated. I encourage all responsible drivers en-US to do this when tailgated. It is the only en-US offense of those listed above that one may en-US enforce on his own. The other offenses can en-US only be safely enforced by officers of the law.en-USCruise frustrationen-USIen-US want to share you my terrible experience. en-US On Jan. 2017 we had a good deal on 10 days en-US Caribbean cruise with free gratuity, balcony en-US cabin and $500 on board credit, so we book en-US with $200 deposit. Date will be Nov. 15 to 25, en-US 2017. On Aug. 31 I was charged the full en-US amount including the insurance for both my en-US husband and me which is 62 days before en-US departure dates. Unfortunately hurricane en-US Irma came so I text to cancel it on Sept. 8 on en-US the height of situation. Since I did not get any en-US response, I called them on Sept 13, actually en-US 62 days before departure date. The next day I en-US was given a refund of cruise only without the en-US deposit of $200 and the insurance of $239.84 en-US (the policy was not issued yet) plus they en-US charged $100 for cancellation fee. So we have en-US lost total of over $500 and this agency dont en-USgive us any help at all. So my friend when you en-US plan to book any cruise ask the contract on en-US cancellation and get a good agency. We will have en-USa public-education specialist there, who will en-US have activities and games for the kids.en-US The events also will feature the police en-US departments of the respective cities based on en-US the sites, whether they are in Port St. Lucie en-US or Fort Pierce, and the SafeKids organizaen-US -en-US tion will be in attendance with resources and en-US tons of information.en-US Its an opportunity for people to meet a en-US variety of people from different organizaen-US -en-US tions, who would be there to assist them if en-US they had an incident at their home.en-US Ms. Stokes said the events help solidify a en-US relationship with the SLCFD, even though en-US most people really like the firefighters, anyen-US -en-US way, because the firefighters are there to en-US help them through a really, really bad situaen-US-en-US tion. Personally, I was quite en-US fortunate. Other than some lost days at en-US work, my family was unscathed. I know en-US that not everyone was as fortunate.en-US At Hammock Creek Golf Club in Palm en-US City, the damage was thankfully not en-US structural, but was enough to keep the en-US course closed for a week.en-US We had lots of tree debris all over the en-US course, said Rod Curl, Jr, Hammock en-US Creeks Director of Golf. We closed at en-US noon on Thursday before Irma so that we en-US could ready the course and give our en-US employees time to take care of their own en-US family and property. We were closed until en-US the following Thursday. Could have opened en-US earlier but there was a lot of flooding en-US between the first and second holes. We had en-US to wait for that to be pumped out. Other en-US than that it was just lots of limbs and en-US leaves.en-US In addition to the limbs and leaves that en-US we saw all over our lawns and the golf en-US courses, you have to realize that those en-US things will work their way into the drainage en-US systems. Not only does the course have to en-US clean up what you see on the fairways, but en-US also remove the debris from inside the en-US drains and pipes that help get the water to en-US the proper place.en-US Champion Turf Club at St. James in Port en-US St. Lucie had a very good week. The club en-US was open for member play on the Monday en-US after Irma came through and opened to the en-US public on Tuesday.en-US The keys for us were the three storm en-US canals on the North, South and right down en-US the middle of our Property, said Head en-US Professional Chris Cunnife. The other was en-US our links layout which has few mature en-US trees.en-US We also have a hurricane contingency en-US plan which educates our staff to commit to en-US be prepared and then, as soon as their en-US home and family are safe, return as soon as en-US possible after the storm ends, Cunnife en-US continued. I learned the importance of en-US having a plan when I worked in Miami en-US during (Hurricane) Andrew.en-US The plan worked quite well as many en-US golfers told the club that it was the only en-US club they could find open between en-US Jacksonville and the Keys in the days after en-US the storm.en-US Getting ready for a hurricane at a golf en-US course is a daunting task. Just think of all en-US the potential missiles on a golf course. The en-US big open spaces for the wind to whistle en-US through, knocking over trees and damaging en-US buildings. Courses spend a good amount of en-US time preparing and many have a hurrien-US -en-US cane plan in place so that nothing is en-US overlooked.en-US While it may be wise to plug in all the en-US carts and have them ready to go once the en-US storm is over, in case they en-US are needed for cleanup, I en-US have found its actually a en-US bad idea. Having them en-US plugged in is bad due to en-US the problems with electric en-US power and the potential en-US fire hazards it imposes.en-US I hope that you were all en-US lucky and didnt lose en-US anything. Hopefully your en-US power wasnt out too long en-US and you didnt lose any en-US property. If you did, I feel en-US for you and hope your en-US insurance is there to take en-US care of you. Remember en-US that FEMA is there for all en-US of us. If you experienced a en-US loss, go by their website en-US (en-USwww.fema.goven-US) and see if en-US you qualify for help. Our en-US government is there to lend assistance and en-US you should get any help that you are en-US entitled to.en-US With the damage done to the Keys and to en-US the west coast of our state, we could see a en-US large influx of seasonal residents this fall en-US and winter.en-US On Floridas west coast many of the en-US condominiums and homes rented out to en-US our northern visitors have been damaged or en-US even destroyed. Courses there suffered a lot en-US of damage and may take a while to recover. en-US What this means for us is a busier season as en-US those who normally stay there come to our en-US coast instead. Well see more traffic, more en-US crowded tee sheets and restaurants.en-US I have spoken to a few courses and they en-US also expect a busier-than-usual season. en-US Some are expecting to hire more help and en-US expect the tee sheets to get filled quickly. en-US This is good news for them, but could mean en-US higher fees for everyone as demand en-US outweighs supply.en-US Again, I hope that you all stayed safe and en-US made it through. How did it get started? en-US Whose idea was it? No one knows. en-US Who cares, I dont! But it is a great excuse to en-US eat lots of yummy cookies.en-US Actually, no one seems to know where it en-US came from, but on the first of October, en-US cookie lovers everywhere start making their en-US favorite homemade cookie recipes.en-US I remember trying to get my mother to en-US share her Greek cookie recipe, koulourakia, en-US a butter cookie tied in a twist topped with en-US sesame seeds. These cookies are great with en-US coffee, especially heavy Greek coffee. en-US Getting the recipe from my mother and en-US having her show me how to make them en-US turned out to be the hardest cooking class I en-US ever attended! en-US I asked her what ingredients I need to en-US bring and she said she had everything en-US except all-purpose flour. No problem, I en-US would get that for her. I handed my mother en-US a five-pound bag of Pillsbury all-purpose en-US flour. Quick lesson, all-purpose, bleached en-US and unbleached flour can used interchangeen-US -en-US ably. The main difference is unbleached en-US flour has slightly more nutrients in it than en-US bleached flour. en-US Now self-rising flour is very different. It en-US has the salt and leavening mixed into it. You en-US can always tell the difference by tasting en-US you can taste the salt in self-rising flour and en-US all-purpose will not taste salty. en-US Bread flour, on the other hand, has more en-US protein, making it better for breads, not en-US cookies. The gluten in flour is what makes en-US bread set up and cook into a loaf. en-US All-purpose flour has some gluten. Cake en-US flour is very low in gluten; it is also en-US chemically treated to make it better for en-US cakes. Therefore, you can see, I know my en-US flour. At least I thought I did. en-US My mother looked at the flour and said, en-US that is not Gold Medal. What? It has to en-US be Gold Medal and I need the small bag. en-US But its all-purpose flour, I told her. NO! en-US Go back to the store. en-US At that point I should have gone home, en-US but I wanted that recipe. I came back with en-US two, two-pound bags of Gold Medal allen-US purpose flour. My next mistake was asking en-US her why two-pound bags? Its easier for me en-US to handle, she said. I said, OK, how many en-US cups of flour do you use? cups, she en-US answered. 15 cups? It is only a two-pound en-US bag!en-US That is when she pulled out a small cup en-US marked South Carolina State Fair 1939. I en-US started mumbling to myself, I wish I had en-US brought a scale. She insisted the flour had en-US to be measured exactly with that cup or it en-US would not come out. Then she started en-US adding sugar six cups using that same en-US little cup. en-US Now it was time for the butter. I asked en-US how much butter she added. How many of en-US the magic cups do you measure? In response en-US to questions from both him and Mayor en-US Linda Hudson, Ms. Fogarty admitted the en-US passage of such legislation would abolish en-US the citys CRA program that enables certain en-US areas to benefit from redevelopment paid en-US out of property tax funds.en-US It would become phased out, she en-US explained. Ive not been able to read en-US through the whole bill, but there is a mechaen-US -en-US nism in there that will determine what you en-US do with your current bonds and the money en-US you have in your treasure fund at that time.en-US Ms. Fogarty affirmed the current legislaen-US -en-US tive effort to eliminate CRAs comes on the en-US heels of a Grand Jury report accusing some en-US South Florida communities of misusing en-US CRA funds. That impelled Commissioner en-US Alexander to appeal to City Manager Nick en-US Mimms to keep the city from having to en-US absorb the debt incurred by any short-ciren-US -en-US cuited CRA projects.en-US We have a healthy debt, right, and if the en-US CRA folds, then that debt is going to become en-US the responsibility of the city of Fort Pierce, en-US he exclaimed. If this comes to fruition, that en-US means the whole entire city is going to be en-US responsible for certain areas.en-US Mr. Mimms agreed the city needed to en-US continue its opposition to the legislation.en-US Our goal right now is to establish these en-US legislative priorities and to meet with our en-US legislative delegation later this month to get en-US that support so hopefully we can continue en-US with the current structure of our CRA, he en-US said. We have funds that have already been en-US bonded, and we need that tax increment en-US financing revenue to pay back the debt seren-US -en-US vice.en-US Mayor Hudson cited a previous failed en-US attempt at such legislation in order to allay en-US Commissioner Alexanders fears.en-US The Treasure Coast Regional League of en-US Cities is making a priority to fight this also, en-US she said. We fought it last time, and it did en-US not pass, but they promised to bring it back en-US with renewed vigor so we have to keep it en-US up.en-US Ms. Fogarty said the city shouldnt hinge en-US its efforts on the legislatures previous failure en-US to reach a consensus on the issue.en-US The Senate had their idea and the House en-US had their idea, and they were not willing to en-US budge on compromising on that legislation, en-US she added. We might have the same issue en-US this year as well, but I dont want to take that en-US to the bank.en-US Ms. Fogarty said the city needs to fight en-US other attempts to erode home rule as well. en-US Fort Pierce currently has a dearth of funden-US -en-US ing options for transportation projects and en-US needs to defend its right to collect impact en-US fees from new developments for such work.en-US Impact fees are concurrency mechaen-US-en-US nisms used by local governments to ensure en-US that new development pays for the infraen-US -en-US structure needs they generate, she emphaen-US -en-US sized. There was a piece of legislation last en-US year, which would have preempted your en-US ability to set impact fees on businesses comen-US -en-US ing into your area. Currently the city of Fort en-US Pierce opposes legislation that would preen-US -en-US empt your authority of setting these impact en-US fees.en-US The legislative affairs director reminded en-US commissioners to continue pressuring Talen-US-en-US lahassee to increase funding for affordable en-US housing and initiate funding for mental en-US health and substance abuse services, the laten-US-en-US ter which to-date have been unfunded manen-US -en-US dates handed down by the state. en-US We do have a serious issue here with this en-US -there is no funding for these services, no en-US funding for our program, she added. So en-US this is to push Florida to come to the level of en-US the rest of the nation because currently we en-US are 49th in the nation when it comes to en-US mental health and substance abuse funden-US -en-US ing.en-US Ms. Fogarty also asked the Commission en-US to approve the lobbying of two new initiaen-US -en-US tives at the state level: The first, a request to en-US reduce the minimum size of a county en-US restaurant applying for a liquor license from en-US 4,000 to 2,500 square feet and from 200 to en-US 150 patrons; and the second to allow for the en-US placement of slot machines at pari-mutuel en-US facilities in counties whove approved them en-US by voter referendum, which would include en-US the Fort Pierce Jai Alai fronton. en-USLagoonen-USFrom page 1 en-USTREASURE COAST Bealls Stores en-US recently announced a month-long, stateen-US -en-US wide partnership with the American Cancer en-US Society during the Making Strides Against en-US Breast Cancer campaign that runs throughen-US-en-US out Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Oct. en-US 1 Oct.31, 2017. en-US During the month of October, Bealls will en-US participate in the Making Strides Against en-US Breast Cancer campaign. en-US 15 en-USTen-UShe past couple of weeks have been a en-US trying time for all of us as we finally en-US start to get back to normal here along en-US the coast. Hurricane Irma might have en-US caused lots of inconveniences but she did en-US not dampen our spirits. Left behind was a en-US lot of damaged vegetation and plants. The en-US good news is that most of that damage will en-US resolve itself over time but there are things en-US you can do to help it along.en-US Certain big leafed plants like Bird Of en-US Paradise, banana and Travelers palms will en-US likely have shredded leaves. Some of the en-US leaves may have become brown from the en-US high winds. These plants will come back en-US strong but they do need to be trimmed. By en-US trimming off the bad and broken branches, en-US you will help the plant heal faster so the en-US energy only goes into the new and existing en-US leaves. en-US Hardy trees such as oak may drop some en-US leaves, but they will come back nicely over en-US time. You should trim these trees as well to en-US remove any broken or dead branches. This en-US will be a good time to do that trimming you en-US have been putting off. en-US In addition to broken branches and en-US shredded leaves, you may have experienced en-US bushes that were partially knocked over or en-US are leaning. These plants will need to be en-US staked in order for them to regain their en-US former posture. You can use almost en-US anything you have handy for staking, but is en-US important to use a soft material such as en-US cloth or plastic plant tie tape that is en-US available at almost all garden centers. Be en-US extremely gentle when staking your plants en-US so you do not do any more damage to the en-US plant. If the roots have been pulled out of en-US the ground, you must carefully remove the en-US soil from under the area where the roots are en-US exposed then gently tilt the plant back to its en-US original posture before staking. In most en-US cases, the plant will recover even if the root en-US ball is disturbed. en-US Besides plants, there is going to be lots of en-US debris all over the yard that will need to be en-US cleaned up. Save yourself a lot of time by en-US using a high powered blower. I used mine en-US after the storm and it saved so much time. en-US The amount of actual raking that I had to en-US do was minimal. en-US If you have large trees that are either en-US down or leaning, you may want to keep that en-US task to a tree professional. However, if you en-US are good with a chainsaw, you can slice en-US those downed branches yourself. Be sure to en-US follow all safety precautions such as using en-US safety goggles and chaps to protect your en-US legs from a runaway chainsaw. If you are en-US working on branches overhead, use a en-US hardhat as well. Remember that many en-US injuries from a hurricane often occur well en-US after the storm while doing the cleanup. en-US Another big issue you are going to en-US encounter are mosquitoes and lot of them. en-US While the strong winds likely blew a lot out en-US of the area, the heavy rains left lots of standen-US -en-US ing water for new ones to breed in. In order en-US to limit the mosquito population, be sure to en-US remove as much standing water as possible. en-US Although some of your vegetation might en-US look a bit rough I can assure you that most en-US of it will return to its former state over time. en-US You will need lots of TLC and patience. en-US Joe Zelenak has more than 30 years en-US experience in gardening and landscape.
