In my travels around Putnam County, it seems one thing has been a major topic of conversation lately. Lovebugs: the bane of Florida motor ists. Once on the subject most people will proceed to tell you how the University of Florida biologically engineered and released them as part of an experiment to control mosquitoes or how they escaped from a U.F. lab full of exotic insect spe cies. My personal favorite is that they have acid in them that eats paint off cars and because of this have no natural predators. Having an almost 17 year background in the pest control industry and being a Gator fan, I feel compelled to set the record straight. The lovebug, Plecia nearctica is not a bug; it is a bibionid fly species closely related to gnats and mosquitoes that oc curs twice a year, around May and September. It is also referred to as the May fly, double-head ed bug, honeymoon fly, united bug and other ex pletives that I will not repeat. Lovebugs are native to Central America and believed to have mi grated to Texas then the Gulf States before being first reported in Escambia County, Florida in 1949. Currently love bugs are established in the southeastern states of Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Texas. So, no experiments gone bad or escaped bugs, just blame it on good old Mother Nature. Another myth is that lovebugs are somehow attracted to automobiles. This one isnt too far off. They are not attracted to automobiles, but the emissions and heat auto mobiles generate. Adult lovebugs feed on plant nectar and lay their eggs, all 150 to 600 of them, in decaying organic matter, which their larva then feed on. Anethole, an essential oil found in nectar producing plants, and UV irradiated alde hydes are both major components in exhaust fumes, which the lovebugs may confuse with decaying organic matter and nectar sources. Not to mention grass cut tings from mowing the sides of the roads. These factors actually attract the lovebugs during their nuptial flight, and the rest is guts on the windshield. As my fiance likes to say when an insect hits the windshield He wont have the guts to do that again. If you think about it, as much of a pain as it is to clean the carnage from the front of your car, it does help keep the lovebug population in check. As for lovebugs being filled with acid that eats your paint and keeps them off the dinner plate for predators, studies have shown that macerated lovebugs have a neutral pH. Paint damage occurs only after the remains have dried and baked in the sun for extended periods of time. So dont be lazy and then blame the lovebugs, wash your car. While lovebugs do not have as many natural predators as most insects spiders, dragonflies and birds do eat them. Lovebugs are actually considered economically important and benefi cial. Their major contribution to the economy is through the sale of car care products and car wash/detail businesses. While this may not be the kind of contribution most of us like, its bet ter than nothing. Just because lovebug larva helps break down organ ic matter returning nutrients to the soil, thus helping the environment, does not mean they will become more popular anytime soon. This article may not change your opinion about lovebugs, it hasnt changed mine, I still hate them, but at least, hope fully, it will dispel some of the myths. My per sonal opinion, for what its worth, is that F.S.U. started the myths in the first place.Photo by Adam Millard On September 23, St. Johns Ship Building of Palatka, launched its Hull No. 32, named the Atlantic Spirit. The company has been go ing through a worldwide change, and that change has even reached to our local store. In the past few months, customers may have noticed a new logo and new special ty items being added to the menu at many of the Wendys locations. Now, the crews who are serving up square hamburgers and choc olate Frostys are looking sharper than ever thanks to an updated uniform. Instead of an array of bright primary colored shirts, they are now dressed to impress in dark red and black. This new look matches the modern feel Wendys has been implementing throughout their fran chise. Stop by your local Crescent City Wendys to day for a delicious lunch and to check out the new wardrobe, both of which will have you saying, Now thats better. For me, its been a hobby and I deeply appreciate the fact that the Courier Journal has allowed me to be a part of this paper. I sin cerely hope that I have managed to make a few folks smile and/or think. To those I have offended, I offer my regrets. Recently, a hater has responded to my column. While I realized that her main purpose for writing was to impress us all with what she regards as her superior vocabulary and writing ability, I am not impressed. Frankly, life is far too short for one to waste it dealing with haters. By-the-way, haters are people who are negative and refuse to enjoy life or allow others to. Not only can they not smile or feel joy, they cannot abide those who do. As obtuse as it may sound, I have decided to take a break from writing. Gee, if I dont stop now, someone might write in and call me stupid. Its been a blast, be happy. Bye for now.A Gentleman Knows When To GoLloyd Harris Local crime hot spots will be listed here weekly. We publicly say, Thank You, Thank You, to all our PFFC members and to all our community sup porters and neighbors who volunteered in various ways to help us throughout the day from early morning set-up, cooking, serving, and clean-up to take-down much late that afternoon; to Shirley and Jim for organizing the affair and allowing us to use their lawn, electricity, and kitchen; to Mayor John Bergquist and his wife, Pat, of Pomona Park for spending the whole day from the very beginning to the very end supervising and working; and to all the generous and hungry citizens of our area who purchased fish dinners. Many thanks also to all those stalwart volunteers who organized and ran the Yard Sales held in connection with the dinner. It is so encouraging to have everyone come together as we begin operations in our new locations at 213 Perry Street, Pomona Park, and we invite you all to stop by and see what we have accomplished to date as we continue to remodel and improve. Our next PFFC project to be put on your calendar is a wonderful Health Expo to be held Saturday, September 28, under the direction of Dr. Bonnie Harrison. There will be more information available as the date approaches. Again, thank you to all our wonderful members and the special people of our community for all your support, encouragement, and help. They want to thank each and every one who has helped so far. However, funds are still tight and she is still out of work until she is fully recovered. We here at the PCCJ are asking the community to come together and help out those who need it the most. The Saucermans have an account set up at the First Coast Credit Union in Crescent City and account number is 109089.Saucermans Still in Need of Your Help I was a sophomore in high school, and it was the first day of the school year. There was a new boy, Skip, who was in my athletic training class. He was big, muscular, and showed a lot of athletic ability. But I had never seen anyone that seemed so timid. In fact, it was more than just timidity; he was just plain strange. We started out the class by lifting weights. Skip watched the weight room door nervously. If it ever started to open, he would dash around behind the weight ma chine and peer cautiously out from behind it. Once the person who had opened the door had entered the room, he would slowly come out and go back to lifting weights. The first time seemed like a coincidence, but after this had happened a few times, everyone realized it wasnt. Finally, after a half dozen episodes of this, curiosity got the better of Lenny, and he walked over to Skip. Hey, you new here or what? Lenny asked. Skip nodded. Just moved here yesterday from the East coast. The rest of us gathered around. Are you feeling alright? Lenny asked. Skip looked at us and shrugged. Sure. Why wouldnt I be? Just then Coach stepped into the room, and Skip darted around behind the weight machine. Hey, is this a speech class? Coach bellowed. I thought I sent you in here to lift weights. Well, if you arent going to do that, you can all head out to the track and run a mile. Everyone groaned. And if I catch anybody walking, Coach continued, it will be two miles tomorrow. Coach turned and headed back to his office, and Skip came out from behind the weight machine. You dont have to be scared of Coach, Lenny said to him. Hes got a big bark, but hes okay. What makes you think Im scared of him? Skip asked. We all just looked at each other, and Lenny shrugged. We made our way through the gym heading on our way out to the track. As we reached the outside door, Skip paused. He warily looked out as the rest of us continued on to the track. Suddenly, Skip took off out the door, running full speed past us. When he reached the track, he threw himself under the bleachers. Lenny leaned over to me and whispered. I dont know about you, but this guy is freaking me out. When the rest of us reached the track, we started jogging. As we passed the bleachers where Skip was, he nervously joined us, trying to keep right in the middle of the main group. As we finished our mile, he quickly hid under the bleachers again. Lenny couldnt stand it anymore. What are you doing? he yelled at Skip. Hiding from the Indians, Skip said. What Indians? Lenny asked. You know, the ones that will attack and... Suddenly Skip paused. He slowly came out from his hiding place and looked at us. Arent you guys scared? Scared of what? Lenny asked. Well, Ive seen Western movies where Indians came and attacked and... He stopped again. Do Indians not do that any more? I dont know, Lenny said. Lets ask David. Hes an Indian. Lenny then turned to David Bearclaw. David, do you plan to attack us? David laughed. Only if you steal my brownie from my lunch tray again like you did today. Skip smiled an embarrassed smile. I guess the real danger is only in being afraid of what we dont understand.

In The River Flows North, by Brian Mi chaels, the following is related about what has become a Crescent City landmark. On May 18, 1969, the county dedicated its new Lakeshore Nursing Home on the former site of the Na tive Plant Park in Cres cent City. More than a thousand attended the ceremonies and open house, which opened with a musical pro gram by the Crescent City High School Band. The building was constructed by Kennedy Construction Company of New Smyrna Beach, Inc., on plans prepared by Frank George, AIA, of Palatka. Funds were provided jointly by the federal government, through the Hill-Har ris program administered by the Division of Hospitals and Medical Facilities of the Board of Commissioners of State Institutions, and by Putnam County Commissioners from part of the proceeds of the sale of bonds pledging Putnam Countys share of the State Racing Revenue. The land for the nursing home was donated by the City of Crescent City and dedicated primarily to the service of Putnam County citizens in memory of George Kirk White, a beloved County Commissioner, whose home was Crescent City. A4 OUR TO WN Years Ago...75 years agoSeptember 28, 1988 Miller Honors 63 Workers For Service Miller Enterprises, Inc. honored 63 employees for a combined total of 513 years of service. Fifteen of those receiving service plaques during the banquet were from south Putnam County where the company is headquartered. 25 years agoSeptember 30, 1938 Cities Protesting Gas Prices By Wholesale The Palatka City Commission has gone on record opposing the wholesale prices charged for gasoline in Palatka and Putnam County, and Mayor John W. Campbell was appointed to carry the matter before the FTC to learn why. It was pointed out that Palatka and Putnam County is pay ing about two and a half cents per gallon more than Jacksonville. Crescent City gasoline is sold at a higher price than Volusia County from the same tank and the people will be interested in the outcome. September 26, 1963 Heavy Rains Hit Area Over Weekend Rain finally hit this area over the week end dumping 7.78 inches of water here between 8 p.m. Sunday and 5 p.m. Monday. With the rain and winds coming in from the northeast, the water level in Lake Crescent rose several feet. Boats tied up along the lake were soon filled with water, with a number of them sinking. It is understood that the win overturned some of the larger boats also.50 years ago 10 years agoOctober 1, 2003 Graffiti Gone Too Far Most south Putnam residents have probably noticed the excessive amount of graffiti on signs, walls, rail road station boxes and other places in our area. The graffiti is all over south Putnam, especially in areas south of Crescent City. Another location attacked by graffiti was the Pomona Park area. Pomona Park received a considerably larger amount of damage than that south of Crescent City. Investigators say the graffiti is being produced primarily by local gang members. The Sherriffs Office is investigating the groups involved in the production of the graffiti and the property damage. After reading a recent letter to the editor in the Putnam County Courier Jour nal regarding Crescent Citys water bills, we though it appropriate to offer some response. We do not expect an explanation of the bill will make you happy about paying it, but we do hope that it will help you better understand the bill. The $82.81 referred to as the minimum bill for water in the letter is much more than a water bill; that $82.81 pays for water ser vice, sewer service and garbage pickup, plus applicable taxes and surcharges. The minimum monthly water rate is actually $19.46 for the rst 3,000 gallons; the sewer rate is a at $41.09 regard less of how much you ush down the drain; and the garbage service is $14.25. Taxes and surcharges cover the balance of the $82.81 minimum utility bill. We do not profess to be the cheapest utility in the region, but when you consider that this $82.81 is buying you up to 3,000 gallons of water, unlimited use of the sewer system for your bathroom, kitchen and laundry (regardless of how much water you use), as well as twice-a-week gar bage pickup and once a week yard trash pickup for the month, the $82.81 is going a lot farther than just paying for water service. Regarding the concern expressed for a rate that promotes water conservation, Crescent City actually uses a tiered block rate and the water rates do go up with increased us age. The intent of this rate structure is to en courage conservation. Under this rate struc ture the minimum wa ter bill of $19.46 per month buys the rst 3,000 gallons of usage. Any usage between 3,001 gallons and 5,000 gallons is billed at an additional $2.16 per 1,000 gallons; etc. If you do irrigate even twice a week, you can exceed 3,000 gallons of water in a month before you even consider use of the water for bathing, washing clothes and doing dishes. Chances are, if your kids are in a mess its because youre in one too. But theres hope. Your children can get organized when you make it fun. What will make the difference? Magic! But in order to put magic into the mix, youll need to call upon your childrens imagination. Think of the power you have around Christmastime with Santa and his elves lurking around and checkin his list. Kids imaginations run as smoothly as Mi chelle Kwan behind a Zamboni. Theyre natural imaginers! And thats where the House Fairy comes in! Whos the House Fairy? Well heres the scoop. When my sis ter and I decided to get organized, it was June 16, 1977 and we agreed to get organized first and then help our six kids who, at the time, ranged in age from two to twelve. We knew sooner or later we needed to deal with their disorder, but we werent sure how we were going to do that. Since Peggy and I got organized in the summer, it was the perfect time to let the kids play and enjoy their summer vacation, knowing that when school started, three of the six would be in school and back into a routine, while the remaining three (two BOPs Born Organized People) would be eas ier to handle. Joanna, my BOP daughter was washing her toys when she was two. When she was eight, someone asked her if shed like a doll house for Christmas and she replied, Oh, I dont think so, itd be just one more thing to keep clean. One day, well into autumn, my daughter Peggy Ann came home from second grade announcing that at school the Desk Fairy came to call and she got a surprise. A surprise? For what? A surprise for keeping my desk neat. Really? And yours was neat? (Peggy was one of my messiest off spring.) Yes, because Teach er says we never know when the Desk Fairy will come, so we have to keep our desks neat ALL THE TIME! She says the Desk Fairy checks our desks when were out playing at recess and if theyre neat we get a surprise. This fantastic idea got my crazy brain to cooking and within a week, I was decked out in a crazy wig, a dress with a twirly skirt in four layers of irides cent pink, green, pur ple, and orange, spiked heels, and a wand made from the vacuum cleaner hose with an aluminum foil covered tennis ball tucked in the end. Armed with three gifts for surprises, I headed over to my sisters house to make the first House Fairy inspection call. I rang the doorbell and Jeff, one of my nephews, answered the door. Hi, Im the House Fairy and Im here to check your room. He recognized me and seemed confused by my attire and spiel. My sister stood right behind him with a mixture of delight and confusion. Im the House Fairy and I have three sur prises for the children if their rooms are neat and clean, I repeat ed. By then, my other niece and nephew, Chris and Ally, were in the doorway making a quartet of gawkers. On that first visit, Chris (my sisters BOP) got his surprise, but Ally and Jeff did not. After that fateful day, my sister and I took turns showing up at each others houses in outrageous costumes and our children began cleaning up their acts. The House Fairy works! News Flash! The House Fairy has come alive thanks to the Internet! When your kids watch the House Fairy, I promise theyll WANT to start cleaning up. See for yourself. www. housefairy.org. Putnam County Fire/ EMS Captain Greg Brown was recently diagnosed with cancer that had pro gressed to be inoperable. He has completed the six weeks of treatments. During this time he received approximately 192 hours of chemo-therapy and had radiation treatment almost every day but is still being evaluated for further needs. A fund raiser event is planned for Captain Brown to help raise funds for the expen sive treatments. Captain Greg Brown has been employed with Putnam County Fire / EMS since 2001. Greg has spent many of his adult years serving the public. He served in the United States Military for 12 years six years in the Army and six in the Navy. During this time frame he was deployed to serve overseas in Iraq and Ku wait in 2003 and 2004. The fundraiser event is called Pirates and Para medics and was an event that was started about a year ago for another co-worker who had cancer as well. The event is planned for October 26 from 9 a.m. 11 p.m. at the Putnam Coun ty Shrine Club in East Palatka. A Facebook page has been set up and can be found via a FB search for Pirates and Para medics. The site gives information on activities planned for the event and what else can be done. Online donations and encouraging comments can be sent to Greg at http://www.donationto. com/captain-brown A donation account was also established at Pros perity Bank in Palatka. To donate to the account you simply visit the bank and let the teller know youd like to donate to the Professional Firefighters of Putnam Countys account for Greg Brown. They will assist you with making sure your funds go to Captain Brown. Despite being in pain, Greg wants to remind us what we can do to avoid a similar scenar io. You must be proactive, he said in an inter view. He added, Cancer is more difficult to treat when it progresses too long. When you first start noticing a pain or prob lem that persists or gets worse instead of better, seek medical attention to find out what your body is telling you. Or if you have a family history of cancers, get checked and screened regularly to catch it as fast as possible. Denying the problem exists will not make it go away. According to http:// www.cancer.org/healthy/ index More than half of all cancer deaths could be prevented by mak ing healthy choices like not smoking, staying at a healthy weight, eating right, keeping active, and getting recommended screening tests. Visit www.cancer.org for more info on cancer and some of the prevention tech niques and resources available.Firefighter FundraiserSpecial to the Courier Journal Summer Reading ContestOn Saturday, August 17, the Palatka Head quarters library held the 2013 Summer Reading Contest Awards Ceremony. I was playing the tight end position and was lined up right in front of the biggest corn fed hillbilly I had ever encountered in my life. One Mississippi, two Mississippi, down set, hut, hut and down to the ground I would go, to enjoy a mouth full of that tasty treat known to all football players as turf. I remember asking the coach if I could move positions, back to wide receiver, because, frankly, I was tired of getting the living tar beat out of me. The coaches com ment was, Why? You are tying that guy up. At the end of the game I was whipped like the family pig and had the bruises to show it. We lost that night, but I remem ber after the game the coach said, Good game Roberts, which really made me mad because the game was like being forced to watch reruns of a bad cooking show. As I started to walked away from the coach with my bad attitude, he said something that I have carried with me all my life and that is a quote from Vince Lombardi, Its not whether you get knocked down; its whether you get back up. Friday night the Raid ers took me back to 1979, as they took on Providence from Jacksonville. Before the game started I heard a couple of peo ple talking and one said, Holy Crap, Providence looks like a college team! Hey I have to agree with them on that one those boys were huge. Yes they had the Raiders out sized, and yes Providence was out powering them but not one Crescent City Raider team member gave up. From the very start it seemed that the Raiders were doomed to a no score night when on the first kick off, Provi dence recovered the ball and scored. From there it was a struggle but the Raiders seemed to slowly get back into the game. Up until the fourth quar ter the Raiders hadnt scored, but then in the final quarter the game seemed to turn around when Timmy Rogers and Dadrian Ellis both scored a touchdown. Final score was Providence 38, Raid ers 12. As the Bear once said, They didnt lose, they just ran out of time. Just to let you guys know, Ryne Beasley and Derick Rasher are ok. They were taken to the hospital and checked out. This coming Friday night, the Raiders will take on, Victory Christian Academy from Lakeland. Game time is at 7 p.m. at the Crescent City High School. I want to thank all of you who came out to support the Raiders this past Friday night. The stadium was about half full, now all we need to do is fill it the rest of the way up. In closing I want to say it again, This is one of the finest and most determined young group of men that I have ever seen in my life, and some of the best football you will ever see. These young men may get knocked down but I guarantee you they will get back up and as long as they are will ing to get out there and represent this community, the least we can do is show up at the games and stand behind them. Well hope to see you guys there Friday night, September 27, at 7 p.m. Game Brings Up Feelings of NostalgiaPhoto by Travis Roberts Crescent City and Jacksonville get tangled up in each other while making a play on Friday night. The art show began as a way for survivors to express, through art, the violence and abuse they have experienced in their lives; to tell their story to the community. Through the art show, we acknowledge the pain that survi vors have endured and honor their memories of their lives and visions for their future. Through the art show, we hope to reach others in the community who might be experiencing abuse in their lives, to let them know that they are not alone and it is okay to talk to someone. Through the art show, we also hope to show the community a vision of peace, of hope, for a better world. While violence is a dark subject, a subject most people would rather not talk about, there is still light to be found in that darkness, the light of a better day, of a world without violence. That is the goal of our art show this year: to help others imagine the hope of a better day, a world without violence. With that hope in mind, we are asking anyone who has experienced domestic, dating, or sexual violence to consider submitting a piece (or two) of original art to this years art show. We are also asking those in the community who have a vision for peace, for a world without violence, to consider submitting a piece (or two) of original art to this years art show. Together, we will paint Putnam County a picture of peace and hope for our future! Art submissions can be any medium, as long as they can t through a standard doorway. Submissions may be displayed anonymously but if you would like your piece returned af ter the show, you must leave contact information with the Prevention Coordinator. Submissions are due by Wednesday, September 25. If you have additional questions about the show or would like to submit a piece for the show, please contact Leah Emberton (Prevention Coordinator) by phone 325-4447 or email embertonl@leeconleehouse.org. The Lee Conlee House reserves the right to evaluate all art submitted for the show and retains nal approval for display of all art pieces submitted for the show.
