Abstract:
During the semester of Fall 2018, I found out that the Baybayin Script existed. I heard this from a story about Kristian Kabuay, someone who is trying to revive Baybayin. Baybayin was the Filipinos' original form of writing until the script was completely wiped out somewhere in the middle of the Spanish reign. I am studying graphic design because I first loved typography. My knowledge and interest on Roman letters/the modern English alphabet would have surely been affected if I grew up with Baybayin instead. I've studied every letter of the Roman alphabet's anatomy and it's time that I do the same for Baybayin. Last semester, I started my Baybayin typeface as an answer to, "What if we never lost the Baybayin Script?" Personally, I would have studied each part of the letters' anatomy, and the best way to do that was to make my own typeface. For my thesis, I want to extend this project by improving and breaking down the letters I created. I want to experiment with both old and modern ways of printing–woodblock and 3d–and ultimately compile them into a digital collection. I will then further expand the project with 3d printing and use the material printed as a template, or a cookie cutter, for experimentation on various elements–primarily food. This is to give a different light on the letters in forms that they have never been seen before. ( en )

Ive always wanted to create my own typeface (of the English alphabet) because of my love for typography, but that was a goal that I had when my own Baybayin typeface in order to reach that goal instead of the English alphabet. I created two, a sans-serif and a modern serif/didone. Something about accomplishing these typefaces felt right to me. Intent 10 INTENT | Specimen Booklet 1

I believe I needed a system to create a functioning typeface. I decided to for the formation of each letter. A logo grid is a tool used to help create shapes with geometric harmony in the process of building a logo; but with individual letters, in my case. I created Pinanggalingan: Baybayin mediums that have been developed after Baybayins time.Concept & Solution 16 CONCEPT & SOLUTION | Specimen Booklet 2
