en-USThe Kaleidoscope VOLUME VII ISSUE 6 J ANUARY 2018 en-USMen-US Men-US Men-US3 A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ONE AND ALL!! en-US I hope en-US you enjoyed the Holidays and successfully spread good en-US cheer! Now, its time to make new resolutions, plan en-US events for new opportunities and look forward to make en-US futures bright for our veterans, our communities and our en-US children and youth. en-US I have continued a busy schedule through the end of the en-US year. Old Glory Unit 183 arranged with a local restaurant en-US Rock & Brews, coordinating a fundraiser to benet K-9s en-US for Warriors. They are a proud sponsor of many Veterans en-US events along with other local charities. It wasnt dicult en-US to work out the details and then advertising the event en-US on Facebook, posters in local grocery and retail stores, en-US Department Calendar and website as well as word en-US of mouth. There were several families in attendance en-US bringing their personal companions the restaurant en-US denitely catered to our 4-legged friends. Another en-US Companion Dog organization supported the event en-US bringing several of their in training dogs. The evening en-US was a success; everyone enjoyed their meal and the en-US shared camaraderie. Within a few days, a check for the en-US agreed donation was presented and sent to Department, en-US notated on the Donation Remittance form. Another event en-US is in the works for January. en-US My ocial visit to the 5th District wrapped around the en-US week of Thanksgiving. Bernie set-up Eagle One camp at en-US Post 137 Jacksonville, on Friday afternoon and I joined en-US him that evening. There were several Unit members en-US there when I arrived, saving a dinner to enjoy later en-US on District President Molly came bright and early on en-US Saturday morning, bearing a gift from the District a en-US beautiful ceramic Squirrel. She immediately found her en-US spot on the table in the front window!! Then we were o en-US for breakfast at one of the Units which turned out to be en-US on a dierent day, soo we went to plan B, Cracker Barrel en-US instead. Yummy Wild Blueberry Muns and a relaxing en-US visit sharing stories.en-US President Molly had the casual day planned: we started en-US with a visit to Unit 283 Arlington Jacksonville where Unit en-US President Beth and Area Membership Crystal-Sweep en-US Carolyn Brown with other members were gathered en-US completing their mid-year reports. Congratulations Beth en-US for completing the Leadership course oered through en-US National!! The members have been quite busy and en-US had to leave after a short visit to prepare baked goods. en-US Their Post Family was gearing up for the upcoming en-US Thanksgiving Dinner with Commander Steve attending. en-US Next, we were o to Unit en-US 316 Atlantic Beach and just en-US missed Liz Hill, again busy en-US schedule. Not to worry, en-US this was just a do drop in en-US and we would return later en-US in the week. We headed o to Unit 129 Jacksonville en-US Beach where many members were busy preparing for en-US a Celebration of Life to one of their dear members. en-US They still took a few minutes to share some time with en-US me. Several of the members in the lounge told stories en-US of activities that had been accomplished and plans for en-US Thanksgiving. Again, we would return next Saturday for en-US the scheduled End of District Tour Dinneren-US We had some time to kill and President Molly took us en-US on a tour of the local area on our way to her home Post en-US 54 Fernandina Beach for their famous Steak Dinner. We en-US passed the State Parks along the beach, saw several en-US lovely homes, traversed multiple round-abouts and nally en-US came to the Ferry. What a beautiful afternoon for a quick en-US boat ride. When we arrived at Post 54, we were greeted en-US with open arms and again told I was not needed for any en-US assistance. So, I just oated about talking to everyone. en-US Bernie had a discussion with one of the Sons members en-US on how we would be eating the best baked potatoes in en-US the State. We did enjoy a very tasty Steak Dinner with en-US all the xins. Yes, the baked potato was very good en-US Bernie nished mine including the skin!! We stayed en-US long enough to hear some of the live entertainment a en-US very talented keyboardist!! President Molly, being a en-US conscientious hostess, reminded us that we would have en-US an even earlier start Sunday; so we headed back to en-US Camp only to spend over 90-minutes crawling along 95 en-US due to several major car accidents. Molly texted me to en-US let me know she arrived home safelyen-US Sunday was very exciting for me as we were going to en-US tour the K-9s for Warriors facility in Ponte Vedra. We en-US shared their great services with Commander Steve and en-US Bernie along with other District sta. But rst we headed en-US to Post 253 Ponte Vedra Beach for Breakfast, where en-US Department 3rd Vice President Wanda Brandt joined us en-US before heading out to work, along with District Secretary en-US Kathy Helmly, Commander Steve and his District sta. en-US We were served a down-home breakfast and enjoyed en-US camaraderie with several Post Family members. We en-US had a very informative presentation for the Missing in en-US America Project whose mission is to locate, identify en-US and the unclaimed cremains of American Veterans. en-USOur speaker, Kathy Church, was very organized and en-US her passion for this project was apparent. She shared en-US recent success stories and how we as American Legion en-US Family members could help and get involved. The MIAP en-US website: www.miap.us has additional info, videos and en-US other events throughout the State. Thank You again, en-US Kathy job well done!!en-US So we were a little late to travel to K-9s for Warriors en-US and the tour hosted by CEO, Rory Diamond, but we en-US all made it in one piece. He started with the program en-US as a local attorney looking for a community service en-US opportunity. Founder Sharon Duval replied immediately en-US and he has been hooked ever since. After several en-US photo opportunities, we visited the lodge, warrior living en-US quarters and the canine kennels. It was their scheduled en-US nap time, but we were able to stroll and visit the dogs en-US falling in love with several Rory explained how the en-US process worked and the typical days routine for the en-US Warrior and his companion going to the store, library, en-US the mall etc.en-US Commander Steve asked many questions and Rory had en-US great answers. He even made note to add a suggestion en-US from Steve for added safety and/or evacuation training. en-US When we were all done, Rory stated the President and en-US another Warrior had visited Orlando and spoke I en-US politely thanked him again for that opportunity and how en-US our special guests were truly appreciated by the Auxiliary en-US members. Thats when he put 2 and 2 together (He en-US did send a very lovely Thank You card.)en-US Then, we were o to St. Augustine Post 37. Wow! What a en-US beautiful remodeling job (being a contractors daughter en-US I was fascinated with the woodwork). Hurricane Irma did en-US some damage, but repairs were made for the 2nd grand en-US re-opening. The luncheon was in honor of the Legion en-US Family. I was very pleased to see the Auxiliary attendance en-US included both long-time members and new members. en-US I enjoyed visiting with each of them. We talked about en-US Auxiliary programs and how they could associate with en-US community events and in turn, getting the word out en-US about our organization. I believe this Auxiliary will grow en-US and we will see great achievements!! We had an hour en-US or so to tour St. Augustine and of course President Molly en-US and I headed for the shops!!en-US After we stashed away our treasures, we went o to en-US our next stop; Post 194, St. Augustine. We were very en-US impressed with their Wall of Success lled from en-US oor to ceiling with photos of children attending and en-US graduating the after-school programs sponsored by the en-US Post Family. The members served a delicious southern en-US style dinner and fresh fruit for dessert a perfect nish! en-US I returned to Orlando and my real job. My youngest en-US sister and niece traveled to Florida from Virginia arriving en-US 12:30 am Wednesday morning. I played chaueur, en-US picked them up and drove them to Mt Dora to stay with en-US my parents, then drove back home to work that day. en-US Bernie returned from Jacksonville to spend Thanksgiving en-US Day with my Family. We then drove back to Jacksonville en-US to complete my 5th District visit. en-US Black Friday Morning found us on the Ferry again en-US traveling to Post 54 Fernandina Beach for Breakfast. I en-US noticed a car full of adult ladies in their PJs thinking en-US they must have driven for a while and having to sleep en-US in the car Upon entering Post 54, I was greeted with en-US additional people dressed in their PJs. Curiosity got to en-US me turns out, Fernandina Beach has an annual parade en-US through town comprised of people in their PJs. The shop en-US owners have specials to entice shopping and there are en-US treats for children. Of course I have noted my calendar en-US for 2018 to attend and I have plenty of time to choose my en-US PJ-attireen-US Post 54 has a history to tell. The original building was en-US a log-cabin in the center of town for 70+ years. Due to en-US pesky pests, it was demolished and the new building is en-US the current Post home. The chimney still stands and is en-US part of a Veterans Memorial. There is a dedicated log en-US beam in the front of the new building as you enter from en-US the parking lot and a framed photo collage of the old en-US building in the foyer of the new building. en-US Speaking of new buildings, our next stop was Hilliard en-US Post 401. The current location is just shy of the Georgia en-US border. The new building is close to being nished and en-US has certainly been planned to accommodate events with en-US ample parking both vehicle and motorcycle, strategic en-US patios for cookouts, meeting rooms and storage. We had en-US a light lunch and plenty of delicious desserts. en-US I am looking forward to visiting again when it is en-US completed. en-US We found ourselves racing to Post 9 Jacksonville en-US dont blink or youll miss the turn. This Post is part of a en-US commercial strip center, taking up the end space. We en-US were greeted at the door by the Post Commander Lena en-US and made to feel quite a home. I noticed the Auxiliarys en-US Cookbooka collection of favorite recipes by the Unit en-US members. I immediately bought one and noted several en-US recipes to test out on Bernie en-US Dinner was hosted by Post 316, Atlantic Beach, home of en-US Past National Commander Clarence Hill. The place was en-US packed. Wanda Brandt and Annie Anderson was able to en-US join us. We had a choice of Steak or Salmon for dinner. en-US Liz Hill was up to her elbows in the kitchen making sure en-US salads were made, the mushrooms and onions were just en-US right and everyones order was served accordingly. We en-US played the Meat Game Bingo and President Molly was en-US a shared winner. The entertainment was terric Video en-US DJ. Everyone was signing along or up on the dance oor. en-US Commander Steve has been challenged to a Dance en-US Contest at National after showing his moves more to en-USPRESIDENTS MESSAGE Continued from Page 3en-US en-US en-USContinued on Page 5en-US en-US
en-USThe Kaleidoscope VOLUME VII ISSUE 6 J ANUARY 2018 en-USMen-US Men-US Men-US5en-UScome en-US Saturday Breakfast was served by Unit 88, Jacksonville. I en-US was intrigued by the string and nail wall art mandalas of en-US the Legion Family Emblems. These were done by JoJo, en-US one of the Auxiliary members she did a faahbulous job en-US too! I walked through the Post and the great hall was en-US decorated in preparation of the holidays. Thank You en-US ladies for a great start to the day!!en-US We went to Unit 283 Jacksonville next. They had a great en-US turn-out for the Thanksgiving dinner. Several members en-US had gathered in the hall and we sat for a round-table en-US group chat. There was no rank among us questions en-US were posed and answered. We discussed membership en-US how to attract more members and processing of the en-US paperwork, many of the Auxiliary programs and mid-year en-US reporting to year-end reporting. They are planning for en-US upcoming events and district activities.en-US These are very busy women you can see they are en-US having fun too!en-US Lunch was hosted by Unit 137 Jacksonville. Wow!! en-US Everything was delicious and a 1st time-tried, homemade en-US recipe. I would certainly sign up to be their taste-tester!! en-US We all shared stories and the laughter lled the room. en-US It was topped o with dessert tiramisu, a favorite! We en-US gathered for a Kodak moment photo before leaving to en-US prepare for the End of 5th District Visit Dinner hosted by en-US Post 129, Jacksonville Beach.en-US Many District and Department Ocers and Chairmen en-US were in attendance, all dressed in their Sunday en-US Best. The Pork Roast Dinner melted in your mouth. en-US Commander Steve gave an overview of his visit, en-US Commander Bernie shared a few highlights and then en-US President Molly surprised me with parting gifts a basket en-US lled with favorite things, a large gift bag with more en-US favorite things and my very own Pink Teddy Bear to travel en-US with the Shuga Bear We departed on Sunday after our en-US camping breakfast and leisurely packing up. Thank You en-US again to the members of 5th District for showing me a en-US great time and sharing your kindness!en-US Commander Steve had invited Commander Bernie and en-US me to participate in the Avalon Park Festival Parade. It is en-US a local parade to kick-o the holiday season. In less than en-US 53 minutes, I had shopped at 3 stores buying items to en-US decorate the (3) Vehicles and the Project Vet Relief trailer. en-US Bernie warned the Legionnaires of Post 409 Avalon en-US Park to keep moving or I may decorate them as well I en-US did manage to secure reindeer antlers on the escort en-US American Legion Riders helmet. It was a beautiful day en-US and what a fantastic turn-out of parade participants and en-US people lining the streets of the parade route. One of en-US Steves grandsons rode with Bernie in the Sons vehicle en-US waving to the crowd. Bernie explained he was the real en-USPRESIDENTS MESSAGE Continued from Page 4en-US en-US en-USelf versus the stued toy elf sitting in the front window as en-US decoration. Thank You Steve, we had a wonderful time en-US and it sparked the holiday spirit!en-US On Sunday we traveled to Post 347 Lady Lake to visit with en-US the Southern Division National Vice Commander Bobby en-US Bryant. He traveled from Oklahoma leaving 49 degrees en-US to enjoy 79 degrees. We visited Old Glory 183 in Fern en-US Park and learned he is a Bass sherman after he saw our en-US lake.en-US Commander Steve took SDNVC Bobby Bryant to en-US Department Headquarters and then o to Lake Wales, en-US just a start to the many Posts planned for visits.en-US As you may know, Special Olympics is very dear to en-US Commander Bernie and is his Charity of Choice this year en-US for the Sons of the American Legion. On December 8th en-US and 9th we volunteered as Security for the Bowling State en-US Competition. There were over 720 athletes competing en-US at Boardwalk Bowl in Orlando from all over the State. en-US Their coaches and families were in attendance, giving en-US guidance and encouragement to the athletes. I believe en-US the athletes were even stronger supporters to each en-US other. And when it came time for the awards you have en-US never seen so many beaming smiles. If you ever have an en-US opportunity to volunteer for any of the Special Olympics en-US sports, please treat yourself and do so. They are always en-US looking for extra helping hands for these events. Check en-US out their website for more information.en-US Sunday December 10th, St. Cloud 80 hosted their Special en-US Olympics Christmas Party. Bernie and I have attended en-US in the past and this year was no exception! However, my en-US visit was shortened as I had an invitation to a Childrens en-US Christmas Party at Lakeland Unit 4 later in the afternoon. en-US It was an honor to read Twas the Night Before Christmas en-US to the children as they waited for the arrival of Santa. en-US There was plenty for them to do: a table was set up to en-US decorate ornaments or headbands, another to decorate en-US cookies with several frosting avors and multiple en-US toppings. I loved the kids creativity with the ornaments, en-US although I am not so sure about actually eating the en-US nished cookies Santa and his helpers handed out en-US gifts, stockings and traditional candy canes to each child. en-US Several had photos taken (me too!) and I only caught en-US one child trying to tug on Santas beard. I must say the en-US candy cane Reindeer and Hershey chocolate candy cane en-US Sleighs were totally cute and now adorn my tree. Thank en-US You again President Jo for inviting me!en-US I hope the pleasantries of the holiday season stays en-US with us into the New Year. Lets make our resolution en-US to be kinder to one another. THE AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY, DEPARTMENT OF FLORIDA The Kaleidoscope VOLUME VII ISSUE 6 JANUARY 2018 M M M13 Protocol en-USThe National American Legion Auxiliary Constitution & en-US Bylaws states, all American Legion Auxiliary meetings will en-US be conducted using en-USParliamentary Procedureen-US based on en-US Roberts Rules of Order, Newly Revised.en-US So what is Parliamentary Procedure?en-US Parliamentary Procedure is a set of rules that exists to en-US facilitate eciently conducted meetings that protect the en-US rights of members. It allows everyone to be heard and to en-US make decisions without confusion. en-US The fundamental principles of Parliamentary Procedure en-US are: 1. en-USFairness of process and courtesy for all. 2. en-USOnly one thing, speaker, motion, or action at a time. 3. en-USThe majority rules. 4. en-USThe minority must be heard. 5. en-USEach proposition is entitled to a full and free debate. 6. en-USThe purpose is to facilitate action, not to obstruct it.en-US Why is Parliamentary Procedure Important?en-US Because it's a time tested method of conducting en-US business at meetings and public gatherings. It can be en-US adapted to t the needs of any organization. Today, en-US Robert's Rules of Order newly revised is the basic en-US handbook of operation for the American Legion Auxiliary en-US when conducting a meeting. So it is important that en-US everyone know these basic rules!en-US Meetings, Motions and Members Rights!en-US American Legion Auxiliary meetings usually follow a xed en-US order of business. Below is a typical example: 1. en-USCall to order. 2. en-USRoll call of members present. 3. en-USReading of minutes of last meeting. 4. en-USOcers reports. 5. en-USCommittee reports. 6. en-USSpecial orders --Important business previously 7. en-USesignated for consideration at this meeting. 8. en-USUnnished business. 9. en-USNew business. 10. en-USAnnouncements. 11. en-USAdjournment.en en-US The method used by members to express themselves is en-US in the form of moving motions. A motion is a proposal en-US that the entire membership take action or a stand on an en-US issue. Individual members can:en-US 1. en-USCall to order. 2. en-USSecond motions. 3. en-USDebate motions. 4. en-USVote on motions.en en-US How are Motions Presented?en-US A motion is a formal step to introduce a matter for en-US consideration by a group. Generally, a motion should be en-US phrased in a way to take action. The person making the en-US motion is called the mover. Therefore when you make en-US a motion you are moving the motion into action for this en-US reason the mover states I move to or I move that.en-US 1. en-USObtaining the oor a. en-USWait until the last speaker has nished. b. en-USRise and address the Chairman by saying, en-US "Madame Chairman, or Madame President." c. en-USWait until the Chairman/ President recognizes you.en-US 2. en-USMake Your Motion a. en-USSpeak in a clear and concise manner. b. en-USAlways state a motion armatively. Say, "I move en-US that we ..." rather than, "I move that we do not ... c. en-USAvoid personalities and stay on your subject.en-US 3. en-USWait for Someone to Second Your Motionen-US 4. en-USAnother member will second your motion or the en-US Chairman/ President will call for a second.en-US 5. en-USIf there is no second to your motion it is lost.en-US 6. en-USThe Chairman/ President States Your Motion a. en-USThe Chairman/ President will say, "it has been 1st Vice President MICHELE DEGENNARO
THE AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY, DEPARTMENT OF FLORIDA The Kaleidoscope VOLUME VII ISSUE 6 J ANUARY 2018 M M M13 moved and seconded that we ..." Thus placing en-USyour motion before the membership for en-US consideration and action. b. en-USThe membership then either debates your motion, en-US or may move directly to a vote. c. en-USOnce your motion is presented to the membership en-US by the Chairman/ President it becomes "assembly en-US property", and cannot be changed by you without en-US the consent of the members.en-US 7. en-USExpanding on Your Motion (Discussion) a. en-USThe time for you to speak in favor of your motion en-US is at this point in time, rather than at the time you en-US present it. b. en-USThe mover is always allowed to speak rst. c. en-USAll comments and debate must be directed to the en-US Chairman/ President. d. en-USKeep to the time limit for speaking that has been en-US established. e. en-USThe mover may speak again only after other en-US speakers are nished, unless called upon by the en-US Chairman/ President.en-US 8. en-USPutting the Question to the Membership a. en-USThe Chairman / President asks, "Are you ready to en-US vote on the question?" b. en-USIf there is no more discussion, a vote is taken.en-US en-US There are two other motions that are commonly used en-US that relate to voting.en 1. en-USMotion to Table -This motion is often used in the en-US attempt to "kill" a motion. The option is always en-US present, however, to "take from the table", for en-US reconsideration by the membership.en-US 2. en-USMotion to Postpone Indenitely -This is often used en-US as a means of parliamentary strategy and allows en-US opponents of motion to test their strength without an en-US actual vote being taken. Also, debate is once again en-US open on the main motion.en-US en-US Voting on a Motion:en-US The method of voting on any motion depends on the en-US situation and the by-laws of policy of the organization. en-US There are ve methods used to vote, they are:en-US 1. en-USBy Voice -The en-US Chairman asks those en-US in favor to say, "aye", en-US those opposed to say en-US "no". Any member may move for an exact count. 2. en-USBy Roll Call -Each member answers "yes" or "no" en-US as her name is called. This method is used when a en-US record of each person's vote is required.en-US 3. en-USBy General Consent -When a motion is not likely en-US to be opposed, the Chairman says, "if there is no en-US objection ..." The membership shows agreement by en-US their silence, however if one member says, "I object," en-US the item must be put to a vote.en-US 4. en-USBy Division -This is a slight verication of a voice en-US vote. It does not require a count unless the chairman en-US so desires. Members raise their hands or stand.en-US 5. en-USBy Ballot -Members write their vote on a slip of en-US paper; this method is used when secrecy is desired.en-US en-US It is the chairs duty to en-USmake the declaration of facten-US and en-US to en-USannounce the result of the voteen-US. She will either say, en-US The ayes have it and the motion carried or The noes en-US have it and the motion has failed. The chair also needs en-US to tell the assembly what will happen as a result of the en-US vote.en-US en-US Parliamentary Procedure is the best way to get things en-US done at your meetings. But, it will only work if you use it en-US properly.en-US 1. en-USAllow motions that are in order. 2. en-USHave members obtain the oor properly. 3. en-USSpeak clearly and concisely. 4. en-USObey the rules of debate.en-US Most importantly, BE COURTEOUS to one another!en-US Many resources are available to our members, and the en-US American Legion Auxiliary Unit Guide Book compiled by en-US National is a good place to start. This book is available en-US online at en-USwww.alaforveterans.orgen-US or through Emblem en-US Sales Catalog for $9.95. Please review Nationals Unit en-US Guide Book, Departments Unit Guide, and Roberts en-US Rules of Order Revised. When in doubt, ask a mentor.
Junior Activities en-USEngaging the next generation to become members in en-US the American Legion Auxiliary is the important purpose en-US of the Junior Activities program. Junior membership is en-US open to girls from infancy through age 17. The Junior en-US Activities program prepares girls under the age of 18 en-US to become active adult members of the organization en-US by providing positive volunteer experiences that instill en-US the ideals of the Auxiliary. These young ladies develop en-US leadership skills while having fun and will hopefully en-US become the future leaders of our organization. en-US Juniors are members of the Auxiliary who are organized en-US as a committee of a unit. Juniors are not a separate en-US organization. Junior members conduct their own en-US meetings and perform their own special activities. Junior en-US members plan their own community service projects, en-US along with supporting projects sponsored by the en-US Auxiliary and The American Legion Family. en-US The Juniors Patch Program is designed to foster the en-US ideals of volunteer service in our communities and for en-US our veterans. The Patch Program incentivizes active en-US participation and helps Junior members learn about en-US the Auxiliary. An annual Junior Meeting is held to en-US provide these young members with an opportunity to en-US become acquainted with girls from dierent states and en-US experience multicultural team building while forming en-US exciting new friendships. en-US Junior members are eligible to apply for the Auxiliarys en-US en-US National Spirit of Youth Scholarship. Each year, ve young en-US women are competitively selected to each receive a four-en-US year scholarship to pursue a college education, currently en-US awarded at $1,000 per year for four years.en-US Connecting with our Junior members and involving them en-US in worthwhile activities that support our mission is the en-US best way to ensure the continuation of the Auxiliary for as en-US long as there are veterans to serve. en-US If you are planning to submit a Junior for an Award, en-US please follow the guidelines and if submitting for a en-US Nation Award. 1) Please follow instructions as you ll en-US out the National Report and Awards Cover Sheet found en-US in the awards section of the Programs Action Plan. 2) en-US Provide details/examples about the activity as outlined in en-US the awards materials and guidelines section. 3) Submit en-US as indicated in the Annual Supplement to the Programs en-US Action Plan. I can hardly believe that by the time you read this en-USnewsletter, we will have said goodbye to 2017 and en-US greeted 2018. I know the time has been ying by, en-US As we are all so busy making life better for our many en-US veterans and their families. I so enjoyed reading reports en-US of all the positive things that have been happening all en-US across Florida. I heard from many District Chairmen en-US that reporting from Units was very low and this is very en-US disappointing. I know that each and every Unit in Florida en-US has done something to help a veteran this year. Please en-US remember that we need to have these things reported. en-US Please make a dedicated eort to complete a Year-End en-US Report, following all instructions in the VA&R Program en-US Action plan.en-US en-US It was so great to see everyone that attended Fall en-US Conference in Orlando. I heard so many comments en-US about how great they thought the entire weekend was. en-US Everyone learned much from the many breakout sessions en-US and this information will be shared with members that en-US werent able to attend. Kudos to President T.K. for doing en-US such a great job of making this weekend a success!en-US en-US On December 18th, I traveled south to attend the District en-US 9 Past Presidents and Commanders Dinner at Post en-US 222 in Ft. Lauderdale. Along with a great dinner, I was en-US once again privileged to attend another Quilts of Valor en-US Ceremony. It is such a heartwarming experience to see a en-US handmade quilt wrapped around veterans shoulders to en-US welcome him home.en-US en-US The next day, I accompanied members from the Mighty en-US 9th District to the Alexander Sandy Nininger State en-US Veterans Nursing Home in Pembroke Pines. The veterans en-US were treated to an old fashioned ice cream social, which en-US they enjoyed so very much. District 9 provided more en-US dierent kinds of ice cream toppings that I could ever en-US imagine even existed. District President Joanne Cox en-US was in charge of the whipped cream and she personally en-US made sure that each and every veteran had a generous en-US portion. Gail Dupuis was able to feed a blind veteran en-US his ice cream and also develop a very heartwarming en-US conversation. This veteran had served two tours of duty en-US in Vietnam and was very proud to talk about his service. en-US When Gail asked him how his ice cream tasted, he told en-US her that there was only one thing that could make it en-US better and that was some nice homemade apple pie. I en-US immediately jumped in and suggested that Gail bake en-US him a pie. Of course, she agreed, so now we all have to en-US constantly remind her to make this pie. While Gail fed en-US one veteran, I fed another. I can tell you that this was the en-US most moving, yet humbling, experience I have ever had en-US in my life. This young veteran was mostly unresponsive, en-US yet tears rolled down his cheek when I fed him and en-US stroked his face, all while thanking him for his service.en-US en-US As you all know, we have been requesting costume en-US jewelry, scarves, hats, gloves, lipsticks and nail polishes.en-US anything girlie to distribute to our female veterans. I en-US distributed goody bags to the ladies at Sandy Nininger en-US and knew immediately that this idea was a huge hit. Each en-US bag was lled with bracelets, necklaces, pins, scarves, en-US mirrors, combs, just to mention a few of the items. Well, en-US the ladies put ALL of the jewelry on at one time, along en-US with the scarves. It was amazing to see how much fun en-US they were having.en-US en-US On January 20, the alarm rang at 5:00 so that Gail en-US Dupuis and I could make the drive to Miami VAMC. For en-US those of you that arent familiar with Miami trac, it may en-US seem unbelievable that a drive from Ft. Lauderdale to en-US downtown Miami could take 2 hours. Of course, there en-US was work trac and rain but 2 hours??? But, we had a en-US mission to deliver a 7.5 foot Christmas tree to the VAMC en-US and veterans were counting on us. Upon arrival, I was en-US given the tour of all tours by Mr. Mernie E. Williams, en-US who is the Chief of the Volunteer Service Team. I can tell Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation ANN KING-SMITH
The Kaleidoscope VOLUME VII ISSUE 6 J ANUARY 2018 M M M27 you that this facility is AMAZING. The care and attention en-USthat was given to each veteran was incredible. Everyone en-US I met on the Volunteer Service Team expressed their en-US gratitude to the American Legion Auxiliary for nally en-US having a representative at their facility. Thank you, Gail en-US Dupuis for lling these shoes that were vacant for many en-US years.en-US en-US I had so much fun watching the veterans in the CLC en-US make Christmas decorations for the tree that Gail and I en-US had delivered. It was obvious that they were very proud en-US of their creations. After the decorations were made, the en-US real fun began. Female veterans that were able to leaveen-US their beds arrived for a special spa day, complete with en-US haircuts and styling. Denice Grenis and Gail Dupuis en-US brought their own stylist in to give these female veterans en-US a special cut, rather than the traditional barber cut they en-US are accustomed to. They also had their nails done and en-US enjoyed all the goodies from the gift bags I delivered. en-US Once again, every piece of jewelry was put on..all at en-US once. The females that werent able to leave their rooms en-US werent forgotten, as we made special visits to them. en-US They also enjoyed their jewelry, mirrors and lipstick. en-US We enjoyed listening to stories told by brave female en-US veterans that served in World War II, recalling events asen-US if they happened yesterday.en-US en-US My day ended by a visit to the Hospice Unit, which now en-US consists of 10 beds but is en-US under expansion and will en-US soon be 20 beds. What en-US a beautiful and peaceful en-US area this is. They have a resident long haired Siamese cat en-US that sits on the lobby sofa, greeting everyone. I was told en-US that she roams from room to room, bringing love to our en-US veterans in their nal hours.en-US en-US As Auxiliary members, we often talk of bringing cheer en-US and happiness to our veterans in hospitals and nursing en-US homes. We need to also think of the veterans and their en-US families that are in Hospice areas of the facilities. I asked en-US the Director if there are needs in this area that we might en-US be able to fulll. She suggested pillows or lap robes that en-US the veteran could rest their head on or be wrapped in en-US during their nal hours. These items could then be kept en-US by family members as a way to treasure those last days en-US with their loved one.en-US en-US Please, continue to join me this year as we all shout en-US out LOUD and CLEAR for each and every one of our en-US veterans. Please make sure to join us on our Facebook en-US VA&R page to keep up to date with new ideas and en-US comments. I will be posting new information there as it en-US comes along. ala department of oridaveterans aairs en-US & rehabilitation 2017-2018.en-USSUDOKUen-USINSANEen-US The object is to place the numbers 1 to 9 in the en-US empty squares so that each row, each column en-US and each 3x3 box contains the same number en-US only once.
