Extreme choices produce dire consequences that can subsequently influence future

generations and, on a larger scale, an entire nation. In Korea between 1945 and

1953, many radical choices were made to stabilize the political situation. After

the liberation from Japanese rule in 1945, the U.S. and USSR divided Korea in half

and ruled in the North and in the South. Against many Koreans' wishes, in 1948,

the U.S. led a separate election in the South which ignited people's anger at being

Forced to be a divided country. The first president, Syngman Rhee, used extreme

measures to secure his power. He did all he could to remove any opposition,

communists or non-communists. He organized a system called the National

Guidance League to track and surveil any opponents.

However, the intention of the system was contorted, resulting in the killing

many innocent people. People also abused the situation for their own gain and

satisfaction. Between 1945 and 1953, estimates as high as 300,000 people were

falsely accused, imprisoned, and executed. They were taken to hills and mountains,

shot, and dumped in ditches. Many bodies were not identified or claimed because

of the fear of being labeled and persecuted as a Communist. Two of my grand

uncles were victims of being falsely accused and summarily executed. After the

deaths of two sons, overcome with grief, my great grandmother refused to eat

and died within a week.

There are still many people who have not been able to bury family members and

friends or openly mourn their deaths. This book is to remember all those innocent

victims during this tragic time in Korea.

o-2J'aj. (A ranyo) is a phrase from a famous Korean folk song called oef (Anrang)
op-t2]I(Anrang) is about missing a loved one who goes over a hill, never to return o-a-jaA
(arariyo) means to ache for missing someone deeply The poem, you are with me, represents
the three perspectives of victims, survivors, and my great grandmother
