FEATURE STORY Service Dogs 4 Servicemen is a nonprofit organization that provides trained service dogs to disabled military veterans. The Hero Project uses retired racing greyhounds in their training and placement program. The program has been in operation since last March and the outreach program, service dog training, takes place at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2500 in Hollywood. Classes are sponsored by Petropolis Park, a cageless daycare, boarding and training facility. Daniel De La Rosa is the owner of Petropolis, as well as vice president and director of Training for Service Dogs 4 Servicemen. Hero is a retired racing dog who was selected from Greyhound Pets of America by De La Rosa and President of Service Dogs 4 Servicemen, Sara DonadeiBlood. He is the first dog in the program. Florida has a massive population of retired racing greyhounds that can live long and healthy lives if placed in the right home. The racing career of a greyhound lasts only about three years and the life span of a greyhound is around 12 years, according to De La Rosa. The service dogs also assist veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, helping ease the social difficulties that arise from PTSD. De La Rosa said that the service dog will lead their owner through crowds of people in order to combat the anxiety that people with PTSD feel in large crowds. Service dogs can also stand or sit behind their owners to give them a sense of a protected space. Because the veteran is responsible for the care and continued training of their service dog, they cant live as shut-ins. De La Rosa is Karen Pryor Academy Certified, a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers and an evaluator for the Canine Good Citizen Program. He personally trains the dogs and will not certify dogs unless they pass the AKCs Canine Good Citizen Program so that the service dogs truly benefit the community. Before taking the American Kennel Clubs Canine Good Citizen test, owners sign the Responsible Dog Owners Pledge. If you want a real service dog, be prepared to do the work, De La Rosa said. Once trained, service dogs are eligible to anywhere with their master. Service Dogs 4 Servicemen is privately funded and depends solely on the generosity of their supporters. Money donated can be used to sponsor the expenses a veteran will incur for the service training and certification, as well as basic dog care items. The Hero Project is currently looking to match veterans in need of a service dog. For more information, visit http:// servicedogs4servicemen.com/ and www. petropolispark.com or call 954-2437189. The club, made up of volunteers, is a center for community service activities, fundraising, educational programs, socialization and networking. The walk is a fun-filled event with food, music, silent auctions and activities for kids. Known collectively as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis are painful, unpredictable diseases of the digestive tract. These diseases have periods of flare-ups and remission. More than 1.4 million children and adults suffer from Crohns and ulcerative colitis. Broward County resident, Noah Ramer was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2009 and is now 13. Since then his life has been filled with doctors appointments, blood tests, invasive medical tests, powerful drugs with side effects and finally a recent hospitalization that lasted 12 days. Baker added that Noah was selected as the Honored Hero because he truly exemplifies courage, commitment and perseverance in the face of adversity. Noah knows the struggles and challenges of living with a debilitating, unpredictable digestive disease every day. But that has not stopped him from keeping a positive outlook and persevering in his life and in pursuit of his goals. Noah is a talented musician who plays electric guitar and drums. He also is a serious bowler, participating in the AMF Youth League with a bowling average of 160. Noah is an inspiration to other patients who struggle to come to terms with their disease and is a role model for anyone looking to make a difference in the journey to cure digestive diseases. Noah said, I appreciate the chance to share my story and let other kids in the same situation know they are not alone. BY CARON CONWAY | Lead Correspondent Second-time-around mom Rita Santos was inspired by the birth of her twin daughters last summer to become a second-time-around business owner in Downtown Hollywood, where her new children's boutique, L&L Tiny Treasures, is scheduled to open March 23 at 2000 Harrison St., Bay #3. Santos, whose six children range in age from 24 years to 8 months, had owned Intuition, a successful women's clothing shop in Downtown, before closing it four years ago when the economy took a downturn. After twins Leighton and London Lakin were born, Santos decided to pursue a new retail venture that had been in the back of her mind for 13 years. L&L Tiny Treasures will carry new and gently used, "previously adored" merchandise, including clothing for newborns through size 6, and high-end brand furniture, strollers and accessories. The store also will offer stationery, Early Years learning toys that grow with the child, gift-wrapping and personalization services, Mommy & Me classes and a music-based Circle Time program. "You're going to have a nice variety, and there's a real warm feel to the store," said Santos, who is especially proud of her boys' clothing collection, which includes the Mud Pie and Alpha Industries lines. "I have five girls and one boy, and my challenge was always dressing my boy." Santos' husband and business partner Gerald Lakin said the idea for L&L Tiny Treasures was born in part from the challenges Santos experienced having to travel distances with young children to find quality merchandise and programming. We thought it would be a nice and necessary addition to have a place to go for children's items, as well as educational Mommy & Me programs that was convenient for all the parents in the surrounding area, Lakin said. Santos didn't think twice about opening a second business in the Downtown Hollywood. "When I started Intuition seven years ago, I just believed in Downtown Hollywood, and I could see it being what I envisioned it would be," said Santos, a 14-year Hollywood resident. I'm really excited about what's to come. Santos and Lakin are leasing their new storefront from Seattle Properties LLC, owned by Freddy Garcia and managing partner David Lopez. L&L Tiny Treasures recently opened at 2000 Harrison St., Bay #3 in Downtown Hollywood on Friday, March 23. Store hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Fridays. The shop will be closed Sundays to accommodate birthday parties and other private events. Call 954-921-3393 for additional information.BY CARON CONWAY | Lead Correspondent A unique taste of the Far East has come to Downtown Hollywood with the recent opening of Pho Vi, a familyoperated restaurant serving traditional Vietnamese cuisine at 1933 Hollywood Blvd. Owner D. Nguyen, a native of Tr Vinh, Vietnam, who moved to the United States as a child in 1981, opened Pho Vi March 20. The property is owned by S & M Lancaster Properties Inc. The new family business includes Nguyen's wife, Tam, and mother-in-law, Hoa Le, cooking authentic Vietnamese dishes, including the tasty rice noodle soup known as pho, hence the name of the establishment. The latter namesake of the restaurant is Nguyens daughter, "Vi." Pho Vi's menu also features appetizers, salads, sandwiches, entres and desserts. Among the selections are lemongrass beef noodle soup (bun bo hue), vermicelli with grilled pork (bun thit nuong) and honey lemongrass grilled pork chop on rice (com suon nuong), as well as chicken and shrimp dishes, and desserts that include the popular sweet treat "Three Color Bean." Everything is homemade on site using the freshest ingredients and timehonored family recipes, as well as updated versions Hoa Le was introduced to as part of her professional culinary training. "Our food is very healthy. I think we have a very good product, and Im confident about my food," said Nguyen, who worked in his uncle's Chinese restaurant in Downtown Hollywood since 1996. For Nguyen, who moved to the City that same year, opening his new business in the historic arts and entertainment district was a natural move. "I've been working Downtown for many years, and I see the city is very alive," he said. "I see a lot of people around here, and they are very supportive and very friendly." Pho Vi is the newest addition to Downtown Hollywood's eclectic family of international eateries offering Latin, French, Italian, Irish, Greek, Mediterranean, Asian, Mexican and Caribbean cuisines. Pho Vi is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Broward County Commissioner Chip LaMarca has been selected as a co-chair of the Six Pillars Strategic Planning Process that has recently launched in Broward County. The Six Pillars process is led by The Florida Chamber Foundation at the state level and is meant to help communities prosper and create high paying jobs. HOLLYWOOD GAZETTE STAFF PICK OF THE MONTH:Mickey Byrnes: Downtown Hollywood Oh Mickey, youre so fine... youre so fine, we somehow find ourselves in your establishment every time we venture Downtown. This months staff pick is Mickey Byrnes. While you may know them as a traditional Irish pub, their appeal goes way beyond endless pints of Guinness, Shepherds Pie and sports. We are particularly fond of the snakebites a cool combination of cider and beer. So if youre a girl who doesnt like beer, this is a pleasant alternative, just be careful theyre so sweet and smooth you may forget the alcohol content. The ambiance is warm and easy on the eyes, dark wood throughout and dim lights the perfect lunch escape from the workday world of ringing phones and florescent lights. While owner Mark Rowe is heavily involved in the success of the place and can frequently be found hands on behind the bar, his staff bring something so special and rare in South Florida that it keeps us coming back; they actually care. From service to food, this is never hit or miss experience. Consistently above par, Mickey Byrnes delivers an exceptional dining experience in the heart of Downtown Hollywood that raises the bar for neighboring establishments to match. J.S. Mickey Byrnes owner Mark Rowe Erin Scissors and Miriam Cronkhite from Hollywood Gazette staff enjoy a snakebite. 14 APRIL 2012

By Sara Case and Laurie Schecter THE BALANCE SHEE T BLOGbalancesheetblog@gmail.com Hollywood has quietly rolled out an eye-popping economic development policy one that has solid intellectual underpinnings and a promising track record in other locations. This is the first time, to the best of our knowledge, that our City has formulated an economic development strategy that focuses not only on improving the Citys economic base but also on raising the earning power of Hollywood residents. The new approach is based on the concept of the industry cluster that is, a geographical concentration of companies that are interconnected by the markets they serve and the products they produce. Silicon Valley with its thousands of high-tech companies is the most obvious example. The big question for us is this: Does Hollywood have the necessary assets to create an environment in which industry clusters will grow and prosper? To answer that question, we start with what we already have. Take for example, our Citys coastal location between Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach: three shipping ports, three airports, ready access to the Florida Turnpike and I-95. Listen to Cathy Swanson-Rivenbark, our Citys economic development guru, applying this approach to Hollywood. She says we must understand and capitalize on whats already here the high-growth, high quality industries that are located in Hollywood (such as Life Sciences, Marine Industries, Aviation/Avionics, Logistics/Transportation and Tourism) and the cross-clustering of these important industries. She adds that these are unique assets on which to build our development strategy. Groups of closely related and complementary industries operating in Hollywood would reinforce each other. In addition, they would result in more and better jobs for our residents, the great majority of whom now work outside Hollywood. She goes on to name the Joe DiMaggio Childrens Hospital, Nova Southeastern Universitys National Coral Reef Institute and Barry Universitys College of Health Sciences Campus in Downtown Hollywood as thriving Hollywood industries that have remained stable and strong during the recent recession and are projected to grow in the future. Meanwhile, in furtherance of the new economic development policy, city staffer Anthony Grisby has been studying Hollywood demographics, documenting such troubling statistics as an unemployment rate higher and median income lower than nationally. Hes also documented that health sciences, for example, can provide many entrylevel jobs for high school graduates, as well as job training and advancement opportunities that can help to increase Hollywoods dwindling middle class. He demonstrates that a focus on business recruitment in health sciences would build on the resources we already have and provide more employment opportunities for Hollywood residents. To support this new approach, the City has combined its economic and community development functions in a new Department of Community and Economic Development. Since the Director of the former Community Development Department resigned last year, the position has remained vacant. A search is now underway for a director of the new combined department. Keep your eyes trained in its direction to spot what we hope will be significant, positive changes to community development, economic development and redevelopment in Hollywood. The Balance Sheet Blog is written and edited by Sara Case and Laurie Schecter. Both are Hollywood residents who have been citywide activists for years. Laurie owns a small business in Hollywood. Sara is a retired attorney. by Shondelle-Solomon-Miles The other day I was in the checkout line at the supermarket. A lady standing behind me said to me: In my next life, I hope I can have a body like yours. I thanked her for the compliment and replied, Why in your next lifetime; why cant you do it now? The woman looked at me like I had three horns growing out of my head, and said: Yeah right, thats a lot of work and Im just not motivated to do what it takes. Oh boy...here we go again with the Im not motivated excuse. I swear if I had a dollar for every time I heard, Im fat, unhealthy and out of shape because I am unmotivated I would be a VERY rich woman. Motivation simply means the desire to do something. However, isnt it true you do things every day that you dont necessarily DESIRE to do. You go to work, you take a shower, you do your laundry, you clean your house, you grocery shop, and the list continues. The point is you do things EVERY day that you are not motivated to do; therefore, motivation is not necessarily a REQUIREMENT. To get something done, you just have to see that there is a NEED for that something to be done and that there are negative consequences to that something NOT being done. Imagine if your boss asked you to complete a project by the end of the day and your response was, No thank you. Not likely, right? At least not if you wanted to still have employment. So youre thinking, Shondelle, I dont NEED to workout or eat healthy, but I do have to work or I wont have a place to live and I have to make dinner for my kids because thats my parental responsibility. So yes, you dont NEED to move your body on a regular basis, but there WILL be consequences, and I promise you they wont be ones you will particularly like: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, clothes that dont fit, joint pain, no sex drive, low self-confidence and self-esteem, poor quality of life, weight gain....you get my point. People often ask me how do I stay motivated to workout with such consistency. My answer is always, motivation is NOT what drives me habits and NEEDS do. I do admit to enjoying exercise more than the average person, but there is MANY a day I am NOT motivated to move my body with any intensity whatsoever. I understand the consequences of NOT taking care of my body; therefore, its not something I THINK about doing its simply something I DO. Motivational speaker Jim Rohn said, Motivation gets you started; habits keep you going. I would say it this way: ACTION gets you started, habits keep you going and if motivation happens to be part of the equation, well thats just icing on the cake. MOST of all, and you dont want to hear this, if youre simply unmotivated you dont have to worry about FAILING...and ultimately thats your biggest FEAR. If you never start, you can never fail. And truth be told, for many people, it is easier to be fat, unhealthy and out of shape than it is to risk the possibility of failure. If you knew with 100 percent certainty that it was IMPOSSIBLE for you to fail the attainment of your health and fitness goals, do you think you could muster up the motivation to take the first step? I think so. Because if success was certain, the element of fear would no longer exist, and consequently motivation or lack thereof would be a NON-issue. You know you will go to work and then come home, or youll take a shower and move on with your day. Youre certain of the outcome. Human beings NEED certainty in fact, we THRIVE on it. So whats the solution to overcoming lack of motivation regarding working out, eating healthy or anything else for that matter? Here it is. Feel the fear and do it anyway! Acknowledge youre scared, accept the uncertainty of the outcome, then lace up your sneakers, dust off your dumbbells and get moving! You see, when you embrace the fear, it loses its power completely. It is the resistances that keep you immobilized, or as you perhaps call it, unmotivated. Take action anyway whether you FEEL like it or not because you NEED to do it and because the consequences of you NOT doing it are VERY serious ones. I PROMISE you, when you can act in spite of your fear, all the stuff that you think is holding you back, (lack of motivation, not enough time, cant afford it, too many injuries, blah, blah, blah) will vanish right before your eyes. If you need help taking that first step, I can help you. Shondelle Solomon-Miles is the owner of Synergize Home of CrossFit 954. You can reach her or schedule a FREE consultation by visiting www. The 15 firefighters completed eight weeks of grueling training to gain admission into the department. They were selected from a pool of more than 500 applicants based on qualifications and test scores. We are all just beginning our careers in the City of Hollywood, Hewett told the firefighters. I have seen the hard work and commitment each of you has already brought to the job. You are joining an impressive department, with a Chief and command staff committed to excellence. Each of you has worked consistently to prepare yourselves for the job ahead. BY BRETT DALY | EDITOR brett@hollywoodgazette.comLandmark Funeral Home, a Hollywood staple since 1962, celebrated 50 years as a family owned and operated business last month. On March 8, manager Kevin S. Rieth and Bereavement Services director Valerie Panciera-Rieth hosted an open house for the community to celebrate the milestone, and Hollywood dignitaries and residents offered their unyielding support. It was quite the celebration, Valerie said. We had over 400 people attend. It was a beautiful dream-come true for my parents. In 1962, Valeries parents, Diane and Irving Panciera, opened the funeral home, transforming Hollywoods landscape forever. Then called Panciera Funeral Home, it has transformed to include much more than funeral services. Landmark also offers a chapel, a second floor with meeting rooms and event space, and a series of special programs and presentations free of charge to civic groups, schools, clubs and organizations. These programs range from financial planning seminars to grief support groups. All services focus on providing genuine care and concern for the individual, for the family and for the community. And while the funeral home has grown tremendously since its beginnings in Hollywood Hills back when it contained nothing more than land crabs, palmetto bugs and palm trees, Valerie said they still focus on servicing the community. The open house celebrated this commitment to the community started 50 years ago. Through the years, my parents have been very influential in the community, Valerie said. We celebrated and honored them. During the event, Mayor Peter Bober presented Diane and Irving with a commemorative plaque while the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce spoke about Landmarks contributions to the community. Nativity Catholic Church Pastor Patrick Murnane performed the invocation, and a solo violinist and acoustic guitarist set the atmosphere with their music. A special performance by the Nativity School Choir also honored the founders. The evening capped off with a champagne toast in the funeral homes foyer. It was quite the event, Valerie said. Im still in awe. Valerie attributes her family business success to their commitment to excellence and their circle of care. She said she incorporates everything she learned from her parents, including honesty and trustworthiness, in operating the funeral home. Valeries parents taught her the importance of faith, family, friends and service to others, and she ensures to highlight these values at Landmark. And because she grew up in the funeral industry, she has a natural affinity for the family business. It helped teach her that life is a journey, not a destination. There arent too many businesses that I know of that have opened and remained family operated for 50 years, Valerie said. I look forward to passing on this tradition to my daughters. Dear Ms. Cronkhite: RE: Letter from Dog Dazed and your response (March 2012 issue) Public health concerns are paramount on the beach. Residual fecal matter in some ways is more sinister than a pile of poop that was left behind. No trial period for dogs on the beach or Broadwalk is needed. It makes no sense. As your letter makes it clear, fines would have to be increased. And, even in Jupiter Beach, volunteers were needed because people are so bad that even the people in Jupiter are having a difficult time. You are correct in stating that this issue has been decided by the community already. A clear, consistent message is what is needed to make the job of enforcement easier for everyone. A trial period would be a disaster. Signs would be needed to warn beach users of the hidden unsanitary conditions on Hollywood Beach/Broadwalk for liability purposes. Busy days on the beach have not had one area not sat upon or occupied by someone or some child. It starts early--people come and go. By the end of the day, every spot is used. You are dangerously in error and your motivations seem questionable to think you have done enough by your simple act of scooping up the visible fecal matter and leaving the not-visible fecal matter and urine behind. The danger lurks. A rule about dogs on the beach is just another of many. Stop with the silliness when you say that dog owners are being treated like second-class citizens. Rules from our city, county, state and federal government are so many that no one knows them all. But, living in a society of laws does not make any of us a secondclass citizen. No dogs or pets allowed. HOLLYWOOD BEACH and the BROADWALK are CLEAN. Respectfully, Miriam and Robert Spiegel Hollywood Beach Residents Hello Miriam, I read with interest your response to Dog Dazed in the Letters to the Editor section in the last issue of the Hollywood Gazette. I echo Dog Dazed sentiments in every way. I, too, am appalled at the total discrimination to dog owners when it comes to sharing a very public area with us and our pooches. I am a responsible dog owner and see no reason why I should not be allowed to stroll with my dog whilst enjoying the various services and amenities provided at the Broadwalk. Why not install pick up stations such as the ones lining both North Lake and South Lake, as well as various other parks and venues? Whats the difference between the Broadwalk and, say, Downtown Hollywood? To those who do not pick up after the dogs, give out fines and increase revenue to the City! However, I have to say the vast majority of dog owners, especially those who bother taking their dogs out, are indeed responsible. I say lets at least try it and see how it goes! Can you get me in touch with Dog Dazed? Id like to discuss the possibility of joining forces and taking this issue to the Mayors office. Thank you for your time. Eva Johnston Dear editor, I do have a concern about something in Hollywood. All the white lines in the streets are worn off or badly worn. People do not know where the middle of the road is or where the bike lane is because of this. They need to re-paint the lines in many places, in particular, along Hollywood Boulevard. Hollywood needs to scrape up enough money to pay for this to be done. Jeff Gillespie Dear editor, Elections will be here before you know it, and it should be obvious by now that Mayor Peter Bober s track record proves him a champion! Our City has never seen a more sensible, responsible or driven leader. He has faced economic crises. He has faced budgetary challenges. He has faced the previous administrations shortfalls. All of these, and more, have been resolved because of him. And, being a resident of District 6, I have nothing but praise for Commissioner Linda Sherwood. She has fought valiantly for our quality of life. Streets and sidewalk repairs, restoring Zinkil Park, and most of our economic concerns have been addressed by her will to serve. Vote accordingly this year, Mrs. Mary Lamont EMAIL YOUR LETTERS TO THE EDITOR TO MIRIAMHOLLYWOODGAZETTE.COM. Meet Your Hollywood Real Estate SpecialistBuying, selling or renting? By Jennifer Sandomir As the summer months approach, the days are becoming increasingly hotter and so is the campaign for Kevin Biederman, who is running for City of Hollywood Commissioner for District 5, which encompasses the neighborhoods of Driftwood and Boulevard Heights in the western area of Hollywood. With crime and exhausting amounts of door-to-door salespeople infiltrating the area, it is more difficult than ever to introduce yourself to neighbors and let them know you are running to represent them, Biederman said. Biederman came up with an idea to ride in an ice-cream truck throughout the neighborhoods to introduce himself, hand out materials and offer free icecream to residents. Biederman rode around on March 19 to invite residents to his Meet and Greet event which took place at the Goal Line Sports Bar and Grill at 6969 Taft St. on March 20. The effort proved to be a success in reaching those who ordinarily would not be interested in local politics. One Driftwood resident who was admittedly not registered to vote, vowed to register just to vote for Beiderman after a conversation with him. Biedermans ice-cream truck campaigning will continue throughout the summer months, and he will additionally be holding neighborhood block parties to introduce himself to neighbors in advance of the Nov. 6, 2012 election. Biederman said he understands the importance of appealing to voters in non-traditional ways in order for them to be able to make the best decision possible on Election Day. I have a long history of serving the community and sincerely wish to represent my neighbors in District 5. Elected as a Commissioner for the Central Broward Water Control District, since 2000, the position has offered me a wealth of knowledge and experience which will allow me to properly serve the City as a whole and my neighbors should be aware of this. What better way to get the word out? Everyone likes ice-cream, right? Biederman said. Long-time Driftwood resident Kim Viehl said, This is a great idea. If I didnt already know Kevin Biederman and have been around to observe all of the positive things he has done for the community, this would be the best way I could think of to send me a message of who he is and what hes done. My kids love ice cream. My fianc and I are homeowners in Hollywood Lakes and live only a few blocks from the Hollywood Circle. We truly enjoy the Lakes and Hollywood Beach areas. I walk to Downtown Hollywood, and we rides bikes on the Beach Broadwalk. I have worked in hightechnology focusing on the advertising and publishing for 20 years. My world is composed of press releases, Google Search, banner ads, magazine ads and TV commercials. I want more technology companies to call Hollywood home. I want a Fry's Electronics on US-1, a book store, a comic and games shop, a cheese vendor Downtown. I want community Maker sheds set up on Dixie Highway. I want to attract more engineers, designers, cyber-security experts and hot-shops. My goal would be to visit and call upon technology companies large and small from Florida, California, Texas. Especially South Florida. It doesn't matter if those companies are thinking of relocating...Yet. Read more at RickValdez.com. Friend me at facebook.com/rick.valdez to follow the campaign. 2. What I will do for you. For the business community, I promise to keep taxes and fees low and ensure that no one business is favored over another. From the smallest ice cream store to the largest entertainment complex, the business environment will be a level playing field for all. For the residents of District 1, I promise to promote our neighborhood and to encourage family-friendly development along Federal Highway. For the City, I promise to promote Hollywood as the Silicon Beach of Florida. I will work to introduce our City as the premier location to set up shop. I am truly interested in the views of the civic leaders of Hollywood. Patient and polite, I will hear every visitor in the Council Chambers without interruption. I'll negotiate in good faith and weigh each argument fully. I'll work to ensure that the entire budget of $340 million is managed well. According the the City's own consultants, Hollywood has the highest property tax rate among Broward County cities. I will use my vote to hold that number down until Hollywood has the 'average' tax rate of Broward County. Not the lowest because we want to enjoy great schools and services. But never again, the highest. Commissioner Patty Asseff has been a resident of Hollywood for more than 40 years and is a civic activist, community leader and business person. She serves on many boards and organizations, including Chair of the South Florida Regional Planning Council, former Chair of the Hollywood Planning and Zoning Board, former President of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, Chair of the Gold Coast Clean Air Coalition, President of the South Florida Ballet Theatre and a board member of the Hollywood Art and Culture Center. She also is a graduate of Leadership Hollywood. The Asseffs pride themselves on being a homegrown Hollywood family. Commissioner Asseff is married for more than 40 years to Dr. Abraham Asseff, a long-time practicing dentist on Hollywood Beach. They first lived in Hollywood Hills and have resided in the Hollywood Lakes neighborhood for more than 20 years. The Asseffs three children were all born and raised in Hollywood and attended both Nativity Catholic Church and School and St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Daughter, Andrea, now practices dentistry with her father. Their son, Michael, also lives in Hollywood and is a local business owner. Their oldest daughter, Shawndra Asseff Baird, lives in Sarasota and is a real estate broker. The Asseffs greatest joy is their beautiful granddaughter, McKenzie. Commissioner Asseff has been a Realtor for more than 22 years. Her first position was with Portner and Portner Real Estate, which helped her launch a very successful career. She currently works with Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate and specializes in the residential luxury home market. Patty is listed as the top 3 percent of all Coldwell Banker agents nationwide and in the top 100 in Florida. Who is Hollywoods District 1 Commissioner Incumbent Patty Asseff?
