Allen en-US believed that by creating opportunities en-US for children of dierent cultures to come en-US together to learn about each other and en-US make friends, they would grow up to en-US become ambassadors for a more peaceful en-US world.en-US e rst Village program was held in en-US 1951 and it brought together young en-US people from Austria, Britain, Denmark, en-US France, Germany, Mexico, Norway, en-US Sweden and the USA. Over time, CISV volunen-US-en-US teers have organized more than 7,000 en-US international educational programs for en-US approximately 300,000 participants.en-US In addition to our summer program, en-US we have winter camps that are open en-US to the public. Monthly activities are en-US organized by our Junior Branch and en-US that helps to build leadership skills in en-US our young volunteers. We also have a en-US mini camp over Labor Day en-US weekend, CISV President en-US Lisa Taylor said. en-US Interchange is another en-US outreach program of CISV. en-US While based on the same en-US educational principles as en-US CISVs camp-based proen-US-en-US grams, Interchange encouren-US-en-US ages a deeper bond between en-US two cultures by placing en-US young people within famien-US-en-US lies. e two way family en-US exchange program is for en-US 12 15 year olds and each en-US exchange lasts between 14 en-US and 28 days. Interchange has en-US taught me a lot and I just want to give en-US back. Its such a diverse group of kids en-US and its great to see how they really hit it en-US o with each other and become life-en-US long friends, Florida State University en-US sophomore and St. Johns County CISV en-US volunteer Will Taylor said. en-US Visit www.cisv.org for more informaen-US-en-US tion about how you can participate, en-US volunteer, or contribute to the St. Johns en-US County CISV chapter. en-USPhotos courtesy CISVen-USA CISV Jacksonville delegation.en-US CISV Interchange students at the airport. en-USCISV works to educate and inspire thousands of children en-US and young people, all while having fun. en-USCISV students learn about dierent cultures. en-USBy Angela Higginbothamen-US angela@floridanewsline.comInspiring a more peaceful worlden-USWhat to do about en-US mosquitoes?en-USBy Martie Thompsonen-US editor@floridanewsline.comen-US Mosquitoesen-US cont. on pg. 13en-USIts summer and there has been a lot of en-US rain this year. It is a story about en-US two men, Russell Conwell and Johnny en-US Ring. Russell Conwell did not believe en-US in God. He was proud of his lack of en-US faith. In 1862, before he could graduen-US-en-US ate from Yale, he enlisted in the Union en-US Army. e townsfolk from his little en-US town in Massachusetts sent him o to en-US ght with a beautiful ceremonial sword. en-US Captain Conwell was even prouder of en-US that sword than he was of his atheism. en-US In camp, Conwell was assigned an oren-US-en-US derly named John Quincey Ring. Ring en-US would stay with Conwell for most of en-US the war. One of his jobs was to care for en-US the captains prized sword. Ring would en-US polish and oil it and keep it safe. Some en-US say that Ring was a Quaker. He was en-US almost certainly an early conscientious en-US objector. He refused to ght. Every en-US night, Johnny Ring read his Bible and en-US he prayed. He prayed for his country, en-US his family, his comrades, and his comen-US-en-US mander. is behavior irritated Conwell en-US and he expressly forbade Rings prayers. en-US At one point, it is said that Conwell en-US even took the young mans Bible away! en-US But, Johnny Ring answered to a higher en-US authority and he prayed continuously en-US for his commanders redemption.en-US One day, the Confederates overran the en-US Union camp. Conwell and his men ed en-US across a bridge which they set aame. en-US Ring, remembering the sword, ran en-US back into enemy re to retrieve the en-US precious symbol of his captains honor. en-US He returned to Conwell clutching the en-US sword in his hands. His body was badly en-US burned, and he collapsed exhaling his en-US nal breath as he laid the sword at Conen-US -en-US wells feet.en-US Shortly thereafter, Conwell was badly en-US injured near Atlanta. He spent months en-US in a military hospital recovering. It was en-US during his recuperation that Conwell en-US found God. Remembering Rings sacen-US-en-US rice, he prayed daily, promising that en-US if he recovered he would accomplish en-US the work of two men: Johnny Ring en-US and himself. After the war, he became a en-US Baptist minister. He moved to Philaen-US-en-US delphia, where he started a school he en-US called the Temple. at school became en-US Temple University. e school of theolen-US-en-US ogy at Temple was named the Conwell en-US School of eology. In fact, we have en-US one here in Jacksonville: e Gordon-en-US Conwell School of eology.en-US Russell Conwell was one of this nations en-US rst motivational speakers. His most en-US famous work was a speech called Acres en-US of Diamonds. e essence of that en-US speech is that you can travel the world en-US looking for fame, fortune, or purpose en-US only to nd what you are looking for en-US in your own backyard. Conwell would en-US give the speech 6,152 times before his en-US death in 1925. en-US Investments often work like this as en-US well. Over and over, I see investors en-US looking for the next great idea like it en-US was some sort of pot of gold at the end en-US of the rainbow. e reality is that most en-US of the really good investments you will en-US make in your lifetime are right there en-US in front of you, in your own backyard. en-US Great American companies that we all en-US know and love. Its extremely hard to be a solo en-US caregiver. By consulting with other family en-US members or close friends, you may nd en-US that some of them have the time and en-US ability to help.en-US Consider obtaining durable power of en-US attorney. Youll en-US be in a better position to help the indien-US-en-US vidual living with Alzheimers if you have en-US all the important nancial documents en-US bank statements, insurance policies, wills, en-US Social Security payment information, en-US deeds, etc. in one place.en-US Get professional help. You may want to en-US consult with an attorney, who can advise en-US you on establishing appropriate arrangeen-US-en-US ments, such as a living trust, which proen-US-en-US vides instructions about the estate of the en-US person for whom youre providing care en-US and names a trustee to hold title to propen-US-en-US erty and funds for the beneciaries. You en-US also might want to meet with a nancial en-US advisor, who can help identify potential en-US resources and money-saving services. And en-US a tax professional may be able to help you en-US nd tax deductions connected to your en-US role as caregiver. Finally, use your experien-US-en-US ence as a caregiver to remind yourself of en-US the importance of planning for your own en-US needs. For example, a nancial profesen-US-en-US sional can suggest ways of preparing en-US for the potentially huge costs of long-en-US term care, such as those arising from an en-US extended stay in a nursing home. Caring en-US for an individual living with Alzheimers en-US has its challenges. Shoaren-USEvery day many citizens come in conen-US-en-US tact with deputy sheris for a variety of en-US reasons, from a routine trac stop to en-US an active investigation. Our deputies en-US and other law enforcement ocers are en-US trained to do so safely, eciently as well en-US as eectively; however, problems could en-US occur when citizens are not sure how en-US to react and respond when approached en-US by an ocer. is lack of knowledge en-US could result in fear, nervousness, anger, en-US or even aggressive behavior on the part en-US of the citizen, as well as the ocer. It is en-US my hope that the information gained en-US here will assist you when dealing with en-US any law enforcement ocer.en-US Lets begin by asking the question why en-US would an ocer want to stop and speak en-US with me? e ocer or deputy could en-US be checking out a complaint that was en-US phoned in by another citizen. ere en-US could be a report of some criminal en-US activity which occurred in the area or en-US you may have witnessed something that en-US could provide valuable information in en-US an investigation. Perhaps your actions en-US could cause the deputy to think you en-US are having trouble and need assistance. en-US e best way to clarify the situation is en-US to ask questions. Remember that some en-US of their conversations are not necessaren-US-en-US ily investigative, but a potential conict en-US could be alleviated by your cooperative en-US dialogue.en-US If a deputy does stop and ask questions, en-US your honest responses will usually en-US resolve the situation quickly. If the en-US ocer hasnt told you why you have en-US been stopped, you have every right en-US to inquire. If despite these consideren-US-en-US ations, you feel that you do not want to en-US respond, the deputy must respect your en-US right not to answer. Remember though, en-US your cooperation could be most helpful en-US in aiding in a criminal investigation.en-US Another common occurrence is the en-US trac stop, which could be for an en-US infraction, for a safety violation, or the en-US vehicle or driver matches a description en-US of a suspect of a recent crime. Here are en-US some suggestions that could alleviate en-US some concerns of an ocer at a trac en-US stop:en-US When signaled by a deputy, slow down en-US and safely pull over to a place out of en-US the trac ow. Sit calmly, with your en-US hands visible on the steering wheel. en-US If you have any passengers, ask them en-US to sit quietly with their hands visible. en-US Avoid sudden movements or ducking en-US in the seat; these actions could unnecen-US-en-US essarily alarm the ocer. If the stop is en-US at night, turn on your inside light after en-US pulling over and roll down any tinted en-US windows. For safety reasons, the ocer en-US would want to see inside and ensure en-US no threats are present. Do not get out en-US of your car unless the ocer or deputy en-US asks that you step out. If you are asked en-US to do so, comply in a calm manner. A en-US sure way to put a deputy at ease is to en-US communicate your actions in advance en-US by telling him or her what you will be en-US doing before you move. If requested, en-US you must give the deputy your drivers en-US license and vehicle registration. Be en-US sure to tell the ocer where it is before en-US reaching for it, especially if you have it en-US tucked away in a glove box.en-US Finally, if you are issued a citation, you en-US will be asked to sign it. Remember, en-US signing the citation is not an admission en-US of guilt, but an acknowledgement that en-US you have received the citation. While en-US you may wish to contest the ticket, en-US keep in mind that your guilt or innoen-US-en-US cence can only be determined in court. en-US Protests about the situation cannot be en-US resolved in the street.en-US ere is much more information availen-US-en-US able from our website at www.sjso.org en-US and on our Facebook page. Please feel en-US free to contact me anytime at dshoar@en-US sjso.org if you have any questions. en-USBest practices if you are stopped en-US by a sheris deputy

As a local resident en-US she is often recognized and greeted en-US by congregation members while en-US shopping at Publix, dining out at en-US M Shack, and relaxing at the Splash en-US Park. en-US She and her family relocated from en-US Pittsburgh four years ago, when husen-US-en-US band Ron took a new job with CSX. en-US She works as a guidance counselor en-US at Pedro Menendez High School in en-US St. Augustine and is the mother of en-US two teens in the St. Johns County en-US School District. Advising and coachen-US-en-US ing young clients is close to her heart en-US as she has always valued the helping en-US profession; however, music and song en-US may be closest to her soul. en-US As one of ve children raised in en-US modest means, Cushman showed a en-US strong personal drive to succeed. An en-US aggressive early move was enlisten-US-en-US ing in the U.S. Air Force after high en-US school, serving four years. Her GI en-US Bill benets, supplemented with en-US part time jobs, loans, and music en-US scholarships, enabled her to earn a en-US bachelors degree from Florida State en-US University. She later followed up en-US with a Masters in School Counselen-US-en-US ing. While not a Florida native, she en-US was familiar with the state from been-US-en-US ing stationed here while serving. en-USQ: Tell us about your time en-US with the Air Force.en-USA: ose years helped me en-US grow up fast. I had a terric opporen-US-en-US tunity to audition and be selected to en-US become a member of the Air Forces en-US touring performance ensemble, Tops In en-US Blue. Composed of more than 30 vocalen-US-en-US ists, dancers, musicians and technicians, en-US our group performed an average of 120 en-US performances a year at more than 100 en-US base locations worldwide. Besides singen-US-en-US ing, I had to be in top physical shape en-US since we were our own roadies. We en-US would spend hours unloading 50,000 en-US pounds of equipment from two truck en-US trailers, set up our stage, perform, then en-US tear everything down the same day. One en-US precious memoir is a photo of me and en-US Bob Hope, the militarys most revered en-US entertainer.en-USQ: With a full time job as a school en-US counselor, choir leader, and mother of two en-US teens is there any time left over?en-USA: eres always time for music and en-US singing. Just ask my husband about my en-US (sometimes annoying) habit of loudly en-US breaking out in song as we ride in the en-US car when the radio plays a favorite en-US song. On the home front its great fun en-US doing Karaoke with neighborhood en-US friends. Professionally, I frequently sing en-US at celebrations marking lifes starts and en-US ends weddings and funerals. Many en-US of my fondest memories come from 10 en-US years as a wedding singer, both as a solo en-US performer and with a Pittsburgh area en-US group called Night Life. I recall absoen-US-en-US lute crazy times at weddings; working en-US with hungover drummers, putting up en-US with stage crashing guests grabbing the en-US mic, and occasionally impersonating en-US celebrities like Lady Gaga. en-USQ: What does the future hold?en-USA: ree wishes come to mind. One en-US involves travel. Having experienced a en-US wider world while touring with the Air en-US Force I want to expose our children to en-US some of this planets exciting places. en-US Ron and I have a bucket list of sights en-US to see. Another desire is to explore en-US acting in theater. Ive performed as a en-US singer all my life and am comfortable en-US being on stage, but Ive never acted per en-US se. In my younger years I had dreams en-US of singing on Broadway or perhaps in en-US opera, but life took a dierent turn. en-US Performing allows a person to temen-US-en-US porarily become someone else while en-US staying in their own skin. Its a liberaten-US-en-US ing feeling. Im beginning to research en-US the local theater scene to see whats out en-US there. Lastly, we are truly beach people en-US and someday would like to live on or en-US near the ocean. at one is a longer en-US range goal. en-USmembers, the observation of technicians, en-US and data accumulated by 33 traps set en-US weekly all around the county to detect the en-US presence of mosquitoes before spraying an en-US area.en-US One thing to keep in mind is that as long en-US as you see the green and white ashing en-US lights on one of our trucks going through en-US your neighborhood, chemicals are being en-US dispensed, Clark said. You just wont see en-US the big plume behind the truck because of en-US improvements in the chemicals we use and en-US how they are dispersed.en-US But the Anastasia Mosquito Control en-US District does more than just fog and spray en-US for existing larvae and mosquitoes. e en-US district sometimes receives grants to fund en-US research projects and student interns. is en-US year, Clark said a grant is funding research en-US for the Autocidal Gravid Oviposition trap en-US(AGO) project, which is a test trap deen-US-en-US signed by the Puerto Rican branch of the en-US United States Centers for Disease Control en-US and Prevention (CDC). Another research en-US project involves a sterile insect technique en-US used on male mosquitoes. en-US Clark, who has been the Education en-US Specialist for the Anastasia Mosquito en-US Control District for nearly 18 months, en-US knows more about mosquitoes than en-US most. She has a degree in wildlife biology en-US from Purdue University, after which she en-US participated in a surveillance project for en-US West Nile virus. She worked at the Florida en-US Department of Agriculture before coming en-US to the district. She enjoys education and en-US outreach and is available for informational en-US meetings with homeowners associations en-US and school groups. en-US Her top tip is Drain and Cover. She said en-US homeowners should keep a watchful eye en-US for any standing water in their yard, to inen-US-en-US clude even inside some types of plants. She en-US recommends that the water be dumped en-US at least once per week to cut down on en-US mosquito breeding. Also, people who are en-US outdoors should apply an EPA-approved en-US insect repellent, avoid being outside en-US around dawn and dusk, and wear loose en-US tting, light colored clothing.en-US Mosquitoes can bite through tight-tting en-US clothing, Clark said.en-US Visit www.amcdsjc.org for more informaen-US-en-US tion or to schedule an educational comen-US-en-US munity meeting for your group.en-USMosquitoesen-US cont. from pg. 1

It won the rst-ever Tony en-US Award presented for Best Musical in en-US 1949. en-US e story is actually a play-within-a-en-US play about actors touring with the stage en-US version of e Taming of the Shrew. en-US e characters switch back and forth en-US between their names and their Shakeen-US-en-US spearean counterparts. e lead roles en-US are portrayed impressively by Christoen-US-en-US pher Sanders and Traci Bair, as divorced en-US couple Fred Graham and Lilli Vanessi en-US who star as Petruchio and Kathaen-US-en-US rine. Despite their failed personal relaen-US-en-US tionship, they nd themselves drawn to en-US each other. Add in Freds dalliance with en-US ingenue Lois Lane/Bianca, portrayed en-US by Lauren Robinson, and her gambler en-US boyfriend, Bill Calhoun/Lucentio, en-US played by Matthew Alexander, as well as en-US two maa hit men who come to collect en-US Bills gambling debt from an unsuspecten-US-en-US ing Fred (Bill signed Freds name on an en-US IOU) and what ensues is a comedic case en-US of misunderstandings. Backstage antics en-US of the cast spill over into the on-stage en-US performance of e Taming of the en-US Shrew, with hilarious asides by the acen-US-en-US tors during their ad libbing. en-US Porters music provides a showcase for en-US powerhouse vocals by Sanders, Bair and en-US Robinson. Probably one of the most en-US well known numbers, Wunderbar, is en-US beautifully performed by Sanders and en-US Bair as their Fred and Lilli personas. en-US Bair as Lilli shows her vocal range and en-US comedic delivery with I Hate Men en-US and Sanders as Petruchio brings the en-US house down with Where is the Life en-US that Late I Led? Its about as expenen-US-en-US sive to live there as to buy specic en-US street drugs. I am addicted to roaming en-US the streets of downtown Manhattan, en-US Uptown Manhattan, and all around the en-US town. One way to lessen the expense en-US of getting around the island is to avoid en-US taxis and use the subway.en-US We native New Yorkers call NYC e en-US City as though there is no other city en-US in the world. e place knocks me en-US out. From Katzs Deli and the fascinaten-US-en-US ing Tenement Museum downtown to en-US Yorkvilles knock-out knockwurst. e en-US museums, the endless concerts that are en-US oered, the Broadway plays, the O en-US (and O-O) Broadway plays, grandien-US-en-US ose Central Park and mini vest-pocket en-US parks. eyre all great places to watch en-US people, but theres no ner place to en-US people-watch than the subway. New en-US York City is especially sweet at Christen-US-en-US mas time. I realize not everybody feels en-US this way. Yeah, I get it; its crowded.en-US It used to be that you could do a lot of en-US things on subways that are now, sadly, en-US verboten. Signs posted in the train cars a en-US while back, thanks to the Metropolitan en-US Transit Authority campaign Courtesy en-US Counts, are supposed to help teach city en-US riders the etiquette of traveling underen-US-en-US ground. Here are a few of the signs: en-US Do not eat. (Heck, even the airlines, en-US trains and buses let us bring food on en-US board.) No eating caused an outrage en-US by one passenger who felt the subway en-US is the quintessential place to eat a meal. en-US One rider sulked, Eating on the suben-US-en-US way really works well with my scheden-US-en-US ule. Couldnt he have settled for a nice en-US place in Central Park?en-US Do not spread your legs (men) or take en-US up too much space. Couldnt they have en-US come up with a more delicate phrase en-US than spread your legs? Such a tasteless en-US set of words. Not to put too ne a point en-US on this, it is also called manspreading, en-US which is in the Oxford English Dictionen-US-en-US ary.en-US One paper said, Poles are for your en-US safety, not your latest routine. A subway en-US car is no place to think SHOWTIME! en-US Of course at rush hour one can hardly en-US get a Kleenex out of a pocket because of en-US the people-crush. People getting o the en-US subway act as though the bell has rung en-US on Derby Day. en-US Do not put on makeup. Perhaps New en-US York is afraid people will stick mascara en-US in the eye of the person sitting next to en-US them. An eyeball gets poked and the en-US city is sued. en-US Having ridden the subways to work for en-US years when I was in my 20s, it never en-US dawned on me how hard subways must en-US be for elderly folks. All those stairs from en-US the street to get down to the escalators! en-US Nowadays, I myself struggle when I ride en-US the subway, but I still nd it fascinating en-US to see the mass of humanity struggling en-US to get from point A to point B.en-US Subway riders are sometimes victims en-US of crimes. Pocketbook stealing, wallet en-US snatching, perhaps a stabbing or two. en-US But the subways are not all about blood, en-US sweat and gore. YouTube shows wonderen-US-en-US ful ash dancers and singers performing en-US in the aisles. en-US I yearn for Ponte Vedra Beach after Ive en-US spent 10 days up there. I admit PVB en-US has become the grounds for my happy en-US dance, a refuge from the storm of city en-US life. I need to have earplugs like the en-US racehorse American Pharoah to block en-US out the noise of mid-Manhattan and the en-US subway.en-US County Commissioners, lets celebrate en-US that theres no money for subways in en-US Ponte Vedra Beach. en-USVisit us online aten-US
