LUCIE COUNTY Both the St. en-US Lucie County Commission and the en-US Planning & Zoning Commission recenten-US -en-US ly voted to launch a new yacht building en-US enterprise near the airport and facilitate en-US the expansion of an established boat en-US manufacturer in Fort Pierce. en-US On April 20, the Planning & Zoning en-US Board unanimously recommended the en-US County Commission approve a condien-US -en-US tional use permit so the owners of Tattoo en-US Yachts could reopen a successful busien-US -en-US ness operated in Martin County for the en-US last couple of years until their lease ran en-US out. County Commissioners then took en-US up the matter May 2, voting 4-0 with en-US Commission Chairman Chris Dzaen-US -en-US dovsky absent to welcome the company en-US to St. Lucie County. en-US The president of the Economic Develen-US -en-US opment Council of St. Lucie County, en-US Pete Tesch, addressed the County Comen-US-en-US mission right before the vote, saying he en-US valued the cooperative effort that en-US brought yacht builders Paul and Laura en-US Sharp north from Martin County. The en-US EDC worked hand-in-hand with St. en-US Lucie County Business Navigator Peter en-US Jones to make the transition of Paul and en-US Laura Sharps business as smooth as posen-US -en-US sible so they can continue manufacturen-US -en-US ing sailboats and catamarans near the en-US Treasure Coast International Airport.en-US They are the epitome of very engaged en-US and resourceful business owners, Mr. en-US Tesch said. The business has been listed en-US and the owners are doing everything they can to en-US ensure that it remains a skating rink for kids to en-US enjoy, but they are worried that might not eventuen-US-en-US ally be in the cards.en-US One of the owners, Harry Stuart, said that the en-US business has been beset by a series of setbacks en-US throughout the years. The hurricanes of 2004 en-US Jeanne, Wilma and Frances all did major damen-US -en-US age to the property and that subsequent insurance en-US and legal battles, along with the 2008 recession, en-US have crippled their finances. But a change-of-en-US hands from Riverside Bank to TD Bank also has en-US hindered the process, Mr. Stuart said, because they en-US were not nearly as willing to work with Skatetown en-US to keep them afloat.en-US Everything was going along smoothly until the en-US hurricanes came along, Mr. Stuart said. Hurrien-US-en-US cane Frances wreaked havoc with us and we were en-US closed for about a month because it destroyed the en-US floor and tore off the canopy in front. The hurrien-US -en-US canes also did major damage to his home and he en-US used the same insurance company for both polien-US -en-US cies and he added their insurance adjuster did not en-US cover all the damages to his home or business, en-US thus resulting in the subsequent legal skirmishes.en-US They were going to give me nothing, and conen-US -en-US sequently we had to sue, which I was successful en-US at, Mr. Stuart said. Its ceren-US -en-US tainly emotional at some points, because its en-US hard to conceive. Aaron loved soccer so en-US much and he certainly touched so many en-US people in the ways he played on the field en-US and off the field in ways we didnt know en-US until the tragedy happened.en-US its not me who is doing this, its Aaron; en-US Im just the physical part who is trying to en-US inspire others to make a difference.en-US The event also allowed the athletes to see en-US each others cleats, Mr. Beauchamp said, and en-US thanked Rusticos in St. Lucie West for hosten-US -en-US ing the evenings event. It was hosted by Fort en-US Pierce Central Athletic Director Jay Stewart, en-US although Aaron always will play a central en-US role. The cleats come from the Nike Mercuen-US -en-US rial line of products, because they were Aaren-US -en-US ons favorites when he played soccer.en-US They got to select the cleats, and the colen-US -en-US ors and textures are wonderful, Mr. Beauen-US -en-US champ said. When Aaron was selecting his en-US cleats, he loved the pink ones and he always en-US selected the bright colors and he put his en-US insignia AB2 on the cleats. So what weve en-US done on every cleat that we give out is we en-US have continued to put his insignia on every en-US one we give out.en-US Mr. Beauchamp said the athletes were en-US thrilled to receive the cleats and even more en-US honored to be a part of The Aaron Project. en-US They were all so touched by being selected, en-US and the story behind The Aaron project. en-US There was an energy of emotion during en-US some parts of Jays talk about Aaron and en-US there were some members there who actualen-US -en-US ly knew Aaron, Mr. Beauchamp said.en-US He added that some of Aarons former en-US teammates were in attendance for the event. en-US On May 27, the organization will host the en-US fourth-annual Aaron Project Golf Tournaen-US-en-US ment to support scholarships for St. Lucie en-US County students and teachers in the areas of en-US the arts, academics and athletics. On and en-US Off Course Games will include best ball, en-US closest-to-pin, and the soccer punt hole in en-US honor of Aaron. People need to know the law en-US so this never happens. When you drive, you en-US drive on the right. When you walk you walk en-US on the left, facing traffic; that way you can en-US see them coming because they are no longer en-US behind you. This is very important law en-US these days because the hybrid/electric cars en-US make almost no noise!en-US While Im at it, when you ride your bicyen-US-en-US cle in the street, you ride on the right with en-US traffic. If you are going off the street and en-US into the crosswalk with your bicycle, you en-US walk your bicycle across the crosswalk, en-US hence the name crossWALK. If you ride en-US your bicycle in the crosswalk you are not en-US only breaking the law, you are shooting out en-US into oncoming cross traffic and will probaen-US -en-US bly get hit. When driving, this has happened en-US to me to many times to count, including en-US with skateboarders. Good thing I have good en-US reflexes when driving, but a lot of our senior en-US citizens do not. Walk everything in the en-US crosswalk. Know the law .....Stay alive. This en-US may be natures way of thinning out the en-US ignorant people from the gene pool.en-USA house with gremlins?en-USA couple weeks ago I bought a new sanden-US-en-US er and then I found out I already had a peren-US -en-US fectly good one and all I really needed was en-US some sanding pads that went with it. I en-US returned the new toy and used the old one a en-US few times, but then I put it away. So yesteren-US -en-US day I went to use it and low and behold I en-US cant find it. I love Florida but I hate getting en-US older, unless of course we have house gremen-US -en-US lins hiding my stuff when I dont pay attenen-US -en-US tion to when I actually put them away. So its en-US decided, Im going with House Gremlins. en-US Im not accepting the old age theory. Gotta en-US Love Retirement!en-USReinstall the traffic signsen-USThe new landscaping that Saint Lucie is en-US putting into the traffic circles in some areas en-US is very attractive. However, I wish they en-US would also reinstall the 15 mph traffic signs en-US near the circles that were at some of the ciren-US -en-US cle several years ago. So often cars and en-US trucks fly through these circles at 40 or 50 en-US mph. Hopefully the signs would encourage en-US drivers to slow down a little. When the en-US newlandscaping grows it may be a little en-US more difficult to see these fast moving vehien-US -en-US cles.en-USA message to dog ownersen-USIn response to I dont know youre there en-US where the person wants drivers to beep en-US their horn when they are behind the en-US dog being walked in the street. Why is anyen-US-en-US one walking their dog in the street? Dog en-US owners should keep their dogs on their own en-US property. Streets are for cars and vehicles, en-US not for dogs. Please, dog owners, respect the en-US rights of others.en-USThe walker is wrongen-USI am writing regarding a rant in the May en-US 5th issue about the motorist who dont blow en-US their horn to inform the walker they are en-US approaching from behind. If the walker en-US were walking on the left side of the road en-US which is the correct side there would not be en-US that problem. There would be no motorist en-US behind you. The en-US 11,000-square-foot rink is contained in an en-US 18,000-square-foot building and has so far en-US been an interesting prospect for potential en-US suiters. There have been a few inquiries en-US with interested parties, but not all of them en-US want the site to remain a skating rink.en-US The kids in this community are really en-US the reason why we do this, and the reason en-US we kept this place open even though it en-US wasnt making money is for the kids, en-US because theres not that much to do in Fort en-US Pierce for them, Mr. Stuart said. Someen-US -en-US body may buy it and keep it as a skating en-US rink, but I doubt it because its a very valuen-US -en-US able piece of commercial property, plus it en-US has a new roof.en-US All the difficulties have made it to en-US where if he cannot get an investor to buy it en-US and lease it back to him in that fashion, he en-US will simply have to sell the entire business. en-US Were still actively looking, and weve en-US had six phone calls to me and four talking en-US about buying it. So having a preferred manufacen-US-en-US turer that is an exporter in our community en-US is certainly desirable from an economic peren-US -en-US spective.en-US Last March, Mr. Tesch and Mr. Jones also en-US heralded the planned expansion of the Maven-US -en-US erick Boat Group, Inc. of Fort Pierce, which en-US builds fishing boats and employs nearly 300 en-US people. Mothers Day! The biggest en-US restaurant day of the year, when en-US almost half of the population eats out. en-US Except at my house -my wife would rather en-US have me cook for her. I dont blame her. I en-US can cook anything she wants anyway she en-US likes it. en-US We really have a great relationship. I do en-US all the cooking and food shopping and she en-US has a full-time job but takes care of all the en-US painting, plumbing, household finances, en-US children, doctor appointments, car repairs, en-US organizing trips, and most of all she is my en-US buffer at dinner parties or meetings. She is en-US the center of attention and I dont have to en-US make idle conversations. en-US Oh, did I forget to mention she also is a en-US nice person with a kind and giving heart. en-US We really enjoy each other's company and it en-US doesnt matter what we do as long as its en-US together. Does all this sound familiar? en-US Yes, Moms are special, their intense love en-US for family is legendary, but their ability to en-US nurture goes beyond words. From a en-US scratched knee to a broken heart, a word en-US from mom seems to heal all. So what can en-US we do on Mothers Day to honor her? en-US Flowers, candy and dinner its not en-US enough. Nothing is enough!en-US We can start by honoring her every day. en-US Make a breakfast on Saturday morning en-US sometimes. Just say thank you when she en-US does the laundry or tell her how nice the en-US meal was she cooked. Stop taking the en-US everyday things she does for granted and let en-US her know how much you appreciate it. You en-US will be surprised how much she will love it. en-US On Mothers Day, do something personen-US -en-US al: a hand written note, a scrapbook of en-US family photos, a special dinner with wine, en-US and do it yourself from your heart. That en-US will be something she deserves and will en-US remember forever. en-US So what should you cook? After spending just a few days en-US at this historic resort I must say that 80 en-US years later, the title is still in the Palm en-US Beaches.en-US Henry Flagler opened The Palm en-US Beach Inn, the original Breakers Hotel, in en-US 1897. A year later the Ocean Course, en-US believed to be Floridas first golf course, en-US opened for play. It wasnt until 1901, that en-US the resort would become The Breakers en-US thanks to savvy travelers requesting en-US rooms on the oceanfront down by the en-US breakers.en-US After being destroyed by fire in 1903, en-US Flagler vowed to rebuild and reopen the en-US resort by the winter season. When it en-US reopened in 1904, rooms started at $4 per en-US night and included three meals daily. In en-US March of 1925, a careless guest failed to en-US turn off her curling iron and, fed by the en-US fresh ocean breeze, an ensuing fire en-US consumed the entire hotel again.en-US The Flagler heirs, having inherited the en-US resort shortly after Henrys death in 1913, en-US again rebuilt. This time the hotel was en-US built of stone and masonry in the Italian en-US Renaissance theme. Several hundred en-US Italian artisans were brought in to sculpt en-US and paint. The rebuild took an astonishen-US -en-US ingly short 11months and cost a en-US then-staggering $7 million.en-US Since that time, the resort has continuen-US -en-US ally added here and there, but the en-US grandeur and charm has remained en-US untouched. The best addition came in en-US 1970 when The Breakers became fully air en-US conditioned, allowing the resort to stay en-US open all year long. Prior it had been open en-US only from December through April. A en-US few years ago the resort completed a $250 en-US million revitalization and expansion en-US program.en-US What I liked best about The Breakers en-US (and the choice was a difficult one en-US because everything is amazing) was the en-US golf. My son and I even enjoyed a lesson en-US at the John Webster Golf Academy before en-US heading to the links to test our games.en-US At the Golf Academy at The Breakers, en-US Webster has assembled the most en-US complete, player-centered golf education en-US experience at any top-tier resort in the en-US country. Judging by my sons noticeable en-US improvement from just one quick lesson, en-US its easy to see why the academy has en-US become one of the top in the country.en-US The Breakers features two golf courses, en-US the Ocean Course and the Rees Jones GOLF en-USJAMES STAMMER en-USSeeen-US en-US STAMMERen-US page 14

en-US 14 en-USCourse.en-US The historic Ocean Course, located adjacent en-US the resort on Palm Beach was redesigned and en-US reconstructed by Brian Silva in 2000. The par-70 en-US course measures just 6,167 yards, challenging en-US your minds skills, rewarding wit over power. en-US The constant ocean winds adding to the test.en-US Silvas redesign of the course brought it back en-US to its 1896 vintage design, while adding modern en-US irrigation and drainage. The course features en-US fabulous landscaping and fairways that weave en-US between sandy hazards, embodying an old-en-US world feel. The putting surfaces are elevated and en-US flanked by deep bunkers and close-cut green en-US surrounds, making a variety of recovery shots en-US possible.en-US For those looking for a more modern en-US challenge, The Breakers Rees Jones Course is en-US located 11 miles west of the main hotel. en-US Measuring 7,104 yards from the back tees, and en-US built in the neo-classic style, the course will test en-US golfers of any ability. en-US While my game was severely tested, my son en-US enjoyed the best back-nine of his life on the en-US Jones Course. The course is just as immaculate en-US and pristine as the Ocean Course, but with a en-US little more room and a wider variety of hole en-US designs and options.en-US While we were playing golf, my wife and our en-US daughter were enjoying a Beach Bungalow, en-US complete with all the amenities of a room, sans en-US the bed. Throw in several pools to choose from, en-US a pristine beach, your own personal concierge, en-US and pampering beyond belief, and I think they en-US were ready to move in.en-US A broad selection of distinctive restaurants, en-US ranging from casual to fine dining, are available en-US at the resort. We chose the Flagler Steakhouse en-US for our dinner experience. And what an en-US experience it was! We enjoyed wonderful en-US seafood, tender steak, tasty appetizers and more en-US from a diverse menu. Everything was paired en-US with the perfect wine by our servers. My en-US daughter declared the house-made chicken en-US strips and the chefs secret buffalo sauce the best en-US she has ever had. Most of us remember all too well en-US how much work it was to get your yard en-US hurricane ready in just a few hours. en-US Now is the time to plan and prepare your en-US yard so if a tropical storm whirls on our en-US doorstep, getting ready wont be so en-US complicated. en-US The first thing you should do at the en-US beginning of hurricane season is to trim en-US all your trees en-US and bushes. Get en-US rid of any en-US foliage that is en-US dead or might en-US be hanging en-US your house. If en-US you any dead en-US or weak trees, en-US cut them down en-US so they dont en-US have a chance en-US to do damage en-US this year. Take a en-US tour of your en-US yard and make en-US a list of items that would dangerous to en-US leave lying around. This list should en-US include patio furniture, loose garden en-US ornaments, small potted plants, yard en-US torches, arbors and even your gas grill. If en-US you have a shed or gazebo, you might en-US want to add extra tie downs to be sure en-US they stay put and dont wind up in Kansas. en-US You can start early by limiting what you en-US keep out in your yard during the peak en-US months of August and September. If you en-US own a swimming pool, you can throw all en-US your patio furniture into the pool to help en-US keep it from traveling across the state. en-US There are many plants you can put in en-US your yard that are both attractive and also en-US seemed to hold up fairly well during a en-US hurricane. Hibiscus, Plumbago, Fireen-US -en-US cracker plant, Ixora, and even my roses en-US seemed to hold up very well during our en-US twin hurricane marathon in 2004. You en-US may also want to consider some plant en-US varieties such as Palmetto Bush, Passionen-US -en-US flower, Azalea Bush, Wax Myrtle, Live en-US Oak and Southern Magnolia. These plants en-US seemed to hold up well during past bouts en-US with tropical systems. They also add a en-US natural beauty to your yard.en-US If you live near the ocean, planting en-US becomes even more of a challenge en-US because you need to have plants that en-US resistant to salt spray. Remember that a en-US hurricane can en-US carry the ocean en-US mist far inland en-US with its 70+-mph en-US winds. Plant en-US varieties such as en-US Indian Hawen-US-en-US thorne, Saw en-US Palmetto, en-US Confederate en-US Jasmine, Society en-US Garlic, Daylily, en-US Pittisporum, en-US Oleander and en-US Mexican Petunia en-US can do very well en-US in areas where salt spray can be a en-US problem. Gardenia plants also can fare en-US well with less than 25 percent damage and en-US full recovery after one growing season. en-US When planning your landscape, if you en-US are going to plant large trees, you should en-US always keep the distance from the tree to en-US the house greater than the height of the en-US tree when it is full grown. If you have any en-US trees that are weak or leaning, either have en-US them secured or remove them if they are en-US within striking distance of your home. en-US Another thing to look for are exposed en-US roots. If the soil has been washed away en-US from the roots of your trees, the root en-US structure may be weakened and allow the en-US tree to topple easily. Fill in these areas en-US with soil back to the original ground en-US level. en-US As you can see, with a few common en-US sense tips and some good planning, you en-US can have both an attractive and safe yard en-US this hurricane season. en-US Joe Zelenak can be reached aten-US homeen-US -en-US en-US or visit his website en-US www.hometownen-US -en-US your yard en-US for hurricane season GARDEN NOOK en-USJOE ZELENAK SCORPIO Oct. 24/Nov. 22 en-USThe time has come to spend less time thinking en-US and more time doing, Scorpio.
