The First Step Program was en-US created by Big Apple Pizza owner Scott Van Duzer, en-US along with former St. Lucie county commissioner en-US Kim Johnson and State Representative Larry Lee, en-US Jr., and it is a way for local officials to spend time en-US interacting with youth in St. Lucie County and en-US Fort Pierce.en-US The group gets together with dozens of youngen-US -en-US sters from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays at what en-US has become known as First Step Park in Fort en-US Pierce, located at 33rd Street and Avenue G. en-US Oftentimes, the children get a chance to interact en-US with everybody from city officials to law enforceen-US -en-US ment professionals from the St. Lucie County en-US Sheriffs Office and Fort Pierce Police Department en-US and they play football or basketball with the en-US youths. They also do arts and crafts and coloring en-US or play kickball.en-US With LEOs there, it also lets residents know that en-US for an hour or so their children will be safe while en-US outside playing. en-US The group also provides pizza and drinks to en-US attendees and they also talk for about 20 minutes en-US about issues related to them. Among many people en-US who have participated in the weekly events are the en-US Indian River State College baseball team and proen-US -en-US fessional football players like Michael Thomas. en-US FPPD Public Information Officer Ed Cunningen-US-en-USProgram helping en-US community, policeBy Gaylon Parkergparker@hometownnewsol.com en-USFORT PIERCE -The City Commisen-US -en-US sion plans to legalize up to six backyard en-US chickens per household in order to stem en-US a tide of homeless hens roaming the en-US streets. en-US Code Compliance Manager Peggy en-US Arraiz told commissioners during their en-US Conference Agenda May 8 that she had en-US studied the backyard chicken ordinances en-US of other South Florida communities in en-US order to come up with a solution to the en-US problem. Currently backyard chickens en-US are illegal, so people who own them simen-US -en-US ply let them forage freely through the en-US neighborhood. Ms. Arraiz hopes to en-US amend a current ordinance providing a en-US special exception for farm animals in the en-US city limits to also permit hens. She en-US attempted to allay any fears of residents en-US having to deal with early morning wakeen-US -en-US up calls as a result.en-US In the proposal, which is similar to en-US every jurisdiction that I checked, its en-US hens only -no roosters, she said. en-US Roosters are banned in every jurisdicen-US -en-US tion that I spoke to because theyre the en-US noise makers.en-US Several restrictions would also keep en-US Fort Pierce from being inundated with en-US legalized fowl.en-US It would only be allowed at single en-US family residences, she explained. For en-US duplexes, triplexes or other multifamily en-US homes, it would be determined case by en-US case because there are some duplexes en-US with big yards where you would be able en-US to meet the requirements. The keeping en-US of ducks, geese, turkeys, peafowl pigeons en-US and other poultry is prohibited, so were en-US really restricting this to backyard chicken-US -en-US ens only.en-US For questions beyond her level of en-US expertise, Ms. Arraiz deferred to Fort en-USCity en-US wants en-US to corral en-US chickensen-USCity to legalize en-US backyard hens to en-US get homeless fowl en-US off the streeten-USBy Donald Rodrigueen-USFor Hometown News Sevin Bullwinkle/staff photographer en-USThe St. Lucie County 4H Club hosted Wags and Water Park at the Indian Hills en-US Stormwater Treatment and Recreational Area in Fort Pierce on Saturday, May en-US 13. Serving the Treasure Coast Since 1987 Looking for answers is simple with drop-down menu en-USMen-USost of the time, when I get calls en-US for computer help I can en-US usually figure out how to fix en-US things out instinctively. Why? Well en-US because I examine the contents of the en-US different menus looking for the option en-US that will most likely get me closer to my en-US goal (while keeping in mind whatever it en-US is Im trying to do). en-US As an added bonus, just about every en-US program out there that has pull down en-US menus have Help listed as the last one en-US to the right. So by the time I get to the en-US last pull down menu I can always open en-US that programs help file and do a search en-US on what Im trying to do. The help file en-US will then list all the topics that contain en-US whatever words I searched on and from en-US there I can usually figure out how to en-US take the next step.en-US Lets take a look at this in an example. en-US Lets say Im writing my column with a en-US typical word processing program and I en-US wanted to make the next line that I type en-US bold and larger. Lets also say that I only en-US have a very basic understanding of en-US computers. At this point I have two en-US choices, I can stare at the screen with a en-US blank expression and then call Bob en-US (whos pretty good with computers) and en-US ask him or, I can start looking around en-US the screen for something that may help en-US me reach my goal.en-US As I move my mouse (and my eyes!) en-US around the screen I notice a couple of en-US things; first at the top of the screen, en-US above where the words are being typed, en-US there are (often) rows of menus and en-US buttons available. And, as I move my en-US mouse slowly over the buttons, little en-US boxes pop up telling me what each en-US button does. When I click on the File en-US option it opens (or pulls down) and I en-US can see all of the commands that are en-US available that have to do with Filing. As en-US I move my mouse to the right, the File en-US pull down menu closes and the Edit en-US menu opens displaying all of the en-US commands available for editing. Next en-US the View pull down menu opens and en-US then the Insert menu opens. As each en-US menu opens I look at all the options en-US available and for each one I ask myself en-US does this option look like it will help en-US me change my text to bold and larger? en-US And as each menu does not present an en-US option I go on to the next one eventually en-US getting to the Format pull down en-US menu.en-US When Format opens, I see it lists en-US Bullets and numbering Borders and en-US shading and whats this? Font?? en-US Hmmm. Let me think Im trying to en-US change the formatting of en-US my text and text is made en-US up of fonts, Thinking I en-US may be on the right en-US track, I click the Fonts en-US option and a screen en-US opens that allows me to en-US change the characterisen-US -en-US tics of the type. Bingo! en-US Exactly what I am en-US looking for! It says I am en-US typing in Times New en-US Roman, Regular, Size en-US 12. I change the specs to en-US Times New Roman, en-US Bold, Size 14, click OK en-US and my typing is now en-US larger and darker. en-US OK, so, that rather tame demonstraen-US -en-US tion is just an example of how intuitive en-US computing works; at no time did I ever en-US get the urge to go get a book or call tech en-US support for help, I kept in mind what I en-US was trying to do and, after seeing what en-US options were available, discovered the en-US answer on my own. Instinctively.en-US Now, I know what a lot of you are en-US thinking; that the things you have en-US trouble doing are far more complex than en-US just changing the characteristics of text, en-US how can this possibly help me? And to en-US that I answer the lesson is not in how to en-US change the font size, the lesson is where en-US to go for your answers! en-US Notice that the menus I looked at en-US were all within the program I was using. en-US You should look at the menus and en-US options available within the program en-US where you are stuck. Also notice that en-US each pull down menu is a category; all en-US filing options are under File and we en-US found our Font options under the en-US Format pull down menu. That was no en-US coincidence. I would have been very en-US surprised to find the Fonts option under en-US the File pull down menu but starting at en-US File and moving to the right covers all en-US the bases and rapidly gets you familiar en-US with all the menus available.en-US Sean McCarthy fixes computers. en-US 4 en-USST. LUCIE COUNTY With the en-US potential for increased freight coming en-US through the Treasure Coast connected to en-US All Aboard Florida, area fire departments en-US recently trained for emergencies. The en-US departments and districts in conjunction en-US with Florida East Coast Railway were en-US taught about different hazardous materials en-US and the cars they are contained in, and en-US learned how each one is contained in the en-US event of a railway accident.en-US Florida East Coast Railway coordinated en-US the training with CSX Railway, and the en-US latter offered the use of a Tank Car Safety en-US Train during the classes from May 9 to 11 en-US at the St. Lucie County Fire Districts site in en-US Fort Pierce. The class included representaen-US -en-US tives from the Martin County Fire District en-US and the Stuart Fire Department.en-US The training was excellent, it was very en-US informative and the guys were getting a lot en-US of hands-on experience, said SLCFD en-US Division Chief Jennifer Chambers. The en-US goal of the training was to basically give our en-US guys a familiarization with how the trains en-US operate and where the shut-offs are, so we en-US got a chance to interact with subject matter en-US and experts regarding the trains and that en-US was fantastic.en-US en-US One of the items the firefighters were en-US educated on is the fact that liquified natural en-US gas has become the preferred fuel source for en-US trains traveling through the area, and the en-US training was designed to prepare and equip en-US the first responders with techniques to deal en-US with an LNG incident should one occur. en-US Fifteen of the FECRs trains are powered en-US with LNG instead of diesel fuel, so the en-US firefighters were given full instruction on en-US that. en-US Also, hazardous materials training and en-US tank car familiarization including LNG en-US was available for first responders, who were en-US guided through the various procedures to en-US contain a leak if necessary.en-US There also is an electrical hazard with en-US locomotives, Chief Chambers said, and the en-US firefighters reviewed that information and en-US she added that the personnel were able to en-US climb onto and around the tank cars to en-US experience first-hand how they are en-US designed. They showed us where the en-US valves and shut-offs for the fuel, the en-US hand-brakes and the hazardous materials en-US and all that type of familiarization about en-US how the rail cars are configured and built, en-US she said.en-US The districts and departments sent about en-US 90 firefighters to the training each day, and en-US the SLCFD sent about 75 to 80 participants en-US each day, with Stuart Fire Rescue and en-US Martin County Fire Rescue comprising the en-US remaining firefighters. The SLCFD also sent en-US two of their trucks and special operations en-US vehicles.en-US With us having this type of relationship en-US with the railroad and them coming in and en-US working with us, it should make communien-US -en-US ties feel better about the rail coming en-US through and our ability to handle any en-US incident that might come up, Chief en-US Chambers said. In fact, what they are doing is en-US getting people to PAY for the right to en-US babysit their home. en-US The reason I say home is because they en-US declare the house as their homestead, their en-US home. To RENT out a homestead is illegal, en-US you say? Well yes, it is, so be very careful en-US because you are dealing with underhanded en-US criminals. Make sure that you video tape the en-US home and have the homeowner walk around en-US the house, and the grounds, pointing out en-US any indiscretions. If there are far too many en-US cheap & worn out objects in the house, have en-US the homeowner state that in your video, too. en-US If you see something you think should be en-US pointed out but they refuse to, make sure en-US you do it while youre filming. I would also en-US do a 2nd video (perhaps via another person, en-US not you) the very first moment you take en-US possession of the house and at the en-US MOMENT you are opening the door.en-US If you dont do this, you will be sorry. en-US There are people in this town who do this en-US year after year and they use the money that en-US they save by not fully paying taxes and by en-US keeping peoples deposits to supplement en-US their carefree lifestyleas though collecting en-US unemployment werent enough. Not every person in need of en-US rehab is going to initially jump at the en-US chance to get clean and handle the issues en-US that drove them to addiction. While some en-US addicts or alcoholics have been so badly en-US beaten and battered by their lifestyle that en-US they grasp at the first opportunity to deal en-US with their problems, others need some en-US type of external help in order to seek help. en-US Interventions are extremely helpful tools en-US for families who are dealing with a loved en-US one who is completely against getting help en-US and resistant to going to treatment.en-US Some families believe if an addict or en-US alcoholic isnt willing to get help and go to en-US drug rehab on their own, they arent going en-US to force them to go and certainly wont en-US waste their money. Heres an interesting en-US fact: if some addicts or alcoholics believe en-US they can continue to drink alcohol or use en-US drugs successfully, without any type of en-US consequences for their behavior, they will en-US continue to do so because the problems en-US caused by their addiction is still less than en-US the power of the addiction over them.en-US There are 2 types of interventions; one en-US where the family sits down with the addict en-US and has a professional interventionist conen-US -en-US duct a family intervention, where the en-US addict is confronted and offered drug en-US rehab. If they choose not to attend drug en-US rehab, the family gives the addict conseen-US-en-US quences for their choice. The other type of en-USintervention is done by an interventionist en-US and conducted on a one-on-one basis, en-US where the interventionist works with the en-US addict alone to get their agreement to go to en-US treatment. Once the interventionist, in en-US either case, gets the addict to choose help, en-US they will escort them to the treatment cenen-US -en-US ter the family has picked out and gets them en-US successfully checked in. en-US Often, interventionists can be more sucen-US-en-US cessful in handling the addict than the en-US family since, in many cases, the intervenen-US -en-US tionist is an ex-addict himself. By having en-US gone through addiction, the interventionen-US -en-US ist can level with the addict, speak from en-US their reality and truly understand and have en-US empathy for what they are going through. en-US The interventionist is also a neutral party en-US and not heavily emotionally involved in en-US the situation like the family is. Intervenen-US-en-US tions can help an addict make a logical en-US choice for themselves when they might not en-US be able to alone. If an addict is struggling en-US with addiction, but refuses help, intervenen-US -en-US tions can be a powerful tool used to save en-US their life. en-US For more information on interventions, en-US go to http://www.narconon-suncoast.org/en-US blog/the-power-of-an-intervention.html en-US If you are in need of areferral to a treaten-US -en-US ment center, call us at1877-841-5509en-USLetter to the editor Photo courtesy of BML Public Relations en-USMembers of the St. Lucie County Sheriffs Office and the Fort en-US Pierce Police Department prepare for their April 21 shift as celeben-US -en-US rity waiters during a Tip-A-Cop fundraiser at the Fort Pierce Appleen-US -en-US bees to benefit the Special Olympics of Florida. en-US 10 en-USJupiter is light years away from the resten-USTen-UShis northern enclave of Palm Beach en-US County never ceases to offer new en-US surprises. From wildlife rehabilitaen-US -en-US tion to Major League spring training games, en-US Jupiter packs a surprising variety of en-US activities into a relatively small city. During en-US our last visit here, we discovered the en-US tropically delightful outdoor dining spot on en-US the Intracoastal known as Guanabanas. en-US This time we enjoyed a personalized tour of en-US the waterway with Captain Art Steffey of en-US PonTiki Boat Cruises. We departed from en-US the pier directly behind Guanabanas, and en-US Captain Steffey entertained my wife Gloria en-US and I with his South American adventures en-US as we leisurely motored around the en-US emerald-green waters of Jupiter Inlet and en-US took pictures of the historic Jupiter en-US Lighthouse. The small and comfortable en-US boats carry a maximum of six passengers en-US and are perfect for family outings and en-US intimate reunions. Unlike typical tour boats en-US with regularly scheduled sailings, PonTiki en-US offers private, custom cruises on a per-peren-US -en-US son basis, meaning customers can choose en-US the time of day that best suits them, even en-US during the middle of the night under a full en-US moon. All drinks are included, and the en-US unique vessels even feature waterslides so en-US passengers can slip right into the quiet en-US channels surrounding the inlet.en-USWe began our most recent stay here at the en-US Jupiter Beach Resort & Spa, a Four Diamond en-US hotel at the eastern terminus of Indiantown en-US Road in the center of all the area has to offer. en-US Here the celebratory mood begins at en-US check-in, when guests receive a complien-US -en-US mentary glass of champagne among the cozy en-US backdrop of the warm, wooden tones of the en-US lobby. Just downstairs lies the Opal Spa, en-US which offers a number of pampering services en-US to make your vacation even more relaxing. en-US Nestled between the lobby and the Atlantic is en-US an Olympic-size pool, waterfall hot tub and en-US the outdoor dining extension of our next en-US destination, Sinclairs Ocean Grill. The charm en-US continues with the open-air kitchen of the en-US establishment, where guests can observe the en-US savory dishes being crafted, such as the en-US tender Grilled Tenderloin sauteed with oyster en-US and shiitake mushrooms. Gloria opted for the en-US chefs fresh catch of the day, a sweet-potaen-US -en-US to-encrusted hog snapper that we both en-US wished would show up on the regular menu. en-US We started off our dinner with a fluted basket en-US of chewy homemade breads and homemade en-US soups, of which the Roasted Chicken en-US simmering in a savory broth of aromatic en-US vegetables and orecchiette pasta proved to be en-US particularly delightful. We shared a crunchy en-US crme brulee for dessert, accompanied by en-US cups of deliciously robust coffee.en-US After dinner, we took a five-minute drive en-US to Harbourside Place, Jupiters new defacto en-US downtown on the banks of the Intracoastal en-US Waterway. Here we strolled along a section of en-US Jupiters 2.5-mile Riverwalk, darted in a few en-US of the shops that were open and spent a few en-US relaxing moments sitting in Adirondack en-US chairs and listening to live music at the en-US beautiful Harbourside Place Amphitheater.en-US Upon return to the resort, we discovered en-US that the electric motor had unexpectedly died en-US on the door to our comfortable king room, en-US which led to an unexpected surprise. When en-US the helpful staff were forced to dismantle the en-US door to get our room back open, the manager en-US decided to relocate us to a two-bedroom en-US penthouse suite that appeared to be larger en-US than our Port St. Lucie home. Although we en-US were only there for the night, we found this en-US accommodation with a huge separate living/en-US dining area to be perfect for pre-wedding en-US parties and family groups traveling together.en-US The next morning we took a short walk en-US south along the gorgeous beach to a small en-US outcropping of Anastasia limestone formaen-US -en-US tions similar to those at the nearby Blowing en-US Rocks Preserve in Martin County, where we en-US sat for a few minutes enjoying the spectacular en-US interplay of tides and stone. en-US For breakfast, we headed over to one of en-US Jupiters most popular morning spots, the en-US Royal Caf, in the Concourse Village en-US Shopping Center, where it appeared that en-US almost everyone knew everyones name. This en-US old-style coffee shop still features bar-stool en-US seating and award-winning omelets (the en-US Spanish Omelet was truly delicious!). en-US We finished our morning at one of our en-US favorite Jupiter destinations (and one of the en-US citys most picturesque spots), the Busch en-US Wildlife Sanctuary. One of the closest animal en-US refuges to the Treasure Coast, the Sanctuary en-US takes in more than 5,000 injured and en-US orphaned animals annually and boasts en-US permanent exhibits of everything from en-US Florida Panthers to crocodiles, bears and en-US several species of owls in the aviary section. en-US The boardwalk area leading through the en-US cypress wetlands is particularly stunning. en-US Youll also find the Loggerhead Marinelife en-US Center just to the south in nearby Juno en-US Beach. This 12,000-square-foot facility is en-US dedicated to the preservation of sea turtles, en-US and you can actually sign up for a nighttime en-US tour to watch one lay her eggs.en-US We lunched that afternoon at Calaveras en-US Cantina in Harbourside Place. This unique en-US Mexican restaurant is decorated by playful en-US skeleton murals and even some unique en-US chandeliers embossed with images of en-US skeletons imported directly from Mexico. en-US Calaveras sets itself apart with its own unique en-US creations, beginning with its homemade en-US tortilla chips seasoned with a special en-US copyrighted blend of more than 30 spices and en-USserved with either smooth or chunky salsas en-US (both were yummy). The restaurant also en-US makes and bottles its own ancho chipotle en-US sauce (A creamy blend of medium-heat en-US smoky chipotle and mild, sweet ancho chili en-US peppers), which I found delicious on en-US everything). While Gloria enjoyed the en-US Carnitas (roast pork), I ordered the Brisket en-US Quesadillas, a delicious combination of en-US tender beef, Chihuahua/cotija cheese, onions, en-US peppers and mushrooms. To top off our meal, en-US we ordered the most unique dessert on the en-US menu: Cinnamon Corn Ice Cream topped en-US with candied pecans and chocolate sauce.en-US While in Jupiter this trip, we enjoyed a en-US performance of Westside Story at the en-US award-winning Maltz Jupiter Theatre, just a en-US stones throw from our hotel. We have always en-US found the productions at this venue to be paren-US -en-US ticularly fascinating.en-US Before heading home that evening, we en-US drove just south of the Jupiter Beach Resort en-US along A1A until we passed Carlin Park, a en-US huge facility that offers everything from en-US volleyball and tennis courts, a baseball field en-US and even bocce ball. Guests can reserve a en-US number of beachside pavilions, as well as en-US enjoy live music and other events at the en-US Seabreeze Amphitheater. Theres free en-US on-street parking and a broad sidewalk here en-US perfect for strolling or bicycling.en-US Jupiter lies about 40 minutes south of the en-US heart of the Treasure Coast via I-95 or the en-US Florida Turnpike.en-US Weekend Wanderer is written by Donald en-US Rodrigue. Prior to moving to the Treasure en-US Coast in 2007, Mr. Rodrigue worked for a en-US custom-publishing division of the Miami en-US Herald and wrote travel articles on destinaen-US -en-US tions up and down the western hemisphere.en-US WEEKEND WANDERER en-USDONALD RODRIGUE en-USPierce Planning Director Peggy Grohall, en-US who she referred to as a chicken guru. The en-US latter, a resident of unincorporated St. Lucie en-US County, has five chickens of her own and en-US refers ten-USo them as pets. Commissioner en-US Rufus Alexander posed just such a question en-US after Ms. Arraiz said city residents would en-US be able to use the chickens for both eggs en-US and a food source, and the room soon cacken-US -en-US led with laughter.en-US How can you get an egg without a roosten-US -en-US er? he asked naively. en-US Chickens lay eggs all the time, Ms. Groen-US -en-US hall responded. If you have a rooster, then en-US the egg makes a baby chicken; otherwise, en-US its just an egg.en-US Mayor Linda Hudson then chimed in.en-US Im so glad you asked that question en-US because I wanted to know myself, she said. en-US Both Commissioner Alexander and en-US Commissioner Jeremiah Johnson wanted en-US to know the specific requirements for housen-US -en-US ing the hens. en-US They cannot exceed six feet in height, en-US Ms. Arraiz explained. The enclosures have en-US to be cleaned, and they cannot be closer en-US than 10 feet from any property line nor en-US within 25 feet of an adjacent residential en-US structure.en-US Commissioner Johnson worried the en-US coops could still end up being too large for en-US the property and wanted maximum sizes en-US codified in the amendment. en-US I just dont want a 10 X 60 coop in the en-US backyard for six birds, he said. en-US Ms. Arraiz emphasized that Stuart en-US required a minimum of four square feet en-US per bird, and agreed that 10 square feet per en-US hen could be used as the maximum size. en-US What Im hearing is put in a requireen-US-en-US ment of a minimum of four square feet per en-US chicken and with a maximum of 10, she en-US said. en-US The city will also have the right to conen-US -en-US trol how many chickens ultimately end up en-US flocking together in a neighborhood due to en-US the use of the special exemption permit.en-US This isnt going to be a right, she said. en-US You actually have to apply to keep the en-US chickens, which would require someone to en-US actually go out and inspect the property en-US and make sure that all of these conditions en-US can be met.en-US Although the Code Enforcement en-US Department created the amendment to en-US ease the citys problems with free-roaming en-US chickens, it will not affect other roaming en-US species such as ducks, geese, turkeys and en-US the citys beloved peacocks. Commissioner en-US Alexander wondered if the city could face en-US any legal challenges by strictly singling out en-US the homeless chickens for incarceration en-US and posed the question to City Attorney en-US James Messer. The latter said he was no fan en-US of the foraging fowl but loved the peacocks.en-US Thats a good question, he said. It en-US would seem that the free roaming peacocks en-US have to go somewhere for food and water. I en-US guess what the ordinance reads is, the en-US ducks, geese and peacocks can roam at en-US large, but the chickens have to be kept in a en-US chicken coop. The animals unfortunately en-US dont have constitutional rights, so theres en-US really no legal effect.en-US Since the chickens may be considered a en-US food source for those who keep them, both en-US Ms. Grohall and Ms. Arraiz had to come up en-US with restrictions on their potential slaughen-US-en-US ter to avoid repeating an undesirable situaen-US-en-US tion in the past.en-US We actually had someone who hung en-US them from her clothesline, and the neighen-US -en-US bors were not happy with that, the latter en-US said. So we said if this is what youre going en-US to do, dont do it where the neighbors are en-US going to watch you slaughter the chickens. en-US Do it in a place thats not visible. en-US Commissioner Thomas Perona believes en-US the city could rely on its sound ordinance en-US to control any problems with excessive en-US clucking. en-US They can be noisy from time to time, en-US he said. If it gets to be a nuisance, we have en-US sound ordinances that provide protection.en-US Ms. Grohall immediately cried foul over en-US the defamation of her hens. en-US The only time my chickens are loud is en-US when three of them are laying an egg at the en-US same time and for some reason they tend to en-US like high-five each other, she said as the en-US chamber burst into laughter. The rest of en-US the time theyre quiet. en-US All jokes aside, Mayor Hudson hopes the en-US ordinance amendment will help rid the city en-US of free-roaming hens, who Ms. Arraiz said en-US still have a bounty on their headsen-US Were trying to deal with a situation en-US where some people want chickens, the en-US mayor said. Were trying to give them a en-US legal way to do it without disturbing their en-USneighbors or destroying the community. en-USChickensen-USFrom page 1

LUCIE COUNTYSt. Lucie Public en-US Schools have worked over the last year en-US fine-tuning a program to help students stay en-US focused even during the summer months. en-US Summer Slide was developed as a way to en-US encourage students to continue their educaen-US-en-US tions and not let all their hard work from en-US the previous year get lost in the shuffle. It en-US also has become a tool for teachers to help en-US youths along in their studies and hopefully en-US be ready to hit the ground running in the en-US fall.en-US We actually have several new resources en-US that were added from last year, said Jane en-US Whitaker, the SLPS Curriculum Coordinaen-US -en-US tor for the Office of Teaching and Leaning. en-US This is our second year in action and weve en-US added some new resources, especially into en-US the sixth-grade through 12th-grade and we en-US are excited about giving students some en-US exposure to some new technology and en-US online resources.en-US Last year, the SLPS offered the services en-US and augmented the program with various en-US Web-based resources for grades Pre-K en-US through 12 available for use by students, en-US parents and community organizations any en-US time and from any place. This year, the weben-US -en-US site has added college and career readiness en-US resources called Best Notes, which gives en-US students more access to book summaries en-US and literacy work. There is also new civics en-US and history components, such as a guide to en-US US Government and TED-Ed Lessons en-US withtopics on historic events from centuen-US-en-US ries ago to present day. The new science en-US resources for K to 5 includes Energy en-US Quest, which is an active encounter for the en-US students with interactive games.en-US It gets students thinking about scien-US -en-US ence-fair projects that will be coming up in en-US middle and high schools, Ms. Whitaker en-US said. It gives kids experiences to actually en-US look at different ideas and they can start a en-US the ground level and get prepared for those en-US and help give parents ideas, too.en-US Many students have a tendency to lose en-US some of the achievement gains they made en-US during the previous school year, but this en-US Internet resource allows students to en-US strengthen their skills and avoid learning en-US loss over the summer in Arts and Technoloen-US -en-US gy, English Language Arts, English Lanen-US-en-US guage Learners (ELL), Math, Science, Social en-US Studies and College Career Readiness, en-US according to a press release from SLPS.en-US The sections are broken down into four en-US different areas: resources for VPK, Kinderen-US -en-US garten to fifth-grade, sixth to eighth grade en-US and high school students. Ms. Whitaker en-USsaid officials were surprised at the number en-US of students who participated in last years en-US inaugural roll-out and that the numbers en-US were split similarly across the grade specen-US -en-US trum.en-US We were very pleased with the first year en-US and we were able to track the number of hits en-US we had on each site, she said. That gave us en-US feedback on what worked and what didnt. It en-US was pretty balanced; we thought we would en-US get more hits at the elementary level, but I en-US think a lot of our students are thinking en-US about ACT and SAT-prep.en-US For more information about the Summer en-US Slide program, please visit the www.stlucie.en-US k12.fl.us/seasonal/summer-slide/homepage en-US and look for the Summer Slide logo to en-US explore the VPK through grade 12 resources. en-US For more information visiten-US ,en-US www.stlucieen-US-en-US schools.orgen-US .en-USSchools add to Summer Slide programBy Gaylon Parkergparker@hometownnewsol.comen-USpaper at 10:30 a.m., Fort Pierce Branch en-US Library, 101 Melody Lane, Fort Pierce. en-US For en-US more information, call (772) 462-1615, en-US email en-US carranzaa@stlucieco.org en-US or visit en-US http://library.stlucieco.gov.en-US en-US 'Ladies Sing the Blues: Lauren en-US Mitchell, featuring Annie Mack:'en-US 8 p.m., en-US Black Box Theatre at Sunrise Theatre, 117 S. en-US Second Street, Fort Pierce. Pierce Looking for stories of great shots en-USAen-USs I watched the Players Championen-US -en-US ship unfold this past weekend, I was en-US thrilled with the number of en-US outstanding shots I witnessed. I saw a en-US couple of aces, an albatross, a near hole-out en-US from somewhere by the hospitality tents on en-US the 18th hole, and more.en-US Watching those great shots got me en-US thinking about some of my best shots as en-US well as some of the not-so-great ones.en-US One of the first great shots that I en-US remember from my past happened back in en-US high school. Playing at Melbourne Municien-US -en-US pal Golf Course, now Crane Creek Reserve, en-US I carded my first eagle on the par-4 second en-US hole. It was a 7-iron from about 150 yards en-US or so. I saw it take one bounce and disapen-US -en-US pear.en-US I was certain that it had gone over the en-US green, as I had hit a solid shot. I arrived at en-US the green and proceeded to look over the en-US green. It was no where to be seen. I then en-US back-tracked and looked in the hole. There en-US it was! I still have that golf ball.en-US Not every golfer has a hole-in-one on his en-US or her resume. I have played this game for en-US nearly 45 years and I am happy to say that I en-US have one ace. Sadly, I missed seeing it go in en-US the hole. I was playing with my son at en-US Sanctuary Ridge in Clermont. The sixth en-US hole is a shortish uphill par-3 with a bunker en-US guarding the front of the green. On that day en-US the pin was up front and the tees were a bit en-US forward. en-US I chose a pitching wedge and took my en-US swing. I wasnt quite sure it was struck well en-US enough, but when I saw it bounce on the en-US green instead of landing in the bunker, I en-US bent down to pick up my tee. It was then en-US that my son said, Oh, go in!. It did. By the en-US time I looked up the ball was no longer in en-US view and I swore that he was pulling my leg en-US and that the ball must have somehow gone en-US off the back of the green.en-US We got tho the green, and I checked the en-US hole. Sure enough, there it was. I was so en-US thrilled. My first, and thus far only, ace and en-US it came on a day with my son. I was sad that en-US I didnt actually see it go in, but it counts en-US either way.en-US My most pressure-packed shot came en-US when I attended the grand opening of en-US Harmony Golf Preserve on US 192 between en-US Melbourne and St. Cloud. The course was en-US designed by Johnny Miller and he was en-US on-hand for the day.en-US The previous evening we media and en-US other guests had attended a dinner and en-US party, and then stayed over-night at the en-US Hyatt Orlando Airport. The evening was en-US fantastic as we got to chat with Johnny in a en-US very relaxed atmosphere.en-US The day of the grand opening, Johnny en-US gave a clinic and afterward we hit the en-US course. Johnny spent the en-US day bouncing around the en-US course playing holes with en-US groups and answering en-US questions. The 15th hole is en-US a long dog-leg right par-5. en-US With no homes built at en-US that time, it was easy to cut en-US the corner and take a en-US shortcut. I hit a solid drive, en-US but still had 235 to the en-US green with water all down en-US the left side and guarding en-US the front of the green. I had en-US decided to lay up and en-US already had my 7-iron in en-US my hand. At that moment, Johnny drove up en-US and commented what a great drive this was en-US and asked who had hit it. He caught me en-US putting my iron back in my bag.en-US You were going to lay up? he asked.en-US Well, with you here now, I am certainly en-US not, I replied.en-US I pulled my 3-wood and, considering the en-US pressure, hit one of the better shots of my en-US life. The ball flew high and straight and en-US settled in the fridge just on the right side of en-US the green.en-US Thats a great shot, was Johnnys en-US comment as he gave me a high-five.en-US He then proceeded to tell us that he en-US would show us the way to play this shot. He en-US took out a 4-wood and hit a beautiful fade en-US out over the water that settled softly about en-US 15 feet from the hole. We all exchanged en-US high-fives and had to laugh that my shot en-US had been bettered.en-US Sadly, I have had more not-so-great shots en-US in my golf career than the ones I just en-US mentioned. However, I keep playing, en-US waiting for that next great shot. They do en-US come and some day they may make my en-US Best of list.en-US Id like to hear from you. Tell me about en-US your greatest shots, your most presen-US -en-US sure-filled shots, and more. Ill share them en-US here at a later date and we will all remember en-US why we love this crazy game.en-US Drop me an email at en-US stammergolf@yahoo.en-US comen-US Id love to hear about your moment of en-US greatness.en-US en-US James Stammer has been an avid golfer en-US and golf enthusiast for nearly 40 years. GOLF en-USJAMES STAMMER en-USThe series is intriguing because it opens en-US up the possibility for inner-city youth to en-US experience alternative sports in some en-US cases for the first time. And it is helpful en-US because the instructors are there to offer en-US tips and guidance along the way. Mr. Ottofaen-US -en-US ro said some of the kids take to the sport en-US right away, and as they progress he sees en-US them grow in ways different from being in en-US team sports.en-US For the kids in the at-risk community, it en-US is an amazing response by them, Mr. Ottoen-US -en-US faro said. These kids are growing up in en-US gang-related neighborhoods or high-crime en-US areas with drugs or violence and theyre en-US innocent kids who in some cases dont en-US have mentors or mentorship programs like en-US we provide.en-US First and foremost, the program tries to en-US provide a new outlet for them so that they en-US will not feel stuck in those neighborhoods en-US and they can get out, get some exercise and en-US release some energy.en-US The series was started in 2016 and they en-US work directly with the Boys & Girls Clubs en-US and routinely draw between 10 and 30 kids en-US to the events. en-US 14 en-USWen-USith summer on the horizon we en-US all want to get the most flower en-US for our money when the sun en-US beats down on the garden. One of my en-US favorites is a flower known as the Gazania en-US Daisy. These flowers burst with color and en-US do very well in a sunny location. They en-US thrive well in poor soils and they add a en-US splash of brilliant color to your summer en-US bedding. They flower most of the summer en-US and can last as long as October. I am using en-US them in a colorful flowerbed that I have in en-US front of my house. They open wide during en-US the day but the flowers close on dull or en-US rainy days. These flowers come in all colors en-US from yellow, pink red and orange. Many en-US flowers are multi colored and start with a en-US light shading on the outer edge and finish en-US with a dark color near the center. en-US Another interesting and colorful en-US summer plant is a small, colorful flower en-US called Purslane (Portulaca oleracea). This en-US common garden plant is actually considen-US -en-US ered a weed. Weed or not, they offer en-US beautiful color and do extremely well in en-US sandy soil and full sun. These brilliant en-US flowers open up wide during the bright en-US Florida sun and close up at night as though en-US to go to sleep. They can be easily en-US propagated by breaking off cuttings and en-US planting in soil and they also propagate en-US themselves from the seeds of spent flowers. en-US As an added fact, Purslane can also be en-US eaten either fresh or cooked and are said to en-US be extremely high in en-US Omega 3 fatty acids. en-US They can spread easily in en-US your garden and if not en-US controlled, they can en-US actually take over. I also en-US use these plants in my en-US front bedding area. They en-US look great around my en-US birdbath in fact; I am en-US looking out the window en-US admiring how colorful en-US they are right now! en-US I have one other en-US summer favorite, en-US Mexican Heather. These en-US plants boast colorful en-US lavender, purple or white en-US flowers. They do well in en-US both summer and winter. They do well in en-US full sun as well as partial shade and will en-US tolerate temperatures as low as 28 degrees. en-US Even if they freeze to the ground, there is a en-US chance they will grow back. They have en-US excellent heat tolerance but do best with en-US regular watering. They can grow to be 3 en-US feet tall but can be easily trimmed to fit en-US your needs. They can be propagated from en-US plant cuttings in the summer and they also en-US can be grown from seed. The most en-US common variety in retail stores is the en-US Allyson which has purple flowers. I also en-US use Heather in my bedding area. en-US The combination of the three flowers en-US makes a great contrast of color in a en-US flowerbed and you have the advantage of en-US using flowers that tolerate our intense heat. en-US You can also add some Dusty Miller to the en-US mix for a real treat. The silver-white en-US colored leaves can really add the flower mix en-US for a picture perfect garden! I will have en-US some pictures of my garden on my website, en-US hometowngarden.com,en-US if you care to see en-US how I did the arranging of the flowers.en-US Joe Zelenak has more than 30 years en-US experience in gardening and landscape. en-US 15 en-USWho does the cooking at home?en-USMen-USy wife and I were enjoying our en-US Saturday morning together, which en-US is a special time for us. en-US I make whatever she wants for breakfast en-US and it gives us time together away from en-US work and family responsibilities. We were en-US just sharing and enjoying each others en-US company when it happened! en-US She started reminiscing about the times en-US when we first started out with two small en-US children and another on the way and she en-US would cook for the family while I was en-US working long and crazy hours never home en-US to help. She reminisced how much she en-US missed cooking for the family. Thats when en-US I opened my big mouth! en-US If you want, you can start cooking for the en-US family again. Because of these en-US classes, many homemakers and parents en-US were given the opportunity to pursue en-US careers in business, food industry, textiles, en-US and hotel and restaurant management.en-US Today, these classes have evolved into en-US culinary academies, offered in most high en-US schools, opening the doors for students to en-US enter the hospitality industry.
