Introduction

A contact insecticide must come into intimate contact with an
insect in order to act on it. Ilany insects are covered irth small hairs
or chitinous integument which are not easily: wetted, and very small in-
sects are likewise wetted with difficulty by aqueous sprays. In order to
secure a good contact `bet-.'oen the insect and the aqueous solution or sus-
pension of insecticide it is often necessary to add to the water a ma-
terial tha-t will increase its wetting power. Voricus fatty-acid soaps are
commonly used for this purpose, and in other types of insecticidal rT'-hrra-
tions. However, fatty-acid soaps have definite disadvont.ges for use 7ith
insecticides, such as incompatibility with limre-sulfur, bordeaum mixture,
calcium arsenate, am-d other compou'i s containing calcium. luch of the ef-
fectiveness of a fatty-acid soap is lost in h ird water owing to the pre-
cipitation of insoluble calcium and marneoium soaeps. Moreover, soaps con-
taining. free alkali or which hydrolyze re:.iily -'it-. the formation of free
alkali can not be used with pyrethruci, de: ri or cu'be, ?-cv.Le the active
principles of these plants are easier oeoon-osed int-to inert comrourds in
the pr,3eence of ralli-.e colutic:.s.

zacaase of these limitations o_ ordivr-r scps, various s if';ed
and sulfonated org'niic compounds h:T3 ]r 2 ly coi.e into Ise. A brpif 2*c-
count of the chemistry of these conpo'ixd3 has "cen ive c-y PBo rh: (Jorr.
Econ. Ent. 3D: 522. 1937.) These sulfated anr s--Ilfonated conpc-.ds re-
extensively used in the textile in(dustr--- as _- -to ar! wett- "t
agents. Some of them are used in pl.ce of fatLy-acid soaps as wetti.L:
agents or emulsifying agents in insectici"al *-r-arationE, and do-...t....
others are suitable for this purpose. In addiItion some of them, for ex-
ample, sodium lauryl sulfate ^d bDuty?--;:-lpheo s-u' _ulfjor te, ther-
selves possess insecticidal value, especially n'v>'i.-; ehids.

There are a great nunber- of proprietary detergents, v'ettini, 'is-
persing, and emulsifying agents which have been used or which may po. t-icyd

be r -2 use in the formulation of conritact insecticides or in other types of
I s-cticid.l preparations. The pr3sot ... apor, which is a revision of Bureau
of "tenolor C:". Plant uarantin3 rpublicatio Z-5.426, presents an extensive
list of such mliterials which includes, but Ig .;ot restricted to, the various
sulf' tLd an.d sulfQnatsd organle compounds mentione-d .-,ov3. As newv ones ap-
a-ar f_-r2uently, no claim is mado that the list is complete. The ones in-
eluded e.re those which have come to the wvrriterts attention and concerning:
;.-.'ch s',-me information is available as to chemical or physical properties.

Under "Surface properties" are given the surface tension (S.T.),
interfacial tension (I.T.), and s.-readin- coefficient (S.C.) of 1-pe-rcent
a-ueous solutions dispersionss) on a refined mineral (meicinal) oil, all
in r-:-.s "r cm. at 25 C., except as otherwise noted. (See Ind. 3nC. Chem.
27: 1219. I?'Z.) The spreading, coefficient is a measure of the wetting
power of t'.-. solution for a surface of the oil employed as a standard, .and
is equal to the surface tension of the oil (30.5 d--3s peor cm.) less the sum
of the su-'ace -zd interfacial tensions; theo greater its algebraic value,
the greater the fretting povror. For example, a product with a spreading co-
efficient of -5 dynos per cm. is a better wetter than one -,ith a coefficient
of -23, but is surpause by one with a coefficient of +5. However, the
spreadir. coefficient-s at one concentration do not necessarily indicate the
relative values at other c-)ncentrations, or for other surfaces.

The inforimnit coi tai-ed in this compilation has been cttained
chiefly from the manufacturers of the -oroducts listed or from the literature.
'he Dep-ortment of Agriculture assures no 'esonsi'boility for the correctness
of the statements included herein; norcovor, it does not recom::ien-d a:" of
the yr ..'cts mentioned.
