Norfolk, 1 June 1810

Mr. Philip A. Smith

Dear Sir
The Schooner Race Horse Capt. Smith being loaded & in
complete readiness for Tea. We hand you enclosed, Bill Lading &
Invoice of her Cargo. The Same being for accot. of ourselves &
Alexr. Maclure & to your address-
The Vessels Papers are all made out for Sr. deCuba which
destination it had been our intention to have send her direct -
but as a better market may possibly be found in Hayti and being in
the immediate tract we have concluded that it will be best to
call off where the Schooner can lay off & on. while you have
made enquiry that the prices are good that cash can be commanded
for the Cargo it will be advisable not to go farther- and if such
a prospect presents upon which you can with safety rely we then
will it most probable that in that department of the Island the
safest & most desirable Port to sell at will be Port auPrince -
but as already observed-without Cash can be attained in payt. or
that the Price is so very inducing we think it would be better to proceed
down to Sr.Iago a heavy & loosing article in this country You
will hN however be enabled to doubt to learn pretty near the State of
the market at Sr.Iago & with every information before you you will
accordingly decide on what is best to be done having in view
at same time, the ostensable object of the voyage.....
