It does not discriminate on the basis of race, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, and other school-administered programs. The Sarasota Liberal Yeshiva is a 501(c)3 non-prot agency. It is funded, in part, by a grant from The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee. FROM MOSES TO MOSSAD: OUR JEWISH SPIESMONDAYS 3:30 PM 4:45 PM Starting April 2 (Eight Weeks)One of the most popular genres of fiction today is spy thrillers. Our fascination with intrigue and mystery draws us to libraries and book sellers. However, many people do not know of the true heroism and intrigue of the many Jewish spies of history, both ancient and contemporary. This special course will include tales and reports of the success of Jewish spies whose primary goal was to save and protect Jews facing danger. With the Jewish people constantly under attack, many Jewish men and women took great risks to protect their fellow Jews from destruction. In every age, Jewish spies, through their heroism and daring, brought honor and dignity to the Jewish people in times of danger. Instructor: Marden Paru; fee $60.THE INFLUENCE OF WOMEN IN JUDAISMTUESDAYS 10:30 AM 11:45 AM Starting April 3 (Eight Weeks)Not enough credit has been given to the women of Judaism for their forbearing place in ancient Judaism. To some extent, even in the modern period, Jewish literature, ritual and custom emphasized the male role in Jewish life. But all of that was to change as enlightenment spread through Europe by the 18th century. We have much to learn from our matriarchs and unnamed woman of the Hebrew Bible as well as from the trend of egalitarianism in contemporary Judaism. Many of the gender roles have changed in Judaism where women often dominate the synagogue landscape and serve as activists in the broader Jewish community. This course will review the ever-changing role of women in Judaism and salute their achievements in maintaining Jewish continuity. Instructor: Marden Paru; fee $60.THE IMPACT OF YIDDISH CULTUREFRIDAYS 10:30 AM 11:45 AM Starting April 13 (Eight Weeks) While Yiddish has all but vanished as a living language, it is still spoken in cloistered communities primarily by ultra-religious Jewsfrom Borough Park in Brooklyn to Mea Shearim in Jerusalem. But in modern America, long gone is the familiar Yiddish shprach many of us heard as youth from our immigrant parents and/or grandparents. Yet, there is a renewal of interest in both Yiddish and Yiddish culture that is in reach of those who want access. This course will study the impact of Yiddish culture on the American scene as depicted in humor, comedy, contemporary literature and on the stage. There is no reason to recite the Kaddish for Yiddish and Yiddish culture. It still thrives here. Instructor: Marden Paru; fee $60. Inquire about multi-course discounts. Scholarships are also available.

Published by The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee www.jfedsrq.orgThe mission of The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee is to strengthen Jewish life and identity in our community, provide for Jewish people in need, and promote support for Israel. Art has been a fundamental part of Jewish life since our beginnings thousands of years ago. Bezalel record. Throughout our history, art has been used as a form of remembrance, dedication and inspiration. From colorful mosaics at the bath house in Masada, to intri cately carved synagogues in Morocco, to childrens drawings found at Theresienstadt during the Holocaust, to proud images of Jews prayour history. Much of this Jewish art has focused on the theme of love, friendship and shalom. It is the dream of our people to live in a world that is safe, welcoming and peaceful. In pursuit of that dream, The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee has invested in three commu nity-based programs in 2017 the Violins of Hope, which played to over 10,000 people of all ages throughout Sarasota-Manatee; Marc Chagall, Flow ers and the French Riviera: The Color of Dreams exhibit in partnership with Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, which runs through the end of July and is setting attendance records; and the Anne Frank: A History for Today exhibit, scheduled at the Selby Public Library in April and May for six weeks.
