So, this is the one time that I can en-US bring something there and hopefully give en-US something to every single resident all at the en-US same time and bring a smile to everyones en-US face.en-US We want for them to enjoy them for an en-US extended period of time, and we will talk to en-US the staff because many of the residents may en-US not be able to take care of them, themselves.en-US There will be nearly 200 arrangements en-US delivered by Mr. Giordanos shop alone. A group of 20 to 30 people en-US have signed up already, but organizers say en-US there is room for plenty more.en-US I just want to get the awareness out and en-US thats the main goal, said Port St. Lucie resien-US -en-US dent Lisa Cole, who has lived with the conen-US -en-US dition since before 2013 and is participating en-US in the event.en-US Ataxia is a progressive condition that en-US attacks the central nervous system and en-US leaves people without the ability to walk or en-US speak, in some cases. People with ataxia en-UShave problems with coordination en-US because parts of the nervous system that en-US control movement and balance are en-US affected. Ataxia may affect the fingers, en-US hands, arms, legs, body, speech, and eye en-US movements. The word ataxia is often used en-US to describe a symptom of incoordination en-US which can be associated with infections, en-US injuries, other diseases, or degenerative en-US changes in the central nervous system, en-US according to the website at en-US www.ataxia.orgen-US .en-US Its hereditary and my father, my brother en-US and my aunt have it and I discovered it en-US because when I shut my eyes it feels like I en-US am falling, said Ms. Cole, who has hosted en-US two fundraisers per year for the organizaen-US -en-US tion, setting a goal of $10,000 and has raised en-US $1,800 so far. It helps to raise en-US awareness of a rare condition on the part of en-US sufferers and it also can give people who en-US have it to see the warning signs.en-US It is devastating to the people that are en-US affected by it, and they estimate there are en-US 150,000 people in the US, Ms. Lucas said. en-US It isnt so rare that it shouldnt have been en-US heard of, but were working towards getting en-US more out there about it.en-US When they get it, at first they think it is a en-US minor thing and not a symptom, like their en-US coordination and tripping more often and en-US having trouble doing simple things that en-US require fine motor skills.en-US Depending on the type of ataxia, it can en-US progress to the point where people are en-USwheelchair-bound and eventually lead to en-US death, she added. Perhaps the best way to en-US describe it to someone who is unfamiliar en-US with it, is it causes someone to sound and en-US appear as though they are drunk on a peren-US -en-US manent basis, because it affects your speech en-US as well as your coordination, Ms. Lucas en-US said.en-US People who commit to the for 60 will en-US run, walk, bike and even swim 60 miles and en-US gather fundraisers for their efforts. The word is derived from the en-US Spanish word HISPANO which literally en-US means of Spanish speaking origins. Some en-US people mistakenly believe Hispanics, or en-US Latinos if you like, comprise a race; we do en-US not. Hispanics, like North Americans, can en-US be of any race. There are White Hispanics, en-US Black Hispanics, mixed race Hispanics, en-US etc. Hispanics can also be Asian, as in Hisen-US -en-US panic Filipinos. It is interesting to note that en-US Florida, is a Spanish name given to our en-US state by the First White Settlers from Spain. en-US European Spaniards named Florida and en-US erected the first White settlement here and en-US what is now the USA. The Spanish flag flew en-US over Florida for more than 300 years! Prep for that call to tech support en-USWen-USell, it finally happened. Your en-US computer has issues and its time en-US to call for help. It happens to en-US every computer user eventually that en-US dreaded call to tech support. This week, I en-US will share some tips that can make that en-US inevitable call to tech support go smoothly. en-US The first question that you have to ask en-US yourself is: Who are you going to call? en-US That answer depends on the issues you are en-US having. en-US For instance, if you are having Internet en-US connection issues, you may want to call en-US your Internet provider (AT&T, Comcast, en-US Spectrum, or whoever you are using to en-US connect to the Internet). en-US If you are having hardware issues, such as en-US problems accessing a printer or other en-US device, you may need to contact support for en-US that device. en-US For problems with your operating system en-US (Windows wont load, etc.), a call to en-US Microsofts tech support may be in order. en-US If you are having problems with the en-US computer itself (getting errors or beep en-US codes as soon as you turn it on), you may en-US want to call the manufacturer of the en-US computer. en-US Thats a lot of decisions to make even en-US before making the call, but you need to be en-US clear about the nature of the problem. en-US Answering these questions beforehand will en-US help clarify your issues before you make the en-US call. en-US Also, dont forget the warranty. Some en-US devices may carry warranties that last years. en-US It would be frustrating to fix or replace a en-US device only to find out you could have had en-US it fixed under warranty. en-US Once youre clear on whom to call and en-US why, sit in front of the computer when you en-US make the call. There is little that any phone en-US support technician can do for you if you are en-US not sitting in front of the machine. You en-US have to be his eyes and ears so make sure en-US that when you call for help, you are at your en-US computer. en-US After spending some time on hold, en-US (nothing I can help with there) you will en-US finally get someone on the line. Remember: en-US This person is new to your issue and has no en-US idea what you have or have not tried yet. en-US Hes going to ask you questions and en-US perhaps have you click some things. en-US Even if he is having you click something en-US you have already clicked, comments such en-US as, I already tried that, dont help. He en-US hasnt tried anything yet and needs to start en-US somewhere. en-US Also keep in mind that he probably does en-US this type of thing 40 hours a week and en-US knows exactly what hes looking for. Stay focused on his or her instructions en-US and youll usually get through most issues en-US quickly and without too much frustration.en-US Hopefully, you wont have to make that en-US call, but when you do, having as much en-US information in front of you as possible will en-US help. Things such as any specific error en-US messages that may be popping up, be able en-US to describe what you were doing when the en-US problem occurred, and so on. This en-US information is invaluable to the tech en-US support person on the other end of the en-US phone. en-US If you have a quick question, thats en-US great. Just remember that 99 percent of all en-US tech support calls are just quick questions. en-US Its the answer that can drag on for hours.en-US So, how did I come up with this weeks en-US subject matter? Well, Ive been doing en-US remote computer support over the phone en-US for more than 20 years and often spend up en-US to 40 hours a week on the phone helping en-US people walk through their computer issues. en-US I still fix computers and over the years I en-US found that the calls that go quickest are the en-US ones where the caller is at least a little en-US prepared, in front of the computer when en-US they call and follow my instructions en-US precisely without getting distracted along en-US the way. en-US Sean McCarthy fixes computers. A different kind of Fathers Day en-USHen-USappy Fathers Day weekend to all en-US you fathers and father-figures out en-US there. This years Fathers Day will en-US be both especially happy and sad. This one en-US marks the second Fathers Day since my en-US father passed away. Just as I missed my en-US mother so much more on Mothers Day, the en-US same holds true for my father and my late en-US father-in-law. en-US I am also excitedly looking forward to it, en-US as this year marks my first as a grandfather. en-US My grandson, Enzo, will be just over en-US three-months-old, and he is so much fun to en-US be around. My mother and father would en-US have loved him so. en-US As I grow older, I find that I spend more en-US time reminiscing, especially on holidays. I en-US do not regret any part of my life, but there en-US are some Id love to live over or simply en-US spend more time enjoying as they hapen-US -en-US pened. en-US I also think about old friends. Time has en-US taken its fair share of them from me and en-US their families. Just this past week, David en-US Gemberling, one of my friends from high en-US school lost his battle with cancer. We were en-US buddies in school, but lost touch with one en-US another for years after. Then, when I asked en-US my friends on Facebook about a good en-US recommendation on a realtor to list my en-US fathers home, we reconnected.en-US It was good to see him after so many en-US years and just casual conversations via the en-US internet. He hadnt changed. He was same en-US lively, make-you-laugh, friend -to-everyone en-US that I knew from our days in school. I wish en-US we could have played some golf together. en-US We had plans to do just that once he kicked en-US this sickness.en-US As much as I will miss him, the love of en-US his life, Ann Marie Richmond will miss him en-US ten-fold. Cancer is cruel not only to those it en-US infects, but also to those that feel its effects.en-US Another friend of ours feels like he lost en-US his brother. Mac Atha and David have been en-US friends since the age of four. Were not en-US supposed to lose close friends at this point en-US in our lives. Now is when we get to celebrate en-US where we have come to in our lives, the en-US families we have raised and enjoy our en-US slower days together, growing old.en-US I realize that this isnt really a column en-US about golf. This week though, I looked back en-US to the past couple of years and I see the en-US number of wonderful friends and family en-US that have passed. I miss my mother and en-US father tremendously. I miss my friends and en-US feel for their families and close friends. en-US Ive realized just how quickly time does en-US go by and I know that maybe I should have en-US enjoyed the journey more than I have. en-US Every day is a gift. The love of fathers, en-US mothers, brothers, sisters, friends and other en-US family is special. en-US There are times when we need to en-US reminisce. The feelings of happiness and en-US sadness are good to experience. We need en-US both of them.en-US On my first Fathers Day as a grandfather, en-US I plan to enjoy every moment. I will talk en-US with my oldest daughter, who lives in South en-US Carolina. I will have breakfast with my en-US youngest daughter, and see my son and en-US grandson. I en-US hope that en-US all of you en-US enjoy your en-US day. Slow en-US down and en-US take in en-US every en-US second of en-US it. en-US We en-US made our en-US friend David a promise. One day soon, Mac en-US and I, along with another buddy from high en-US school, Greg Smiley, will get together to en-US play that round that was to include David. en-US Well save a spot on the cart for him to be en-US there with us. Well be sure to hit a ball into en-US the woods or water in his honor. We know en-US that hed have his usual grin and a good en-US laugh at that. Well toast him after the en-US round. H en-USappy 15th Anniversary to our en-US Hometown News! While I was not en-USyet on board when we dropped our en-US first edition, I was brought on shortly en-US thereafter and have been around ever since.en-US My time here has been wonderful. I have en-US had the opportunity to do so many things in en-US golf that I never thought possible. I never en-US envisioned myself as a writer. I could tell en-US jokes and tell a story. I have never had any en-US formal schooling in this craft, and I thank en-US those of you who have taken the time to tell en-US me how much you like my writing. I also en-US appreciate those of you who let me know en-US when I have done something wrong. Im far en-US from perfect and knowing the good and the en-US bad helps me to grow.en-US I was honored when asked to contribute to en-US this special anniversary issue. I wasnt really en-US sure what to write. I have been asked on en-US occasion how I came to be the golf columen-US -en-US nist. It was mostly a lot of luck and a few en-US people who believed in me and gave me a en-US chance.en-US When my mother was pregnant with me, en-US she would walk with my father when he en-US played golf after work or on a weekend. It en-US gave them time together and the exercise en-US was good for her and me.en-US My father loved golf. He was never very en-US good at it, but he knew it was a game he en-US could play for his lifetime. My father was 42 en-US when I was born, my mother 41. I was one of en-US those surprises. Knowing that he would not en-US be physically able to play tennis, or basketen-US -en-US ball with me as we grew older, he chose to en-US introduce me to golf.en-US It was a great move. I found a game that I en-US love and in it something that has given me en-US rewards beyond my expectations. My love en-US for golf inspired me to ask the local newspaen-US -en-US per why it stopped publishing its weekly golf en-US column. I was told the guy simply didnt en-US want to do it any more and was asked if I en-US knew of anyone who would like to take his en-US place. I volunteered. I gave the editor a few en-US samples and he gave me a chance.en-US After a few years, things changed and that en-US paper let me go. Fortunately Steve Erlanger, en-US the publisher at the time, remembered me en-US and asked me to reprise my role for The en-US Hometown News. Florida being a golf en-US mecca, his new paper needed a golf column. en-US The rest is history.en-US This job has some of the best perks. I get en-US to play great courses with great people. I stay en-US at fantastic resorts and get to share with you en-US my fun. I have witnessed golf history while en-US looking for stories for this column. I en-US witnessed first-hand John Daly taking 18 en-US strokes to play the par-5 sixth hole at Bay en-US Hill. To this day it is the PGA Tour record en-US for most shots taken on a hole.en-US I have been able to meet many of the men en-US I grew up watching and admiring as golfers en-US and course designers. Twenty years ago I en-US would have never guessed that Id have a en-US sit-down chat with Arnold Palmer, or Jack en-US Nicklaus, or Pete Dye. en-USIn these past 15 years, en-US my oldest daughter has graduated from en-US college, my youngest daughter is a year en-US from heading off to college, and my son has en-US his own career and has given me a granden-US -en-US son.en-US The blessings that this job has given me en-US over the past two decades are some that I en-US would never trade for anything. en-US Happy Anniversary Hometown News. en-US Heres to many, many more. en-USTen-USen years ago I walked into the en-US Hometown News office on U.S. 1 in en-US Fort Pierce and asked if there were en-US any openings in the editorial department. As en-US is turned out, there was soon to be an en-US opening for news clerk. I interviewed for the en-US job with the then Editor-In-Chief and en-US Managing Editor of the Treasure Coast en-US papers. I was called back for a second en-US interview, this time with the Publisher. To en-US say I was nervous would be an understateen-US -en-US ment. I was a semester from finishing my en-US Bachelors in English and had only taken one en-US class that had anything to do with newspaen-US -en-US pers. I had no experience, but they took a en-US chance on me. I was taught how to copy edit. en-US AP Style was drilled into my brain. From en-US obituaries to calendars to Rants and Raves, en-US there was never a dull moment.en-US I remember the first story I ever wrote for en-US the paper. About six months into my en-US position as News Clerk, a man by the name en-US of Matt Gregory was walking from Washingen-US -en-US ton to Key West to raise money for cancer en-US research and as he made his way down U.S. en-US 1, he stopped in and asked if anyone there en-US wanted to write a story about him. I was the en-US only member of the editorial staff in the en-US office at the time, so after a quick conversaen-US -en-US tion with my editor, I was told to ask Mr. en-US Gregory some questions, take his picture and en-US write about him. What an experience. It was en-US published in the following weeks paper and I en-US think that was a defining moment in my en-US experience at Hometown News. Ten years en-US after I started as news clerk for Martin and en-US St. Lucie counties, Im fortunate to have en-US grown with the company and am now Editor en-US of the five southern papers. en-US Weve seen many changes throughout the en-US years. Were in a different office and there are en-US lots of new faces. We have new software that en-US makes the production of the paper a lot en-US easier. We have expanded from two papers in en-US the south to 15 papers north to Volusia en-USCounty. But, even though there are so many en-US new things at Hometown News, the journey en-US and message are the same. We care about the en-US communities that we are a part of. We en-US maintain that there is good news out there en-US and we do our best to bring that to the en-US readers every week. We are proud to be en-US standing strong after 15 years and cant wait en-USto see what takes place in the next 15. O en-USver the course of a decade, Ive seen en-US many changes throughout the en-US Hometown News and the industry en-US as a whole. The one thing that hasnt en-US changed is the undeniable dedication and en-US loyalty to the news and information we en-US consistently put out to the public. While it en-US can be stressful at times, Im proud to work en-US for and with a company that takes such en-US pride in its product. en-US Heres to another 15 exciting years!en-US en-USMen-USy name is Kathy Young and I en-US started with Hometown News in en-US February 2005 (in my 13th year).en-US I found my job with the Hometown en-US News after moving to Vero Beach from en-US Washington state. I was looking for en-US employment and looked in the Vero Beach en-US Hometown News and I saw an ad looking en-US for an outside sales representative. I en-US applied and started as a Bench Rep en-US (assisted the Outsides Sales Consultants). en-US After three months, I was given the en-US Sebastian territory as an Outside Sales en-US Consultant which I enjoyed so much, en-US especially with the business relationships I en-US was able to form with the wonderful local en-US business owners and staff that advertised en-US with me.en-US Two and a half years later I was offered en-US a territory in Vero Beach and once again en-US formed so many wonderful business en-US relationships with Vero Beach business en-US owners!en-US The company then made me a team en-US leader and months later I became the en-US Sales Manager for the Vero Beach team.en-US In March of 2013 I was offered the en-US position of Major/National Accounts en-US Manager, which I love! We were en-US essentially starting with nothing but a small en-US office and a team of 22 dedicated people en-US who wanted to make the dream come true. en-US The slogan for the paper was Your Local en-US News and Information Source, and the en-US plan was to launch the Martin County and en-US St. Lucie County editions on Friday, June en-US 14, 2002. The dream then became a reality en-US and has grown bigger than we ever could en-US have imagined!en-US Within the first 15 years, I saw the en-US company grow from two editions to 15. We en-US now cover Martin County through Volusia en-US County every week with well over 225,000 en-US in circulation. en-US I was hired to sell classified commercial en-US advertising (inside sales) and I can still en-US vividly remember my very first customer, en-US Academies of Cosmetology in Fort Pierce. I en-US am happy and proud to say that after 15 en-US years, they are still one of my best and en-US favorite customers. I think being personal en-US with your customers allows you to service en-US them in a way that is best for both them and en-US their business. en-US After years of selling classified and en-US surviving two hurricanes and a recession, I en-US saw an opportunity to expand into a en-US completely different field of publishing legal en-US notices. So I approached management to en-US get the Ok and started a whole new en-US addition to the classified department that is en-US very successful right to present day. I will en-US say that while many businesses did not en-US survive that tough period, our dedicated en-US team allowed the Hometown News to get en-US through the hurdles and be more successful en-US today than ever.en-US As the only remaining member of the en-US original group that started Hometown en-US News, I am proud to be a team member of en-US this great company. I now am partially en-US retired but I still work three days a week en-US and I love the people I work with. I really en-US believe that if you want to stay happily en-US married.en-US The last time we went together it was like en-US going to the dentist to have a tooth pulled, en-US except my dentist is less painful and en-US aggravating, so you could understand my en-US apprehension when she asked to go. en-US Then she shocked me with these words, en-US I want to cook dinner tonight. I couldnt en-US believe my ears! en-US You have to understand something. I do en-US all the cooking in our household and my en-US wife takes care of the family, but no en-US cooking. I should have known something en-US was up, but I was so excited that I agreed. en-US Was I in for a big surprise! en-US I took her to one of my favorite groceries en-US where I knew everyone and introduce her en-US as my wife. You see no one had ever see her en-US before. My curiosity grew as well as my en-US excitement to see what meal she would en-US prepare. en-US We stopped by the cheese section, where en-US she chose a nice aged Gouda. Things were en-US looking good. Then we stopped at the en-US wines and she found a Chateau St Jean en-US California Pinot Noir 2012. Wow that is a en-US classic great wine and not too pricey. My en-US heart was beating fast, the anticipation was en-US killing me. en-US What was she going to prepare? Steak au en-US poivre, lamb chops, duck breast? We visited en-US the fresh produce department and she en-US asked me to pick out a few Heirloom en-US tomatoes. Things were getting better and en-US better by the minute. She then led me to the en-US deli counter, which was a surprise to me en-US that she even knew where it was. Maybe she en-US needed some prosciutto or capicola to go en-US with those wonderful tomatoes? en-US Thats when reality hit. She ordered the en-US rotisserie chicken special with two sides. I en-US didnt say a word and just headed to the en-US checkout lane. While waiting for the en-US cashier to tabulate the bill, she looked at my en-US basket and said, Is your wife cooking en-US tonight? I mumbled something under my en-US breath and headed to the car and then en-US home. en-US When we entered the house my wife said, en-US Please cut the tomatoes and cheese and en-US season them like you do, and also cut the en-US chicken and arrange it on a serving plate. en-US She opened the wine, sat down and waited en-US for me to bring the food to the table. I guess en-US I shouldnt complain; I didnt have to cook en-US the chicken. Here is one of the recipes I was en-US hoping for en-USCHEF COSTAS LEMON en-US GARLIC CHICKENen-USYield: 4 servingsen-US Ingredientsen-US Chicken cut into 8 parts en-US 6 ounces butter, melteden-US 2 ounces olive oilen-US 2 garlic cloves en-US 2 teaspoons oregano en-US 2 cups chicken stocken-US 1 fresh lemonen-US 2 baking potatoesen-US 1 cup red onion, sliceden-US 1 cup celery sticksen-US Directionsen-US Place celery and onions on the bottom of en-US a shallow roasting pan and pour chicken en-US stock over vegetables. Place chicken parts and potatoes en-US on top of the celery and onions in the en-US shallow roasting pan. Season with lemon en-US juice, salt and pepper. Sprinkle garlic and en-US oregano over all the chicken and potatoes. en-US Cook at 350 degrees for 30-45 minutes en-US until the chicken is golden brown and en-US potatoes are soft. (Half way through the en-US cooking process, using a spoon, baste the en-US chicken and continue to cook.)en-US I like using a whole chicken cut into 8 en-US pieces (leg, thigh, wing, breast) for better en-US flavor.en-US Microwaving a fresh whole lemon for 10 en-US seconds will yield more juice.en-US Costa Magoulas is dean of the Mori en-US Hosseini College of Hospitality and Culinary en-US Management at Daytona State College. en-US Contact him at (386) 506-3578 or en-US CHEF COSTA'S en-USCOOKING CORNERen-USCOSTA MAGOULAS 7-10 p.m. For more information and updates, visit, JUNE 21 Benefit for Dallas Santa and family: 4-10 p.m., Big Apple Pizza and Pasta, Fort Pierce. These en-US interesting plants are extremely tough and en-US surprisingly easy to care for. These plants en-US do not require a lot of light and can grow in en-US many places where other plants will not en-US easily thrive such as in a bathroom. The en-US plant has only one basic need and that is en-US water. en-US The Lucky Bamboo is actually not a en-US bamboo at all. Its botanical name is known en-US as Dracaena Sanderana. It is also known as en-US the ribbon plant.en-US Many Feng Shui master recommend this en-US plant because the plant can create a space en-US where you feel energized and less stressed. I en-US personally have one in every room and it is en-US one of my most favorite plants. I have them en-US in several locations, one on the porch, en-US another in the kitchen and yet another in en-US my office. They do well in almost any en-US lighting condition. When I feel stressed out en-US from a hard day, I often just look at the en-US plant and think and it almost always gives en-US me a feeling of comfort.en-US You can purchase Lucy Bamboo in a en-US couple of different ways. Sometimes you en-US can find them already potted in all flavors en-US of decorative pots. You can also purchase en-US them loose and buy your own vase or pot. If en-US you use a vase to display your plant, simply en-US keep the roots covered with water. If you en-US choose to plant them in a small pot, buy en-US some small stones or even marbles to place en-US around the plant to give it stability. The en-US rocks also give the plant a nice decorator en-US look.en-US Taking care of Lucky Bamboo is very en-US simple and worry free. All you need is to en-US keep the plant in clean water. It is a good en-US idea to change the water once a week or so. en-US If you have city water, let the water stand en-US for 24 hours before putting the plant in it so en-US the chlorine has a chance to dissipate. en-US Better yet, use distilled water. If you have a en-US well, the water is perfectly safe as is. You en-US can add a diluted water-soluble houseplant en-US fertilizer but it is not necessary.en-US Not only can these plants bring joy to en-US yourself but they also bring good cheer to en-US others in the form of gifts. You can create en-US your own themes for any occasion simply en-US by using the appropriate container. You can en-US then add ribbons, picks or any other type of en-US small object to create something truly en-US special that will be cherished for time to en-US come.en-US This weeks garden tip:en-US With the additional rainfall we have en-US been receiving the past few days, our en-US gardens will begin to flourish and grow in en-US leaps and bounds. With all the rain many of en-US us are going to want to fertilize our plants. en-US It is important to remember that during the en-US summer months, you should not use any en-US commercial fertilizers. This is to keep the en-US nitrates out of the groundwater so it does en-US not pollute the rivers and streams and cause en-US algae blooms. en-US There are many natural ways to fertilize en-US such as using natural cow manure. You can en-US also create your own compost pile or even en-US use banana peels as a fertilizer option. en-US Believe it or not, dry pet food can be used en-US for fertilizer. Placing the food in flower beds en-US and allowing it to decay actually benefits en-US the soil. The only small problem you might en-US have are raccoons stealing the food before it en-US begins to disintegrate in the soil. en-US Grass clippings can make a great en-US fertilizer tea in just a couple of days. en-US Simply add some water to a bucket of grass en-US clippings and let the mixture steep a en-US couple of days before using. Once ready, en-US add about 10 cups of water to one cup of en-US grass tea and apply to your plants like en-US liquid fertilizer. en-US Not only can these alternate fertilizing en-US techniques help during the summer months en-US of Florida, they can help year round by en-US keeping dangerous chemicals out of our en-US water supply. en-US Joe Zelenak has more than 30 years en-US experience in gardening and landscape.
