In Crescent City, liquid gold has its own meaning. It is, like oil, pumped from the ground, but it is water. Our City pumps it and doesnt have to pay a cent for it. Its free. The City simply has to pay a nominal fee to operate the pumps, but there is no charge for the water. The City has even installed new, state-of-the-art, meters so that they can sell the free water to every resident and/or business in town. They call it a utility. City resident, Angela Tischler, responded to my article from two weeks ago which pertained to the overly high costs for minimal water usage. She was very correct in pointing out how the high rate for minimal usage is unfair to everyone while it discourages conservation. I am of the opinion that the absurdly high minimal water fee is not really a utility cost; it is actually a poorly disguised tax. I am of the opinion that the City should use those fancy new meters to bill each and every one of its water users for exactly what we use. Then water costs will become true utility fees. It has become apparent that the City is beginning to feel squeezed financially. I offered what I believe is a viable solution. My suggestion was that we see if the Putnam County Sheriff, Jeff Hardy, could place a sub-station here in town and take over Crescent Citys law enforcement needs. Why? Because our town has gotten too small to afford the luxury of our own police department! If we cant afford a first rate police department we should, instead, utilize our Countys first rate Sheriffs office. As I pointed out, any time that anything serious happens here, the deputies are involved anyway. Why pay for two law enforcement agencies? A Mac Moyle also responded to my article. I do not know Mr. Moyle but appreciate the fact that he obviously reads me AND took the time to respond. However, I didnt understand what he meant when he stated that the notion has been raised before (the Sheriff taking over our crime fighting) and the general vibe was, we wouldnt touch Crescent City with a ten foot pole. Who said, or implied, such a thing? I once talked with the Sheriff about this and his thoughts were very positive on the issue. I have an idea that the Sheriff would welcome half of the funding Crescent City presently pays out for police. He already has the deputies, the cars and what it would take to provide our town with superior protection. Oh, and Mr. Moyle, I am sure that any deputy could shut down the Lake Stella park each evening. (I cannot imagine what you find courageous and responsible about the C.C.P.D. closing a park at night, but I am glad that it brings you comfort.) I dont think that justifies maintaining a police force we cant afford. Admittedly, I dont have all the answers to our budgetary problems. I would welcome some dialog in this newspaper from some of our elected officials and even, perhaps, our City Manager. Maybe someone could officially pose the idea of law enforcement consolidation to our Sheriff and discover whether or not he even has a real interest in it. Much to my surprise, Ive gotten unexpected feedback regarding both our high minimum water rate AND my proposal regarding law enforcement consolidation, and I dont just mean via letters to the Editor. I have been stopped in a restaurant, the grocery store and elsewhere by people who actually thanked me for broaching these subjects. Some of the comments have been somewhat unsettling and hint at graft and corruption. I find the phrase the fox is guarding the henhouse particularly bothersome when applied to our police chief and the folks who run City government. It is time for some public discussion to take place. Crescent Citys residents deserve to have answers and to know that their interests are being served responsibly. Nothing good comes from silence on any side of an issue. Instead of listening to me, let us hear from some people who actually know what they are talking about! It is time.Liquid Gold is Not Always OilLloyd Harris Local crime hot spots will be listed here weekly. Summit Street, P. O. Box 744, Crescent City, 32112, 698-1944 Thank you members of our South Putnam community who chose to participate in the Subway Feed a Friend food drive that took place on Thursday, August 22, at the Subway on North Summit Street in Crescent City. Thank you to all workers at the Crescent City Subway who commented that they were quite busy that day. The South Putnam Christian Service Center was fortunate to be chosen by the Centers food bank, Second Harvest North Florida, Jacksonville, to be the local agency to receive your donations. The need is continuous in our community. A food drive during the summertime is excellent because of the food received and the opportunity for awareness in the community of the need by our less fortunate neighbors. As it is written in Matthew 25:40, .I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of my brothers of mine, you did for me. It is because of your support, the Center is able to continue to fulfill the mission that reads, Helping Neighbors in Christs Name. My first thoughts were this is either a joke or a set up to entice people, like me, to write. Well, I looked at the calendar and its not April 1. Im not quite sure what the point of this story is since the first paragraph contributes nothing. It left this reader scratching her head and quietly saying, who? and huh? As I continued to read and, being a parent of two children, a male and a female, well past the high school prom age, I was horrified beyond belief that some dad would stoop to the level this story indicates Ive never known of, or been told of, a dad that would resort to such embarrassing and humiliating tactics. Are there really dads who would enlist the help of a stranger by paying them to spend time with their most prized accomplishment? All the dads Im aware of would NEVER consider such a childish and dangerous proposition. If this story were to tickle the funny bone, it was certainly lost on this reader. Personally, I believe the writers testosterone levels got the better of him and the roles were actually the reverse. Wendy Aucoin SatsumaResponse to Lipstick on Her Nose

Second Time Around The Thrift Shop in Lake Como at the Lake Como Methodist Church will be opening on Tuesday, September 3. The shop will be open on Tuesdays from 12 to 4 p.m. and on Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Lake Como breakfast will probably start on Thursday, October 17, but watch this column for a de nite time. Good Luck Toners Ed and Donna Toner are moving to Deland from Crescent City. They will be missed. Both Donna and Ed did a lot for Crescent City. The two of them, plus Carol Horner and a couple of other volunteers, painted the entire ceiling of the Crescent City Womans Club, which was no easy job. I will miss Ed helping boil the shrimp this year at the Low Country Boil on Saturday, September 21. We wish them good luck in their new home, which will also be shared by Donnas dad, Howard Speelman. Ed will be about six blocks from his work instead of the drive to Deland from Crescent City each day. Bricks Still Available Since Ed and Donna Toner are moving, another crew will take over for the bricks on the Walkway to History, in front of The Little Blue House Museum, next door to the Crescent City Womans Club. Cherie Register will handle the brick orders. There is still a need for 30 or more bricks before the walkway can be nished. Applications are available at City Hall, The Putnam County Courier Journal and Crescent City Womans Club. The cost is $25 per brick. Councilman Chuck Berger and Jody Braddock will help with the installation, and Ed Toner will come back for the nal installation. Call Cherie at 386-698-4113 or 386-336-3326. Fish Fry and Yard Sale In last weeks paper, the day was wrong for the Fish Fry and Yard Sale. It is on Saturday, (not Friday) September 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is a fund raiser for the Fitness Center. All the xins will be available, plus country cooking side dishes. (Im making jalapeo cornbread, maybe someone will bring collard greens.) The price will be $8. The event is being held at Jim and Shirley Grif ns driveway on Hwy 17, across the road from Geos Autos. Everyone is welcome. Bob Martin, CEO, and the Board of Directors for the Putnam County Fitness Center are delighted with the cooperation they are receiving from the Pomona Park Community and the volunteers are super. Friends from Texas I was very glad to have our friends from Texas, Gary and Nancy Tong, stop by for a visit enroute home from visiting an aunt in South Carolina. We mostly ate, visited and watched it rain. Nancy helped prepare nger foods for the Pomona Park Opry, which we attended on Friday night. They enjoyed the show. Gary received a kiss from S-ter C, which was interesting. My sister, Mary Lou Hutchinson, from Oak Hill, also joined us. It was a good time Pomona Park Opry The rst Pomona Park Opry was a huge success. Talent was gathered from all around the county, and our local talent also performed. The weather was rainy and messy, but that did not stop the folks from coming out. Music was provided by Jerry Horner, Utah Bill McKendrick, Tommy and Ton, Tyler, Charlie Fortner, Frank Denoux, and Stan Burgoney (Stan the Man Drummer.) A comedy performance by Ster C, was hilarious. Our two local musicians, Hoyt Roberts and Jack Eichenlaub (who plays for the Senior Friday each week and also at nursing homes and birthday parties) performed. Jerry Horner did great as Master of Ceremonies and also as a performer. Pomona Park Town Clerk Cindy Hair and her crew did the decorating. Shirley Grif n and the Neighborhood Watch furnished the refreshments, with help from Councilman Joe Svingala and wife, Joyce, and Yvonne Munn and her husband, Charlie. Councilwoman Pat Mead, did the introductions and announcements. On Saturday night, Melanie Thompson sang the National Anthem. Carol Horner was in charge of the sound. It was really a community effort. Crescent City Mayor, Joe Santa, said he wished Crescent City had a facility like the Pomona Park Community Center. Many comments were made about the lovely old building with its memories of long ago. Much was said about doing this again next year. Good job everyone! Full House for Horners Two old school chums of Jerry Horner came from Maryland and Pennsylvania to attend the Pomona Park Opry. Jerrys friends were Bobby Kline, from Pennsylvania, and Dick and Pat Cook, from Maryland. Jerry and Carol had fun showing their friends around the area. One day was spent at the beach. Kline tried to ride a huge turtle in the kids park. Jerry said he probably saw the article about the purple chicken. A wonderful time was had by all reminiscing about school days and growing up in Maryland. One day Carol took Pat on a walking tour of the Antique Shops in Crescent City. She loved it. They all enjoyed St. Augustine and Crescent City and plan on coming back some day. Congratulations Diane There is a new grandchild for Diane Rails of Pomona Park. Phoebe Phelps was born on June 26, in Cardington, Ohio. Her parents are Kristine and Jared Phelps. Congratulations to all of you. Happy Birthday Marilyn Saturday, August 24 was a good day for Marilyn Roberts, when about 75 friends and family gathered at Howe Memorial Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, to celebrate her 80th birthday. Her sister, Donnell, and husband, Perry Wilhite came from West Monroe, Louisiana, to give the party with help from Donnells son, Peter Petroski and his ance, Sara Ragsdale and many of Marilyns local friends. Punch and cake were served to all the guests with much visiting and picture taking by good friend David Frank and many others. Later, dinner at D.J. and Gail Wiltses home for the family was a good nish to a most memorable day. Happy birthday Marilyn, we hope you have many more. Grandson for Bonnie Bonnie McLane came from Elmire, New York, to meet her new two-month -old grandson, Gabriel and to visit with his father, Steven and mother, Martha, and Bonnies other son, Ryan. She was having dinner with longtime friend, Ginny Gaffney when another friend, Irene Hundley, dropped by to say hello. Bonnie says hello to all the Florida friends she missed. She was a houseguest of Darlene Curry in Pierson.Rite of Passage InitiativeRite of Passage Initiative, (ROPI), a Crescent City faith based, nonpro t, mentoring group for girls, whose aim is to provide leadership and life skills to at-risk girls of all ethnic groups, will be launching the Night of 1000 Girls Initiative. In years past, Labor Day weekend in Crescent City brought about a urry of activity. Various civic organizations hosted fun and fundraising events that brought the community together. The Jaycees, Rotary, the Masonic Lodge or perhaps even the Fire Department or other organizations, would hold a benet barbecue or serve fried chicken or sh dinners, to raise funds for their projects, and to give the community an outing. Some of those organizations are no longer active in the community, while others continue to hold fundraisers in support of local projects designed to benet the greater community. What is now known as Dexter Beach was often the site of these events, and games, as well as swimming, shing and boating, gave families an opportunity for recreation while supporting a worthy cause. Sometimes there were reworks at dark. Many years ago, these events were the grand nale of summer, as school started the next day. While it wasnt a Labor Day activity, and is not intended as a fundraiser, this year the only thing happening was the Movie in the Park. This event is sponsored by the City of Crescent City, supported by various local business partners, and occurs nearly every month, weather permitting, at Eva Lyon Park, downtown Crescent City. This months movie was Madagascar 3, and was quite well attended. It was nice to see families out together for an evening of fun, kinda like in the old days! She has studied watercolor with George Reed, Stephen Blackburn, Cynthia Seawoman, Theresa Luke, Diane Nielsen and Shirley De Pasquale. Lord can be reached at charhal02@gmail. com or by calling 386559-3379. Keep Putnam Beautiful (KPB) will lead the local effort of cleaning up the St. Johns River, Lake Crescent and area boat ramps in partnership with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary Palatka Detachment #14-5. KPB is in need of volunteers to help out on Saturday, September 21 for this International Coastal Cleanup event; youth groups, churches, civic clubs, or individuals. Volunteers with boats are especially needed to help with cleaning up and down the St. Johns River waterway. Community service hours are available. The following areas are targeted: Palatka Boat Ramp and Riverfront Park; Veterans Park, East Palatka (at the foot of the bridge); East Palatka Boat Ramp; Browns Landing (end of Lund Rd.); Murphys Island; West River Road Boat Ramp; Crescent Lake Park and boat ramps; and the St. Johns River waterway. A station will be set up at the Palatka City Dock, beginning at 8 a.m., where volunteers can sign in and receive data sheets, grabbers, vests, trash bags, and water. Supplies will also be available at Veterans Park on the east side of the bridge. The Coast Guard Auxiliary Detachment #1405 will provide free boat inspections, environmental education materials and giveaways. The St. Johns River Water Management District airboat will be on display, as well as the Sherriffs Office Boat (unless an emergency arises). A hotdog cook out will begin at 11 a.m. for volunteers at the Palatka City Dock. Get involved now, and be a part of the Sea of Change. In 2012, Ocean Conservancys International Coastal Cleanup mobilized more than 500,000 volunteers to collect 10 million pounds of trash from coastal beaches and inland waterways in 97 countries and locations. Often times, volunteers pick up in their area, but dont report their collection efforts to KPB. KPB asks, that at a minimum, you call into the office and report how many bags were collected and the number of volunteers that helped so they can include it in the local numbers that are sent to the Ocean Conservancy. This data is collected worldwide and included in their annual report. Reports on coastal litter have played a direct role in shaping national legislation to reduce the problem and in helping towns across the country create recycling and other programs to defeat debris. To sign up contact Keep Putnam Beautiful at 386-325-9598, email kpb@palatkafl.gov or visit http:// www.oceanconservancy.org/ for more information. September 4, 2013 COURIER JOURNAL Section B Overshadowing the football games we watched least Saturday, some of which were downright exciting, was the latest Johnny Manziel episode. Manziel, as you probably know, is the Texas A&M quarterback who won the Heisman Trophy last year as an 18-yearold freshman phenom, and who has managed to screw up several times since the award was passed out last December. I dont think there is much doubt that he was guilty of these screw ups, but I also feel that an 18-year-old, who is under close scrutiny by the press and everybody else, needs to be given some slack if for no other reason than considering his age and, in this case, the absence of someone to advise him. Hes had no one to take him under his or her wing during this period. It could also be that there has been an attempt to steer him down the right path, but if there has been, there is nothing that I have read about in regards to that. It is a case of maturity, or lack of it in Manziels case, which I understand is something that he is expected to have, to wit, the behavior of past Heisman winners. Problem is that he has a problem with this maturity thing and no doubt will overcome that real soon with the proper discipline and guidance, but I dont think we should write him off, as have most of the sports pundits and many coaches, Some of these people have forecasted that the incident that occurred Saturday when he lipped off at some Rice players who were taunting him could very well result in the ring of the A&M head coach and dismissal of Manziel. Why write off a cocky kid with loads of talent who, just prior to the incident, had thrown three for three TDs in a classic performance in a quarter and a half ? He was accused of disrespecting his coach when he came to the sideline because he did not stop and talk to him. How would you know that Tumlin had not told him to go sit down, or that he disrespected the team by his action? I noticed that he was talking to his teammates on the sideline and there were exchanges of friendliness between them. I dont condone his reaction to the taunts, but we dont need to go hog wild about it. This will a pass over and Manziel will continue to play at a high level. Thats it, as far as Im concerned. What we got out of the Saturday games was a basic understanding that Alabama is vulnerable and Clemson has all the trappings of a legitimate national championship contender. Im not sure that the Georgia-Clemson contest was not one of the best Ive witnessed in years. I dont have the nal stats from the game, but the teams managed to total close to 1,000 yards in offense. The key to that game, to me at least, came when Georgia fumbled a eld goal snap, which would have tied the game at 38. Clemson managed to run out the clock with some crucial rst downs in the last three or four minutes. The Tigers showed overall offensive speed, which Georgias young defensive could not handle. The Bulldogs were impressive on offense; normally enough to win most games, but the defense was the key problem. The Florida Gators were not impressive in beating Toledo 24-6, but with the Miami game coming up next week, I suppose you could say they didnt want to show all their cards. Who knows if that was the case? Mack Brown, the running back who subbed for Matt Jones, looked strong, but the Gators are going to need more offense to survive Miami, much less Tennessee, Georgia, etc. A healthy Jeff Driskell will be helpful when Georgia faces South Carolina next week. They could go 0-2 to start the season, which happened a couple of years ago. They then won their last ten games, as I recall, and went to Atlanta. Next time, Ill work on baseball and the upcoming playoffs, and how my favorite teams, the Braves, Red Sox and Rays, might fare on the march to the World Series.
