I knew exactly where I stood with my health." rfn tbnf t tb Q: What has been the response of the St. en-USJohns County School District to school en-US districts in the panhandle following en-US Hurricane Michael?en-USA: Superintendent Forson has said that en-US we in St. Johns County appreciated the en-US help and resources given to us when we en-US had hurricanes here and we want to en-US help our neighbors in the panhandle. en-US We are working to see if there is any en-US support we can give, trying to lend en-US resources where we can to help their en-US schools get up and running.en-USQ: What can you tell us about the school en-US districts five, 10, and 20 year plan?en-USA: We just approved this plan, which en-US prioritizes where we see the greatest en-US needs for new schools. e main point en-US is we are always planning for growth en-US and always updating the plan each year. en-US is year, we identied a new high en-US school, a new middle school and a new en-US K 8 school in addition to expansions en-US to Creekside High School, Liberty Pines en-US Academy and South Woods Elementary en-US for our ve year plan. My priority is the en-US new schools, but of course funding is en-US always the issue for that. With the half en-US cent sales tax and additional bonding en-US capabilities coming up in 2021, we will en-US also fund another K 8 school in the en-US northeast, but that is now contained in en-US the 10 year plan.en-USQ: Do we know where the new schools in en-US the five year plan will be located?en-USA: e school district has some sites, en-US but the location has not been deteren-US-en-US mined yet. e Growth and Planning en-US Department is working on data for this. en-US It is not too early to examine the sites, en-US but its still too early for a decision.en-USQ: What is a common concern that you are en-US hearing lately from parents?en-USA: I have heard lots of conversations en-US about concerns regarding vaping, alcoen-US-en-US hol and drugs, particularly as pertains to en-US our middle and high school students. I en-US would encourage parents to be aware of en-US the damage these things do to developen-US-en-US ing brains and be proactive in their en-US conversations with their children. On en-US the district website (www.stjohns.k12.en-US .us) we have resources as well. I believe en-US the district is being proactive in maken-US-en-US ing sure families have resources availen-US-en-US able and we encourage everyone to take en-US advantage of these resources. en-US Id also like to point out the volunteer en-US and mentoring opportunities available, en-US whether through ASSIST for our homeen-US-en-US less students, or RSVP, or Take Stock in en-US Children. Just one hour per week can en-US make a dierence in especially a middle en-US or high school students life. Having en-US someone other than a parent help stuen-US-en-US dents navigate where they are going and en-US who they are is so important.en-USQ: What else is happening in District 4?en-USA: We listened to all the School en-US Improvement Plans in September. en-US Although the schools had dieren-US-en-US ent initiatives, the overall theme was en-US providing the best education possible en-US for all students. Positive reinforcement en-US and creating cultures of caring I saw en-US this in all District 4 schools. I left these en-US meetings excited because I could tell the en-US schools leaders all had insight and they en-US were putting it into practice.en-USQ: How can our readers contact you?en-USA: ey can email me at kelly.barrera@en-US stjohns.k12..us or call me at (904) en-US 547-7510.en-USQ: Can you give us an update on the tax en-US roll?en-USA: e tax roll has been certied and en-US sent to the Florida Department of Reven-US-en-US enue and the St. Johns County taxing en-US authority.en-USQ: What happens next?en-USA: Beginning in the last week of Octoen-US-en-US ber, property owners will be receiving en-US their tax bills. If the bill is paid in Noen-US-en-US vember, there is a 4 percent discount apen-US -en-US plied; if paid in December, the discount en-US is 3 percent; if paid in January, the disen-US-en-US count is 2 percent; and if paid in Februen-US-en-US ary, the discount is 1 percent. ere is en-US no discount for paying in March and en-US the bill is due March 31, 2019. All tax en-US bills are past due on April 1, 2019.en-USQ: Can you shed some light on the en-US proposed Constitutional Amendment 1, en-US which will appear on ballots on Nov. 6?en-USA: is amendment directly aects ad en-US valorem taxation in our state by proposen-US-en-US ing an additional homestead exempen-US-en-US tion of $25,000. ere is a calculator en-US available on our website, www.sjcpa.us, en-US where property owners can estimate the en-US impact, if any, on their taxable value. en-US ere is also a detailed explanation of en-US how the proposal will work and who en-US will be aected. We encourage voters en-US to become the most informed that they en-US can and our oce is happy to provide en-US unbiased information.en-USQ: What about Constitutional Amendment en-US 2, which places limitations on property en-UStax assessments?en-USA: Currently, there is a 10 percent en-US cap on assessment increases on non-en-US homesteaded properties. If this amenden-US-en-US ment doesnt pass, then the 10 percent en-US cap would be repealed. It is important en-US to note that this applies only to non-en-US homestead properties and is retroactive, en-US meaning that if it doesnt pass, it applies en-US back to when the amendment was rst en-US passed; if these property values went en-US up, it would result in a larger tax bill en-US for 2019. e eect in our county is en-US primarily on commercial properties, but en-US it also applies to second homes.en-USQ: What is the best way for our readers to en-US contact you?en-USA: Our oce is located at 4030 Lewis en-US Speedway Ste. 203, (904) 827-5500. en-US It is open Monday Friday, 8:30 a.m. en-US 5 p.m. Also, readers can email me en-US at Eddie@sjcpa.us or call me at (904) en-US 827-5500. Maybe not as scary as en-US being sunk by a Nazi submarine, but en-US scary enough. We are all living longer. en-US e number of Americans over the age en-US of 100 has increased 50 percent since en-US the year 2000. Living longer means en-US we will all need to save more money. en-US Depending on your age, you may need en-US millions of dollars just to maintain en-US your standard of living. en-US If that number sounds daunting, it en-US should. To save enough, you will need en-US help. You will need to earn a higher en-US rate of return on your retirement saven-US-en-US ings. e right tool for the job is the en-US stock market. It is the only vehicle that en-US will get you where you need to go. Reen-US-en-US tiring comfortably in America requires en-US that you compound over time at a high en-US rate of return. And the evidence en-US shows that increasing this awareness is en-US indeed important. Consider this: Some en-US 50 percent of households are considered en-US at risk of not having enough money en-US to maintain their living standards in en-US retirement, according to the National en-US Retirement Risk Index, produced by en-US the Center for Retirement Research at en-US Boston College.en-US What can you do to help yourself stay en-US out of the at risk category? Here are a en-US few suggestions:en-US en-USDene what retirement security means en-US to you. Everyone has dierent ideas en-US about what a secure retirement looks like. en-US You might feel that true security means en-US being able to remain in your current en-US home and live independently throughout en-US your life. Or you might only feel secure if en-US you know you can aord to travel or help en-US your grown children or grandchildren en-US nancially. Once youve identied your en-US own vision of retirement security, you en-US should be able to determine the nanen-US-en-US cial resources youll need to reach your en-US desired outcome.en-US en-US Create an appropriate nancial strategy. en-US To achieve your idea of a secure retireen-USen-USment, you cant just hope for the best en-US you need to create a comprehensive en-US-en-US nancial strategy, accounting for your varien-US-en-US ous sources of retirement income: Social en-US Security, pensions, employer-sponsored en-US retirement plans, your investment porten-US-en-US folio and so on. You need to know how en-US much you can expect from these sources, en-US and how you can strengthen them.en-US en-US Be diligent in your retirement savings. en-US You could spend two or three decades en-USTake steps to boost your en-US retirement security en-USBy Karsten Jacobsonen-US email@example.com-USas a retiree, so youll want to accumulate en-US as many resources as you possibly can en-US and that means youll need to save and en-US invest diligently during your working en-US years. Put in as much as you can aord to en-US your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored en-US retirement plan and every time your en-US salary goes up, try to increase your anen-US-en-US nual contributions. But you can also go en-US beyond your employer-backed plan and en-US contribute to an IRA. In all your retireen-US-en-US ment accounts, youll want to include a en-US reasonable percentage of growth-oriented en-US investments, within the limits of your en-US personal risk tolerance. en-US en-US Establish an appropriate withdrawal en-US strategy. Your retirement security isnt just en-US based on how much youve built up been-US-en-US fore you retire it also depends on how en-US you manage your assets and investment en-US income during retirement. As you begin en-US to take out money from your 401(k), IRA en-US and other investment accounts, you need en-US to establish a withdrawal rate appropriate en-US for your age, retirement lifestyle and asset en-US level. If you take out too much each year, en-US you risk outliving your resources, but if en-US you withdraw too little, you might be en-US short changing yourself on your quality en-US of life. You may want to work with a en-US-en-US nancial professional, who can review your en-US entire situation income, expenses and en-US so on and recommend an appropriate en-US annual withdrawal gure. en-US ese arent the only keys to attaining en-US retirement security, but they can still help en-US you move toward that goal. Keep them in en-US mind as the years go by. en-US is article was written by Edward Jones for en-US use by your local Edward Jones Financial en-US Advisor, Karsten Jacobson. Researchers at the en-US University of California, Berkeley en-US found that during sleep, important en-US brain waves are produced that play key en-US roles in storing memories. ese waves en-US transfer the memories from the hipen-US-en-US pocampus to the prefrontal cortex, a en-US portion of the brain where long-term en-US information is stored. Purple for November Pancreas Cancer en-USAwareness monthen-USBy Martie Thompsonen-US email@example.com-USJudi Zitiello would like to turn even-US-en-US erything purple for Pancreas Cancer en-US Awareness in November, like everything en-US is pink for Breast Cancer Awareness in en-US October. Pancreas cancer is currently en-US the third leading cause of cancer-related en-US death largely because there is no early en-US detection method and is expected to en-US become the second in the next few years. en-US Zitiellos interest in pancreas cancer en-US is personal; she was rst diagnosed in en-US 2014, when she was busy as a board en-US member of the JT Townsend Foundaen-US-en-US tion, named after the well-known Episen-US-en-US copal High School football athlete who en-US suered a spinal injury and paralysis en-USPhotos courtesy Geek Chic Photographyen-USJudi Zitiello with grandchildren Jude Garrity and Olive Zitiello en-USand then dedicated his life to helping the en-US disabled receive assistance and adaptive en-US equipment in the Jacksonville area. Sadly, en-US Townsend passed away in 2013, leaving en-US Zitiello and others to keep the foundation en-US going. en-US When Zitiello was diagnosed with cancer en-US just 10 months later, she resigned from en-US the board and concentrated on her own en-US health. She underwent surgery, chemoen-US-en-US therapy and radiation and said it was en-US about two years before she felt like herself en-US again. She felt strongly that she wanted to en-US fundraise for the JT Townsend Foundaen-US-en-US tion again and with her new dedication en-US to pancreas cancer awareness, she and her en-US husband Tom en-US teamed up with en-US long time neighen-US-en-US bor and golf en-US professional Fred en-US Funk to start the en-US Champions for en-US Hope Celebrity en-US Golf Classic. en-US We knew we had to ght to nd an early en-US detection method for pancreas cancer, en-US Zitiello said. And since the Zitiello, Funk en-US and Townsend families were very close, it en-US made sense to support both causes.en-US After a year of incorporating and planen-US-en-US ning, the rst Champions for Hope en-US Celebrity Golf Classic was held in June en-US 2017 and was able to donate $550,000 to en-US Mayo Clinic for pancreas cancer research en-US and $200,000 to the JT Townsend Founen-US-en-US dation. e second event in 2018 resulted en-US in donations to Mayo in the amount of en-US $350,000 along with $150,000 for the JT en-US Townsend Foundation.en-US e Champions for Hope Celebrity Golf en-US Classic is the sole fundraising event of the en-US Funk-Zitiello Foundation and they do en-US it up right. e Friday night before the en-US Saturday golf tournament is Gala Night en-US at the TPC Clubhouse. Zitiello said apen-US-en-US proximately 260 people attend the gala, en-US which features a live and silent auction, a en-US VIP reception, dinner, and this past year, en-US dancing to the Chris ompson Band, en-US which donates their time. As many items en-US as possible are donated so that the maxien-US-en-US mum amount possible can be donated to en-US the causes.en-US On Saturday morning, the main event is en-US held at the TPC Stadium Course. Each en-US foursome is paired up with a local celeben-US-en-US rity, such as a PGA TOUR or Champions en-US Tour player, a Jacksonville Jaguars player, en-US an NFL alumnus or other local celebrity. en-US Zitiello said the highlight is what happens en-US on the practice range before the 8:30 a.m. en-US shotgun start.en-US e JT Townsend Memorial Gospel en-US Choir, directed by Vickie Ferrie, performs. en-US It is so moving to hear the inspiring music en-US in such a beautiful setting, Zitiello said.en-US e tournament features donated food or en-US beverage or a golf challenge on each of the en-US 18 holes to ensure that a good time is had en-US by all. Last year, 18 foursomes played in en-US the tournament. en-US Today, Zitiello acts as the managing direcen-US-en-US tor of the Funk-Zitiello Foundation in en-US addition to counseling friends of friends en-US who have been diagnosed with pancreas en-US cancer. She chronicles her journey in a en-US blog, www.zjudes.com, hoping that someen-US-en-US one will nd a little hope and encourageen-US-en-US ment. She has what she calls a special en-US connection with grandson Jude, who was en-US named after her and was born one week en-US after her rst diagnosis; Zitiello found en-US that her cancer had returned this summer. en-US She considers herself a miracle, as only 9 en-US percent of those diagnosed with pancreas en-US cancer live ve years. She plans to make it en-US past that anniversary in April of 2019.en-US I truly believe that God has given me this en-US extra time, and I had better do something en-US good with it, Zitiello said.en-US Visit www.championsforhopegolf.com for en-US more information about the Funk-Zitiello en-US Foundations Champions for Hope Celebrity en-US Golf Classic. eir text to pledge number is en-US (904) 530-2331.
