Mrs. Mary Mason Jacksonville, March 14, 1837
Warren, R. I.

Dear Mother:

I take the present time to send these few lines to you to inform

you that I am well and hope that this will find you all the same though I fear

that something is the matter for I have not heard from you for three months

so I hope that you will write me as soon as you get this. Everything is

S here though the Indians keep fighting, yet the Company that I

belong to is discharged our time being out, and I don't think that I shall

join another for I have so much other business to attend to. I want to

close up my affairs to come home by the first of June. I expect that you

are all freezing there but it is so warm here that I am writing with the

doors and windows open and no fire. Give my love to Sarah and Ann-Mariah.

Nothing more at present. I would write more but I have got two

more letters to write.

I remain your son

J. B. Mason

Miss Sarah Ann Mason
Warren, R. I. _ Hill Plantation
April 4, 1838

Dear Sister

I have just received your kind .: of the 19th of February. It gave
!9

me much pleasure to hear from you, though I am very sorry to hear that little

is so sick but I hope that she will be better before this reaches you.

I am glad that J health is good and yours. My own is poor. I have been

in the army so much during this war that I am most broke down and I don't know

when the war will end. At present I am out of the army and if I can help it,

I shaint join again though my friends are all anxious that I should keep my rank.

I have left the town and moved out to my country seat in hopes that it will be a

benefit .t to my health. I shall move back again this fall. I have

purchased me a beautiful house in town for which I have three thousand dollars. I

am now building a large hotel in town that will cost me five or six thousand

dollars. As soon as I can leave it I will come home if I don't stay but one week

so to see you all once more. I think that I can get away sometime in July and

you or M -r,- one of you must come back home with me. Our money here is

all Florida and it is impossible to get any Northern money or I should of sent

you some long ago but they is a .'i going to New /': here in a few

days and I will make arrangements with him to,.-. ^' you some. Every thing is

very_ 4.dulhere on account of the war. The Indians keep a murdering and burning

everything that they come at and I don't know when it will end. There is no

safety ten miles from town and I am obliged to keep all my servants armed while

I am here in the country. I can sell my property here for twenty thousand

dollars though. I think this fall it will fetch twenty five thousand. If I can

buy the-,- a..... farm in the neck I will sell out here and come back to the

North to live again. I will give ten thousand dollars for it if I can get it.

Give my love to all William Morris family and to Uncle Edwards. If you ever see

my old play-mate Edwin ; tell him that I should like very much to see him

and I hope before summer is out to have the pleasure of it. Tell O). that she

must not get discouraged and think that I am never coming home again for if I

live I will come. Tell little that I pray God that she will get well

so to come home with me this fall. And for yourself Dear Sarah accept the

best wishes of your affectionate brother.

J. B. Mason

PS

I wish that you would write to me every week.

Miss Sarah Ann Mason
Warren, R. I. ,, September 18, 1839

Dear Sister

I take the present time to ?. these few lines to you to inform

you that I am well and hope that they will find you and and Maria

all well. I have received but one letter from you in five months and I am afraid

that something has happened to you by your not writing. Therefore as soon as

you receive this I hope that you will answer it. We have here the

Indians are still very bad about the country. Some of my men are out chasing

on them all the time. I hope that the government will do something this

winter to end the war as we shall have to give up the country to them for nobody

is safe in it. When a family lies down at night they don't know but they will

all be murdered before morning. Nobody is safe in traveling or sleeping. For

my part I wish that the devel had the whole of them. My time is out in four

weeks from this and whether Gen. Tailor will keep the company in *.< months

longer or not I can't tell. If he does it will be the last of April before I

shall get discharged. I shall dislike very much to serve all winter. If I do I

shall sell out my furniture and rent my house out for a year for if I live next

spring I am coming to the North to spend the summer. My hotel is getting along

nicely. I am in hopes to have it finished this winter. Though I have been

from home so much that I I -t. l o attend to it. But if Gen. Tailor

lets me off when my time is out I shall have a chance to finish it. I have

subscribed to the Jacksonville paper for ... <^ months for you and I wish that

you will let me know is you get it. You say that I am trying to get a name,

Sarah. I am and I will get it and I will get a grave no

I came here to make money and to get fame. So far I have been successful in both

and when I get through here I am coming home to enjoy it but I am nearly worn out.

When I come you need not look for a young hule hearty youth. Look for a little

old dried up man and you will see your brother.

Write me a good long letter and let me know how all our country friends are. Howis

:,William Morris's family, Uncle Edwards and all the folks in the Neck. Tell

me who all lives there, who owns all the land, who has died and who has got

married and all that sort of thing. Tell the old folks that I long

to see them all. I want to <& ? ', over the green meadows of

my birth. As for my good friend Mason Barney, I suppose that he hopes every

paper will fetch the news that the red-skins have tommehawked me but I hope

that I shall see him before summer is out as for my grand -tFather he is too

trifeling to think of, '-as I find out whether I have to go into the

service or not. I will write to you but don't forget to answer this. Direct

it to Jacksonville.

Nothing more at present.

I remain Dear Sarah
your affectionate Brother,

J. B. Mason

Dear Sister,

Your kind favour of the z f come safe to hand. It gave me

great pleasure to hear that you are all well. I should of written you

before but I have been so busy

I have fifteen or twenty letters to answer besides my other writing which

occupies nearly all my time. This is one of the most fast places

that I was ever at. There is nothing but balls and parties in high life

and being a member of the legislation here I have to attend them all.

There are 3 or 4 invitations laying on my table all the time. It is

nothing but one round of pleasure and I am tired of it. I want to get

back to my company. I shall leave here this *X^i week for the East.
(r
It is only two hundred miles from here home. If nothing happens to me

I can go in five days. The weather is like summer here. The peach trees

are all in bloom for 2 weeks past. Green peas are two feet high. They

begin to throw off woolens and put on summer clothes. I am writing with

my coat off and the door and windows all open. This is one of the most

delightful climates that ever was. There is none of your freezing and

shivering to death with the cold. You put me in mind of your and sisters

Mulberry trees. I found that they was going down and I had a good offer

to sell my plantation and I did so your trees and allf'rrees are not worth

< 0^-y^--^ A f--. Jp fact there is no sale for them at all however

I owe you and Mariah (?)for your part which I must pay you both when

I come North, but here is the pinch. I expect you will say pray sir when

are you a coming. Now that is easier ask than answered, for I don't know

when myself. Should I consult my own wishes about it I would be there in

May but my whole interest is so identified with the people of this territory

or that part that I live in that it would give me pain to separate from

them. They put all confidence in me that can be put in man and while

they are in trouble with this murderous war hanging over them it would

be unjust in me to leave them after they have done so much for me and

still are doing all they can for my advancement. Their young men will

follow me before they will any other Commander and the old does the same.

I have in my company now some men who have three and four sons with them.

Father and sons both look up to me for protection and with such people who

will follow me through all danger (and some of us has been side by side

when the Indians (.67t". have -i. ,h:.. by our heads as the 4e,.

/)e, c.4)-. night or day y I not to be happy with them

whenever I talk of leaving them the old men oppose it as much as they

would their own son and they is some of the young men that I have been

with so much both in and out of danger that I think as much of them as

I <---/ of a brother had I remained in my native state. When should

I of took ;-" a seat in the Halls of its Legislature. The

made

I have made myself respected and independent therefore both interest

and affection bind me to this country. I want to sell my town property

and put it into lands and stock and go to planting as soon as I can with

safety. I have had an offer for some but I want to sell it all together

if I can and for that purpose I shall advertise it. I can't tell yet

whether I shall go in the army or not. If I do I shall try to get a

furlough for five or six weeks to come and take a look at you. Tell
r'aV'C that I shant forget her galoshes. I will fetch her the best pair

that I can get in New York. The Indians are getting worse than they

ever was. They are killing everybody that they come across. Give

my respects to all inquiring friends.

Yours truly,

J. B. Mason

Miss Sarah Ann Mason

Dear Young lady

I have received your letter of the 12th and am sorry

I did not get it before. I am also sorry you neglected to come on directly

after receiving my letter as I suggested. Your brother's estate would then

have been placed in your hands. But you have now neglected it too long.

Letters of Administration will now be given to the most worthy applicant.

To this you wished me to object. I have no earthly power to make the least

objection. Besides the creditors of the estate wish a settlement as soon as

the law provides. I have remained in the country the last eighty (??) weeks

and neglected my own private affairs for no other cause than a wish for the

good of my friends estate. I too must wish it off of my hands and given to some

person who has the power to settle it. Property of any kind cannot improve by

having no owner and for the good of the estate it ought soon to be settled.

You inquire for the healthy season. Tis healthy at all seasons of the year

at this place. Both Northerners and Southerners can enjoy good health in this

place at any period of the year.

Respectfully
Your friend & .o-_ ..

Thomas G. Turner, Esq. October 8th, 1840

Dear Sir ..

By request in your letter to W. B. Rop of September 26th I write

you, relative to the Estate of Capt. James B. Mason of which I have been

appointed Administrator and am now executing the duties of the appointment.

As to---the property of the Estate it is impossible, at present to ascertain

what it will amount to. The personal property has been sold at auction. The

sales of which amounted to about $1900 dollars, but the real estate will not

be disposed of at present. Money here at this time is scarce, and times hard,

in consequence of which, to force an immediate sale of real estate would not

only be injudicious but probably unsatisfactory to all parties interested in

the property. The real estate left by Capt. Mason in the Twon of Jacksonville

consists of a large wharf, two stores, one two story dwelling house, a large

hotel unfinished, and the lots of land on which said building stand. There are

mortgages to a considerable amount on this property and demands against the

Estate that have not yet been presented. Therefore, I cannot, at this time, give

you any accurate statement of the condition of the Estate. Thus far, I have not

been able to find but a small amount of demands in favor of Capt. Mason and from

4the present state- of the affairs I cannot advise his friends in Rhode Island to

incur the expense of a journey to Florida although I shall be very happy to see

and confer with any person interested in the Estate. I shall prosecute the

/-/-^,v^... with all consistent expedition and will hereafter communicate to you

all the information you may desire.

Respectfully yours
Obedient Servant
Timothy Wightman

been enabled to investigate the affair; and whether you are still of the

opinion that the estate has been "illegally settled": and could, if examined
