This past Saturday, members of Interlachen High Schools National Honors Society Completed a memorial and tribute in honor of students that have served and lost their lives in the service to our country. Lowes of Palatka donated manhours, materials and the hand carved centerpiece, making the memorial possible. NHS members, along with Lowes volunteers, worked two weekends to complete the project. We are trying to build a little Ram Pride, stated Lizabeth Middleton, teacher at IHS and head of the Honors Society, And I also wanted to honor my late student Jesse Stites, who was killed in action. Stites was a 2006 graduate of IHS, who joined the Marine Corps in 2008 and was on his second tour when the CH-53 helicopter that he served on, as crew chief, was shot down over the Helmand Province in Afghanistan, in January 2012. During a brief service for the memorial, IHS principal Thom as Bolling made the following statement, Sometimes we wonder about the direction of our country. I am very proud of these students and its times like this that remind us we can rest assured our country is in good hands. The memorial tribute is located on the southwest grounds of the IHS campus for use by the students. There are newly refurbished tables, arbor covered benches, step stones and two-waterfalls set around the shrine, which reads, KIA WIA, All Gave Some, Some Gave All. Area civic leaders from around Putnam County turned out in costume to wait tables and collect tips, which were donated to the event. Members of the Interlachen cheerleading squad helped raise funds for the event by selling Mardi Gras beads to the guests, while members of the Palatka High School Key Club helped out by busing tables. After the tips and votes were tallied, the award for Most Tips went to Robin Robinson of Hope FM, while Best Costume went to Ken Larsen, Mayor of Interlachen. Ramicah Watkins Executive Director, Keep Putnam BeautifulLetters to the Editor ARTober Fest Thank You Now Accepts Aunt Hazel was in Atlanta, Georgia, a week before Halloween. She decided to go shopping at the local dollar store, and all of the employees were wearing costumes. At least, to Aunt Hazel they were. In our modern society they could just have been some teenagers wearing their regular assortment of beads, chains, and license plates for earrings, but she was sure they were costumes. Thus it was that when she went from there to the drug store to pick up her one week supply of pills, the seven of which required a mortgage on the farm to pay for, she had Halloween on her mind. In addition, the price that she was having to pay for the medicine was a frustration burning deep within her. As she stepped into the drug store, no one was in sight. She marched right to the counter and pounded on the little bell. Hey! Can I get some help here? From behind her she heard a hoarse whisper. Lady, were being robbed. Get on the floor. She turned to see a man, dressed in a white lab coat, acting like a doormat. Aunt Hazel figured this was all part of an elaborate Halloween joke. She was not in any mood to be teased. Of course we are being robbed, she replied, this is a pharmacy. Everyone is being robbed. That is what pharmaceutical companies do. No, lady, he countered. We are really getting robbed. Aunt Hazel looked at him with his white lab coat and pursed her lips. If you are going to pretend you are getting robbed, dont you think you should be dressed like a customer and not a pharmacist? Before he had a chance to reply, a teenager wielding a gun appeared. Lady, get on the floor! he demanded. Aunt Hazel thought this Halloween joke was being carried just a little too far. Dont you be impertinent, young man. Im here to get my medicine, and I dont want any of your funny business. If you work here, I want you to get it for me. The young man was flustered and waved the gun at her. But, lady we are... This really annoyed Aunt Hazel, who didnt like guns in the least. Didnt your mother ever tell you that you shouldnt point guns at people, even toy guns? Well, yes, but.. Then dont you think you should do what you are told? Yes, Maam, he replied. Then quit waving that toy around and be a good boy and get my medicine for me. He slipped behind the counter and set the gun down and started rummaging through the previously prepared prescriptions. What did you say your last name was? he asked. Thompson. He was still rummaging through the prescriptions when a much older man appeared from the back room. He looked at the teenager with great disdain. What do you think you are doing? Um, the teenager stuttered, pointing at Aunt Hazel. I was getting this ladys prescription. The older man just snorted. Lets get out of here. With that the two men left. What about my prescription? Aunt Hazel called after them. The people were just getting off of the floor when the young man reappeared. They quickly laid back down. Forgot this, he said, retrieving the gun from the counter. Aunt Hazel just shook her head. People around here take this Halloween stuff way too far. A4 OUR TO WN Years Ago...74 years agoNovember 2, 1988 Game Officers Spot Illegal Canal from Air Work on a 400-foot-long, 25-foot-wide canal west of Pierson was stopped last week by a state Game and Fish Commission officer after the apparently illegal project was spotted from the air. The canal was intended to join an unrecorded subdivision called Lake George Pines with Lake George itself. Lt. Gray Leonhard, area supervisor for the GFWFC said he expected arrests in the case, where the landowner and contractors were working without environmental permits. 25 years agoOctober 29, 1937 Crescent City Rapidly Reaching Goal The Crescent City Chamber of Commerce is rapidly approaching its goal, set during the summer months of this year. The organization decided to make major improvements on the city park several months back, and since have been working steadily toward their goal of improving the community in this manner. October 31, 1963 Fire Destroys Smith Restaurant Fire Monday night destroyed the William Smith restaurant on Highway 17 south of Crescent City. The flames had gained such headway before being discovered that efforts of the fire department were in vain. Cause of the fire was not determined. Lack of sufficient water hampered the firemen, but they were able to keep the flames from spreading to nearby buildings. 50 years ago 10 years agoOctober 29, 2003 Pristine Parks Local folks have begun to enjoy the natural beauty of the new Dunns Creek State Park. Access to the park is available from U.S. Highway 17, just north of Pomona Park. The park provides several miles of hiking trails and has begun holding equestrian rides and other activities. The park is still under development and it has not been decided what facilities will be offered. Compiled from the Crescent City News, Crescent City Journal, Crescent City Courier Journal, Putnam County Courier Journal and other local news sources. 5 years agoOctober 29, 2008 Work to Begin on 309 Work on CR 309 is set to begin. Plans are to start in Georgetown and work north. Three weeks ago, equipment was moved into the area and with crews set to begin, the road was determined to be in worse shape than anticipated. The crews took core samples to see whats under that pavement. They want to find out how far down to go and what type of mixture theyll need for a good structural base and pavement. Way Back When... Summit St. Crescent City, Florida 386-698-2400Call or visit us From the October 13, 1960 issue of the Crescent City Journal, comes the following: CITY TO INVESTIGATE FIRE, ROADS, ZONING Mayor picks committee heads The City Commission of Crescent City formed three committees last night to investigate the needs of the Fire Department, street paving and City planning. Mayor Murry Collier appointed City Commissioner John R. Deacon to head a committee to investigate the needs of the Fire Department as far as re ghting equipment and insurance are concerned. City Commissioner Robert Boldrick was drafted by the Mayor for leading a committee to see about street paving and scraping. The Mayor also appointed W. C. Keebler to form a committee to look into a plan for the formation of a City planning code. Keebler said he felt that a zoning code should be enforced in order that future merchants would be unable to build unattractive buildings. The town could be the prettiest in the State, Keebler said. Deacon said that a zoning board would be helpful to study any exceptions, which might be requested. Mayor Collier said that a zoning ordinance had been drawn up in the past but that it had not been adhered to. He suggested that Keebler study the old ordinance. City Commissioner Phil Sargent suggested a cleanup, pickup day. He said he was disgusted with the way things look and there is a need for more civic pride. In other action, a bid for a truck for the water works was accepted from the Pilcher Chevrolet Company, and members of the Commission related that work has begun on the $100,000 water works project. As the grandson of a Blackfoot Indian, I remember my grandfather taking me camping when I was a kid. It was important to him that the stories he held in his heart be passed down to the next generation around a campfire. Every year during the summer months, he would take some of the boys and go into the Smoky Mountains for a week to teach us how to hunt, trap, fish and basically live off the land. One night, as we sat around the campfire, I remem ber my grandfather telling me a story of the pniese (pa-Nees), which I would like to share with you now. Once a year, the heads of the Indian tribes would select a small group of young braves who were to be pniese. These young men had to possess special qualities or they were not chosen. The pniese had to have special abilities and stamina and as legend has it, once you were a pniese you could not be killed in battle. Yes, you could be hurt, but not killed. Their training was tough and rigorous; they had to learn the art of ignoring pain, by running through briar patches with nothing on, not even a loincloth! OUCH! The pniese learned the art of discipline by fast ing, sometimes for two weeks in the snow. At the end of their training the toughest and wisest were made bodyguards for the tribe. Friday night was one of the best high school football games that I have covered so far. The Raiders were on fire. Bennie Norris, #5, seemed to be unstoppable as he ran 55 yards to the end zone, bouncing off the Agape players like he had been dipped in oil. He would walk another one in for another six points after Akia Berrien, #7, would take the ball to the goal line. Bennie had three TDs for the night. Timmy Rodgers blocked a ball that was recovered by Dillion Dunnigan, and would be taken into the end zone by Dadrian Ellis, #8. Not to be left out was Derick Rassher, #10, and Berrien who would also score touch downs. Abner Brito was kicking with a hurt foot and, with the exception of one kick, he was on target all night. This was Britos first missed ball through the up rights all season. I see this young warrior receiving a scholarship by the time he is a senior. When the dust from the game had finally cleared, the scoreboard would show Raiders 41 to Agape 12. Agape had a well-mannered team and were probably the most disciplined team that we have played all year, my hat goes off to the coaching staff and players of that team. This past Friday night I had a lady walk up to me and say, Oh, you cover the out of town games, too? You must make a lot of money! I started to laugh and said, No I dont, in fact I go in the hole about $100 in gas a week covering the Raiders games and trying to raise money for these young men. She couldnt seem to understand why I was there, so let me give you an example of why I do this. At halftime, just before the start of the second half, I was on the side lines and Jeremy Lopez, #74, walked up to me as I was deleting some pictures off my camera. Lopez said, as he stuck out his hand to shake mine, Coach, I like reading your articles and so does my mom. I said, So what do you like about them? He replied, I like them because you never bash us if we lose a game, but make us feel like we can win the next one, so it makes me want to work harder the next week. As the buzzer sounded, signaling the start of the second half, Lopez slid his helmet over his head and said, Maybe one day you will write about the front line, and off he went. For the next two quarters, I watched both the offensive and defensive lines protect the quarterback and running backs, which made me look at them like they are the true pniese of this Raiders team. These young warriors are on the front line of the battle field. As they approach the line, they are not intimated; they get down on all fours and dig their feet into the turf staring their opponents dead in their eyes, knowing that at the end of One Omaha, two Omaha, three Omaha, they will thrust their body forward slamming another guy head on like a freight train, and most of the time pushing a man bigger than they are to the ground. These young men see more action and train harder than most of the other positions on the team. They are the backbone of the football team. You might not know their names or hear them over the PA system, but watch and listen closely during the next game and you will hear and see their power. This Friday night the Raiders take on Taylor High School at the T. Dewitt field in Pierson. This is only a stones throw away, just down Highway 17 in Pierson. It is also Taylors Homecoming game and a district game. If the Raiders win this one, we are in the playoff for state and that game will be held at the Crescent City field, so please show up and support our Raiders. The game starts at 7 p.m. sharp.
