Oyster Festival fun en-USFORT PIERCE -Golf fans and other en-US interested residents came from throughen-US -en-US out St. Lucie County to express their en-US opinions March 30 during a special City en-US Commission meeting held to discuss the en-US fate of the financially beleaguered Indian en-US Hills Golf Course. en-US Mayor Linda Hudson and other memen-US-en-US bers of the Commission had requested en-US the meeting in recent months in light of en-US the significant monetary losses incurred en-US by the municipal course. en-US The city had high hopes for the course en-US purchased for $200,000 in 2002, anticien-US-en-US pating annual revenues of approximately en-US $190,000. Instead, Indian Hills has lost en-US $2.5 million over the last 10 years, with en-US the city having to shore up its budget en-US with nearly $3.2 million out of the generen-US -en-US al fund. A Jan. 17 transfer of $170,000 en-US was the final straw for Mayor Linda en-US Hudson. en-US I believe the commission needs to en-US take a hard look at the financial viability en-US of the golf course as a city enterprise en-US fund, she said during that meeting. I do en-US not have a preconceived conclusion, but en-US it is my fiduciary responsibility to be en-US focused on all city revenue and expendien-US -en-US tures. en-US During a subsequent conference agenen-US-en-US da item on the matter, City Manager en-US Nick Mimms expressed his desire to see en-US the public course treated as a city recreen-US -en-USFuture of en-US Indian Hills en-US discusseden-USDozens of residents en-US plead with Fort Pierce en-US officials to hang on to en-US money-losing course en-USBy Donald Rodrigueen-USFor Hometown Newsen-USST. Pierce en-USST LUCIE COUNTY Charges against en-US Kenneth Hamner, 52, who was accused in en-US December of killing his mother, were en-US recently on March 30 by the Florida States en-US Attorneys Office. Mr. Hamner was immeen-US -en-US diately released from jail afterward, but en-US law enforcement officials and Chief Assisen-US -en-US tant State Attorney Tom Bakkedahl offered en-US no information in the case, other than to en-US say the investigation was ongoing.en-US Additionally, the records in the matter en-US will be sealed because of the active nature en-US of the investigation by Circuit Judge Philip en-US Yacucci, Jr. until a discovery request is en-US answered. Mr. Hamner had been charged en-US in the death of his mother, Sheila Hamner, en-US who was 73, and officials initially thought en-US that the wounds on his arms ostensibly en-US from a machete-wielding assailant were en-US self-inflicted.en-US Ms. Hamner was murdered at her home en-US in the 300 block of Traub Avenue on Dec. en-US 10 and Sheriff Ken Mascara said she died en-US of multiple stab wounds. Mr. Hamner gave en-US a description of the alleged suspect, but no en-US other suspects have been apprehended in en-US the case. He had reportedly been under en-US surveillance for weeks before the arrest en-US and had been facing a second-degree muren-US -en-US der charge before it was dropped and was en-US arrested during a traffic stop in January. en-US He pleaded not guilty on March 6, accorden-US -en-US ing to court records.en-US The description was of a Hispanic man, en-US who was reportedly seen carrying a large en-US knife or machete and a neighbor had filed en-US a 911 call saying that a man had been en-US screaming and injured. Mr. Hamners en-US wounds required a trip to an area hospital.en-US Mr. Hamner lived with his mother at the en-US time of her death and Ms. Hamner was a en-US retired bookkeeper for almost 30 years en-US with the St. Lucie County School District. en-USCharges dropped en-US against man in en-US mothers murderBy Gaylon Parkergparker@hometownnewsol.com en-USHamneren-USSeeen-US en-US CALENDARen-US, page 4

en-US 3 en-USto help keep the aging structure inaugurated en-US in 1988 as the Thomas J. White Stadium en-US competitive with the newer $148.6 million en-US Ballpark of the Palm Beaches. en-US County Administrator Howard Tipton en-US told commissioners their vote March 28 en-US would be the last step in the approval proen-US-en-US cess and pave the way for the massive renoen-US -en-US vation. The planned upgrades include a new en-US main entrance, new practice and training en-US fields, a little league and softball complex en-US for public tournaments, new clubhouses en-US and a wraparound concourse providing en-US spectators with a 360-degree view of the ball en-US field from all vantage points. Mr. Tipton en-US credited the efforts of both local and state en-US officials in making the extending agreement en-US a reality. en-US This is a big step and a big deal for our en-US community, he said. As with any journey en-US and effort thats worthwhile, there are many en-US people to thank, and I want to start with the en-US Board of County Commissioners, both past en-US and present, for their support in working en-US through this. Its not only a big project from en-US a tourism perspective, [but] were tied to our en-US number one market [New York], and that en-US was essential in making this happen.en-US County Attorney Dan McIntyre emphaen-US -en-US sized the essential role the states promised en-US grant funds played in making the Mets deal en-US possible, as well as the countys commiten-US -en-US ment to ramp up its marketing efforts in the en-US Big Apple. Once the Commission accepted en-US the grant for the Department of Economic en-US Opportunity -which will provide $83,333 en-US monthly for 20 years, the county could then en-US begin issuing the bonds. en-US This is part of the overall project that the en-US Board has already approved where we en-US entered into a 25-year lease agreement with en-US the New York Mets to keep them in St. Lucie en-US County, he said. A key component of that en-US agreement, though was funding. We proen-US-en-US posed $55 million in improvements, $20 en-US million of which would come from the state. en-US The balance is going to be funded from en-US some tourist tax monies, and the Mets sigen-US -en-US nificant increase in contributions. The en-US agreement has been reviewed, and the en-US countys bond counsel and financial advisor en-US have made suggested revisions that have en-US been accepted by the Department.en-US Commissioner Frannie Hutchinson peren-US -en-US sonally thanked Mr. Tipton and the county en-US attorney for their involvement with the en-US negotiations, which she admitted werent en-US always an easy dance step to learn.en-US On behalf of the Board Id like to tell en-US both you and Mr. McIntyre thank you, she en-US said. It wasnt easy, and having sat through en-US two of these major contracts on this side of en-US the voting bloc, I cant say enough about en-US how we got there, but it was good.en-US The Commission had previously voted en-US unanimously Jan. 24 to finalize the Amenden-US -en-US ed and Restated Facilities Use Agreement en-US with the Mets, which included a second en-US funding advance of $500,000 to the Mets at en-US the urging of Mr. Tipton for the team to en-US have on hand to immediately begin renovaen-US -en-US tions once the county formally accepted the en-US state grant. Although Commissioner Tod en-US Mowery had expressed concerns that day en-US about the county releasing $1 million before en-US the approval of the final agreement, both en-US the county administrator and Commission en-US Chairman Chris Dzadovsky expressed conen-US-en-US fidence in the team and the safeguards put en-US in place by the countys legal team. As part en-US of the agreement, the Mets will pay 35 peren-US -en-US cent of the $55 million in upgrades, St. Lucie en-US County will pay 53 percent and the state 12 en-US percent. St. Lucie County plans on repaying en-US the state for the grant with funds from sales en-US taxes, tourist development and park taxes en-US and the $2 million in stadium rent it receives en-US annually from the Mets.en-US Chairman Dzadovsky bragged on the en-US teams financial commitment to the county, en-US calling it unprecedented in major league en-US baseball.en-US Were grateful for their commitment to en-US St. Lucie County, but Id also like to mention en-US Thomas J. White and his vision almost 30 en-US years ago to build and create the stadium en-US and that entire region, he said. What weve en-US seen over the last 28 years has been an en-US unmatched return on investment, and we en-US see anywhere from $20 to $30 million a year en-US from an economic engine. The bottom line en-US is, this is an investment in the future -an en-US investment in St. Lucie County -and ceren-US -en-US tainly all of those businesses and residential en-US areas that will benefit from this. Possibly not, as he/she would realize en-US that these older vehicles are so comfortable, en-US very quiet and drive so smooth; and, they en-US have huge trunks for carrying stuff.en-US Yes, they are a little more expensive on en-US gas, but considering everything, it is worth en-US every penny.en-US I have personally taken a ride in the more en-US economical cars, and many of them do not en-US give me the comfort or the ride such as en-US these older cars.en-US Another point to mention is that these en-US larger cars are much safer in an accident en-US than the smaller ones.en-US As far as maintenance goes, these two en-US cars, are usually NOT in the shop constanten-US-en-US ly. With regular maintenance, these cars can en-US last for a long time, and I do mean a long en-US time. My car at present is a Mercury Grand en-US Marquis and is 13 years old with low mileen-US-en-US age. Until that car bites the dust, I will conen-US -en-US tinue to drive it.en-USIn response to Old people and en-US old cars on the roaden-USDid it ever occur to anyone that the older en-US people driving big cars might be the reason en-US they became old.en-US Driving a bigger car is safer.en-US There are too many accidents with injuen-US -en-US ries with unsafe puddle jumper cars than en-US there are with full-sized cars, not to menen-US-en-US tion all the texting while driving from the en-US younger drivers.en-US There should be mandatory suspension en-US of drivers licenses for anyone caught texting en-US while driving.en-US There would be fewer accidents, and en-US insurance premiums would go down as a en-US result of fewer accidents.en-USStolen bicycles?en-USTo the people who took two of my chilen-US-en-US drens bicycles on March 4: Yes, we had a en-US sign in the yard that said Free Stuff, meanen-US -en-US ing you could take all the old cabinets, doors en-US and construction items that we were going en-US to throw in the dumpster.en-US This did not include my childrens bicyen-US -en-US cles. Community notes en-USFoster parent recruitment goes onlineen-USDevereux Community Based Care is giving e-recruiten-US -en-US ment a try in its ongoing pursuit of more foster homes. en-US Foster home recruitment went online earlier this month en-US with the first of a yearlong series of social media ads en-US designed to drive interested Facebookers to a website landen-US -en-US ing page of information and upcoming classes. en-US The ad has reached 13,363 people in Martin and St. Lucie en-US counties. Nearly 300 of those residents took the critical step en-US to click through the ad and visit the website for additional en-US information, including registration links to upcoming fosen-US -en-US ter-parent training classes. en-US This is a new approach for us, so were just watching the en-US ad now and waiting to see how those 300 clicks translate en-US into class attendance, said Christina Kaiser, director of en-US community relations for Devereux Community Based Care. en-US The nonprofit organization coordinates and oversees the en-US child-welfare system in Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee en-US and St. Lucie counties. en-US There are about 140 foster homes in the four-county area, en-US where about 1,000 children and their families receive seren-US -en-US vices. Of that number, about 250 children are living in foster en-US homes or group homes. en-US We have many children in group care who should be in en-US foster homes, Kaiser said. We want to see group care used en-US only for those children who need it and that requires more en-US foster homes. en-US The organizations online recruitment campaign is part of en-US a larger project gradually being rolled out called One en-US School, One Child. The project is a peer-to-peer recruiten-US-en-US ment drive that uses school employees who are also licensed en-US foster parents to recruit from their schools. en-US Campaign organizers will spend much of the spring en-US scheduling presentations at local schools. The official kicken-US -en-US off of the campaign is May 16 at Jensen Beach High School. en-US If you work at a school and would like to have a One en-US School, One Child presentation, please contact christina.en-US kaiser@devereuxcbc.org. en-USFishing tournament for childrenen-USThe Port St. Lucie Anglers Club and the Port St. Lucie en-US Botanical Gardens will co-host a kids fishing tournament en-US on Saturday, April 8 at the gardens, located at 2410 S.E. en-US Westmoreland Blvd., Port St. Lucie.en-US This free event will provide an opportunity for youngen-US-en-US sters through 16 years of age to learn the basics of casting en-US and enjoy some fishing time at a stocked pond. en-US 9 en-USSurf lessons offer Helping Hand to en-US youths with special needsen-US By Gaylon Parkeren-US gparker@hometownnewsol.comen-US TREASURE COAST An area organizaen-US -en-US tion devoted to improving the lives of at-risk en-US and special-needs youths is getting ready to en-US host a series of surf classes to kids. Future 6 en-US Helping Hand will provide the lessons free en-US of charge for youths at a series of locations en-US starting this weekend. en-US The spring/summertime slate of For the en-US Love of Surfing events are planned for Saten-US -en-US urday at Waveland Beach, May 13 at Jensen en-US Beach, June 10 at Dollman Beach in Jensen, en-US July 8 at Stuart Public Beach, again at Waveen-US -en-US land on Aug. 12 and back at Jensen Beach en-US on Sept. 9. The effort is part of a long-term en-US project for Future 6 Vice President Donny en-US Ottofaro, who said the events help children en-US with a variety of difficulties and disabilities en-US come out of their shell and enjoy the water.en-US The classes are 100-percent free and we en-US are trying to reach out to the Treasure Coast en-US Down Syndrome Awareness Group and en-US weve made connections with the Hope en-US Center for Autism, Mr. Ottofaro said. en-US Were building on six different programs en-US and we are very active in the alternative en-US sports community.en-US But the surf classes arent the only outen-US -en-US reach effort the organization is involved en-US with, as there also are skateboarding events en-US in Fort Pierce and other alternative sports en-US outings that bring in youths from different en-US backgrounds and teach them something en-US new. Future 6 also is planning to start an en-US artistic series this summer, designed to en-US expose kids to painting and drawing and en-US other disciplines to give them an appreciaen-US -en-US tion for creativity.en-US Its a pretty amazing scene, with the surf en-US program we work with a broad spectrum of en-US kids with mental and physical difficulties en-US and we work with participants with autism en-US and cerebral palsy and blind students. While en-US were giving kids an opportunity to surf, we en-US dont expect them to stand up and surf; we en-US want them to just get out there and enjoy en-US the waves and that seems to be really en-US rewarding.en-US Kids with Down Syndrome just light up en-US like crazy and they love it, but the kids with en-US autism are probably the most spectacular en-US and rewarding. Weve had families with kids en-US with autism who are non-verbal and after en-US being in our program for a season or two en-US they actually start talking and that affects en-US families tremendously.en-US The surf lessons are conducted with 1.5 en-US volunteers per child to better ensure safety en-US and the skateboarding classes are hosted at en-US Lawnwood Skate Park in Fort Pierce and en-US assisted by a partnership with the St. Lucie en-US County Board of Commissioners and Vice en-US Chairman Tod Mowery. We work with en-US anywhere from 30 to 50 kids that are from en-US some of the more poverty-stricken neighen-US -en-US borhoods in the Fort Pierce area and kids en-US who come over from the Boys & Girls Club.en-US The group has been around since 2010 en-US and has about a dozen official members and en-US many volunteers who contribute. Even some en-US professionals get involved with the events, en-US whether they are surfers, skaters or involved en-US in other endeavors such as art and educaen-US -en-US tion.en-US This is the fourth year of this program en-US and we just finished our second skateboarden-US -en-US ing program in Fort Pierce called Roll Moden-US -en-US els and this year in July we will be starting en-US an arts initiative called Visionaries, Mr. en-US Ottofaro said. We are also looking for a en-USprogram director for our fishing program en-US called Reel Youth Fishing.en-US For more information about Future 6 en-US Helping Hand, visit the Web page at en-US www.en-US f6helpinghanden-US .orgen-US or the Facebook page at en-US www.facebook.com/future6official/en-US. en-US 10 Meet Tater en-USI am a oneyear old en-US Purebred Bloodhound en-US that ended up at the en-US Humane Society en-US because my family en-US divorced. People tell en-US me they just cant en-US help but smile when en-US around me. I have an en-US adorable droopy face en-US that you just want to en-US squeeze. I am houseen-US -en-US broken, I like other en-US dogs, I enjoy playing en-US fetch, and being en-US attached to your hip. en-US A perfect BFF. Please en-US visit Tater at the en-US Humane Society of St. en-US Lucies Port St. Lucie en-US shelter located at en-US 8890 NW Glades en-US Cut-off Rd. For more en-US information call en-US 772-461-0687, or en-US visit www.hsslc.org.en-USLooking for a home Keep things healthy en-USCen-USomputer repair is a tricky business en-US you never know what kind of en-US problems you are going to be asked en-US to solve and there is always the pressure en-US to get it done quickly. Every call is a en-US different challenge and most of the time it en-US can take a half hour or more just looking en-US around trying to get a handle on whats en-US going on before the actual repairs even en-US start. en-US Virus and malware cleanup calls en-US usually always involve running one or en-US more scans to sweep the computer for en-US infected files and these scans can really en-US run up the clock. There is nothing more en-US frustrating than having to wait for a scan en-US to complete and watching as the progress en-US bar inches its way across the screen. The en-US temptation to do other things while a en-US scan is running is high but doing other en-US things while a scan is running on an en-US already sick machine can just make en-US matters worse. Its best to tackle additional en-US tasks after an infection is cleaned. en-US Lets face it, computer maintenance is en-US expensive. At the typical hourly rate one en-US unexpected glitch like a virus infection or en-US registry problem can quickly add up to en-US hundreds of dollars. And whos to say that en-US next month it wont be something en-US different?en-US And to add insult to injury, most of en-US theissues that I regularly clean up en-US wouldnt be an issue if people would just en-US take the time to keep their machines en-US properly maintained. But what steps en-US should people take? Everyoneknows en-US that they should have their system backed en-US up and their antivirus up to date but en-US hardly anyone takes the time to learn how en-US to do it properly let alone do it every en-US month! en-US Most computer manufacturers assume en-US that everyone already knows what they en-US need to do to keep their new machine en-US maintained properly but that can be an en-US unreasonable assumption to make, en-US especially if the new computer owner has en-US little or no experience. And with computen-US -en-US ers as inexpensive as they are today, more en-US and more people who have never used en-US one before are coming home with en-US powerful systems that can confound even en-US the most seasoned computer user. en-US Without proper maintenance its only a en-US matter of time before something goes en-US wrong and the repair bill can approach en-US the price of a new machine! Theres got to en-US be a better way. en-US Wouldnt it be smarter to have an en-US expert set up your machine and then en-US maintain it every month and avoid costly en-US repairs that could have been avoided with en-US regular maintenance? Doesnt it make en-US sense to have someone who knows what en-US theyre doing keep regular tabs on things en-US and nip problems in the bud rather than en-US letting them grow to the point where an en-US expensive service call is inevitable? en-US Well, I think it is and Ive spent some en-US time putting together a program that does en-US just that gives regular computer users a en-US way to keep their machines maintained en-US on a regular basis at a cost that wont en-US break the bank. en-US What Ive put together here a en-US computer service club if you will is a en-US way to offset the high cost of sudden en-US repairs by performing regular monthly en-US check-ups to make sure things are en-US running smoothly. This way we can stop en-US little issues before theybecome big ones. en-US We want to start out with a clean en-US system so when a person joins our club, en-US we connect to their system and do a full en-US tune up and get it running in tip top en-US shape. Even if its infected with viruses or en-US malware, well clean it first. Well even set en-US up the backup system and make sure its en-US configured properly. en-US Then, once a month we reconnect and en-US give the system a once over. We encouren-US -en-US age people to use this time to ask any en-US questions that they have and well address en-US any issues that may have come up over the en-US previous month. Well verify the system, en-US the antivirus, the backup and the security en-US settings. And we make sure they are all set en-US for the next month. en-US Its been more than five years since I en-US started the monthly remote support en-US club and all of my club members seem en-US pretty satisfied so far. We have also been en-US able to nip a few problems in the bud en-US before turning into big issues; just the way en-US I planned. en-US If this sounds like something you en-US would like to take part in, drop me a line en-US or give me a call. Ill be happy to answer en-US your questions. en-US Sean McCarthy fixes computers. He can en-US be reached at 888-752-9049 or en-US help@en-US ComputeThisOnline.com en-US (no hyphens!) Needless to say, the sale en-US of $2 hotdogs is not going to come close to en-US meeting the food and beverage projections en-US that were part of the National Golf Associaen-US -en-US tion feasibility study.en-US Indian Hills employee Cynthia Conner en-US spoke from her own experience, insisting en-US the course needs a new clubhouse to regain en-US its former glory.en-US I have worked in the golf course in the en-US beverage department for nine years, she en-US said. I watched the old clubhouse being en-US torn down, and for nine years Ive worked in en-US what we call the box. A lot of people in this town, en-US their children were married at Indian Hills. en-US Their grandchildren would like to be maren-US -en-US ried there, but theres no facility to do those en-US things.en-US Several of the public speakers decried that en-US fact that the game of golf was no longer en-US attracting youthful players and insisted the en-US city do more recruiting efforts through area en-US educational institutions. Although most golf en-US course backers were middle-aged, one notaen-US-en-US bly younger speaker -former golf course en-US employee San Barnes -did speak out on en-US behalf of the course. en-US I started as a cart attendant, was a pro en-US shop attendant and now Im on my way up en-US to trying to manage something, he said. en-US Without Indian Hills, I never would have en-US played collegiate level golf.en-US At the conclusion of the meeting Mr. en-US Mimms said he would report back within 90 en-US days on suggestions for the Commission.en-US Were going to figure out how to turn en-US this thing around, he said. This year, the bottles will have little en-US Easter bows on them or something like en-US that. en-US The company hosted a en-US Haunted Brewery for en-US Halloween last year and en-US Santa Brewery during en-US Christmas.en-US Every holiday, we try en-US and do something for the en-US community as much as we en-US can, Mr. Bradley said. en-US This a great opportunity, en-US also, for people to see whats en-US on the whole brewery floor en-US and the outside premises, en-US because they are all part of en-US the hunt. You really get to see all the things en-US that arent roped off for safety and learn en-US about the company and our brewery operaen-US -en-US tion.en-US Mr. Bradley added that the company en-US which also has a location in the Keys en-US decided on moving to Fort Pierce because it en-US is a growing community with abundant en-US potential. We really love being out here and en-US we are super-excited, and as the city grows en-US we hope it brings even more businesses to en-US the area he said.en-US For more information, visit www.faceen-US -en-US book.com/events/1310161732382719/.en-USBeer company hosts inaugural Easter huntBy Gaylon Parkergparker@hometownnewsol.com will be The Original Wailers next weekend en-USon April 15, featuring Al Anderson who en-US performed with Bob Marley and the Wailers en-US in the 1970s and 80s. Also on the horizon a en-US couple of weeks after that is Everclear on en-US April 29, which had a string of hits in the en-US 1990s and early 2000s, and country star en-US Jamey Johnson, who is one of the more popen-US-en-US ular traditional country artists today and en-US will be on stage May 27. en-US More importantly, Mr. Paul is bringing in en-US the artists on his own dime and hasnt en-US requested funds from the city to bring in the en-US talent. He said its important that he makes en-US an investment in the community and helps en-US it prosper as a whole. Well keep on with en-US the effort and the direction we are going in, en-US and we will continue to increase the food en-US and provide quality service and kind of keep en-US pushing the place to where its one of the en-US nicer resorts on the Treasure Coast, he said. en-US Mr. Paul gives much of the credit for the en-US new range of talent to Deuterman Producen-US -en-US tions. The owner, who goes by the name en-US Deuterman, has extensive connections in en-US the music business and he has a passion for en-US the city of Fort Pierce. He said the city en-US deserves to see high-profile artists and they en-US enjoy the atmosphere at The Inlet Grill, en-US which has a resort connected to it and en-US makes the stay more convenient for the en-US musicians.en-US I havent had a problem yet, so every arten-US -en-US ist that has come there leaves happy and en-US talks about it to the other touring artists and en-US thats why the buzz is always so strong, en-US Deuterman said. Collie Buddz (a reggae en-US musician) has a room that he gets every en-US time hes there and he loves to be able to en-US look down and see the show venue before he en-US gets there and even Jamey Johnson asked for en-USa special room and its very accommodaten-US-en-US ing.en-US Deuterman Productions has been around en-US for 10 years and he looks forward to securen-US -en-US ing more and better talent in coming years. en-US Its a very unique venue and not a tradien-US -en-US tional venue, and the ones that we do get fit en-US in there, especially for an area that doesnt en-US get to see shows of this type and magnitude. en-US Usually, the A-markets gobble them up, so I en-US have a good relationship in the business and en-US they trust me that the show will be run peren-US -en-US fectly and smooth, he said.en-US For more information, visit their Faceen-US-en-US book page or en-US en-US www.theinletgrill.com/.en-USBeachsideen-USFrom page 13

One of the most en-US practical ways is through the use of roses. en-US Roses are beautiful flowers that symbolize en-US love and friendship. Imagine yourself en-US entertaining your friends in a lovely alcove en-US surrounded by colorful flowers. Roses are en-US relatively easy to grow and are a great en-US choice because they will often grow where en-US other flowers wont because of Floridas en-US intense summer sun. You can buy roses as en-US either a container plant or as bare root-en-US stock. en-US Roses can be successfully planted in en-US either containers or in the ground. In either en-US case, the plants should be in well-drained en-US soil in a sunny location. If you plant your en-US treasures in the ground, be sure the soil en-US drains well. Dig a hole about 15-18 inches en-US wide and 18 inches deep. Put a layer of en-US gravel on the bottom of the hole. This is to en-US allow drainage so water drains away from en-US the root system. The same would apply if en-US you plant your roses in a container. en-US The next step is to prepare the soil you en-US are going to use to plant your roses. You en-US should use a mix of a good quality potting en-US soil with around half the mixture comen-US -en-US posed of organic matter such as mulch or en-US peat. You can also use some bone meal with en-US your soil mixture. en-US Now, its finally time to plant your prize. en-US Carefully remove the plant from its original en-US container. Place the plant in your prepared en-US hole so the top of soil layer on the plant is en-US the same level as the surrounding soil. Fill en-US the gap underneath the plant with your en-US prepared soil mixture. Now, fill the gaps en-US around the remaining parts of the plant en-US and pack down lightly. You are now ready en-US to water in your newly planted rose. en-US OK, you finally have your roses planted en-US and they are bursting with color, now you en-US need to do some periodic maintenance to en-US maintain that beauty. Since we live in such en-US a humid climate, certain diseases such as en-US black powdery mildew and black spot can en-US both be a common problem. Both diseases en-US are much easier to control if you prevent en-US them happening in the first place. Once en-US established, both are very difficult to get rid en-US of. Although there are many products on en-US the market that are used for disease control en-US on roses, Orthenex reigns as the king. The en-US product controls not only diseases but also en-US controls insect infestation as well. en-US If you are interested in an all-natural en-US cure for fungus, how about baking soda? en-US Plain ordinary baking soda added at the en-US rate of 3 teaspoons per gallon of water. You en-US can add a small amount of mild dish en-US detergent to the mix to act as a spreader en-US sticker. This will work as a preventive en-US measure but will not work well if an en-US infection is present. Be sure not to make en-US your mix too strong as damage to your en-US roses could result. en-US With all the remedies that we have at our en-US disposal for controlling rose problems, en-US probably the best way is prevention. One en-US way is to avoid watering late in the day so en-US the leaves of the plant do not stay wet all en-US night. Also it is important to have good soil en-US drainage. en-US Roses are heavy feeders and like a good en-US supply of food. Roses should be fed at least en-US once a month. You can use a good quality en-US commercial food or you can use your own en-US mix, which should consist of one cup of en-US bone meal, one cup cottonseed meal, en-US one-half cup blood meal, one-half cup en-US fish-meal and one-half cup Epsom salts. en-US You can spread this mix around each plant en-US and then water in. en-USJoe Zelenak has more than 30 years en-US experience in gardening and landscape. en-US 18 en-USTen-UShis week the 2017 Masters tees off. en-US Like every year, our years first major en-US promises to be quite exciting and full en-US of drama. Instead of boring you with yet en-US another Masters tale, I will give you a few en-US strange facts and one mystery that just may en-US win you a bet or two one day.en-US The two large trees on the lawn behind en-US the clubhouse are live oaks, which are not en-US native to this part of Georgia en-US Augusta National grounds chairman Roy en-US Simkins estimates they are about 150 years en-US old and were brought from the Coastal area en-US when the old manor house was first built in en-US the mid-1800s. Because of lightning strikes en-US and disease, the cavity of one tree was filled en-US with cement years ago and an assortment of en-US cables up top keep the long, thick branches en-US from striking the club house under windy en-US conditions. en-US The body of water that runs in front of en-US the 12th green and behind the 11th was en-US named after John Rae, a well-known figure en-US in Augusta in the mid-to-late 1700s. en-US Rae was a head partner in Brown, Rae en-US and Company, which controlled 75 percent en-US of the Indian trade in the south. Raes house en-US was the farthest fortress up the Savannah en-US River from Fort Augusta. It provided safety en-US for area residents during Indian scares en-US when protection from Fort Augusta was en-US out of reach. en-US The creek, named for Rae in the late en-US 1750s, begins nine miles outside of en-US downtown in Columbia en-US County and flows to Lake en-US Olmstead which is just en-US down Washington Road from en-US Augusta National.en-US The remains of an Indian en-US burial ground were discoven-US -en-US ered in the area of the 12th en-US green when the course was en-US built in the early 1930s.en-US Imagine beginning your en-US round with Amen Corner. en-US Thats the way Bobby Jones en-US and course designer Alister en-US MacKenie originally laid the en-US course out. This is also how it en-US was played for the first en-US tournament in 1934, won by en-US Horton Smith.en-US A year later, when Gene Sarazen made en-US his infamous double eagle on No. 15, the en-US nines were reversed. The reason being that en-US frost was slower to thaw out on the lower en-US portion of the golf course near Amen en-US Corner. This caused a problem with early en-US morning tee times. en-US There is one lonely palm tree on the golf en-US course and it is difficult to spot. It grows on en-US the par-3 fourth hole. Its nearly covered up en-US by bamboo, but if you stand near the en-US bunker to the right of the green and look en-US straight ahead, you can see it.en-US Many years ago, when leading the en-US tournament, Arnold Palmer, as he was en-US walking down the 11th fairway, felt the call en-US of nature. Palmer recalled, So I walked off en-US to the left in the trees to relieve myself. en-US Much to my surprise when I walked out of en-US the trees, I got a standing ovation from the en-US gallery. The next year, Clifford Roberts had en-US built an outhouse down there. And, no, en-US thankfully he didnt name it after me. en-US The par-3 16th hole may not be the most en-US dramatic short hole on the course, but it en-US underwent the most dramatic change. The en-US original design had the tee far to the right en-US of its current position (approximately en-US behind the 15th green) and it was only a en-US 120-yard short iron shot over a creek. en-US The members loved the hole, but it was en-US considered too weak for tournament play. en-US So, in 1947, Bobby Jones invited architect en-US Robert Trent Jones to town to talk about en-US redesigning the hole. Trent Jones turned the en-US creek into a fairway length pond, moved en-US the green to the left and rebuilt the tee back en-US about 60 yards and to the left. en-US During construction, a big rainstorm en-US came and flooded what would become the en-US pond area, submerging a tractor, which was en-US left in the pond for some time. en-US If youre lucky enough to be asked, the en-US initiation fee for the club membership is en-US $25,000. Monthly dues are $100 and a en-US nights lodging on the grounds will run you en-US $100. The minimum caddy fee is $55 and en-US the guest green fee is $60. en-US Finally, a mystery. Augusta National en-US co-founder, Clifford Roberts, ruled the club en-US and tournament with an iron fist, even in en-US death. en-US At the age of 80, Roberts was diagnosed en-US with cancer. On the morning of September en-US 29, 1977, in failing health, the 84 year old en-US chairman went down to the edge of Ikes en-US Pond at the Par-3 Course and took his own en-US life. en-US Roberts was cremated, and his ashes in en-US an urn are buried somewhere on the en-US Augusta National grounds. The whereen-US -en-US abouts are the clubs most well-kept secret. en-US James Stammer has been an avid golfer en-US and golf enthusiast for nearly 40 years.
