en-US 3 en-USTREASURE COAST A new Florida en-US nonprofit organization has popped up that en-US works to spay and neuter animals for en-US low-income families in the quad-county en-US area. Operation S.O.S. standing for Sterilen-US -en-US ization Outreach Services is operated by en-US Dr. Julie Kittams and her staff. Formed in en-US late 2016 and fully functional in the spring en-US of 2017, the organization has performed en-US over 650 spay or neuter surgeries for dogs en-US and cats in just a handful of months.en-US Based in the Treasure Coast, Operation en-US S.O.S. sponsors a team of a Florida-licensed en-US veterinarian and two veterinary technien-US -en-US ciansthat travels in a 35-foot mobile surgien-US -en-US cal clinic to predesignated locations in Maren-US -en-US tin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee en-US counties. The group offers its spay/neuter en-US services to income-qualified residents in an en-US effort to help them keep their pets from en-US breeding.en-US In order to receive the services, pet ownen-US -en-US ers must meet qualifications that cover a en-US broad spectrum : Medicare or Medicaid, en-US Social Security, disability, veteran status, en-US taxes showing Income below national poven-US -en-US erty level, WIC, school lunch, food stamps, en-US Student ID, food stamps, House of Hope en-US client. Pet owners must show proof of meeten-US -en-US ing these qualifications.en-US The cost for surgery is $100 for dogs and en-US $50 for cats, and these services can range up en-US to $300 or more for other veterinarians. The en-US price also includes a rabies vaccination/ceren-US tificate and 24-hour PetWatch microchip. en-USPet qualifications include that the animal is en-US between 2 to 80 pounds in weight, be en-US between 8 weeks and 10 years of age, males en-US must have both testicles descended and en-US dogs must be presented on leash. Cats can en-US be in a carrier or a pillow caseen-US Dr. Kittams has worked in the many fauen-US -en-US cets of veterinarian care including private en-US practice, emergency care, shelter medicine en-US and community outreach. She has also en-US worked in low income areas of Alaska and en-US New Mexico, and in 2003 spent two months en-US in Thailand to help sterilize stray dogs with en-US a team of vets from around the globe. en-US I think thats where in her heart she en-US got the desire to work against overpopulaen-US -en-US tion and start Operation S.O.S. said Board en-US of Directors Vice President Scott Coccoli. en-US During her 20 years in the profession she en-US has helped pet owners with varying en-US incomes, but really seems to gravitate to en-US people who are in need. So, the organization en-US targets the low-income residents to give en-US them a hand.en-US In addition, her knowledge in animal care en-US and welfare of what works and what is not en-US effective practices comes from her time in en-US Portland, Oregon just prior to moving to the en-US Treasure Coast. Portland animal care orgaen-US-en-US nizations have been able to join forces and en-US work together, use technology to track data en-US and areas in need of services and officials en-US have passed ordinances that help animals en-US and communities. Operation S.O.S. has en-US already started work here on the Treasure en-US Coast to mirror Portlands model, for examen-US -en-US ple being one of the three contracted veterien-US -en-US narian service providers for the City of Fort en-US Pierces new Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate and en-US Release feral/community cat ordinance.en-US Operation S.O.S. makes the spay/neuter en-US process easy for pet owners needing seren-US -en-US vices. Owners go onto the website, select a en-US date and location from the event schedule en-US then make an on-line appointment. On the en-US day of their appointment, owners arrive at en-US the location by 8:30 a.m. to register and en-US check-in their animal, then return later in en-USthe day to take their pet home. en-US 9 en-USTen-UShe problem with the internet ads just en-US seems to be getting worse. I just en-US finished up on a call with a lady who en-US needed to download a program for work en-US but instead ended up with some adware en-US that completely took over her whole system. en-US Her home page had changed, there were en-US other browser windows opening with en-US webpages she had never even visited and at en-US least 2 different programs opening that said en-US she had driver and performance problems.en-US I was connected to her machine for over en-US an hour cleaning and removing all the en-US adware that had installed. There were 17 en-US different programs and browser helpers en-US that had hijacked her attempt to download en-US a simple program for work and there wasnt en-US a lot that my caller could have done en-US differently she didnt have a chance. en-US I wrote in an earlier column how en-US important it is to learn to recognize and en-US ignore internet ads but I will admit, en-US sometimes it can be hard to tell the en-US difference between an ad and the link (or en-US button) youre supposed to click next. What en-US happened to my caller is all too common en-US shes an intelligent computer user who en-US thinks through what shes doing and was en-US following a set of steps that were to the en-US point and accurate. So what happened? en-US How did her machine get so worked over if en-US she was being careful and watching her en-US step? en-US When I was cleaning her machine I had a en-US chance to look at and go over the steps she en-US was following. Pretty standard steps really en-US there was an address to go to first to en-US register and then download the program. en-US The download link on the website linked to en-US en-USdownload.comen-US , a popular software en-US repository that many publishers use to en-US distribute their software. And here is where en-US things get tricky. en-US The link did indeed bring us to the en-US correct download page but not without en-US confusion. There was a banner ad along the en-US top with the same background and colors as en-US the legitimate portion of the page with a big en-US green Start Download button and another en-US similar button off to the side. I moved my en-US eyes down an inch or so and saw the en-US legitimate Download Now button (also in en-US green) but I could clearly see that by that en-US time it was too late. How is the casual user en-US supposed to be able to tell which of the 3 en-US buttons is the real one? Like I said, she en-US didnt have a chance. en-US A closer examination revealed the en-US counterfeit buttons were a part of an ad for en-US a registry cleaner of some sort. Clicking en-US either of the 2 Start Download buttons en-US would result in it installing not the program en-US she was trying to install but some sort of en-US system optimization program along with en-US who knows what else. No wonder so many en-US people are getting their systems hijacked! en-US Luckily there is an answer to this en-US dilemma. Yes it is still a very good idea to en-US learn to recognize ads but there is a tool out en-US there that can cut down on the number of en-US ads you are subjected to. Fire up your web en-US browser and go to en-US www.adblockplus.orgen-US and en-US take a look at AdBlock Plus. Its free (an en-US open source project) and blocks most (but en-US unfortunately not all) internet ads including en-US the ones found on en-US download.comen-US or en-US speedtest.neten-US .en-US With Internet Explorer, click the Install en-US for Internet Explorer button and then the en-US Run option that appears at the bottom of en-US the page. Follow the steps clicking Install en-US and Enable when prompted. The steps are en-US similar for Firefox and Chrome and there en-US are no counterfeit ads here waiting to hijack en-US your click. Once installed Adblock Plus will en-US be represented as a little red stop sign icon en-US to the right of your browsers status bar or en-US address bar. From that little stop sign icon en-US you can pause Adblock and see just how en-US many ads the program blocks on whatever en-US page youre looking at.en-US Again, Adblock Plus doesnt work for en-US every ad. Ive noticed that when I go to en-US Yahoos portal page I still see ads even with en-US Adblock running, but just about everyen-US -en-US where else is ad free. en-US If its too late and youve already had a en-US download hijacked and now you have all en-US sorts of crazy toolbars and things installed, en-US dont panic! Start by going to your computen-US -en-US ers control panel and to the add/remove en-US programs app. You should be able to sort en-US the programs by date and you can then en-US remove them one by one. With your average golf course taking en-US up about 150 acres of land, there has to be a en-US lot involved in preparing for an event such en-US as a hurricane.en-US I spoke to a few course superintendents en-US and got a mind-numbing idea of the scope en-US of such a task. While most of us throw up en-US our hurricane shutters, bring in the garbage en-US cans, purchase supplies and map our en-US venture to high ground, there is much work en-US to do at the golf course to prepare for the en-US worst.en-US A golf course presents a myriad of en-US objects for a storm to blow around and en-US destroy. There are flags, ball washers, water en-US coolers, trash cans, signs, and lots of trees, en-US any of which can become deadly projectiles en-US in hurricane-force winds.en-US At Hammock Creek Golf Club in Palm en-US City, there has been a plan in place for well en-US over a decade. The golf en-US carts will be put on to charge so that they en-US have full power when they are needed after en-US the storm. en-US One item that I didnt think of was the en-US rope and stakes that are usually put out to en-US direct golf cart traffic. Having these flying en-US through the air to be wrapped around en-US who-knows-what is not a pleasant thought. en-US There are also portable toilets on some en-US courses that need to be brought in. While en-US these will come in handy should water and en-US sewers not be flowing en-US in the days after a en-US storm, they become a en-US large missile when en-US winds reach high en-US speeds.en-US Some courses en-US have more than just en-US the golf course and en-US clubhouse to worry en-US about. Many have en-US pools and tennis en-US courts as part of the en-US facility. At the PGA en-US Country Club in St. en-US Lucie West, the staff en-US will sink all of the en-US pool furniture in the en-US pool itself. Winden-US -en-US screens and nets will en-US be removed from the tennis courts.en-US In addition to all the wind damage that en-US comes with a hurricane, you also have a en-US tremendous amount of rain, which means en-US flooding. Golf courses are designed to drain en-US well and have ponds and lakes to store en-US water. One hopes that they can handle the en-US extra.en-US Once the storm has passed, the courses en-US staff will survey the damage. Chain saws en-US will be cranked up to remove felled trees en-US and other debris. Insurance companies will en-US be contacted, but everyone realizes that the en-US course comes second to peoples homes. en-US Getting the course back up and running en-US will be secondary to helping out those in en-US need. A golf course considers itself to be en-US part of the community and almost any en-US course would lend a hand to its neighbors en-US who need help with cleanup or damage.en-US I was hoping that this season I wouldnt en-US have to trade my driver and putter for a en-US hammer and nails. Looks like my carpenter en-US skills will soon come in handy. I hope and en-US pray that we are lucky and fortunate. I also en-US wish that our good luck doesnt mean that en-US others have to suffer. When it comes to en-US hurricanes, remember that your safety and en-US that of your family is worth far more than en-US anything else in this world. The rest is just en-US stuff. Unfortunately, it is a question that more en-US families face as the Opioid Crisis is increasing en-US the number of substance abuse cases in The en-US United States. According to the Commission en-US on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opien-US -en-US oid Crisis, In 2015, 27 million people reporten-US -en-US ed current use of illegal drugs or abuse of preen-US-en-US scription drugs. The addict may quickly spend en-US all their money or do anything to get more.en-US Deflection, such as the typical addict has en-US an uncanny ability to sense they may have to en-US answer questions about themselves, so they en-US will change the discussion.en-US Perpetual victim, meaning no matter the en-US extent of what happens to the addict, whether en-US dropping a fork or losing a job, he or she will en-US blame others and describe how this was an en-US action against them. Even if someone admits en-US they have an addiction, they will still play the en-US victim role.en-US Obsession, as in an addicted person may en-US spend more and more time and energy focusen-US -en-US ing on ways of getting hold of their substance, en-US and in some cases how to use it. That obsesen-US -en-US sion may cross over into everyday behaviors.en-US Sudden changes in appetite, and Dr. Fried en-US says to keep an eye on whether your loved en-US one spends extend amounts of time without en-US any interest in eating or continuously eats, en-US especially foods they used to not be interested en-US in. Unexplained weight loss or gain is a relaten-US -en-US ed sign.en-US Also, sleep patterns similar to the food en-US above, addicts have a tendency of extreme en-US sleep patterns. Either sleeping too much/stayen-US-en-US ing in bed (also a sign of depression) or sleepen-US-en-US ing very little or not at all.en-US Fried reminds you to follow your gut. No en-US one wants to believe their loved one is an en-US addict. You have to believe your instincts if en-US you feel it may be the case.
