Abstract:
Biophilic design, the process of incorporating natural forms, colors, and processes, has become increasing popular in the recent years to counteract the lack of human interaction with nature seen in trends such as urbanization. Biophilia enhances human-nature relationships and in turn increases the health and well-being of its building occupants. This honor portfolio features one project that uses biophilic design through its entire design process. Located in Charleston, South Carolina, this project, Port Oak, uses the city's shipping port and the architects love for nature to foster a place-based relationship between the building occupants and the surrounding city. This design offers a dynamic duality that fuses together orthogonal and organic features and evokes curiosity in these spaces. Other design elements include the use of repetition, found in nature and shipping ports, through architectural elements, materials, and colors. Actual and conceptual elements derived from the initial concept are used throughout these spaces to create a unique hotel experience for the business class to enjoy. A natural colored sculptural wall adjacent to a deconstructed shipping container used for seating, reinforces this branding, and invites guests to explore other features of this hotel. Other shipping container and natural elements are used throughout the hotel to tie all spaces together. ( en )
