No member of the en-US public spoke at either meeting, but City Clerk en-US Linda Cox said Feb. 9 that the current requireen-US -en-US ment of moving the trucks nightly had become a en-US burden to many vendors. en-US The current ordinance requires that every sinen-US -en-US gle night a mobile vending unit be removed from en-US the premises, and sometimes that can create a real en-US challenge for the mobile vendor operators, she en-US said. Weve heard repeatedly that they just felt en-US that it was just too cumbersome for them to really en-US effectively remove it. And as long as they had peren-US -en-US mission from the property owner, no one really en-US seemed to challenge that they could stay there.en-US Commissioner Rufus Alexander worried that en-US simply removing the requirement for the trucks to en-US move every night could create additional proben-US -en-US lems. en-US What about an eyesore? he asked. The reaen-US -en-US son I say that is you might have some vendors just en-US maybe there on Friday and Saturday, and now en-US youre telling me theyre going to be able to park en-US there month after month?en-US Ms. Cox said the decision would ultimately lie en-US with the Commission.en-USFort Pierce amends en-US vendor ordinanceen-USMobile food trucks can now stay up to three days onsiteen-USBy Donald Rodrigueen-USFor Hometown Newsen-USSeeen-US en-US VENDORen-US page 2en-USFORT PIERCE -The City Commisen-US -en-US sion voted unanimously Feb. 21 to sell en-US the old Fort Pierce Post Office to a local en-US resident who plans a unique retail cenen-US -en-US ter in the Orange Avenue structure listen-US -en-US ed on the National Register of Historic en-US Places. en-US City Manager Nick Mimms told en-US commissioners that restrictive coveen-US-en-US nants on the property that Fort Pierce en-US purchased from the federal governen-US -en-US ment in 2002 had made the sale comen-US-en-US plicated. Fort Pierce resident Stanley en-US Synkoski offered the city $139,000 for en-US the property and plans to house various en-US businesses in the structure. Mr. Mimms en-US said he agreed to the restrictions, which en-US among other things, prohibit the develen-US-en-US oper from altering the exterior faade en-US of the building. en-US Its a very exciting venture, Mr. en-US Mimms said. Theyve got everything en-US from chocolate to orange juice to cofen-US-en-US fee, and I get excited when I read this en-US proposal.en-US According to city records, Mr. Synen-US -en-US koski has proposed launching a comen-US-en-US mercial establishment offering everyen-US-en-US thing from beachwear to candles, en-US jewelry and other handicrafts made by en-US local artisans. Ruhnke Street, Stuart, en-USIts up to you guys if you dont want that en-US to happen, she added. We havent experien-US -en-US enced any problems or challenges that Im en-US aware of that wouldnt necessitate that unit en-US be removed every single night. en-US Part of the movement issue stems from en-US the great variety of food vendors, she en-US explained. en-US There are a lot of units that will be en-US removed every night because they need to en-US be, but there are units that dont necessarily en-US have to be moved every night in order to en-US function the way they were designed, she en-US said. Its not a one-size-fits-all: Theyre hot en-US dog carts, there are food trucks -Theres so en-US many different types of vending units.en-US Other commissioners, such as Commisen-US-en-US sioner Reginald Sessions, resisted the en-US change at first because they felt it would en-US provide mobile vendors an undue advantage en-US over traditional restaurants and other estaben-US-en-US lishments. en-US It appears that with most of these revien-US -en-US sions, were attempting to give the mobile en-US units the privilege of brick and mortar, and en-US theyre not paying the cost of brick and en-US mortar, he said. If they want these privilegen-US -en-US es, then they need to invest in a building and en-US start paying some taxes and some other en-US things. At what point are we going to have en-US these mobile units all over the city of Fort en-US Pierce and nobody will start investing in en-US buildings and start renting buildings and en-USbuilding buildings?en-US Commissioner Thomas Perona conen-US-en-US curred.en-US Im all for the brick and mortars, he en-US said. Its really hard for me with the mobile en-US vending because its not what my vision of en-US Fort Pierce was, but its getting to be part of en-US the entertainment part of what we have to en-US offer.en-US The commissioner did say that at least en-US one brick and mortar establishment had en-US worked cooperatively with a mobile vendor en-US on its own property and found it difficult to en-US move the truck in and out nightly.en-US Sailfish Brewery had a food truck that en-US would come there but it was difficult to en-US orchestrate and get this truck in the back of en-US the property where it wanted to be, Comen-US -en-US missioner Perona explained. There are siten-US-en-US uation sometimes where were accommoen-US -en-US dating a brick and mortar, so I think thats en-US whats being envisioned here.en-US In response to questions from Commisen-US-en-US sioner Sessions about encouraging such en-US entrepreneurs to put down roots, Ms. Cox en-US said not everyone could afford the investen-US -en-US ment.en-US We would love that, but I dont think en-US thats an option for everyone, she said. en-US Commissioner Sessions felt that leaving en-US the current restrictions in place might just en-US encourage such investment and bring more en-US revenue into city coffers. en-US I guarantee then, it will dawn on them to en-US eventually build a building if it causes en-US enough hardship, he said. I would rather en-US see them with a big shiny building and four en-US walls with a tax bill coming from a tax en-US appraisers office.en-US Mayor Linda Hudson managed to get the en-US whole Commission on-board with a conen-US -en-US sensus on a three-day limit, which appeared en-US to satisfy Commissioner Perona.en-US I think it would resolve this with a time en-US certain, he said. I think three days would en-US cover a weekend.en-US The Commission subsequently voted en-US unanimously to approve the change, as well en-US as affirm the prohibition on mobile vendors en-US on public property without first seeking a en-US waiver. They also added the category of seaen-US -en-US food and peanut vendor to the itinerant en-US retail and produce vendor section of the en-US ordinance. en-USVendoren-USFrom page 1 en-USSeeen-US en-US CALENDARen-US, page 11

en-US 3 TREASURE COAST If a new study is en-USany indication, there are many households en-US along the Treasure Coast that are barely en-US making ends meet. The United Ways recent en-US ALICE report, which stands for en-US AssetLimited,IncomeConen-US-en-US strained,Employed, shows that there are en-US nearly 100,000 or about 43 percent of en-US households that are unable to afford the en-US basics of housing, food, health care, child en-US care and transportation despite full-time en-US employment.en-US While more than 69,568 households live en-US above the poverty line, they are currently en-US below the ALICE threshold, or the basic en-US cost of living. en-US The report, places a spotlight on harden-US -en-US working, and yet struggling residents who en-US have little or no savings and are one emeren-US -en-US gency from falling into poverty. ALICE was en-US originally introduced in 2014 and the en-US update provides a deeper look at how en-US households have struggled over time since en-US before the recession in 2007 through 2015, en-US said The United Way through a press en-US release. en-US The report takes data from a variety of en-US sources, including the U.S. Census, Bureau en-US of Labor Statistics, Internal Revenue Service en-US and Florida Department of Education to en-US form its conclusions, and many of those are en-US troubling.en-US ALICE individuals and families are en-US working jobs that are vital to the success of en-US our communities and yet they continue to en-US struggle with the basics. As a United Way en-US network we will continue to work to find en-US solutions that will help our hard working en-US friends and neighbors, said Michael Kint, en-US chief executive officer of The United Way of en-US Indian River County.en-US The report reaffirms that we have made en-US real progress, but we still have a long way to en-US go to advance the quality of life for all peoen-US -en-US ple in our communities, said Karen Knapp, en-US CEO/President, United Way of St. Lucie en-US County.en-US Among the data cited were some signs of en-US improvement. In Martin County, for examen-US -en-US ple, the households below the ALICE line en-US were about 45 percent in 2012 but that en-US number dropped to 41 percent by 2015. en-US Household incomes during that time en-US increased from about $44,821 to $51,622 en-US but the household survival budget had risen en-US from $55,030 to about $61,136.en-US We have data from our community since en-US 2007, which would have been before the en-US recession, and at that point it was about 29 en-US percent of the households in the county en-US were ALICE households, said Carol G. en-US Houwaart-Diez, President/CEO, United en-US Way of Martin County. Then, in 2010, it en-US was 42 percent and in 2012 it was 45 and in en-US 2015 it was 41 percent.en-US In some ways, we have made some progen-US -en-US ress, but does that mean the economy is en-US turning around? I think so, perhaps. But I en-US think we have a long way to go.en-US Ms. Houwaart-Diez said the report is en-US helpful also to localize the areas of concern. en-US For example, in Palm City the numbers are en-US 28 percent now and were only at 27 percent en-US in 2012 but in Hobe Sound they have en-US increased from 48 percent in 2012 to 53 peren-US -en-US cent in 2015. Indiantown was at 55 percent en-US in 2012 and is now at 62 percent. Rio, during en-US the same time, dropped from 50 percent in en-US 2012 to 46 percent in 2015.en-US Meanwhile, in St. Lucie County the en-US households below the ALICE threshold en-US were about 49 percent in 2012 but at 46 peren-US -en-US cent in 2015. The median income line en-US improved from $41,785 to $45,905 during en-US those years but the survival budget has en-US increased from $51,036 to $53,856.en-US In Indian River County, statistics show en-USAlmost half of Treasure Coast households en-US struggling, report saysen-USBy Gaylon Photo courtesy of The United Way en-USTreasure Coast United Way CEOs gathered in Tallahassee for the en-US launch of the updated ALICE Report, reflecting statistical data for en-US the Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed households. Fort Pierce originally paid $100,000 for en-US the building in 2002 but rejected a recent en-US $160,000 offer because the developer had en-US no specific plans in place for the structure. en-US Commissioner Rufus Alexander had seven-US -en-US eral questions concerning the deal, includen-US -en-US ing how the city planned on spending the en-US proceeds. Mr. Mimms said the ultimate en-US decision would fall in the lap of the Comen-US -en-US mission. en-US I believe we talked about establishing a en-US restricted revenue account for all of the sales en-US of our surplus property to include both the en-US city and Fort Pierce Redevelopment Agency, en-US so it would have to be two separate en-US accounts, he said We would establish that en-US account and we would have that on all of en-US our monthly reports moving forward. It en-US would be at your discretion as to how we en-US would use those funds.en-US Commissioner Alexander also expressed en-US concern that the city might not be making en-US enough money on the deal after having to en-US put a new roof on the building since the en-US purchase. Mr. Mimms admitted he was en-US unfamiliar with the renovation but Mayor en-US Linda Hudson confirmed the citys investen-US -en-US ment. en-US We spent some money on it, she said. en-US Mr. Mimms did say the new owner could en-US benefit from the less demanding parking en-US requirements available since the recent foren-US -en-US mation of the Peacock Arts District. With en-US the passage of that ordinance, developers en-US occupying one of the areas established en-US buildings such as the Historic Post Office en-US receive a 50 percent reduction in the en-US required number of parking spaces. en-US I believe, based upon the retail establishen-US -en-US ment, this would be a change of use, so they en-US would actually benefit from this parking en-US reduction if there is not adequate parking en-US onsite, he said. en-US The U.S. Postal Service closed the Orange en-US Avenue facility in 2001 in hopes of driving en-US business to the newer facilities at Orange en-US Avenue and 17th Street and Midway Road. en-US In order to satisfy a federal Memorandum en-US of Agreement with the U.S. Postal Service, en-US the city must provide the entity with a en-US 90-day notice of intent to sell. en-USPost Officeen-USFrom page 1 en-USSunset Rotary supports Grace en-US Pack Program en-USOn March 1, Port St. Lucie Sunset Rotary en-US Club members delivered enough food to en-US Morningside Elementary Schools Grace en-US Pack Program to send 46 food-insecure stuen-US -en-US dents home with a weekends worth of en-US meals. en-US Before we received this donation, our en-US entre shelf was completely bare, said Julie en-US Moore, teacher coordinator at Morningside en-US Elementary School in Port St. Lucie. Literen-US -en-US ally, all those shelves were completely bare. en-US Moore said that the school sends home en-US two breakfast items, two lunch items, two en-US snacks, two juices, and two dinner entrees en-US with 46 schoolchildren every Friday during en-US the school year. We are the wealthiest en-US country in the world and we have such en-US need, she said. en-US Over the past two weeks, members of the en-US Port St. Lucie Sunset Rotary Club went out en-US and shopped for easy-to-serve food for en-US Morningside School. Our members signed en-US up to bring at least 50 individual food items en-US each for the children, paid for out of their en-US own pockets, said Jeannette Weiss, theen-US en-US clubs president. Helping Port St. Lucies en-US children is part of our clubs mission. en-US Feeding Americas 2014 study, Map the en-US Meal Gap, found that 26.1 percent ofen-US en-US St. Lucie County children are food insecure. en-US Grace Pack programs are provided en-US through many of St. Lucie Countys schoolsen-US en-US and each program relies on community en-US donations. It is sad to see them condone these lies.en-US Because (President) Trump does not like en-US what the media is saying about him does not en-US make them the enemy.en-US Senator (John) McCain said suppressing en-US the free press is how dictators get started. en-US The last time a president said this he en-US resigned in disgrace, (former President en-US Richard) Nixon.en-US Maybe our president should man up to en-US the fact that the media is doing their job, en-US which they have every right to do; and this en-US is not Cuba.en-USAmerican families are suffering. en-US Does he care?en-US We looked all over the place to find any en-US comment made by our president about the en-US flooding and mess in California.en-US We can not find any remarks he has made en-US about the suffering of the families, Amerien-US -en-US cans in California, or for that matter, any en-US remarks any time about the Americans sufen-US -en-US fering at the hands of Mother Nature. He en-US seems so much more interested in his popuen-US -en-US larity with his base than caring about real en-US suffering.en-US But then again, just what did the people en-US who decided that he was good for America en-US believe? That he had a real heart? Maybe he has, but en-US no one has heard anything from him.en-US Not being a fan of this president, I am not en-US surprised at his lack of compassion. He en-US seems to much like a spoiled child to care en-US about the suffering of anyone, except in the en-US case of his family member being dropped by en-US a clothing store. en-US 8 Blocking spam can en-USmake your life easieren-USEen-USvery day when I open my email, I am en-US flooded with spam. I get messages en-US trying to sell me everything from en-US Viagra to discount mortgages to memberen-US -en-US ships at adult Web sites. I even get an en-US occasional message from a dethroned en-US prince from Nigeria promising that if only en-US I help him (by giving him my bank account en-US information) hell be able to get access to en-US his frozen assets and give me several en-US million for my troubles. Its gotten to the en-US point that out of 60 to 70 messages only a en-US handful are legitimate. en-US How is it that I, a computer fixer with en-US decades of experience, can get flooded with en-US spam? Dont I, of all people, know how to en-US manage this scourge any better? Frankly no. en-US But its not from a lack of trying. en-US Unfortunately, just about everything Ive en-US tried to stem the flow of spam has had en-US either negative or short-term effects. Ive en-US found the most effective way (for me en-US anyway) is to just scan the subject headers en-US and click the delete button and nuke all the en-US unwanted emails one by one. en-US I know what you are thinking. Many of en-US you are successfully using some sort of en-US spam filter and are thinking, If Sean would en-US just switch to this method, all of his spam en-US woes would be over." en-US All I can really say to that is thanks, but en-US no thanks. Over the years, as I have tried en-US one method after another to manage en-US unwanted email, Ive noticed a common en-US thread; many spam filters are too aggressive en-US and have a tendency to delete messages I en-US actually want. Many spam filters will look en-US at the senders domain name and filter the en-US message that way. The problem with that is en-US I may actually want messages from that en-US domain and the spam filter can unintenen-US -en-US tionally red flag messages that I actually en-US want to read. en-US An example of that would be the time I en-US was trying to refinance my home. My en-US father, being ever helpful, sent me an e-mail en-US listing the mortgage rates of a certain en-US lender. The spam filter spotted the key en-US words low mortgage rates and filtered en-US that message as spam. Then, since the en-US offending message came from my dads en-US email address, all future messages from him en-US were filtered. The really frustrating thing en-US was that I didnt know my dads e-mail was en-US getting filtered, so I didnt know he was en-US trying to email me until he called, annoyed en-US that I was ignoring his emails. en-US Other methods have had mixed results, en-US too. One question that always comes up is en-US how do these spammers get your email en-US address in the first place?" Its not like you en-US go to some site and sign up for spam. Ive en-US seen cases where people get new email en-US accounts and within a week the flow of en-US spam begins. How is that possible?en-US There are dozens of ways that email en-US addresses end up as targets for the spamen-US -en-US mers, but Ill just cover a couple. en-US Forwarding e-mail messages to everyone en-US in your address book (or just corresponden-US -en-US ing with someone who engages in this en-US practice) can expose your address to the en-US spammers, because as the messages gets en-US forwarded on and on, so do all the en-US addresses listed in the email. Then, once en-US out in cyberspace, there are a number of en-US ways that the addresses can get harvested en-US from that email. en-US Another method is the old random en-US email address trick. What they do is use a en-US computer program to generate thousands en-US of email addressed using random dictioen-US -en-US nary words, letters and numbers before the en-US @ symbol and the domain name. Then they en-US send out test messages to the randomly en-US generated addresses and the ones that dont en-US get rejected by the mail system as a bad en-US address, they keep. They end up with a list en-US of addresses that they know go somewhere. en-US If you have ever gotten an email with no en-US subject and no message its possible that en-US thats where that message is coming from en-US and unfortunately, by the time you get the en-US message, its too late. They already know en-US that the email address is a good one.en-US Until I find a method to manage the flow en-US of spam that does not have unwanted side en-US effects, I guess I will just continue to just en-US delete them as they come in. At least I dont en-US have to walk out to the mailbox in the rain en-US to get my junk mail.en-US Sean McCarthy fixes computers. I en-US know the Affordable Care Act was figured en-US in when they did the report this time and en-US what they do when they figure this report en-US with the Affordable Care Act, there may be en-US a difference between what is required and en-US what people actually do.en-US She added that the higher costs of some en-US mandates and premiums under the Afforden-US -en-US able Care Act also changed the data over the en-US past few years.en-US Treasure Coasts United Ways have been en-US using the ALICE Report to shape programs en-US and policies in local communities. You can also email me at N en-USormally during the summer en-US months, Mother Nature leaves us en-US with enough daily rain to keep our en-US lawns green and plush with only a minimal en-US amount of manual watering. Most of this en-US beneficial rainfall falls during the months of en-US June, July, August and September. The en-US remainder of the year can often leave our en-US lawns and yards with a serious deficiency of en-US water. This either requires us to water our en-US lawns by hand or use portable sprinklers. en-US The problem with this is that you have to en-US move the sprinklers around the yard in en-US order to get even coverage. en-US Another alternative is a home irrigation en-US system. A well-planned in-ground system en-US can be easily controlled with a timer box en-US and can even shut itself off when it rains to en-US conserve water. The drawbacks of an en-US in-ground system are maintenance and en-US cost. Even a good system will require en-US regular maintenance to maintain efficiency. en-US The good news is that the system will en-US eventually pay for itself over time with what en-US you will save on landscape maintenance.en-US To design a good system, you should en-US start out with a map, drawn to scale, of the en-US area you wish to irrigate. Be sure to include en-US all the details including plants and builden-US -en-US ings. Then, draw in the diagram of the en-US route you are going to use for the PVC pipe. en-US Mark off the spots where you will install en-US your sprinkler heads and consider whether en-US you need a full, half or quarter spray and en-US also the distance needed to cover that en-US segment. Be sure your segments overlap to en-US ensure you have no dead spots. You can en-US draw this out on graph paper or you can en-US buy special kits that guide you through the en-US planning process.en-US The next thing that must be considered en-US is how many zones you will have on your en-US system. If you try to put too many sprinkler en-US heads on your system, the water pressure en-US may be too low to operate that zone en-US correctly. You may only want to put four or en-US five sprinkler heads in one zone or even less en-US if you have poor water pressure. The en-US various zones will be rotated automatically en-US by the electronic water timer. In fact, more en-US zones give you more versatility when it en-US comes to managing your system. en-US The best water source for your system is en-US to have a separate well and pump to feed en-US water to your sprinklers but for some en-US people this is not in the budget. You can use en-US an existing well and pump that you use for en-US your home water supply with good results. en-US If you happen to have an onsite pond or en-US water retention area, you can recycle this en-US water by pumping directly from these en-US sources. en-US One important part that should be en-US installed on your system is an automatic en-US rainfall override. These inexpensive devices en-US automatically shut off your system when en-US sufficient rain falls and en-US satisfies the adjustable sensor. en-US These devices not only save en-US water and electricity but they en-US also prevent your lawn from en-US getting watered too heavily. en-US In fact, they are required by en-US code in many counties. en-US There are three basic en-US pumps that are most en-US frequently used to power en-US irrigation systems: A surface en-US centrifugal pump, a jet pump en-US and a submersible centrifugal en-US pump. The most commonly en-US used pump for home use is a en-US jet pump. These pumps can en-US be used for both shallow and en-US deep well applications. For en-US very deep well applications, a en-US submersible centrifugal en-US pump may be used. The en-US disadvantage is if the pump en-US needs to be serviced it has to be removed en-US from the well. en-US One last consideration is the quality of en-US the water being pumped from the well. If en-US the water has a lot of sediment or sand, it en-US will be necessary to install a sand filter en-US inline before the water reaches the sprinen-US -en-US kler heads. This will help prevent clogging en-US of the sprinklers and will provide more en-US enjoyable and trouble free operation of en-US your system.en-US The bottom line: A well designed water en-US system can save you loads of time and take en-US the worry out of getting the proper en-US amounts of water to your lawn. In the long en-US run, it can pay for itself over time by saving en-US you money on lawn maintenance. There is en-US also one added bonus; you can install an en-US inline device that will actually allow you to en-US fertilize your lawn directly through the en-US water system! This can be a real time saver en-US and convenience option. en-USJoe Zelenak has more than 30 years en-US experience in gardening and landscape. en-US 15 en-USFort Pierce, and the three are committed to en-US helping Fort Pierce grow and improve en-US through the business community and proen-US -en-US viding jobs. Mr. Reed is himself a born-and-en-US bred Fort Pierce native and said one thing en-US that makes him happy is that he sees business en-US and government leaders in Sweeties on a en-US daily basis.en-US I wanted to make sure that this restaurant en-US replicated the diversity in our community, en-US and our customers are reflective of that en-US diversity as well, Mr. Reed said. en-US The other obligation he had for his staff en-US and menu is that the food is affordable and en-US fresh. They go through about 400 pounds of en-US ground beef per week, and there is a good en-US reason why: The Burger was simply amazing en-US and had a taste that one just cannot find in a en-US fast-food or corporate joint and at less than en-US $6. Return customers rave about the atmoen-US -en-US sphere and upon walking through the door en-US its common to hear everything from Marty en-US Robbins to Fats Domino or Eddie Cochrans en-US 60s-era music coming through the speakers.en-US But while it has all the style and character en-US of a place that was time-warped out of 1950s en-US or 60s America, the proof in the pudding is en-US the food. For those who want breakfast, the en-US eggs were as fresh as if they had just come en-US out of the coop. The scrambled eggs were en-US fluffy and cooked to perfection and the en-US bacon was crispy and flavorful. Meanwhile, en-US the pancakes were off the charts and both en-US fluffy and filling. A very sound value for the en-US price.en-US Meanwhile, the place is clean as a whistle en-US and just like it used to be you can watch en-US the excellent cooks creating their masteren-US -en-US pieces from the front-section seats. It cannot en-US be said too many times how good the burger en-US was, and the bun was toasted to perfection en-US and the fries were delightful. The side vegetaen-US -en-US bles were so fresh it was like they were just en-US picked and one other thing must be said en-US about the burger: It is massive. Youre not en-US eating it with one hand thats for sure and en-US even the bun had that little something extra. en-US The fries were crispy and complement the en-US burger magnificently.en-US The dinner special which on this occaen-US -en-US sion was a bucket with fish n chips had en-US better flavor than anything within the area en-US code Ive tried recently and the sides were en-US spectacular. en-US The menu is packed with options, and as en-US they came out of the kitchen the scent was en-US hunger-inducing. From the specialty en-US omelettes of which there are six on the list en-US to the pancakes and waffles and French en-US toast and crepes, the food did not last long en-US on the customers plates. There also is a en-US healthy helping of eggs and biscuits to choose en-US from if you need something to stick to your en-US ribs.en-US Sweeties Diner all-in-all is one en-US astoundingly good greasy spoon, although en-US nothing is greasy. en-US 16 en-USTREASURE COAST The music was en-US only part of the story at the second en-US Okeechobee Music Festival, March 2-5. en-US Thanks to the generosity of festival organizen-US -en-US ers and attendees, the Treasure Coast Food en-US Bank will feed more hungry people in the en-US community.en-US Soundslinger, the festival production en-US company that owns the 600-acre en-US Okeechobee parcel called Sunshine Grove, en-US has made a concerted effort to green the en-US festivalby partnering with nonprofit orgaen-US -en-US nizations. For the Treasure Coast Food en-US Bank, based in Fort Pierce, the festival has en-US been entirely positive.en-US Last year, Soundslinger reached out to en-US us, and we received approximately $30,000 en-US from the festival, TCFB President and CEO en-US Judy Cruz told Hometown News. That was en-US very unexpected and significant, consideren-US -en-US ing it was a first time event. We were thrilled en-US to receive that support. The festival had a en-US wonderful impact in the community.en-US The community engagement efforts were en-US led by New York-based HeadCount, whose en-US primary focus is registering young music en-US fans to vote. As a nod to the Bob Dylan song en-US Desolation Row, the group set up Participaen-US -en-US tion Row, a village of education and activen-US -en-US ism strategically situated between the festien-US-en-US vals daytime fun zone and the main stages.en-US We got such a great response at en-US Okeechobee last year, so this year we wanted en-US to step things up, said HeadCounts execuen-US-en-US tive director Andy Bernstein. Registering en-US to vote is the first step in being an active citen-US -en-US izen, and now fans will be able to take more en-US steps with all the different organizations.en-US Ms. Cruz of the Treasure Coast Food en-US Bank said that the festival organizers goals en-US dovetailed nicely with TCFBs own mission.en-US They really wanted to spotlight food en-US insecurity and folks who are struggling to en-US make ends meet, said Ms. Cruz. They had en-US approached us with expanded ideas includen-US -en-US ing food recovery from the vendors on site, en-US food rescue. They have a farmers market on en-US site and wanted to ensure that nothing en-US would go to waste, that all the food that the en-US vendors and farmers market were bringing en-US in would be used to help people that are en-US food insecure.en-US The festival promoted local restaurants, en-US and the on-site farmers market managed by en-US a local co-op encouraged participants to en-US enjoy fresh local produce. Soundslinger en-US plans to move the festival closer each year to en-US a goal of being a carbon neutral event utilizen-US -en-US ing as many biodegradable, re-purposed, en-US recycled and sustainable materials as possien-US -en-US ble. en-US The festival is an extraordinary opportuen-US -en-US nity to raise awareness among event goers, en-USTreasure Coast benefits from Okeechobee en-US Music Festival Staff photo by Mike Winikoff en-USTreasure Coast Food Bank reps (left to right) Eric Metcalf, Director of en-US Communications Triana Romero, Shirley Rion, and Mike Rion. Food en-US that can be frozen will be brought back to en-US the warehouse for redistribution at a later en-US date.en-US Its a great opportunity to ensure that en-US nothing goes into landfills, to help make it a en-US green event. Our part is to make sure that en-US no food will go to waste, and to spotlight the en-US needs of folks who are trying to sustain their en-US families. Were spotlighting poverty as a en-US whole and the working poor.en-US Ms. Cruz said the promoters were en-US extremely supportive of TCFB, and the en-US community as a whole, and really worked en-US hard to ensure that the organizations that en-US would benefit this year would serve the en-US local community.en-US HeadCounts Mr. Bernstein added Paren-US -en-US ticipation Row is a place where festival en-US attendees can meet representatives from en-US each nonprofit, take positive actions that en-US support their missions, and enter a free en-US drawing for a guitar signed by festival headen-US -en-US liners. The nonprofits will receive proceeds en-US from a VIP signed memorabilia auction.en-US Well see afterword the impact festival en-US goers will have on hunger relief efforts along en-US the Treasure Coast, said Ms. Cruz. For en-US every dollar that the food bank raises, were en-US able to provide eight meals into the commuen-US -en-US nity. So if we receive $10,000, thats 80,000 en-US meals. If we receive $30,000 like last year, en-US thats 240,000 meals.en-US Im amazed at how kind and considerate en-US they are, Ms. Cruz said of the festival orgaen-US -en-US nizers. More companies need to be like en-US that. They are big believers in supporting en-US the community that theyre in, and making en-US a positive impact, and doing everything that en-US they can to create awareness. Its amazing en-US that an organization of this scale, that puts en-US on an event with 40,000 people, has that en-US much compassion, interest and time to en-US invest in the local community. They worked en-US for months with us to see what else they en-US could do to help.en-US Other organizations that focus on issues en-US such as health care and domestic abuse kept en-US the attendees engaged. The first thousand en-US fans who completed actions with any three en-US nonprofit organizations received a pin that en-US featured the Okeechobee festivals logo in en-US front of a sun, a nod to the events solar en-US energy projects including sun-powered cell en-US phone charging stations.en-US While the overall economic impact of the en-US festival has not yet been calculated, last en-US years festival created several hundred local en-US jobs, sold out every hotel room in a 2-hour en-US radius, and had a total economic impact of en-US $16.4 million, with $1.5 million in state and en-US local taxes generated by the festival.en-US Not to be forgotten of course is the music. en-US Performances by Kings of Leon, Usher with en-US the Roots, The Lumineers, George Clinton en-US and Parliament Funkadelic, The Revivalists, en-US Waka Flocka Flame, and 100 other acts on en-US five stages kept young and old alike dancing en-US round-the-clock for three and a half straight en-US days.en-US For more information about Treasure en-US Coast Food Bank, including volunteer and en-US donation opportunities, visit en-US www.StopHunen-US-en-US en-US or call (772) 446-1744. en-US 17 en-USFewer rules for golf starting in 2019 en-USEen-USvery couple of years, the United States en-US Golf Association and the Royal and en-US Ancient, get together to tweak the en-US Rules of Golf. The idea is to not only en-US protect the game of golf from technology en-US that would make skill less meaningful than en-US buying the latest equipment, but to make en-US things easier for the layman to understand. en-US Currently there are 34 rules in the book. en-US While it doesnt sound like a lot for a game en-US hundreds and hundreds of years old, it is far en-US more than the average, recreational golfer en-US cares or tends to pay attention to. en-US Just before the end of February, the en-US USGA and the R&A announced that their en-US five-year-long modernization of the Rules en-US of Golf is finally complete. Most of the rules en-US have been streamlined with common-sense en-US changes that will make them easier to en-US understand and more fair. en-US Under the proposed changes, the rules en-US will be reduced to 24. The rules will become en-US a more reasonable representation of the en-US evolved game that we play now. Since these en-US changes are proposed it is not written in en-US stone that all of them will be implemented en-US or not face further tweaking. The best part en-US is that for the next six months, the USGA en-US and R&A will accept feedback on the en-US changes from golfers everywhere, no matter en-US their skill level or stature in the game. en-US After listening to golfers who send in en-US their feelings on the revised rules, a final en-US revised code of rules will be released next en-US spring. The new code will then go into en-US effect on Jan. 1, 2019. en-US There are a few notable changes to how en-US the game will be played under the proposed en-US code. en-US There is no longer a penalty for accidenen-US -en-US tally moving your ball while searching for en-US it, or for accidentally moving your ball or en-US marker on the green. en-US No more penalty stroke if your ball, en-US when in motion, accidentally strikes you. en-US Such as a bounce off a tree or off the face of en-US a bunker. en-US When you must take a drop, you can en-US drop the ball from as close to the ground as en-US an inch. This should end having to re-drop en-US when the ball bounces or rolls too far from en-US the spot where it landed. en-US Your ball is deemed lost after just a en-US three-minute search, compered to the en-US current five. en-US No more penalties if your ball is played en-US from the green and hits an unattended en-US flagstick in the hole. en-US You may repair almost all damage on the en-US green. This includes spike marks and en-US animal damage. You are still prohibited en-US from building a trough for your ball to en-US follow. en-US Red and yellow stakes may now cover en-US areas such as desert, jungle, or lava fields in en-US addition to water. en-US There will no longer be a penalty if you en-US touch or move a loose impediment or touch en-US the ground with your hand or club in a en-US penalty area. You are only prohibited from en-US touching the sand with your hand or club en-US to determine its condition or with your club en-US in the area right in front of or behind the en-US ball, in making a practice swing or in en-US making the backswing of your stroke. en-US If you are ready to play and another en-US golfer is farther from the hole, but not ready en-US to hit, you may proceed and take your en-US stroke. Ready golf. I love it! en-US Your caddie is not allowed to stand on a en-US line behind you from the time you begin to en-US take your stance until you have completed en-US your stroke. This one should speed up play en-US on the LPGA Tour. en-US These are all fine and good, but I feel en-US they one and left one well-enough alone. en-US Many golfers want to eliminate the stroke en-US and distance penalty for out-of-bounds. I en-US disagree. If you hit the ball off the golf en-US course, what is fair in you getting the same en-US penalty as someone who hit the ball into en-US the trees or pond next to the fairway? No en-US change to this rule, and I agree. en-US I would love to see where fairway divots en-US can be declared ground under repair. en-US After all, if the area was the size of a bed not en-US just a few inches, it would be declared thus.
