DEDICATION
To the Reverend Thomas A. and Mrs. Affie M. Wright, we dedicate this book. This wonderful moment in the history of Mount Carmel Baptist Church is the result of your vision, leadership, and untiring efforts.
Even though what has been done up to this point is very commendable and has been rather difficult, we realize that the task ahead will be even more so. However, in our years of working with you, we have come to know your uncompromising dedication to carry out the Will of God. Through this dedication to you, we pledge that this edifice will serve as a base from which to minister to the needs of all Cod's children. With God as our Pilot and you as the Co-Pilot, Flight Mt. Carmel No. 1984 becomes airborne this eighth day of April, 1984.
May the name of Mount Carmel Baptist Church of Gainesville become known around the nation as the friendly, training, praying, tithing, and soul winning church.
"it Couldn't Be Done"
Somebody said that it couldn't be done,
But with a chuckle replied
That "maybe it couldn't," but he would be one
Who wouldn't say so till he'd tried.
So he buckled right in with a trace of a grin on his face.
If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackeled the thing
That couldn't be done, and he did it.
Somebody scoffed: "Oh, you'll never do that;
At least no one ever has done it";
But he took off his coat and he took off his hat,
And the first thing we knew he'd begun it.
With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin
Without any doubting of quiddit,
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn't be done, and he did it.

FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK
We have come to the point of realizing the fulfillment of a long important vision. Our new facilities have been made possible by the members of Mount Carmel, well wishers of the community, from many churches, the state of Florida and other states. We are grateful to them in helping us to achieve this magnificent task. We are certainly grateful to everyone who made any kind of sacrifice, be it small or great.
The people of the church, the community and others have not constructed this building in order to be recipients of some kind of grandiose praise or glory. Our main objective has been centered upon the glory of God; and a better chance to render greater service to the people of this community, the state, and the nation. We are going to ponder greater ways to do this from one year to another, as we seek His guidance and understanding. God is going to help us to do a better job in nurturing;i babies and children, saving lost souls, training and teaching, reclaiming those who have gone astray, ministering to families, feeding those who are hungry, and worshipping Him daily in spirit and in truth. We must keep Zechariah 4:6 in mind "Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts."

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Wright, Jr.
Monica 0. Wright Sabrina R. Wright Macon, Georgia
We have been praying with you every Brick of the way. In life we are faced with several tasks. Some of these tasks can even be called tests. This church was indeed a task und a test; In our household when we have something. difficult to do, we turn to our favorite passage of scripture, Isaiah 40:31. It is called our "can do" verse.
"But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint."
Thank God and Amen

The Bracy Family (Reverend Bracy, Mrs. Bracy, Randy and LaVon Patrice)
TO THE MOUNT CARMEL FAMILY:
Today, our hearts are united with yours in praise, prayer and thanksgiving for what God has done at Mt. Carmel. Truly, God has blessed you beyond measure with the erection of this great temple of worship.
We know, in small part, that a lot of tears, a lot of toil, and great struggle have brought you thus far. Make no mistake about it, many sacrifices have been made and many times you have had to climb the "rough side of the mountain." But when you look back on this day, you will know deep down within that it's all been worth it.
It is our prayer that this chuch will stand long through the years, not as a testimony of what men and women can do on their own, but what God can do with men and women when they place themselves at His disposal.
May God continue to bless you richly.
Yours in Christ,
33 The Bracy Family

A Tribute To Mount Carmel
It was the year 1962 Through the years babies were born
When we came here to serve you. Where God's love had been sown.
We were very cautious to see We tried to guide them in God's way
just what this church would be. To grow in Christianity everyday.
The parsonage was there gleaming white, There have been weddings of all kinds.
Ready to receive our family. Beautiful is the word that describes them.
Everything around us was shining bright Happiness they are now enjoying
To give a big welcome to the Wrights. With joy and the fullness of living.
Finally as we settled in As we look back over the years,
With happiness in our hearts, We thank God for your love.
Wheels were turning for work to begin; Surely the Lord sent us here
We had to get busy and do our part. Directly from his throne above.
There was Pat, Tom, Phil, and LaVon We feel that each member is a star
Wondering about finding new friends; That shines closely and afar.
They were not here very long You worked so hard without much rest,
Before they had many pals again. Striving and praying to do your best.
On special days you remembered us And now when you see flowers bloom
With goodies and gifts galore. Or a rainbow in the sky
This proved that we had your trust Or the calmness of the shaded moon,
And every heart was an open door. Remember that we love you and you know why.
Sometimes there was joy as well as strife You brought sunshine into our hearts.
When there seemed to be no reason. From your love we will not depart,
Not knowing what brought it into our life, And when the Lord lay down to sleep,
But Jesus spreads his wings of healing. We pray our memory you will keep.
From time to time loving members passed away;
Some were like flowers in full bloom.
Knowing that God will call us all someday, May God ever bless you.
We become more woven in the Christian loom.

Flower of Faith
Sometimes life is easy, hard, toilsome, and a challenge. The thing that pushes our steps onward and upward IS FAITH: we believed we could do it. Without this faith, discouragement would have beckoned us to lower levels.
WE NEED FAITH in God, in self, and in others. Our fore parents exemplified faith:
FAITH gave them strength when their feet faltered.
FAITH gave them courage when their hearts sank.
FAITH gave them unity when their opinions divided.

THANK YOU, GOD, FOR EVERYTHING
Thank you, God, for everything the big things and the small, For "Every good gift comes from God" the giver of them allAnd all too often we accept without any thanks or praise The gift God sends as blessings each day in many ways First, thank you for the little things that often come our way, The things we take for granted but don't mention when we pray, Then, thank you for the "Miracles" we are too blind to see, And give us new awareness of our many gifts from Thee, And help us to remember that the Key to Life and Living Is to make each prayer a Prayer of Thanks and every day Thanksgiving.

When I Must Leave You
When I must leave you for a little while, Please do not grieve and shed wild tears And hug your sorrow to you through the years, But start out bravely with a gallant smile; And for my sake and in my name Live on and do all things the same Feed not your loneliness on empty days, But fill each waking hour in useful ways, Reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer And I in turn will comfort you and hold you near; And never, never be afraid to die, For I am waiting for you in the sky!

name which he selected from the Bible.
2. The J.W. Posey Club was named in honor of the first minister of the church.

4. Between 1900 and 1938, Deacon W. G. Russ served as Sunday School Superintendent for 26 years.
5. The first church building which was of frame structure was erected on a small parcel of land
50' X 100'.
6. In 1939 Rev. H. B. Higgs, who was the pastor, represented the church in the Baptist World
Alliance in Atlanta, Georgia.
7. On the 4th Monday night in February, 1946, the burning of the mortgage ceremony was held.
8. On September 2, 1943, the trustees secured a loan for $5, 000 at 8% interest to build the structure
now located at N. W. 5th Avenue and 4th Street. This began under the leadership of Rev. Higgs,
whose administration was interrupted by a serious illness that finally led to his demise.
9. Rev. J.R. Roberts and members completed the church and moved into it May, 1944, with a
march down 5th Avenue from St. Paul C. M. E. Church.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK We have come to the point of realizing the fulfillment of a long important vision. God is going to help us to do a better job in nurturing babies and children, saving lost souls, training and teaching, reclaiming those who have gone astray, ministering to families, feeding those who are hungry, and worshipping Him daily in spirit and in truth. We must keep Zechariah 4:6 in mind — “Then he answered and spake unto me, saying. This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying. Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” 3

Flower of Faith Sometimes life is easy, hard, toilsome, and a challenge. The thing that pushes our steps onward and upward — IS FAITH: we believed we could do it. Without this faith, discouragement woidd have beckoned us to lower levels. WE NEED FAITH in God, in self, and in others. Our fore parents exemplified faith: FAITH gave them strength when their feet faltered. FAITH gave them courage when their hearts sank. FAITH gave them unity when their opinions divided. BEST WISHES AND CONGRATULATIONS Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Wright, Jr. Monica 0. Wright Sabrina R. Wright Macon, Georgia We have been praying with you every Brick of the way. In life we are faced with several tasks. Some of these tasks can even be called tests. This church was indeed a task and a test. In our household when we have something difficult to do, we turn to our favorite passage of scripture, Isaiah 40:31. It is called our “can do ” verse. “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” Thank God and Amen 31

We know, in small part, that a lot of tears, a lot of toil, and great struggle have brought you thus far. Make no mistake about it, many sacrifices have been made and many times you have had to climb the “rough side of the mountain.” But when you look back on this day, you will know deep down within that it’s all been worth it. It is our prayer that this chuch will stand long through the years, not as a testimony of what men and women can do on their own, but what God can do with men and women when they place themselves at His disposal. May God continue to bless you richly. 33 Yours in Christ, The Bracy Family

A Tribute To Mount Carmel It was the year 1962 When we came here to serve you. We were very cautious to see Just what this church would be. The parsonage was there gleaming white, Ready to receive our family. Everything around us was shining bright To give a big welcome to the Wrights. Finally as we settled in With happiness in our hearts, Wheels were turning for work to begin; We had to get busy and do our part. There was Pat, Tom, Phil, and LaVon Wondering about finding new friends; They were not here very long Before they had many pals again. On special days you remembered us With goodies and gifts galore. This proved that we had your trust And every heart was an open door. Sometimes there was joy as well as strife When there seemed to be no reason. Not knowing what brought it into our life, But Jesus spreads his wings of healing. From time to time loving members passed away; Some were like flowers in full bloom. Knowing that God will call us all someday, We become more woven in the Christian loom. Through the years babies were born Where GodÂ’s love had been sown. We tried to guide them in GodÂ’s way To grow in Christianity everyday. There have been weddings of all kinds. Beautiful is the word that describes them. Happiness they are now enjoying With joy and the fullness of living. As we look back over the years. We thank God for your love. Surely the Lord sent us here Directly from his throne above. We feel that each member is a star That shines closely and afar. You worked so hard without much rest, Striving and praying to do your best. And now when you see flowers bloom Or a rainbow in the sky Or the calmness of the shaded moon, Remember that we love you and you know why. You brought sunshine into our hearts. From your love we will not depart. And when the Lord lay down to sleep, We pray our memory you will keep. May God ever bless you. (original poem by) Mrs. Affie M. IT’S A FACT THAT. 1. Rev. H.P. Sauption, one of the founders of this church also gave it the name Mt. Carmel — a name which he selected from the Bible. 2. The J.W. Posey Club was named in honor of the first minister of the church. 3. The Frances Robinson Club is also named in honor of one of the founders, Mrs. Frances Robinson. 4. Between 1900 and 1938, Deacon W. G. Russ served as Sunday School Superintendent for 26 years. 5. The first church building which was of frame structure was erected on a small parcel of land 50’ X 100’. 6. In 1939 Rev. H.B. Higgs, who was the pastor, represented the church in the Baptist World Alliance in Atlanta, Georgia. 7. On the 4th Monday night in February, 1946, the burning of the mortgage ceremony was held. 8. On September 2,1943, the trustees secured a loan for $5,000 at 8% interest to build the structure now located at N.W. 5th Avenue and 4th Street. This began under the leadership of Rev. Higgs, whose administration was interrupted by a serious illness that finally led to his demise. 9. Rev. J.R. Roberts and members completed the church and moved into it May, 1944, with a march down 5th Avenue from St. Paul C.M.E. Church. 10. In February, 1956, the dining hall was connected to the church at a cost of $4,000, in preparation for hosting the General Baptist State Convention, which convened here in April, 1956, under the leadership of Rev. A.H. Howell. 11. The first parsonage was the old church building renovated in 1952. 12. Dea. C. G. Taylor served as Sunday School Superintendent for 17 years and is now president of Laymen’s organization. 13. In 1962 a minister with a vision was called to pastor this church. He is Rev. T. A. Wright whose ideas of expansion go beyond the area encompasing the church. Take a view of his accomplishments: (A) A new organ was installed in the chuch, (B) A five acre parcel of land for a new church building was purchased at approximately $14,000, (C) Gardenia Gardens, a low income rental project sub sidized by the government was built on N.E. 8th Avenue, (D) Palmer Day Care Center was founded, (E) Alavic Shopping Center was built, (F) A new site for the most modern of our churches at N.E. 25th Street and 8th Avenue, was purchased. 14. The first Black Judge for Gainesville is a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. Judge Stephan P. Mickle — a credit to our school system, our city, our county, and most important of all, our church. 15. The first Nurse’s Guild was organized by Mrs. Sherry Wingate, in 1980. 16.
