If youre reading this story for the first time, let me give you a brief recap of what you missed in the first article. S.J. is a young homeless man in his early 30s, who was involved in an accident where a lawn mower jumped into gear and ran him over, cutting all of his calf muscle off and most of his left foot. S.J. was just like any of us; he worked hard to get a house, vehicles, and money in the bank, only to lose everything because of the accident. In the last article, I left off where S.J. was being flown by Life Flight to Shands Hospital in Gainesville. He flat lined on the way to the hospital. Somehow the doctors were able to save his life, even after he lost six pints of blood. Normally, if a person loses four pints of blood, they are graveyard dead. It was three days after S.J.s accident when he finally began to wake up. As his eyes opened, he could see that his left leg and foot were wrapped in what looked like Glad Cling Wrap. As S.J. looked closer he could see that his foot, ankle, and leg had metal rods sticking out of them and hooked to a tubed contraption that would keep his leg and foot from moving. Now, if this wasnt enough, he also had a tube coming out where his calf muscle used to be, and it went to his heel. The doctor explained to him that this was to keep the blood circulating. Later that day, S.J. would be prepped for surgery to try and repair the damage to both his foot and calf. The doctors explained to S.J. and his mother that his foot had been de-gloved, which meant that most of the bottom of his foot had been cut off, along with about a third of his heel bone. The doctor continued to tell S.J. that his ankle had been completely cut off and all of his tendons, ligaments, and most of the muscle in the bottom of his foot were gone. During the three days that S.J. was unconscious, the doctors had to make the decision to either remove S.J.s leg from the knee down or to try and reconstruct his foot and calf muscle. After a few specialists were brought in, the decision was made to try and save his leg and foot. Nothing like this had been done before, so they came up with a plan to try and reconstruct the leg and foot. S.J. would go into surgery where the doctors would remove a section of skin and fat from his thigh, and this would be placed on the bottom of his foot and calf. After the first surgery, there were few minor complications, like infection and blood clotting. S.J. stated that after one of the surgeries, he looked down to see Winners of the 2014 Jan Dunn Keller Heels for Healing Calendar entitled, A Day Without V iolence have been announced. HO! HO! HELLO, Mrs. Claus and I have spoken with the nice folks from the Crescent City Celebration Committee and we have wonderful news! We are very excited to accept your invitation! We will be here for your Christmas Festival on Friday, December 6, and Saturday, December 7. Actually, the Elves are nearly packed and ready to go, and all the Reindeer have been ready to visit Crescent City since we were first invited. Rudolph really pushed for this early December rest in the Florida Sunshine. We are also delighted to accept the extra special invitation! Have you heard?? Theres a parade Friday evening on Lake Crescent! For this event, some extra-special Elf-people around your town are decorating their boats, and will parade them in front of all the Crescent Lake Parks and the City Dock for everyone to enjoy! Do you know how long it has been since Ive ridden in a boat!?? I sure hope its a big boat, if you know what I mean. I wonder where well park the sleigh? Mrs. Claus was told that we will be able to see the Stage One dancers perform on the tennis courts at 10 a.m. on Saturday! And, after the parade, I am honored to join the VFW Post 10177 and your ROTC in a Flag Presentation Ceremony in Remembrance of Pearl Harbor Day. We will have fun, fun, fun all day. Please come and enjoy all the festivities that are planned just for you, your friends and family. I am especially looking forward to hearing my dear friends from The Johnson Temple Choir & Company. Theyve been invited to close this community celebration until next year, with their beautiful, deeply felt, moving music. Ive heard them sing before and I believe their performance will open every heart to hear the message of love and peace that is the celebration of Christmas. So, from what I understand, you can have fun all Friday afternoon at your beautifully decorated Eva Lyon Park, then attend the evening boat parade, then return for more all day fun Saturday, December 7. The parade begins at noon, along US 17. There will be food, craft vendors, games, pony rides, art stations and a variety of entertainment both Friday and Saturday in Eva Lyon Park. We thank you so much for asking us to Crescent City. Every Christmas Eve night, when were delivering toys and joy here, we always say, This is such a beautiful little town. Kimberly Guererro Third grade: Ms. Hancocks class Students at Middleton-Burney Elementary School, in Crescent City, were asked the following question by 3rd Grade teacher Tasha Newbold: Eyes Eyes One day, when my daughter, Heather, was four, she dropped a tooth brush down the sink. To her this was a major catastrophe. Someone had pulled out the drain plug, and when she pulled her toothbrush out of the toothbrush holder, someone elses fell into the sink and disappeared into the black netherworlds. She really started to sob. She was sure somebody was really going to be mad at her. I went up to comfort her, and told her it would be all right. But, she said, I cant get it out, and if I do, its going to be yucky and gross. Dont worry about it, I said. It was probably Moms, and we just wont tell her. My wife called from the other room, I heard that, and the couch is lumpy and uncomfortable! I tried to get the toothbrush out with a wire but had no luck. I finally had to resort to taking the sink trap apart. As I pulled it out and handed it to Heather so she could wash it, I recognized it as my own. She gave me a big hug. You are the best dad in the whole world. I smiled at her. Im glad you think so, Sweety. But perhaps it would be best to just throw the toothbrush away. Why? she asked. Because its dirty and unsanitary. She looked at it quizzically. I dont think its any worse than when I accidentally knocked it in the toilet last week. As I was trying to keep my dinner down, Heather told me I was her hero, and that she wanted to grow up to be a daddy just like me. Then she hugged me and skipped off, humming her way to bed. I like being a childs hero, but sometimes it makes me think about my responsibility as such. Every once in a while, I see a reflection of myself in these little people, sometimes good, but sometimes I wonder. After lunch, my two-year-old, Elliana, swung her bear, Chocolate, into bed, One, two, three, she said, and then she did piggies on his toes. She giggled and tucked him into bed. I was feeling pretty good about myself until, as she slipped out of the room, she turned back and said to Chocolate, And you better nap if you plan on watching a video tonight, because if you dont nap, Im sending you to bed early. Well, Chocolate took his nap, and he got to watch the video. We were all watching it together when Heather and Elli, hand in hand, approached me. They gave me a big hug and Heather said, We love, you, Daddy, I told them I loved them too. Heather said they were glad I was their daddy. I told them I was glad too. And you know what, she continued, youre the best daddy in the whole world. I smiled as they hugged me again. Then, still holding hands, they looked at each other, and then Heather looked back at me and asked, Can we have those two pillow you are lying on? I smiled back at them and handed them my pillows. My wife shook her head. Your little girls have you wrapped around their fingers. She says that quite often, and Im not quite sure why. Ill have to ponder it further while I go get myself another pillow.Letter to the Editor Crescent City Christmas Parade

A4 OUR TO WN Years Ago...74 years agoDecember 7, 1988 Hull Acquitted of Federal Tax Fraud The founder of Crescent Citys ill-fated Community Health Services was acquitted last week on 15 counts of federal income tax fraud charges following an Orlando trial. Hull has been accused of claiming a $464,113 deduction on a 1983 tax return on one of his firms, while the government said the actual deduction should have been $107,400. The firm, Liquid Extraction Systems, filed for bankruptcy in April of 1987. CHS was ordered into bankruptcy earlier this year.25 years agoDecember 3, 1937 Transients Aided Local Committee The question has been raised recently of the policy of the Crescent City Community Chest in regard to aid given to transients. One of the reasons for organizing the Community Chest with its welfare committee was to alleviate the situation that existed in which transients coming to town would solicit charity from a number of people and receive considerable sums from donors who did not realize that others had also given aid. Way Back When...The following is an excerpt from an article that appeared in the Putnam County Courier Journal of December 6, 1962. Pomona Church Plans 80th Anniversary Event Celebration of the 80th year of its founding will be observed by the Pilgrim Congregational Church of Pomona Park on Sunday, December 30. The Union Pilgrim Church, as it was rst known, was organized August 16, 1882, and was received into the Association at the rst annual meeting, March 19, 1884. Ralph O. Harpole is the present minister. According to the history of the church, in the early 1880s, a group of Union Army veterans, wishing to get away from the severe New England winters, sent an emissary in search of a new home where they might spend their declining years. They expressed themselves as wanting a place high enough to be healthful, with plenty of good drinking water, fertile soil, a good area for shing, and a warm climate. When the emissary visited the Fruitland Peninsula in Putnam County, he felt that he had found the place. It was to this spot that the old soldiers came, and in naming the place they could think of no better name than Pomona, for the Roman goddess of fruit. And so the new town was named Pomona Park. One of the rst things the new citizens did was found a church which, at rst, had only half dozen or so members who gathered each Sunday at the home of E. B. Olmsteads. This home later became the property of the late George V. Brown. Rev. Moses C. Welch, of Hartford, Connecticut, conducted the rst worship service. In 1882 the church was formally organized and, we are told, it was named Pilgrim Congregational Church because the members were descendants of the Pilgrims. In 1884, the church afliated with the Florida State Congregational Association. that S.J. was taking small bites, almost like a squirrel eating a nut, so I said, Is there something wrong S.J.? He replied, No sir, Im just savoring the taste, because I dont know when I will taste anything this good again! It took S.J. almost 20 minutes to eat what I usually wolf down in 30 seconds, and with every bite, S.J. would close his eyes like it was his last meal. After he finished his breakfast, we sat down and talked. S.J. confirmed all the stuff I read in the reports and what his mother told me about his accident. I asked him how he felt about being homeless. I expected his attitude to completely turn around and to hear the bitter side of him come flying out of his mouth, but to my surprise he said, Im not homeless, I have a place to stay, right here, come let me show you. S.J. started to walk, or should I say hobble, into this house, which is about to collapse, I followed him regardless of the structures condition. As we entered the front part, he got down on his knees and started to crawl through this opening that is only about two feet wide and maybe four feet high. I followed him through what looked like an old hallway, which eventually opened up into a room that was almost collapsed. The room was about six feet by six feet wide, and the ceiling was about five feet off the floor. In this room, S.J. had an old mattress, which was probably 30 years old, and a package of Oreos. He sat on the edge of the mattress, and then opened the package of Oreos, which only had two in it, and said, My mom told me that you were going to be coming back so I saved these for you! Are you kidding me? Here is a guy who has nothing to eat, but a couple of cookies, and hes offering the last two of them to me. Never in my life has my heart been touched so much. The wind was starting to kick up and the house sounded like it was going to cave in any second, so I told S.J., Lets get out of here before this place crushes us to death, to which he agreed. As we started crawling out of the house, the winds started blowing really hard, and all of the sudden boards started falling, I knew at any second this house was going to fall. We were about 20 feet from getting out of the house when Well thats all the space I have for this week. Next week I will tell you what happened. If you want to check out more pictures, I will be posting some on the Putnam County Courier Journal Facebook page with some video footage this week. I didnt know if I would wake up the next time and find out that they had crawled up my leg and might be on my private parts! Then he laughed. It was five surger ies later and almost a month in the I.C.U. when S.J. was sent to a nursing/rehabilitation home in Gainesville, where he would try to recover. Now during this time, S.J. said the doctors words kept playing over and over in his mind that he would never walk again. S.J. was bound and determined to prove the doctors wrong, and with the help of one special nurse, he set out to do just that. It would be several months later when S.J. was allowed to leave and return home. Once home, he would need help. So three times a day, S.J.s mother would come over to his house and change his bandages. This proved to be too much for her. Some years back, his mother was in a major car accident where she almost died. She was hit head on by a truck in her VW bug, which left her wind pipe crushed, her leg broken and way too many injuries to list in this article. In fact, I could do a whole series just on her recovery, but this is about S.J., so let me get back to that. The reason that S.J. left the nursing/rehab center was because the money ran out. However, this one special nurse from the rehab center made S.J. an offer to come live with her while he recovered. He took her up on the offer and moved into her home for a couple of months. Because of this ladys compassion, and S.J.s will to prove the doctors wrong, he started walking again. Unfortunately, this is no Cinderella story with a happy ending. Let me jump to the part where I met S.J. for the first time. After meeting with his mother, she took me down some country roads; out past Palatka where we would park, then track through the woods to where S.J. currently lives. In the first article, I mentioned S.J. and how he had been in trouble with the law, so I was expecting to see this big guy who would look like something from a prison movie. You know the type, six foot three inches tall, arms covered in tattoos, with his head shaved, screaming that hes gonna stab me with a shank. But that wasnt the case. As we walked down a narrow path of poison ivy, briars, and vines loaded with stickers, we came to a small clearing. As I looked ahead and to the right I could see part of an old collapsed house, and a just beyond that the figure of someone bending over through the brush. It was S.J. With my heart pounding a mile a minute, and my hand on my Taser, which was in my jacket, we walked through the brush. Instead of seeing this 6 tattooed man with a shank in his hand, I saw a 5, 115-pound man with a big smile on his face. My first thought was, Okay where is S.J., and who is this little guy? It was at this point that his mother opened up her arms and as she hugged him tight she said, This is my baby boy, S.J. Okay, now Im looking around for Mike and the crew from the Putnam County Cou rier Journal to jump out of the brush and tell me that Ive been pranked! It wasnt until I sat down on a log and started talking to S.J. that I realized this was no prank. Before I move on let me describe S.J to you. Like I said, he is 5, and if you soaked him down with water, then put a brick in each pocket he might weigh in at 115 pounds. He is the actual size of a horse jockey for the Kentucky Derby, which is what he has always wanted to be, but thats for another story. S.J. wore an old black western leather hat; he hasnt shaved in probably a year, and his t-shirt is stained and his jeans are two sizes too big for him. As I looked down, I could see that his old work boots were falling apart, and as he sat there talking to me, I noticed that when he shifted his foot from side to side his boot would spit apart, and I could see his foot. Now while Im sitting there talking to S.J., I see he has open wounds on his face, arms, and neck, and the mosquitoes were having a feeding frenzy in these open wounds. Yet, it didnt seem to bother him at all. Well it was getting dark, so I decided to leave and return the next day. Day two, I arrived where S.J. is staying, I parked my SUV, then loaded up for the hike back through the jungle to him. Once I ar rived back at this par tially collapsed house, I didnt see S.J., until I noticed a boot and leg sticking out from under a section of roof from the old porch, which was only three feet off the ground. I got down on my knees and looked under. Sure enough, it was S.J. sleeping. As I looked closer I could see a couple of palmetto bugs eating at the open wounds on his face. My immediate reaction was to stand up and back away, which I did. I then decided to walk back a ways and call out his name. S.J., are you here? I yelled. Yeah, said a faint voice coming from under the rubble. S.J. crawled out and with a big smile on his face said, Good morning Mr. Roberts. I had stopped by Burger King on the way to meet with him, and handed him the bag, which contained a sausage, egg biscuit, and hash browns. I then said, I thought you might want some breakfast, to which he replied, Oh yes sir, I sure do. He opened the bag, then stuck his nose in the opening, breathed in real deep, then said, Thank you sir, it sure does smell good! I told S.J to go ahead and eat while I took some pictures of where he lived, and that we would talk after he was done. As I walked around, taking pictures, I noticed Making the Most from page A1

Second closest with 9 inches was Don Frazee.Last week, the Putnam Family Fitness Center, which started the South Putnam County Soccer League, had its playoff games. At the end of the day all the players received a ribbon for this season and first, second, and third place trophies were awarded to the teams that won the final games. In last weeks issue, I wrote about these kids and how Bonnie and Ron started this league by word of mouth, which, at the end of two weeks, had grown into over 180 young boys and girls. I will be posting more pictures of the awards and the kids from the final games on the Putnam County Courier Journal Facebook page soon. Let me tell you, if you havent been out to see these kids play, you have really missed soccer at its best, especially the 4 to 6 year old group. I am amazed at how many parents have gotten involved with this program. This years season is almost over, but you can still catch the playoffs this coming Saturday, December 7, at Morgan park located at the corner of Highway 19 and Highway 17 in Palatka. South Putnam will be taking on Palatka for the playoffs. I will be there covering the game, so I hope you can come out and cheer these kids on. Now if you have some young people who would like to play T-Ball, Baseball or Softball, ages 4-13, you still have time to register but you have to do it before Friday, December 20. You can get more information by calling 386-6498784 or by stopping by the Putnam Family Fitness Center. The Center is also taking registrations for next years soccer teams until the end of January. I hope to be able to cover all the games this coming season and I hope you guys will help support these kids. I want to say thank you to all the people involved in making this league possible for these young kids. Bonnie will be sending me the entire schedule for this coming sea son, which I will post on the Putnam County Courier Journal Facebook page. If you would like to sponsor a child, or a whole team, then please give Bonnie or Ron a call at the Putnam Family Fitness Center. They really need our support to keep these programs going, and without these programs to shape our kids lives, they are more likely to get in trouble in the future. Please show them your support by showing up at the games and giving whatever you can. Well thats about it, you guys have a great week and now that school is back in, Im sure to be busy, see you next week. December 4, 2013 COURIER JOURNAL Section B One argument that you wont nd going on anywhere is which college football team is the best in the country. All the gas went out of support for Alabama when Auburn won the Iron Bowl last Saturday night, leaving Florida State as numero uno. That lofty position was totally justied a few weeks ago, in my opinion, after watching the Se mioles scrap Clemson, and followed with one lopsided victory after another. Not one team gave the Noles any competition. The ACC has shown strength against outside conferences this year with Miami, Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh and Boston College beating out some outside teams. But it makes not difference if the overall strength of the ACC was improved. FSU simply dominated every one of the conference foes they faced. It was difcult to assess the relative strength of this team within the conference be cause of the disparity between the FSU program and those of the other conference members. Notre Dame, as I understand, will be obligated to play ve ACC opponents yearly, not long after the Fighting Irish ofcially joined the conference. Syracuse and Pittsburgh are already full mem bers, and Louisville will come in soon. The ACC has taken steps to add schools with quality athletic programs. However, 2013 will be remembered as the year of the Noles, just as it will be remembered as the pitts for rival Florida of the SEC. They were a team that now has to hang on to that old phrase, Wait til next year. Getting back to the ACC, it is evident that the conference championship game in Charlotte this coming Saturday will be between Coastal Divi sion winner Duke and FSU. What would normally be a tough game between the two best teams in conference is, in all likelihood, going to be fairly non-competitive. Why is that? Duke, a bottom of the league team for the last 25 years is in fact a team, which never won 10 games in a season in its history, has the doubtful honor or privilege of take on the Seminoles in a game destined, according to the talking sports heads as a stroll in the park, for FSU. Surprisingly enough, these same people have been, what I would say, fairly easy on the Blue Devils. The reason being the history of losing years they have experienced over the last twenty-some odd years, and the great job David Cutliff has done as Head Coach over the last three years. It is true about the 10 game achievement, but when I was in Durham, the maximum number of games played was nine. So not winning 10 games back then was impossible. Nevertheless, Duke went to the 1955 Orange Bowl as ACC champs, winning, I think, either eight or nine games out of 10, and beat Nebraska with of a score of around 55-20. That score was not unexpected entirely, because Nebraska lost to Hawaii 60-10 in their last game of the year. Those bowl games have been a rarity for Durhambased Duke over the last years, as I have stated before. Steve Spurrier, back in the early 90s, and, most recently, Cutliff, have been the only coaches to take the team to a bowl. Whatever the nal outcome of Saturdays games, Im positive Jimbo Fisher will run across the eld and shake hands with the winner. Now, I am not going to get into the BCS thing, but it appears to me that FSU will be the National Champs after sticking it to Urban Meyer and the Ohio State Buckeyes. Its hard to gure out just how Meyer will counter that machine from Talla hassee. For sure they wont be able to stop Jameis, because he can beat you with his arm or his legs. The balance of the Nole offense is characterized by a strong running game, so it is a very balanced offense. Then we could talk about that defensive set up, one of the stingiest in the country. This is an untested team, and I have to go back to the dismantling of Clemson to prove my point. Although Ill be pulling for the Blue Devils this Saturday, I have no delusions about the outcome. Maybe not a test, but at least a contest.
