3 CONGRATULATIONS en-US we have passed the half-way en-US mark of our program year. Your mid-year reports en-US were enjoyable to read and I am en-USVERYen-US proud of your en-US accomplishments. Dont slack now, keep up the fantastic en-US and impressive work! en-US A little reminder note regarding membership. If you en-US havent paid your 2018 dues, you are now considered en-US not in good standing. If you are an ocer, you could en-US potentially lose your position. Thinking of raising your en-US dues for 2019? Please make sure your Constitution & en-US Bylaws and Standing Rules are updated to match. These en-US will need to be current by the end of February, as we en-US will be mailing your Unit Dues forms to update your en-US information to National. en-US Fundraising is a large part of our activities. Without en-US which we would not be able to support our Units, ALA en-US Programs, Veterans, Communities and Charities. It is also en-US a big responsibility and takes many volunteers to be en-US successful. District Presidents cannot have fundraisers, en-US however if a District works together with the Legion, the en-US funds can be deposited and disbursed from the District en-US Legion checking account. For example, if a District en-US sponsors a Golf Tournament to raise funds for Boys and en-US Girls State (or K9s for Warriors or Special Olympics or en-US Project VetRelief you get the idea) then the funds are en-US collected and deposited in the District Legion account en-US and proceeds are disbursed with a District Legion en-US check from that account. The District President, District en-US Commander and District SAL Commander should be en-US communicating with each other throughout the event en-US to ensure the success and reporting back to their en-US members thereof. Through The American Legion Family en-US we can make a substantial dierence and have fun en-US making memories!en-US Please remember if your Fundraising (T-Shirts, Calendars, en-US Mugs etc.) involves the use of the ALA Logo or Name, en-US either of which MUST be pre-authorized by National en-US through Department. Both ALA Logo and Name are en-US registered trademarks. We are aware this has recently en-US happened and consequences are pending. We LOVE en-US your creative ideas and ask that you just follow the en-US simple guidelines set forth by National. Ultimately, we are en-US maintaining a positive branding for our Organization and en-US leaving a positive impression from our eorts for Making en-US a Dierence.en-US I have continued my District visits and 4th District en-US President Rebecca Kelly kept me busy with her scheduled en-US agenda. We were joined en-US by Sherry Wingard who en-US traveled the day as well. en-US We started o with a en-US meeting in Inverness, Unit en-US 77. Although they are a en-US small Unit and have had several members recovering en-US from medical issues and illness, they have supported en-US the Post with remodeling (they have gone non-smoking) en-US as well as planning for upcoming events. Good Luck en-US with the Yard Sale they will oer a coee and bake-sale en-US table with applications at the ready. Next, we were met en-US by several members at Crystal River Unit 155. We had a en-US professional photographer, Larry White, capturing the en-US event Thanks Larry! President Esther and Barb gave a en-US tour of the Post and the story behind their wall honoring en-US the Four Chaplains. We shared stories about our dogs en-US and the K9s for Warriors program. We learned President en-US Rebecca is fostering a dog, Soldier Girl. I also had the en-US pleasure of meeting their youngest Jr member, Leila. en-US She is such a charm and has a terric twirl! en-US From this point we car-pooled, our journey took us to en-US Unit 237 Beverly Hills where we were greeted with an en-US outside reception from all members of the Legion Family en-US (and it was very chilly that morning). I had the distinct en-US honor of Installing their new President, Julie. Their Post en-US has added a large room as their smoking lounge with en-US a pool table and ample storage space quite pleasant. en-US They are planning to expand with a Tiki Bar area, en-US Horseshoe pits and Motorcycle parking in the back yard. en-US Thank You for the coee and snacks it was a lovely visit! en-US O to Bronson Unit 236 where we had a most delicious en-US homemade lunch Chicken Soup and Tuna Salad. en-US We also had the company of members from Unit 230 en-US Hawthorne President Mary and the members have been en-US very busy sewing (love the microwave hot bowl pad). en-US Then, President Rebecca comes out with her new Rabbit en-US Hat absolutely adorable. I was presented with my Mary en-US Poppins USA hat Perfect t and NO, I am not giving it en-US up! It was special to visit with the members and those en-US visiting the Post. en-US We had an appointment to tour the Fisher House en-US in Gainesville. Our guide was very gracious, full of en-US knowledge and shared some stories giving us a new en-US appreciation to tube socks... They were full to capacity en-US so we were unable to see a room, but believe me the en-US house is beautiful! THE AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY, DEPARTMENT OF FLORIDA The Kaleidoscope VOLUME VII ISSUE 7 FEBRUARY 2018 M M M5 the items in which the Fisher Houses are in specic need. en-USDont forget your contributions through Department are en-US also GREATLY appreciated!! en-US Our last stop was Unit 16 Gainesville with a very warm en-US reception by several of the Unit members. They have en-US a great relationship with the Post Family. They have en-US arranged their walls Honoring Veterans with displays of en-US memorabilia, uniforms, banners, etc. The members are en-US all geared up for upcoming events and reveled in their en-US successes. As the time was late, we skipped dinner en-US to return President Rebecca and Sherry to their cars, en-US promising we would get togetheren-US The FL Legion College 2018 was held at Department en-US Headquarters January 11th -13th. This is the rst year en-US Auxiliary and Sons members were enrolled. After a en-US meet and greet of the 27 classmates and Department en-US Sta along with a tour of Department Headquarters, en-US we watched a movie about the History of the American en-US Legion very well done and available on Emblem Sales. en-US Past National Commander Clarence Hill gave us insight en-US to Department and National operations. The next two en-US days were jammed packed with presentations such en-US as Leadership and Team Building, Legion Programs en-US and Awards, Veterans Entitlements, Membership and en-US Reporting. Our class dinner at Old Glory Post was great en-US (Thank You Bunches!!) and the after dinner entertainment en-US created many friendships. We wrapped up with en-US Resolutions writing and critique. I am very proud of en-US my Certicate and completing the College with Bernie. en-US CONGRATULATIONS and Getting Er Done!!en-US There was no rest after graduation; Bernie and I nished en-US packing Jake, loaded the dogs in the truck and o to en-US 12th District for our ocial visit. Not bad timing, we were en-US greeted in the yard at Post 117 Palm Bay by several SAL en-US members. We set-up camp and then socialized for a en-US bit before hitting the sack. Bright and early Sunday en-US we headed down to Post/Unit 126 Jensen Beach to en-US begin our American Legion Family visitation. We were en-US joined by Education Chairman Charlotte Bass, Eastern en-US Area Commander Daryl Bass, 12th District Commander en-US Bruce Thurber and others on his sta. There were en-US several members to greet us; the Unit President Audrey en-US explained they would be attending a Celebration of en-US Life for their Poppy Chairman that afternoon. She was en-US very well known and will be sadly missed by many en-US throughout the District (so I would soon learn as we en-US traveled). Although our stay was brief, I enjoyed visiting en-US and talking about the activities they were doing for the en-US Auxiliary programs. We were joined by several American en-US Legion Riders from Chapters 129 and 318 who escorted en-US our parade to Post 355 Port St. Lucie. Although there en-US isnt a Unit presently, we had a lovely opportunity to chat en-US with the Legionnaires wives planting seeds Our next en-US stop was Post 318 Port St. Lucie where we were grandly en-US welcomed by the Post Commander and Unit President en-US Sue along with her Unit Ocers. Several other members en-US were also there, sooo, we took over the row of high-tops en-US for an all-together luncheon. What fun and sharing of en-US stories did we have!! Another Legion Family Home Post en-US involved in commonly successful activities!! Oh by the en-US way, go there for their homemade soup mmm-mmm en-US good!!!en-US Our Riders escort led the way to Post/Unit 358 White City en-US where the Unit had a lovely selection of mini desserts and en-US coee perfect timing! District President Shirley Fashano en-US joined us too. The Post looks small from the outside, en-US but wait till you enter! The back yard has been set up en-US for meetings and/or parties. Bikers Beware dangerous en-US sugar sand in the parking area! Unfortunately, one of en-US our escorts found out too late and got injured. He will be en-US okay after surgery. Please keep ALL of our Riders in your en-US thoughts for their rides.en-US We continued to Post/Unit 171 Fort Pierce where the en-US hall was being decorated for a Baby Shower. What Luck en-US we may possibly add (3) Sons and (2) Auxiliary new en-US members. We didnt stay too long and ended the day en-US at Post/Unit 40 Fort Pierce for dinner. What a surprise to en-US see Leadership Chairman Robin Burke, Edie and PDC Al en-US Porter as well as Maria and PC Felix Ayala. Unit President en-US Cyndie had a full crew in the Kitchen preparing our en-US wonderful dinner. The ocers from Unit 171 also joined en-US us and presented me a lovely bouquet of roses and en-US some were creatively made with currency how cool!!. en-US We all loved the simple dessert and commented we en-US would all like to try it at home. The evening ended with en-US a presentation for K9s for Warriors I was overwhelmed en-US and so proud of their eorts. Thank You One and ALL!! en-US The next morning we started at Post/Unit 39 Vero Beach en-US with Charlotte and President Shirley. With our cups of en-US coee in hand, Unit Vice President Connie gave us the en-US tour and shared some stories of activities. They are en-US working with a new President Christine, and the members en-US are very positive and lled with encouragement. Our en-US ALR escort had arrived (consisting of members from en-US Chapters 318, 117 and 39) and took us to Post/Unit 181 en-US in Vero Beach. After a detour for the local Martin Luther en-US King Jr. Parade, the Post home was empty. We gathered en-US for a photo and then o to see the Riverside Veterans en-US Memorial Park. We bundled up with our jackets to walk en-US around. The fountain with posted placards explaining en-US the Four Chaplains was impressive. After another en-US photo opportunity our escorts led us to Post/Unit 189 en-US Sebastian. We had a reception line greeting at the door en-US and everyone made us feel quite welcome. It was a en-US great pleasure to see Unit President Char and the Unit en-US members some on their work lunchbreak. We enjoyed en-US a delicious Philly-prime-rib-steak subs with fries that en-US hit-the-spot. The Legion Family totem pole at the door en-US was really cool and the Showcase with a piece of NY Twin en-US Towers was moving. en-USPRESIDENTS MESSAGE Continued from Page 3en-US en-US en-USContinued on Page 5en-US en-US
THE AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY, DEPARTMENT OF FLORIDA The Kaleidoscope VOLUME VII ISSUE 7 FEBRU ARY 2018 M M M5en-USTrying to keep to a schedule, the Riders took us to en-US Barefoot Bay G. C. where Post and Unit 366 hold their en-US meetings. I was excited to see Unit President Rhoda, a en-US long-time friend and Girls State sta member. Meeting en-US and visiting with the round-table of Unit members was en-US delightful. They are very busy making stued bears for en-US the children at Boggy Creek. I can still imagine their faces en-US when they popped open the box lled with stung. en-US Bernie got them all smiling in our group photo with his en-US ash photography skills. Thank You ladies keep up your en-US great work and positive attitudes!! en-US Our nal stop was back to Post/Unit 117 Palm Bay for en-US dinner. Again we were greeted with quite a gathering en-US of Legion Family members! The Unit has a cleverly en-US decorated Pigbank for Girls State which loved to gobble en-US everyones loose change. The homemade Hungarian en-US Goulash with cucumber salad was incredible. After eating en-US too much cake, the Unit members all gathered to present en-US me with a wonderful Plaque of Appreciation. They also en-US presented a donation for K9s for Warriors they have en-US all worked so very hard for this charity and I truly thank en-US everyone!!en-US Tuesday was a local day beginning at Post/Unit 394 in en-US Palm Bay. Thank You for the coee and doughnuts. We en-US had some extra time and had a lovely visit sharing stories en-US of accomplishments. They have completed remodeling en-US with a library doubling as Riders and Sons corners. They en-US also have quite a display for the POW/MIA table and en-US other memorabilia as you enter the building. As we were en-US leaving, 1st Vice Commander Diane Boland showed us en-US the Photo Album they have kept over the years of the en-US members great idea!en-US Our ALR escorts took us to Post/Unit 81 Melbourne en-US for lunch. We were greeted and warmly welcomed at en-US the door by all Post Legion Family members. The Unit en-US members were very busy preparing and setting up en-US the enormous buet and dessert table. Again, Bernie en-US managed a wonderful group photo on the staircase. en-US I love seeing all the displays and these walls did not en-US disappoint. The Hall has been beautifully redone and en-US the curio cabinets were a delight to behold. There were en-US two R/C planes hanging as well as a multitude of photos. en-US We had a square-about seating for lunch and it was quite en-US enjoyable to see everyone visiting with each other. Our en-US luncheon ended with a presentation to the Amigos en-US of Chapter 81 Legion Riders Tee-Shirts Thank You en-US Bunches!!en-US Were back on the road again, this time for 2 miles to en-US Post/Unit 191 Melbourne. What a pleasure to meet and en-US visit with Unit President Yvonne and Geraldine. Did you en-US know Yvonne is also the Vice Mayor how cool is that?? en-US Their Hall is dedicated to Margree McNeil. She had over en-USPRESIDENTS MESSAGE Continued from Page 4en-US en-US en-US50 years of service to Unit 191 and served as 12th District en-US President 1973-1974. There is another wall of history; en-US honoring and showing appreciation for those who have en-US served and dedicated their lives to our country and en-US organization. This Unit has many elderly members, and en-US they keep in the loop with a quarterly Newsletter from en-US President Yvonne. en-US This day ended at Post/Unit 163 Eau Gallie Melbourne. en-US We were a little early so had a chance to greet everyone en-US as they came in. It was a pleasure to see Dorothy Duke, en-US Dara Oliver and our 2nd Vice President Ann King-Smith en-US to name a few. Yvonne and Geraldine also came from en-US Unit 191.en-US Our dinner was delicious and ended perfectly with ice en-US cream and cake! Dorothy presented an envelope with a en-US donation for K9s for Warriors Thank You again from the en-US bottom of my heart!!en-US Up and at em Wednesday we traveled to Post/Unit 1 en-US Titusville for coee and breakfast buet wow did they en-US have lots of goodies!! We were greeted by several en-US members, coee in hand. President Carole was a en-US gracious hostess and it was a pleasure to see Past District en-US President Cathie recently returned from wintery travels. en-US Post Commander Gunner opened the oor for guest en-US speakers and President Carole presented a check for the en-US K9s for Warriors Thank You Bunches!!en-US Our ALR escort consisted of members from Chapters 1 en-US and 359, to Midway where Post 328 Christmas meets. en-US We were greeted by Baby, a beautiful 13 Python, and en-US Porkchops, a sweet Potbellied Pig. Baby had several en-US photos taken of her with people petting her. After my en-US turn, she practiced her Parseltongue and stretched out en-US full length. Her owner kept a watchful eye, but she made en-US no attempt to get away. Porkchops had a few grunting en-US comments as she was guided away from the gathering. en-US An airboat tour was ending and another going out, so we en-US went on our way to back to Titusville Post/Unit 359 Port en-US St. John for lunch. en-US We were greeted at the door by the Post Commander en-US and she made all of us feel right at home. Inside en-US there were many Legion Family members gathered en-US and we enjoyed visiting them all. The Post has a new en-US hall dedicated from the Auxiliary after many years of en-US fundraising and planning what a beautiful addition! en-US They were set up for a Celebration of Life later that en-US afternoon and by the photos of the member, she will en-US surely be missed and lling her shoes will be a task. en-US Before we left, I had the pleasure of reviewing photo en-US albums of previous Miss-ter American Legion Contest, en-US where the male members dress in similar fashion as Miss en-US America Pageant. It is all in good fun but I think there is en-US a hint of serious-ness in some of the fashion styles We en-US will post a yer so you can mark your calendars for this en-USContinued on Page 6en-US en-US
THE AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY, DEPARTMENT OF FLORIDA The Kaleidoscope VOLUME VII ISSUE 7 FEBRUARY 2018 M M M7 PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Continued from Page 5 en-US en-US en-USyears event March 24th. en-US en-US We ended our day at Post/Unit 22 in Cocoa. Several en-US members were there and we enjoyed a leisurely visit. en-US The Unit was organizing the dinner of Salad and Pizza, en-US making sure the timing was just right to serve piping hot en-US Pizza Pies. Thank You ladies, your eorts truly make a en-US dierence! en-US Our last ocial day started at the Brevard Veterans en-US Memorial Center in South Merritt Island, where Post 344 en-US has their meetings. WOW! If you ever have a chance, en-US please stop and visit. They have expanded the grounds en-US with plans to further build. The library is extensive but en-US the museum is two stories of history from the Civil War en-US to modern day. Tribute is made to all the Armed Forces en-US as well as a section of Women in Uniform and the NASA en-US program. They even oer a Scavenger Hunt sheet just to en-US give you a clue of some of the unique items they care for. en-US They are currently repainting and the numerous paintings en-US and wall hangings are being categorized for display. en-US Commander Steve Shuga had the rare opportunity to en-US speak with a WWII veteran who happened to be visiting. en-US Later, I had a chance to speak with him and his wife I en-US wish we had more time as their stories were captivating. en-US Our next stop was Challenger 7 Post/Unit 348 in Cape en-US Canaveral. Unit President Dorothy was a delight to visit en-US with as were several of her Unit members and ocers. en-US We enjoyed light snacks and a loaf of scrumptious en-US Strawberry Bread. Naturally I had to get the recipe. en-US Fortunately for me, Linda knew the recipe by heart en-US and wrote it down for me BIG Hugs to you!! I also en-US spent time with Betty as she is busy making plarn and en-US crocheting mats for Veterans she had (7) ready to go. en-US Again, keeping to the schedule, we were o to Post/Unit en-US 200 where lunch was provided by the members of the en-US SALAwesome Penne with Meatballs and Sausage served en-US with Garlic Bread.en-US en en-US I enjoyed visiting with the members albeit briey, as the en-US Bingo was about to get underway. en-US Bernie and I headed back to break camp and move en-US north from Palm Bay to Cocoa for the American Legion en-US Riders Summit, January 18-20. We re-set camp at Joys en-US RV Park. The owner was curious about the American en-US Legion and had seen a group of the Riders on Hwy 95. en-US We had other campers stop and ask what we were all en-US about after seeing the Auxiliary vehicle and Bernies en-US truck with the magnetic signs and logos. Fortunately, we en-US were prepared with applications and provided locations en-US of nearby Post/Unit to visit. Membership, Membership, en-US Membership!!en-US We arrived at the ALR Summit just in time for the formal en-US meet and greet of the new Post/Unit 410 to be located en-US in Rockledge. The Unit President Jackie and member en-US Rose were a delight to visit with and had good questions. en-US Again, Thank You District President Shirley for making the en-US time to assist and meet with them, getting them started en-US in the right direction. Their enthusiasm is contagious and en-US they will make things happen!! en-US Friday we attended the opening session for the ALR en-US Summit. The Amigos had an opportunity to speak en-US about Leadership and what it means to be a part of this en-US Family Organization. We also had the opportunity to en-US visit the future home site of Post/Unit 410. On Saturday, en-US l attended the Volunteer Hours reporting session Thank en-US You Beverly for your Excel sheet I am seriously going to en-US plagiarize your idea and customize the sheet for the Units en-US to utilize for their activity reporting. en-US Bernie and I attended the CPT-AED certication class en-US which was proctored by PDC Jim Ramos. I certainly en-US hope I never have to use these skills. However, I am en-US positively thankful that I have the knowledge in the event en-US that I do. It only takes those precious rst seconds and en-US minutes to help save someones life.en-US I know we talk the Be Kind speech and I have seen en-US the buttons. We need to be Acting the Part. The en-US Golden Rule is simple and so true treat others as you en-US would like to be treated. Most of the bad issues stems en-US from negative beginnings hurt feelings, misguided en-US perceptions or misunderstandings. A key component of en-US these is lack of communication and this can be seen at en-US all levels between members, organizations and leaders. en-US Sometimes you just have to let things go, just from the en-US sheer weight of it. en-US February is National Heart Month. Lets all show how en-US truly Big-Hearted we are and share some of your Warm-en-US Fuzzy feelings with each other. en-US Besides, Life is Better When Youre Laughingen en-US For God and Country,en-US en-US en-US TKen-US Treva Kay Wildricken-US en-US Department President

Explain en-US the purpose of the ags and how they will be sent to en-US our Active Military Troops. While you are there, you en-US can teach our youth how to fold an American ag and en-US the meanings of the thirteen folds. There are several en-US booklets, coloring books etc. available for assistance to en-US teach the kids about our ag, The Constitution, and The en-US Pledge of Allegiance. Flag etiquette, respect for the ag, en-US and proper ag disposal could be discussed.
