Abstract:
I have learned the power that design has to not only make things more beautiful, but also to engage, inform, educate, and ultimately create greater social awareness. My research topics and interests focus on areas of social good, justice, diversity, representation, and leadership in design. Knowing the power design can exert on individuals, communities, and even society, I believe in my ability and responsibility to have a socially conscious design practice. With an awareness of the power of design, and the power of my own voice and privilege, I am motivated by the sense of urgency to learn how to combine these to move beyond simply making something visually and aesthetically pleasing as the sole purpose, but rather to solve a problem, contribute to a better quality of life, and ultimately create greater social change. I attempt to focus my creative energy and design work towards improving individual and societal consciousness, views, and understanding of complex issues. This involves working towards solutions to these many complex issues that range from improving equity and access to local and fresh foods, social biases and discrimination towards LGBTQ communities, and the underrepresentation of minorities in many areas, including design. These themes are represented in many of the en-US projects and works you will see throughout this portfolio. en-US Each project begins with identifying a problem or lack of in a en-US community, and using design thinking and research to work en-US through creative solutions to these issues.

en-USIssue 1en-USOtheren-USOtheren-US is an ongoing project where each publication focuses on en-US on one of the many different aspects that make up an en-US individuals Identity. en-US I have always been very interested in how my American and en-US Brazilian cultures intersect and influence my identity. Issue one en-US focuses on culture, in hopes to inspire and celebrate diversity. en-US I wanted to create a platform in which people who share the en-US common experience of trying to understand their mixed cultures en-US can have a space to share their experiences, feelings, and en-US thoughts on their identities. Particularly those who identify with en-US being in the middle of cultures, who may feel like they dont en-US identify with one or the other and find themselves in a unique en-US middle space where one may feel inbetween. en-USOtheren-USIssue 2en-USIn the second issue of en-USOtheren-US, I continue to explore the many en-US aspects that make up our identities, focusing on gender, en-US sexuality, and how we present ourselves in everyday life. I en-US sought out individuals who consider themselves a part of the en-US LGBTQ community. Specifically, I found that those who identify en-US with bisexuality, pansexuality, and gender fluidity embody the en-US message of en-USOtheren-US. As these are identities that many times are en-US considered to be in the middle of many spaces. In the middle of en-US gay and straight, man and woman, visible and invisible, accepted en-US or rejected. en-USThe Radical Acten-USThe challenge for this assignment was to create a project based en-US on something that is often overlooked. I wanted to focus on the en-US act of hand holding, as it may seem like such a small action, en-US but it can be a radical act for many people from marginalized en-US communities. The person on the left remains the same, while en-US the person on the right changes. This is to talk about peoples en-US changing perceptions and judgements depending on whos en-US hand they are holding. With this project, I am hoping to confront en-US these biases by first normalizing the act of hand holding, then en-US shocking the viewer with the qoutes/facts below. What are the en-US dierences/similarities between the two?en-US To me, horticulture falls within the sphere of agriculture. en-US Agriculture involves the whole production of growing en-US crops and/ or raising livestock, while horticulture cares en-US about the art aspect of production and includes not only en-US crops, but all types of plants and ornamentals.en-US What would you call yourself or identify with?en-US I typically use both terms interchangeably, but I would en-US say that I am more of a horticulturist. I generally tell en-US people Im studying agriculture though, in case they en-US dont know what horticulture is.en-US How did you get into the eld?en-US So actually my family owns a large produce company en-US in south Florida. And although I was never involved en-US with the farms operations, it inspired me to want to en-US learn more about agriculture. My grandpa is a very hard en-US working farmer and I value his dedication and hard work en-US to the company.en-US What experience do you have in theen-US Agriculture eld?en-US I have experience working in a horticulture lab at UF that en-US studies nutrient content in potatoes. I have also worked en-US for a very small farming operation in Bualo, NY growing en-US a variety of vegetables and herbs. And my most recent en-US experience has involved me researching techniques for en-US an integrated pest management (IPM) plan for a UF farm.en-US What would you say are your daily/weekly tasks in this en-US eld?en-US Typical daily tasks while working on a farm include en-US irrigating, weeding, hoeing, fertilizing, planting, and en-US monitoringen-US Out of those, what do you nd to be the most en-US important and/or interesting? en-US I think that one of the most important is denitely en-US weeding. While of course plants need water to develop en-US and survive, taking appropriate measures to eliminate en-US weed species is crucial for the growth of crops. By letting en-US weeds mature in a eld, there is a greater chance that en-US they will reproduce and send new weed seeds across en-US the eld.en-US Do you think shadowing you as a way for me to en-US understand what you do better?en-US Yes, in agriculture, shadowing or learning from en-US experience is denitely the best way for someone to get en-US educated on the topic. Its much easier to go outside and en-US show someone what farming is all about as oppose to en-US explaining it to them.en-US What would you say is a common misconception about en-US what you do?en-US People think that growing food is easy, but it certainly is en-US not. There is a whole science behind crop production, its en-US not simply about planting a seed and giving it adequate en-US water and sunlight. There are many elements that aect en-US crop growth and those change when you grow dierent en-US plants. Agriculture involves very complicated integrated en-US systems.en-US If you could educate people on a common stereotype/en-US misconception or just something they generally dont/en-US wouldnt know, what would it be/what would you say?en-US I would educate people on the words organic and en-US natural. Just because a food item says that it is natural en-US on the front, does not mean that it is organic or even en-US healthy. And just because a food is labeled organic, it en-US does not mean that it is superior to the same food that is en-US not organically produced. I think that people try to look en-US for these words that they think are good for them without en-US actually knowing what they mean or stand for.en-US What do you grow?en-US In the past, I have grown a variety of vegetable crops en-US such as tomatoes, peppers, green beans, squash, en-US lettuce, and radish. I have also grown owers like en-US zinnias, sunowers, and nasturtium.en-US What are your plans for the future?en-US As of right now, I do not know where I will be after en-US graduation, but I hope to either get my Masters or get en-US an industry job working for a large farming company, like en-US Driscolls or Monsanto.en-US Do you farm organic/natural? How do you feel about en-US pesticides/GMOs?en-US I would like to say that I farm sustainably, which is kind en-US of in between organic and conventional farming. I try en-US to use methods that are environmentally friendly while en-US also trying to improve the quality of my crops. I think en-US that pesticides are possibly needed in some agricultural en-US productions, but for the most part they should be used to en-US a bare minimum since they are caustic chemicals. I also en-US believe in the power and science of GMOsen-US What places do you think are important to farmers or en-US to you as a farmer?en-US I think farmers markets are an important feature en-US for farmers and the community. They allow farmers en-US to become engaged with citizens and vice versa. en-US Community members can nd the best, most fresh en-US produce that is worth the price. And farmers can get en-US input from people on what they like best about the en-US produce or what they would like to see dierent in the en-US future.en-US Are there ways the town supports or hinders your en-US ability to farm?en-US In Gainesville, I cant really think of any ways that the en-US town hinders the ability to farm. In terms of support en-US though, I would say that there are people in the en-US community who want to help out and volunteer with en-US simple farming tasks like weeding or hoeing. en-US What issues are you passionate about?en-US Im passionate about growing healthy and bountiful food en-US for the community. I believe that fresh foods should be en-US locally sourced and not sold by the truckloads at large en-US supermarkets. I am also a strong advocate for ghting en-US food insecurity in communities that rank high in poverty. en-US What do you wish more people knew or cared about?en-US I really do wish that people knew more about the actual en-US facts of GMOs and not just the misconceptions that en-US are seen on social media. There are plenty of years of en-US research to show that they are not harmful. en-US*I interviewed Courtney Miller, a 21 year old en-US Horticulture major at the University of Florida. en-US She is the Secretary for the University of en-US Floridas Campus Kitchens, and a Garden en-US Assistant for the Field and Fork Pantry on en-US campus.

Field en-USobservations en-USThrough my initial interviews and en-US shadowing my interviewee I observed the en-US amount of work it really takes to be in the en-US eld. First and foremost, it is very physically en-US demanding and there is a lot of labor that en-US goes in to farming and gardening. Of course en-US we may know this, but I felt that perhaps the en-US amount is underestimated. en-US I also noticed that the opportunities in the en-US eld are underestimated by many as well. en-US Although it may seem that they are just en-US farmers or just gardeners there are en-US actually an endless number of opportunities en-US and job titles in the eld of horticulture. en-US It also seems to be unclear to many the en-US dierences between agriculture and en-US horticulture. Because of this, many see it as en-US the same discipline.en-US There are many misconceptions in the en-US eld in regards to topics such as organic, en-US natural, and sustainable. Many consumers en-US are uneducated to what these terms really en-US mean. Many people in the eld dedicate en-US themselves to the cause of educating en-US people on such topics. It seems that en-US individuals choose these such topics en-US to focus on, and in turn become really en-US passionate about the cause. This then en-US informs and guides the work that they do.

en-USAlthough there were many successful aspects en-US of Part 1, when I reect back on what I dont en-US feel worked I think back to the frustrations en-US that arose as I was creating the persona. en-US Because personas are a consolidation of en-US several users based on behavior patterns en-US and commonalities, I feel more interviews en-US and personal accounts would have been en-US necessary to create a more realized persona. en-US More time would have been needed to collect en-US more real user information.en-US After reecting on what I feel was successful, en-US as well as the not so successful parts, I must en-US think about the aspects that I would like to en-US improve upon in the future. Previous to this, en-US I had not been introduced to the world of en-US design centered research data. Now that I en-US have, I realize how much there is to learn en-US in this area and I would like to improve my en-US research skills as I have become more aware en-US of the many methods of design that can be en-US used to better understand and empathize with en-US people. I feel this is a very important addition en-US to my process as a designer because it en-US creates more meaningful and well though out en-US products and design solutions. en-US As I reect on the process of Part 1, I think en-US about the steps taken to conduct research. en-US Looking back, I see that the research was en-US extremely critical in accumulating enough en-US information to synthesize in to the nal poster en-US in Part 1. Each step of the process informed en-US the next. For example, the concept map aided en-US in creating questions for the interviewee. en-US The interview questions and answers helped en-US inform the persona. Shadowing and observing en-US resulted in photos that were used in the en-US poster and overall helped generate a better en-US understanding of the community as a whole. en-US Many times as designers, we are given en-US projects and assignments with no background en-US knowledge on what or whom we are en-US designing for. The process in Part 1 showed en-US me rst hand how important research and the en-US ability to back up the visual of a design with en-US actual information and experience can be to en-US the end result of a project. This information en-US adds another level to the design solution, in en-US the form of credibility and awareness. en-USAnother one of my ndings concerns post en-US harvesting problems and all the issues that en-US come along with shipping our food across en-US long distances. The solution to this would be en-US to have more locally grown and sourced food en-US by creating a farmers market, local store, or en-US CSA (community supported agriculture). The en-US design solution is to come up with the branding en-US for whatever that market or store would be. In en-US order to create a more complex design solution, en-US I will combine these two ndings and solutions en-US together. en-US One of my rst ndings was that a large en-US percentage of people do not know or learn the en-US knowledge and skills necessary to grow their en-US own food anymore, we leave it up to farmers. en-US There is an opportunity in this nding to teach en-US people how to grow their own food. If people en-US are aware that it is easy and possible in their en-US own home they will be more likely to get in en-US to the practice of growing their own food or en-US garden at home. The strategy is to create a en-US kit that would include everything necessary en-US to grow your own food at home. en-USI am extremely happy with my design solution en-US where I created a local farmers market and en-US then designed a toolkit for customers of the en-US farmers market that provides everything you en-US would need to be able to grow edible and/or en-US ornamental plants at home. Through this idea en-US I was tackling several problems I identied en-US within the community, and even creating en-US something that would live on past the actual en-US products. en-US An aspect of the outcome that I would like to en-US improve upon is moving the design solution en-US from a locally based solution to one that en-US reaches a larger number of people. Although en-US this project is focused on the local horticulture en-US community of Gainesville, I believe these same en-US ideas can be applied to a much more broad en-US area as many of the problems are not just local en-US but even national. en-US Similar to Part 1, there was also a set of en-US methods in Part 2 that had to occur before en-US coming to the nal design outcome. The main en-US method used was the matrix, where I listed en-US ndings from within my community that were en-US identied as problems. For each nding, I had en-US to identify an opportunity to x the problem, en-US the strategy that would be used to do so and en-US nally the overall design solution. en-US Many artists and designers are faced with the en-US desire to stick with their rst idea. Although en-US I will not rule out that it can be, we all know en-US the rst idea isnt always the best one. What I en-US found successful about this exercise is the fact en-US that I had to list as many ndings and solutions en-US as I could. I then could not ignore that some of en-US the solutions I came up with were better than en-US others. I also then had to face the question of en-US which nding and solution would make the en-US most sense to my community and be the most en-US intentional. The matrix was very successful en-US in forcing me to think through each idea and en-US then guiding me to the right solution. This app intends to aid gardeners and/en-US or food enthusiasts of any skill level to track en-US their progress in the garden as well as make en-US information, instructions, tutorials, and advice en-US easily accessible. en-US My Friends Gardening App is an app produced en-US by My Friends Farmers Market. The app en-US includes several features including a camera, en-US photo, album, community feed, calendar, and en-US plant library. All of these features work together en-US to provide a personal and customizable en-US experience that helps track the users progress. en-US This app can be used for tracking progress in en-US your garden, learning how and when to plant en-US ornamental and edible plants, and connecting en-US with others in the community. en-US Through My Friends research, they discovered en-US several problems within the community that en-US they wanted to solve through an interactive app. en-US The matrix once again helped me to weed out en-US and identify the best digital solution. From there, en-US I began to form the idea for a phone application, en-US thinking about what its use was, what would be en-US included, how all these things connected, and en-US how this would help the users lives. en-US The issue they are most concerned with is that en-US a large percentage of people dont know or en-US learn the knowledge and skills necessary to en-US grow their own food. Its hard for her to en-US keep up with all 3 as she gets confused in trying to en-US remember what is planted and growing in each place. en-US This causes her to get frustrated and doesnt end up en-US spending time on her personal farming/gardening at en-US home. She has tried dierent methods like making en-US lists of what is planted where, taking photos to keep en-US track, and making an schedule/calendar. She has also en-US experimented with several apps to help accomplish the en-US same goals, but because these are all separate, Sarah en-US loses track of them quickly and eventually gives up on en-US updating and tracking. This makes her discouraged en-US because she cant keep up with the independent en-US projects she desires to complete. en-US Sarah nds an app that seems to combine all of en-US these tasks in to one place. The app includes a en-US progress tracker and photo album, a plant library and en-US instructions, a calendar/schedule, notications, and a en-US community feed. Sarah sets the notications to pop up en-US at the time that she en-USgets home from work and school en-US everyday. en-USThis way, she is reminded as soon as she en-US is free of what needs to be done to which plant. On en-US a good day, where she is motivated to work on her en-US personal garden, she opens the notication, goes to en-US the garden and completes the task. If it is a plant she en-US is less familiar with, shell follow along with the plant en-US library/instructions tool to make sure she is doing en-US everything correctly. She then uses the photo and en-US progress tracking tool to take a photo of that plant and en-US make a note of what was done at that day and time. en-US She goes over to the calendar and scheduling tool en-US to make sure her photo and notes showed up in the en-US correct day on the schedule, and double check if any en-US of her other plants need attention. Once all her tasks en-US in the garden for that day are complete, she goes to en-US the community feed tool to check her photo from that en-US day, as well as casually scrolling through other peoples en-US posts. en-US On a bad day, where she is not feeling very motivated en-US to keep up with her garden and plants, she will check en-US her notications and complete tasks if absolutely en-US necessary. Plants are very frost sensitive, so keep plants protected in case of a late cold spell. Basil likes rich, moist, but well-drained soil with a pH of 6 to 7. en-USThrough the user testing of my paper en-US prototypes I saw for the rst time how the en-US user would actually interact with the app. en-US Rather than assuming how others would en-US interact with it, or just basing it o of my en-US own interaction. I discovered areas that en-US were confusing to the user and noted the en-US suggestions they gave. en-US Some of the suggestions included thinking en-US through the Community Feed feature en-US in terms of who will be on the feed and en-US how the user will connect with others on en-US the feed. Is it their Facebook friends? Is it en-US people in their general area or location? This en-US made me think through these options and en-US decide what makes the most sense for this en-US particular application. en-US Another suggestion referred to the Plant en-US Library feature and how the Library is en-US organized. The user suggested I narrow it en-US down in to sections. For example, having en-US an all library and a personal library. The en-US personal library shows the plants the user en-US has photographed. planted or bookmarked, en-US and the all library shows the whole database en-US of plants.en-US Now that I had my design solution and en-US physical product, the next step was to think en-US of a digital solution to the same nding. The en-US matrix once again helped me to weed out en-US and identify the best digital solution. From en-US there, I began to form the idea for a phone en-US application, thinking about what its use en-US was, what would be included, how all these en-US things connected, and how this would help en-US the users lives. en-US What I feel was successful in putting all en-US these questions in to perspective was en-US the creation of a narrative scenario. The en-US narrative scenario attempts to create a en-US very detailed account of what the users en-US experience is really like. This was helpful en-US in creating an empathetic view of the users en-US experience. I was able to visualize a reality en-US in which a user would really need this en-US application, for what exact reasons they en-US would need it, and in what ways they were en-US likely to use it. This narrative provided a en-US real person and idea that could fuel the en-US information I needed to inform the behavior en-US map and storyboard. The behavior map was en-US imperative in moving towards designing en-US the screens for the app, as it provided the en-US steps and touch points that I would need to en-US actually begin designing. en-USSelf en-US reflection en-US of part 3 en-USThe paper prototypes guided me in planning en-US out the actions of the app in a logical en-US succession before actually beginning to en-US design them in the computer. en en-US I would like to improve upon my user en-US testing skills and take more feedback in to en-US consideration. At this point in the process, en-US I began to really consider and understand en-US how critical design thinking, methods, and en-US research are to the full realization of a en-US project. en-US Once again, the methods and processes en-US that occurred before the actual design were en-US essential to the nal design solution. Since en-US creating a whole system for a user is very en-US complex, I could not have just jumped in en-US to it. If I had, it could have been a beautiful en-US design, but it would be without substance en-US and intention. The processes in Part 3 en-US taught me about the user experience and en-US all the things that must be considered when en-US designing a service for real life users.
