en-US 2 en-USCommunity notesen-USSt. Lucie Countys Code Fine en-US Amnesty program generates 11 en-US percent complianceen-USIn an eort to reduce the backlog en-US of roughly 500 outstanding code en-US compliance violations on properties in en-US the unincorporated area of the county, en-US the St. Lucie County Board of County en-US Commissioners created a Code Fine en-US Amnesty program. Implemented during en-US the month of May, this pilot program en-US helped 56 participants (11 percent) bring en-US their homes and/or businesses up to en-US current codes, while generating more than en-US $34,000 in fees.en-US In April St. Lucie Countys Code en-US Compliance sta sent letters to roughly 500 en-US property owners who had outstanding code en-US violations, which resulted in liens against en-US their property. ese property owners had en-US the entire month of May to resolve the code en-US violations and in return have their nes en-US reduced by 90 percent.en-US is pilot program was promoted heavily en-US through a user-friendly webpage and en-US registration process; a video public service en-US announcement; press releases and social en-US media posts; as well as meetings with the en-US local Realtors association; Chamber of en-US Commerce and others. e goal of this program was   to bring en-USproperties into compliance and improve en-US the aesthetics of a neighborhood not to en-US generate revenue, explained Monica en-US Graziani, St. Lucie County Building and en-US Code Regulation Manager.en-US Since St. Lucie County still has more en-US than $3 million in outstanding code en-US nes, ocials intend to oer the amnesty en-US program again in the future.en-US Once you have a lien on a property, it en-US creates an obstacle for the homeowner. e en-US program makes it easier for owners to move en-US forward with permitted improvements en-US or selling of their home. We hope more en-US citizens will take advantage of this program en-US in the future, added Graziani.en-USCommunity calendar SATURDAY, AUG. 26 Orchids, Orchids & More Plant Sale: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens, 2410 S.E. One of the en-US companies that has navigated the bumps en-US in the road and found tremendous sucen-US -en-US cess along the way is McCurdy & Co. en-US Realty.en-US The company is one of the premier real en-US estate companies serving all of Floridas en-US Treasure Coast and has more than 25 en-US years of experience in the field. The comen-US -en-US pany offers custom real estate services en-US and specializes in waterfront, residential, en-US golf course communities, equestrian and en-US commercial properties in communities en-US such as Port St. Lucie, Fort Pierce, Jensen en-US Beach, Vero Beach and up and down en-US Hutchinson Island. en-US The owner and broker, Joanne en-US McCurdy, has been involved in real estate en-US since 1986 and has been a licensed broen-US -en-US ker since 2011. She said each year is geten-US -en-US ting a little busier and the market is on an en-US increase and has rebounded, with new en-US construction ongoing and commercial en-US properties moving.en-US Its a good time to invest in real estate, en-US as well as to sell; this is a good time all the en-US way around, Ms. McCurdy said. en-US She initially was drawn to real estate en-US because of a love of architecture and the en-US various styles of homes, and that passion en-US led her to buy and sell some properties of en-US her own back in the 1980s and she deciden-US -en-US ed to pursue it professionally. She is origen-US -en-US inally from New jersey, but moved to the en-US Treasure Coast in 1974 and enjoys the en-US area immensely.en-US I think its wonderful, we dont have en-US the high prices of South Florida and we en-US have the warmer weather and closer to en-US Orlando and Palm Beach, she said. en-US Were right on the oceanfront and I en-US think this is a great place to be.en-US McCurdy & Company Realty team is en-US knowledgeable and certified in luxury en-US and waterfront properties, as well as en-US foreclosures and short sales and has a en-US firm understanding on doing whatever it en-US takes to assist homeowners and home en-US buyers. The team also credits its excellent en-US customer service and wants their clients en-US to have the best possible experience with en-US all their real estate needs, and Ms. en-US McCurdy said that is one of her top prien-US -en-US orities each and every day.en-US The biggest change in this area has en-US been growth; when I started, Port St. en-US Lucie was mostly vacant land and in real en-US estate you have to roll with the punches, en-US Ms. McCurdy said, because theres been en-US many years where it wasnt good or the en-US market fell. So, we did foreclosures and en-US when vacant land is selling you have to en-US do that or you have to know how to do en-US short sales.en-US Youve got to change when real estate en-US changes.en-US But one of the other notable aspects of en-US the office is that old adage of any successen-US -en-US ful business: location, location, location.en-US One of the reasons I opened this en-US office in 2013 is because we were missing en-US a high-end boutique office, which they en-UShave in Vero Beach and Stuart and all en-US over South Florida, but we didnt have en-US one in Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie, en-US Ms. McCurdy said. I wanted a wateren-US -en-US front, custom, boutique practice and its en-US been very good. We have a good locaen-US -en-US tion; we have good walk-ins and high-en-US end buyers.en-US In the end, Ms. McCurdy doesnt look en-US for a massive quantity of agents and en-US instead seeks out those who have the en-US ability to truly relate to customers and en-US has a similar outlook to hers, which en-US involves a strong team and a cohesive en-US unit.en-US I think you have to give your buyer en-US what they want, and so you have to really en-US listen to their needs, Ms. McCurdy said. en-US I think if youre true to what they really en-US want, then you can close the sale.en-US For more information, visit en-USwww.en-US mccurdyrealty.com/en-US or call 772-242-en-US 8436. Moore Eleen-US -en-US mentary School in Fort Pierce. Ucola Baren-US -en-US rett-Baxter will be taking the helm and en-US brings with her a wealth of experience. She en-US has overseen a variety of grade levels and is en-US taking over a school that has rapidly risen en-US from being an F school just a few years en-US ago to a C grade last year.en-US That run of success is one Ms. Baren-US -en-US rett-Baxter is looking to build on in the en-US years to come.en-US I am living the dream right now, and I en-US love being here at C.A. Moore, Ms. Baren-US -en-US rett-Baxter said. I have always had a pasen-US-en-US sion for working with students who need en-US someone to be that advocate for them and en-US there are places where theyre going to get it en-US where teachers show up to work. en-US But then there are those special places en-US where they need that cheerleader behind en-US them, and C.A. Moore is certainly one of en-US those places where students need that advoen-US-en-US cate and that push and someone that knows en-US they have the ability to do it and is constanten-US-en-US ly reminding them that they can do it.en-US She got her start at being a principal at en-US Parkway Elementary in Port St. Lucie for en-US eight years and transferred to Fort Pierce en-US Westwood where she was at the helm for en-US two years and then served at Village Green en-US Elementary School for two more years en-US before arriving at C.A. Moore.en-US St. Lucie County Public Schools has put a en-US greater focus on the quality of education en-US and attention to detail through the staff, and en-US she credited the personnel at C.A. Moore en-US Elementary with what she has seen so far. en-US Everyone that is here that has been here en-US for the duration as well as the new staff en-US coming in have a vested interest in seeing en-US students succeed, so there is nothing more en-US important than having a staff that is willing en-US to do whatever it takes, she said. en-US She said there is a remarkable number of en-US teachers who have been with the school en-US since its inception, including some who en-US have worked there for 30 years from mainen-US -en-US tenance workers to teachers and that conen-US -en-US sistency is key.en-US Having been at the high-school level, Ms. en-US Barrett-Baxter knows that success in a stuen-US -en-US dents prep years and in college begins at the en-US elementary level. Therefore, as the school en-US sets the tone for them when they go into en-US middle school, she wants to build students en-US as learners and ensure that they understand en-US that education continues to bring challenges en-US the students must be prepared to meet.en-US Its not always going to be something that en-US comes to you naturally, and sometimes you en-US really have to work at it, she said, and that en-US perseverance is something that students en-US have to learn, and its a lifelong lesson.en-US With a heightened attention to technoloen-US-en-US gy and the changes in requirements for even en-US elementary students, C.A. Moore Elementaen-US-en-US ry will be raising the bar for youths to help en-US keep them moving in the right direction. en-US The expectations create rewards for the stuen-US-en-US dents later in life, and she has goals for the en-US school that are targeted toward proficiency en-US and active involvement among all interested en-USparties at the school.en-US When you look at our data, we need en-US more students to be at the proficient level, en-US and thats one of the areas we are targeting en-US for this year, Ms. Barrett-Baxter said. en-US Another area is engaging our students and en-US our parents, and we have put things into en-US place to ensure that students arent just comen-US -en-US ing to school because they have to, but en-US theyre coming to school because they want en-US to be here and making this one of the best en-US parts of their day.en-US She also credits the community partneren-US -en-US ships that have developed over the years, en-US such as the local Elks Clubs food, clothes, en-US and school-supplies drives, Mount Bethel en-US Church and its mentoring program, and en-US other community agencies to become active en-US participants in the students lives.en-US For more information about St. Lucie en-US County Public Schools, please visit en-US www.en-US stlucie.k12.fl.us/en-US or call 772-429-3600.en-USElementary school welcomes new principalBy Gaylon Parkergparker@hometownnewsol.com en-USBarrett-Baxteren-USI am living the dream right now, and I love being here at C.A. en-US Moore. I think the city should en-US follow suit in this matter.en-US Thank you.en-USCan bicyclers sometimes ride in en-US the center of the lane like a car?en-USThere was a post in the Hometown News en-US suggesting that bicycle owners be required en-US to pay for license plates, similar to vehicles.en-US From the text, it is unclear whether the en-US writer is annoyed the road must be shared en-US with un-motorized, two-wheelers or if he en-US doesnt think its fair they dont contribute to en-US the expenses of road maintenance, and en-US especially bicycle lanes.en-US I question whether he/she is aware of en-US Florida laws. By law, unless there is a bicycle en-US lane available, bicyclists are supposed to use en-US a vehicle lane and are encouraged to ride en-US near the center of the lane to avoid side en-US swipe collisions. i.e., bicycle lanes are more en-US beneficial to motorists than bicyclists.en-US Regarding licensing, it would probably en-US cost more to administer licensing bicycles en-US than the revenue derived. Also, although en-US Im not aware of any studies, it is likely the en-US vast majority of bicycle owners legally own en-US and operate vehicles and do not operate en-US their bicycle and vehicle at the same time.en-US I ride for exercise. If Im required to en-US license my bicycle, shouldnt I also have a en-US license plate for my tush when I walk for en-US exercise? Should the plate be mounted en-US above or beneath my Wide Load plate?en-USLane hogsen-USThe WAKE UP and read this rant en-US explained why cars need to stop at the white en-US line so they activate the signal. There are en-US additional reasons why cars need to group en-US together while waiting at intersections.en-US Cars leaving two-car lengths between en-US their vehicle and the next are also very disen-US -en-US respectful to the cars behind them. When en-US fewer cars can enter a turning lane, others en-US have to wait through more than one cycle en-US before they can proceed through the interen-US -en-US section. When cars are spaced far apart as en-US the light turns, fewer cars can make it en-US through the light.en-US Many of the drivers who are hogging the en-US lanes are texting or using that space as their en-US office.en-US I watched one gal sitting way back from en-US the white line in the right, left turning lane. en-US When her light was green, she sat there en-US while three cars in the left, left lane proceeden-US -en-US ed through the light. When she finally en-US looked up and pulled up to the white line, en-US her light was red. Think about how this en-US inconveniences so many people.en-US Lane hogging causes more traffic backen-US -en-US ups. It causes people to be sitting in traffic en-US instead of being at their jobs being producen-US-en-US tive or being home with their families.en-USSurge Shielden-USI just read that a person was dissatisfied en-US with the Surge Shield protection that FP&L en-US offers.en-US You do not have to subscribe to it. It is not en-US mandatory.en-US I do subscribe to it and the way I look at en-US it, it is insurance on my appliances.en-US When I had a very bad surge of electricity, en-US it burned out my stove panel, softener en-US machine, fan, etc.en-US I filed a claim with FP&L and they paid en-US for everything that was damaged 100 per en-US cent. It is worth it to me to have this surge en-US protection.en-USVeterans' Benefitsen-USIt is clear that there is a lot of misunderen-US -en-US standing about veterans benefits. A recent en-US ranter mentioned that he is not eligible for en-US "veteran's preference" for employment and en-US seems to think the "VA" made that determien-US -en-US nation; when in fact, it is our elected Repreen-US-en-US sentatives in Congress who decide which en-US benefits certain veterans are eligible for. en-US Some benefits are administered by the states en-US and also have different eligibility requireen-US -en-US ments, usually determined (again) by electen-US-en-US ed members of the State legislatures. It is en-US important to know how candidates will vote en-US on Veteran's Benefits issues before you elect en-US them to office.en-US Veterans (and their families if the veteran en-US is deceased) need to ask the right people for en-US help in determining their benefits. For en-US example, the regional office of the Veteran's en-US Affairs Dept can be reached at 800-827-en-US 1000. Most Veterans' Service Organizations en-US (DAV, AMVETS, VFW, American Legion, en-US etc) have local representatives which can be en-USfound in the phone book. The county goven-US -en-US ernments also have numbers listed where en-US veterans can get good information and often en-US get help in applying for benefits. en-US I can't list them all here, but please take en-US the time to look into what you are eligible en-US for, because it does vary by time in service, en-US service dates, assignments while on active en-US duty, etc.en-USRe: renting a surge en-US protector from FPLen-USSolution: I purchased my own surge proen-US-en-US tector at Home Depot for about $60 and en-US installed it inside of my own fuse box. The county and company en-US entered into an arrangement that en-US encourages Maverick Boats to create 100 en-US jobs in a future expansion and the counen-US -en-US ty has offered the money in tax abateen-US -en-US ments if certain conditions are met.en-US The expansion will see more than en-US $6.5M pumped into future operations at en-US the current facility on St. Lucie Bouleen-US -en-US vard and the average wages of future en-US staff will be nearly $17 per hour. That en-US step, said St. Lucie County Commission en-US Chairman Chris Dzadovsky, is not only en-US a boost to the company but to the county en-US as well because it helps circulate more en-US local money into the economy.en-US What we were able to accomplish en-US because there was such good cooperaen-US-en-US tion with the owner and his group as en-US well as our fast-tracking we were able en-US to achieve in an eight-week period puten-US -en-US ting their plan together, with the site en-US plan and the architectural review and en-US getting through the permit process and en-US achieving agreements where they will en-US build in two phases, Chairman Dzaen-US-en-US dovsky said.en-US The St. Lucie County Commission en-US approved the plan last week as a partial en-US reward for the more than three decades en-US it has been operating on the Treasure en-US Coast. It also was a measure to ensure en-US the company will not seek a move elseen-US -en-US where. Maverick runs much of its operaen-US-en-US tions out of the St. Lucie County Airen-US -en-US port, but that situation is inconvenient en-US for the company, Chairman Dzadovsky en-US said.en-US Now that the recession has ended en-US and the economy is turning around, they en-US see strong boat orders and they wanted en-US to remain in St. Lucie County but be able en-US to expand exponentially, Chairman en-US Dzadovsky said. So Scott Deal the en-US owner came to us and engaged our en-US business navigator Peter Jones and also en-US worked with Pete Tesch (President of the en-US Economic Development Council of St. en-US Lucie County) and Jill Marasa.en-US The negotiations meant the county en-US and company could get added assistance en-US from the Florida Economic Developen-US -en-US ment Council and combine that with job en-US incentive grants.en-US The company has two years to comen-US -en-US plete the process. Then the money would en-US be paid at about 20 percent a yearfrom en-US 2019 to 2023, but failure to meet those en-US goals would cancel the grant as would a en-US circumstance where the average wage at en-US the company shifts to less than $35,000.en-US They plan to build a 135,000-square-en-US foot facility of which about 100,000 en-US square feet of that is going to be manuen-US-en-US facturing space and the other is going to en-US be office and storage space, Chairman en-US Dzadovsky said. Then phase two is en-US going to be another 100,000-square foot en-US building, depending on the success of en-US phase one.en-US The company has more than 270 peoen-US-en-US ple on the payroll now. The expansion en-US could take about two years to complete en-US with 50 new jobs created one year and en-US the same number the next. Thereafter, en-US the incentive money will be paid out in en-US 20-percent increments between 2019 en-US and 2023, and the company must submit en-US reports pertaining to job creation and en-US the pay structure of the workers hired. en-US Chairman Dzadovsky said the total en-US number of jobs created actually could be en-US as many as 200 if all goes according to en-US plan at the end of phase two of the en-US expansion.en-USBoat Company gets boostBy Gaylon Parkergparker@hometownnewsol.com en-USSundays at 8:30 a.m. at Unity Church in en-US Jensen Beach. en-USPlease call (772) 777-3250 en-US in the mornings to reserve your seat. en-US en-US Weekly Storytime Jam:en-US Tuesdays at en-US 10:30 a.m., Zora Neale Hurston Branch en-US Library, 3008 Avenue D, Fort Pierce. en-US Designed for ages 2-5, this interactive en-US program will have your young ones clapping, en-US dancing, singing and listening to stories each en-US week. en-US For more information, call (772) 462-en-US 2154 or visit en-US http://library.stlucieco.gov en-US or en-US email en-US rovitoa@stlucieco.org.en-US en-US Restless Leg Syndrome support group:en-US en-US There is new updated information to share en-US regarding this debilitating disease, as well as en-US free brochures. en-US For more information, call en-US Mary at (423) 390-1187.en-US en-US The Treasure Coast Woodcarversen-US meet en-US on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to en-US noon at the Walton Community Center, en-US 11090 Ridge Ave., Fort Pierce, (near the en-US Walton Road and Lake Shore Drive en-US intersection.) en-US 9 en-USHow strong is your password?en-USSen-UStrong password requirements (like en-US using upper and lower cases, at least en-US one number and maybe a special en-US character) cause a lot of frustration for en-US computer users. There is however, a way to en-US manage your passwords without sacrificing en-US security for convenience and the best part is en-US the solution is available for free. en-US Lets start at the beginning the en-US computers login screen. en-US Whether you are running Windows, en-US Mac, Linux or any of the other operating en-US systems out there, when the system boots en-US up it will look for a password. Now sure, I en-US know what some of you are thinking, I en-US dont have to enter a password when my en-US machine boots up so you must be wrong. en-US Well, that isnt entirely true, its just that en-US most machines will give the user the ability en-US to either auto logon or not require a en-US password at all at boot up. This is one of en-US those instances where people will sacrifice en-US security for convenience. People dont want en-US to be bothered entering their password en-US every time so the system gets set up without en-US it. en-US Sure its convenient but the problem is en-US now anyone who sits in front of your en-US machine and turns it on will be able to get en-US in and have access to all your stuff. Many en-US people choose to go this route thinking that en-US hey, Im the only one that uses this en-US machine so I dont need it asking for a en-US password every time but if we are en-US talking about a laptop (which is portable) en-US that can be a disaster waiting to happen if it en-US ever gets lost or stolen. If its a desktop en-US machine the argument seems a little more en-US valid but it wont protect you if there is a en-US break in or some other unauthorized user en-US gains access to your machine (either en-US physically or gets in through the internet). en-US The fact of the matter is that if your en-US machine is connected to the network then en-US there should be a password in place to en-US protect your files. en-US The next area where people sacrifice en-US security is in password strength. Weak en-US passwords are passwords that may be easy en-US to remember but they are often short en-US dictionary words that can be cracked in a en-US matter of minutes by any of the available en-US password cracking utilities that are out en-US there. Passwords like god, monkey, or en-US any other word found in the dictionary may en-US be short and easy to remember but they are en-US also the first things that these password en-US cracking utilities will try. Thats why many en-US sites (and programs) will insist en-US on including upper and lower en-US cases, some numbers and even a en-US special character or two. en-US MonKey!387 is a hell of a lot en-US harder for someone to crack en-US than just the word monkey. en-US Sure, it may be a little more en-US inconvenient but using a weak en-US password will just give you a en-US false sense of security. en-US The next shortcut people take en-US is in using one password for en-US everything. The reasoning en-US people use for this one is well, I cant en-US remember a different password for en-US everything so I just use the same one en-US everywhere I go and never have a problem. en-US I will be the first to admit, using the same en-US password for the windows login, email, etc. en-US is convenient but a problem can arise if en-US your password does get cracked its en-US common practice for hackers (when they en-US discover some ones user name and en-US password) to try that same username and en-US password pair everywhere. Again there are en-US tools out there that will allow someone to en-US enter a username and password and the en-US program then goes and tries them on en-US hundreds of sites (like AOL and Facebook) en-US and then provides the hacker a list of all the en-US sites where the password works. Using the en-US same password everywhere is one of the en-US ways hackers are able to take over all of the en-US services that you use. It may be a bit en-US inconvenient but using a different password en-US for every site is a lot safer than using one en-US password everywhere. en-US Earlier in this column I mentioned that en-US there is a free solution out there that solves en-US these issues. Open up your browser and en-US pull up en-US www.keepass.comen-US. Keepass is a free en-US (open source) program that will allow you en-US to store and manage all of your passwords en-US in one place so you dont have to rely on en-US post it notes all over your desk. Use Keepass en-US to create unique strong passwords for all en-US of your sites and you wont need to sacrifice en-US security for convenience. en-US Sean McCarthy fixes computers. COMPUTE THIS en-USSEAN MCCARTHY en-UScondominium building. en-US Its pretty much in there right around 65 en-US feet, plus maybe a small percentage for en-US architectural embellishments, she said. en-US Commissioner Jeremiah Johnson wonen-US-en-US dered if other downtown zoning might en-US cover building heights. en-US Our Downtown Overlay District doesnt en-US talk about heights? he asked. en-US The Downtown Overlay does not specify en-US a height, while the South Beach Overlay en-US does put one in place, Ms. Grohall responden-US -en-US ed. It might have been the intent to have en-US one put in, but that was not the outcome.en-US Commissioner Rufus Alexander quesen-US -en-US tioned if the lack of a limit might have been en-US intentional. en-US So youre telling me our infamous leaden-US -en-US ers didnt have an intent to include a height en-US limit but now we can intend to include one en-US now? he said. So evidently they didnt en-US intend to have one, right?en-US I cant speak for what went on in the en-US past, she answered. All I can tell you is that en-US there is not currently a height limit in place.en-US When Ms. Grohall asked the Commisen-US -en-US sion to suggest some height limits, she disen-US -en-US covered none of its members had an appeen-US -en-US tite to do so. en-US I dont have any interest in introducing a en-US height limit downtown, Mayor Hudson en-US said. en-US Commissioner Reginald Sessions conen-US -en-US curred.en-US I like it the way it is, he said. en-USCommissioner Thomas Perona hinted en-US that the Commission could make excepen-US-en-US tions if it decided on an appropriate height en-US limit downtown.en-US Theres probably more exceptions than en-US not -I mean it depends on the application en-US and the place, he said. Therefore if we did en-US have some general restriction, wed definiteen-US-en-US ly have an ability to have an appeal to the en-US Commission to be able to decide if that paren-US -en-US ticular use was something we wanted to see en-US or not.en-US When Commissioner Perona asked if any en-US developer had ever submitted an applicaen-US -en-US tion for anything over 60 feet, the Planning en-US Director said market forces had so far limiten-US -en-US ed that effort. en-US We havent, and some of that could be en-US due to the construction costs, Ms. Grohall en-US explained. Construction costs typically for en-US a one-to-three-story building are, lets just en-US say a million dollars for round numbers. en-US Construction costs for a four-to-five-story en-US building go up by about 10 times, and when en-US you go over that, your costs increase signifien-US -en-US cantly. Theres a significant amount of suben-US -en-US terranean work that has to be done, and of en-US course vertical accessibility issues. Theres a en-US big differential in access when youre en-US talking about an eight story building, so en-US costs may have been a limiting factor in the en-US past.en-US Commissioner Sessions worried that en-US implementing a height limit might discouren-US -en-US age future investment in the already tight en-US downtown area.en-USAs density increases and you have a small en-US land mass, what can no longer spread out en-US must go up, he said. So Im really not, at en-US least from my perspective, putting a limitaen-US -en-US tion. I question the ones that we have in en-US place, let alone the ones that we dont have en-US in place. As far as downtown is concerned, en-US Im not interested in putting a restriction on en-US it for that reason.en-US Commissioner Jeremiah Johnson agreed, en-US saying he believed a 65-foot height limit was en-US discussed by a previous city commission but en-US never implemented. en-US I just remember we talked about it when en-US I was on the Planning Board, he said. en-US Maybe the City Commission never ratified en-US it. I dont believe that a restriction should be en-US in place because it comes per application: en-US We can evaluate it and look at the lay of the en-US land.en-US For her part Mayor Hudson didnt want en-US any future downtown height limits to disen-US -en-US may a potential developer of the old King en-US Power Plant property on North Indian River en-US Drive, which the city has tried to market for en-US the last several years and even turned down en-US one development due to community resisen-US -en-US tance.en-US Were going to have a Request For Proen-US-en-US posal for the King Power Plant property, en-US right? she asked. Is this property included en-US in what were talking about right now and en-US considered downtown?en-US Ms. Grohall allayed her fears.en-US There is no height limit for the area en-US where the King property is, she explained. en-US Commissioner Perona believes the Comen-US -en-US mission needs to understand the imporen-US -en-US tance of a citys wow factor when determinen-US -en-US ing any future height limitations. en-USThe interest that I have is not so much en-US the height, but the vista of the city from the en-US river perspective -its very, very important, en-US he insisted. If you think about all of the en-US communities that you come over a bridge en-US [to] and you take a look at, thats the image en-US that you have. Your en-US moment to be a hero to those who en-US defend our freedom and their families en-US comes this Labor Day weekend. en-US Every day the men and women of our en-US armed forces put their lives on the line so en-US that we can safely enjoy our swimming en-US pools, cookouts and time with loved ones. en-US When it is time for them to come home, en-US many return bearing the scars of that en-US service. Others come home in a flag-draped en-US coffin.en-US Patriot Golf Day is about these fine men en-US and women and their families. Should you en-US tee it up over this Labor Day holiday en-US weekend, please do so at a participating en-US course. Proceeds from your round will go en-US to the families of those who have been en-US injured or killed defending our great en-US nation. en-US To fully appreciate Patriot Golf Days en-US mission, its important for you to know how en-US it came to be.en-US Brad and Brock Bucklin, twins born in en-US Grand Rapids, Michigan, were part of a en-US family of five sons of Duane Duane Buck en-US and Dawn Bucklin.en-US The boys grew up to become fine young en-US men. Trying to find direction in his life, en-US Brock followed his brother into the en-US military, enlisting a year after his brother in en-US August of 2004. In the military Brock found en-US his way and told his father that he planned en-US to enter Officer Training School and make en-US the Army his career. en-US Brock was assigned to the 1st Battalion, en-US 68th Armor Regiment, 3rd Heavy Brigade en-US Combat Team, and 4th Infantry Division of en-US Fort Carson, Colorado. In December 2005, en-US he was called to service in Iraq.en-US On May 31, 2006, 28-year-old Corporal en-US Brock Bucklin was assisting a contractor in en-US identifying equipment for transport at en-US Forward Operating Base GABE, on the outen-US -en-US skirts of Baqubah, 40 miles northeast of en-US Baghdad. en-US The civilian contractors were responsible en-US for moving concrete barriers, the largest 12 en-US feet long, six feet high and four feet wide. en-US Each barrier weighs as much as 10 tons and en-US while they were moving them onto trailers en-US one of the trucks became stuck.en-US A cargo chain was attached between the en-US truck and another to pull it out. As the en-US workers stood off to the side, the chain en-US snapped and a broken link found Brock, en-US slicing an artery in his neck.en-US Medics arrived and provided treatment en-US to Brock. Eighteen minutes later, a en-US MEDEVAC helicopter transported him to en-US LSA Anaconda Air Force Hospital. A en-US half-hour later Brock Bucklin, having en-US served only 22 months, had died.en-US It is a tragedy when a son or daughter en-US dies before you. Its unnatural. Its the thing en-US thats unacceptable and most troubling, en-US said his father Buck.en-US Brad, stationed in Germany, was allowed en-US to accompany his brothers coffin home to en-US Grand Rapids. Then-Captain Dan Rooney, en-US a PGA Professional from Broken Arrow, en-US Oklahoma, and member of the Oklahoma en-US Air National Guard, happened to be on that en-US same flight as it carried home the body of en-US Corporal Bucklin.en-US The plane landed at 11:35 pm, and en-US Rooney watched through the planes en-US window as the Bucklins awaited Brad and en-US the coffin of their late son. Brocks son, en-US Jacob, was clinging to the leg of his mother. en-US The pilot had requested that passengers en-US remain in their seats until the remains of en-US the fallen hero could be transferred to his en-US family. Rooney looked up and saw that half en-US of the passengers had left the plane. In that en-US moment, Rooney was inspired to give back en-US to the families of fallen heroes.en-US A little over a year after Brocks funeral, en-US Rooney called Buck, letting him know that en-US his son, along with all the families of those en-US who had perished or became disabled in en-US the line of duty, would not be forgotten.en-US I am an ordinary person that has been en-US blessed with the extraordinary opportunity en-US to be the flight leader on the Patriot Golf en-US Day mission, says Rooney. I simply en-US planted a small seed which has been en-US cultivated by PGA Professionals and great en-US citizens around the United States.en-US Brock Bucklins son Jacob, now a en-US teenager, is the recipient of a scholarship en-US generated from Rooneys vision for en-US honoring fallen heroes The Folds of en-US Honor Foundation, and its largest fundraisen-US -en-US er, Patriot Golf Day.en-US It was good to know that something en-US good came from this, said Buck. There are en-US a lot of other sons and daughters who did en-US not come home.en-US Never could I imagine what it was that en-US Dan Rooney wanted to do, continued en-US Buck. It was truly en-US an historic and memorable event!! en-US Baseball, apple pie and mosquitoes, all en-US these things are synonymous with our en-US American way of life. Since we spend more en-US and more of our free time relaxing en-US outdoors, these pesky creatures can make en-US life extremely uncomfortable and in some en-US cases, dangerous. Mosquitoes can be more en-US then just a menace; they can carry diseases en-US such as Malaria and West Nile Virus, just en-US to name a few. West Nile Virus has been a en-US menace for the past few years and its en-US presence has been spreading yearly. As you en-US can see, controlling mosquitoes in your en-US yard can be both beneficial for your sanity en-US as well as your health.en-US Before we talk about ways to help en-US control these pests, here are a few mosquien-US -en-US to facts. Mosquitoes have four stages of en-US development: the egg, larva, pupa, and en-US adult. Their larva and pupa stages are en-US spent in water. When the adult mosquitoes en-US emerge into the adult stage, the first thing en-US they want is your blood. Keep in mind that en-US only the female will bite. The blood en-US supplies the mosquito with the protein en-US they need for the development of her eggs. en-US The cycle then begins all over again. You en-US can see that if this continuous cycle were en-US allowed to go un-checked, you would be in en-US for a miserable summer. This year will en-US probably be a bad year for infestation en-US because of the heavy rains we have had the en-US past couple of months. There is plenty of en-US standing water for these critters to breed en-US in. en-US There are, however, many steps you can en-US take to help control these pesky critters. en-US The first thing you need to do is walk en-US around your property and try to remove en-US any old tin cans, containers and old tires. en-US Clean your gutters so they are not clogged en-US and hold standing water. If you have an en-US ornamental pond, stock it with fish. If you en-US have birdbaths and fountains, change the en-US water twice a week to keep the water from en-US getting stagnant. en-US There are also other steps you can take en-US to control the infestations such as spraying en-US the perimeter of your yard with a designaten-US -en-US ed mosquito spray. These sprays can be en-US purchased at most retail garden centers en-US and come in sprayer containers that can be en-US attached to your hose. Use and follow label en-US directions carefully! Lighting a fire is not just for en-US wintertime. The smoke from the fire is a en-US natural deterrent to mosquitoes and it also en-US adds a warm feeling to your outdoor en-US palace.en-US There is yet another way to help deter en-US the pesky critters. You can line your en-US outdoor area with Citronella Geranium en-US plants. These plants are an annual that can en-US grow to be as large as 2 feet. The plant has en-US a distinctive citronella scent. The scent is en-US readily released when you rub or crush the en-US leaves of the plant. It has been said that the en-US plant can deter mosquitoes but I have not en-US been able to actually prove it. Since the en-US plants are attractive, it is worth trying. The en-US plants are easy to care for, plant in full sun en-US and in an area where it will get good air en-US circulation. The plants require a steady en-US source of a good fertilizer to keep the en-US leaves from turning yellow. The plant can en-US also be grown indoors in a container en-US providing you have a good light source. en-US The plant is also known as the Mosquito en-US plant.
