Abstract:
MassMine: your access to big data: MassMine is an academic tool that opens access to “big data” for in-depth social media research. Academia and industry often ask different questions and use different methods when conducting research, but current academic research on social media is limited to and shaped by the tools of industry. Academic research must have the freedom to ask a broad range of open questions, based on flexible tools that are built by academics, and MassMine enables thorough social media analysis without current industry limitations. There are three problems facing researchers interested in studying the content or structure of social media: (1) there is a high financial cost to access historical data, (2) if data access is purchased through industry sources, pre-filtered and already-visualized data is usually provided as opposed to full access to “raw” data, and (3) the pre-filtered and alreadyvisualized data focuses primarily on marketing and brand management issues and this restricts research questions to those that serve a limited commercial scope. A solution to this problem is accessing data through social network APIs (application programming interfaces). APIs are provided free of charge, and APIs give programmers access to broad social network data for application and software development. API data may be freely collected, archived, and analyzed for academic research. The problem with API access is that it requires an advanced knowledge of programming in order to systematically mine data from social networks. MassMine provides a user-friendly interface that eliminates the programming learning curve, providing selectable options for easily mining data from social network APIs, allowing researchers to create individualized data archives to study social media. MassMine has a customizable export tool that quickly sorts and aggregates data for use with popular visualization and analysis software—such as Microsoft Excel’s new Power View suite. MassMine is an open source tool that seamlessly transitions from data mining to visual analysis without having to learn advanced statistical or coding techniques.
