YOU KNEW A LOT

ABOUT IT ALREADY...

How a handful of men landed
in the Sierra Maestra, withstood
the bombs
of Batista's Air Force,
grew beards
and waited two years, until
it was time
to carry the fight barehanded
into the cities
against an Army
equipped with everything but
Right...
I

And how the Army was licked

and Batista

beaten so badly

he left behind

unhidden and undestroyed

the Secret Police and Army records

showing

who had shot who

in the years of tyranny

when thousands died to maintain

the Dictator in power...

' ~1)

These records made for

Swift Revolutionary Justice...

They did not leave room for doubt...

A series of endorsed checks,

the wages of an informer...

A signed Police report.
"the suspect died while under

questioning"...

in exchange

Swift Justice,

now.ended...

YOU KNEW THESE THINGS ALREADY BUT DID YOU KNOW
HOW IT ALL BEGAN? OR WHERE IT'S GOING TO?

This is a much longer story, much more difficult to tell.
It deals in shades of meaning, not just black and white
"You killed my brother, Bang."
But in decades of confusion which have come from superimposing
a modern government upon an ancient Spanish one,
which ran best when well greased with bribes
and which was based on the King's pleasure -
The land owned by as few nobles as possible
responsible only to him.
These two holdovers from ancient ways wqe the real targets of
Our Revolution. Batista was just the symld at whose pleasure the
government was still greased with bribes to hold together
these enormous states and build new ones for those who had
the inside track,..

And only talked about

Reforma Agraria

in election years...

Too late now for

that sort of reform. It has

come at last, its price written

in blood

and generations of poverty

that suddenly can only be answered

"Now!"

And balanced neatly with other

laws that will not let

the benefits slip away

while strident voices

shout, "Let's wait, go slow,

not now,

as they have always shouted...

And when a step is taken

exchange the cry for

"Communist!"

^sr'^vr^-*l VOW-i-*

Which like

"Wolf!"

tells more about the man who

shouts it

than what he has seen...

And so clouds the issue

that it takes

a patient mind

to hear the satisfaction

of the people

or a tourist's eye

to see that they are happy

and having a good

revolution.

Glad you could come.
