During the June 29, Pre-Independence Day celebration, Dr. Addison Carey, Professor of Political Science at Tulane University, was honored as a Native Veteran, along with Dr. John Collette and Marilyn Roberts. Dr. Carey was unable to attend the formal ceremony and lifelong resident and sister-inlaw, Mrs. Eloise Carey, accepted his award in his absence. His declaration read: From your humble beginnings in a house on Denver Road, you graduated from Central Academy High School in Palatka, Florida, became an Advanced Army Infantryman in your youth, even sustaining four gunshot wounds during Battle in Korea. A man of clearly uncompromising dedication, youve continued to serve your fellowman through your many community-minded achievements including your accomplishments in higher education. We are so proud of your heritage that begins with our little town and deeply thank you for your military service and resolute commitment to our country. May you always think of Crescent City as home in your heart. Welcome Home. Dr. Careys Military medals and declarations include: The Purple Heart, Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), Korean Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, United Nations Service Medal, Combat Infantrymans Badge, Unit Citation from Sigman Rhee, former President of South Korea. His esteemed career has been Census Enumerator for the U. S. Bureau of the Census in the Department of Commerce, 1960; professor of political science courses at Southern University at New Orleans, including service as department chair, division chair and administrative assistant to the Chancellor, 1960-2003. His career as a Political Science professor includes the University of New Orleans, Tulane University, University of Northern Iowa and he directed the Visiting Scholars Program at Southern University at New Orleans. He was the First Vice President of the Tulane University Alumni Board of Directors 1986-1994. His active participation in various associations span from being on the Board of Supervisors and Elections for the Parish of New Orleans, Civil Service Commission for the City of New Orleans and Commissioner from 19861992. Hes served multiple memberships and board positions relative to his military service, most notably the American Legion, post 409 member and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 15 and life member and Judge Advocate of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He has a gentle and powerful presence. His captivating smile and thoughtful expressions about his family, his memories of Crescent City and his love for the American freedoms he fought for clearly described the genuine gratitude of this unassuming, gentleman. I felt honored to be in his presence, says Charlotte Santa, First Lady of Crescent City. Roberts Care Center Began Admitting Patients AgainPalatka The Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center will began admitting patients again on Thursday July 25, after completing a remodeling of the facility due to a sprinkler malfunction on June 1. A refresh of the interiors as well as updates to the existing facility are a preview of the contemporary dcor which will be represented in the six-bed expansion presently under construction. The care center remodel included new paint, flooring, and other interior finishes to existing patient rooms and common areas. The kitchen is also being expanded because we are expecting six more beds, said Haven Hospice Administrator Deborah Strickland. While the interior of the Roberts Care Center was being refreshed with up-to-date interior finishes, Haven Hospice ensured that patients received care at two other Haven locations: the E.T. York Care Center in Gainesville and the Custead Care Center in Orange Park. Haven Hospice has also made every effort to accommodate employees in positions throughout the organization while the remodel was underway. Every day I am reminded how Haven Hospice has become an essential component of this community, said Strickland. The care and comfort that we provide at the Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center is needed here and that need is intensifying with an aging population. With our newly remodeled and expanded care center, Haven Hospice will be honored and privileged to touch even more lives in the future. As indicated, he was a royal mess when it came to pulling terrible goof-ups. Lets continue where I left off. We had gone hunting. We were each on hunting stands in the woods where we had been dropped off at about day break. It was a frosty morning and somewhat miserable just standing there waiting for a deer to appear. However, as the sun slowly climbed above the horizon and the day gradually warmed, the task of staying warm changed to the task of staying awake. Mike had been dropped off at the horse trailer, which was parked just down the road from where I had been placed. (By the way, the road was a mere two rut sand lane created by logging trucks.) It was almost noon. In spite of removing a layer or two of clothing, the warmth still made one feel sleepy and lazy. That, coupled with the boredom of just waiting for that elusive maybe deer it was all a young lad could do to remain awake. Forget about remaining alert! It was at this point in the day when I heard the sound of a shotgun being fired. I knew the sound had come from Mikes stand and I wondered if he had shot a deer. Being such a newbie I knew that it was highly unlikely that Mike had killed a deer, but stranger things have happened. I wanted badly to run to where Mike was and see what had happened but I knew better than to leave my stand. Thus, I waited. After about 30 minutes of silence, the still air was once again breeched with the sound of another shot. This time it was not a shotgun but, instead, it was a rifle. I knew Mike had not made that shot. Now I was really curious. Soon a pickup truck came rambling along with my big brother, J.J., driving and my Dad riding in the front passenger seat. Neither looked happy! It was obvious that they were here to pick me up. Mike was sitting on the back, atop of the dog box. I bounded up onto the truck and excitedly asked Mike what he had shot? It was then that I noticed that Mike didnt look so good either AND that there was a saddle and all of a horses tack piled atop of the dog box too. I also noticed that Mike was crying. This didnt look good. Finally, between pitiful sobs, Mike told me that he had shot his Daddys horse. Evidently, Mikes dad had ridden up to the horse trailer where Mike was on stand, tied his horse to the trailer and taken the truck to load up some dogs. While his Dad was gone, Mike had aimed his shotgun at the horses head and pretended to shoot it. Sadly, the safety was not on and the gun fired at only two feet from the poor horse. The horse dropped to her knees but then struggled and got back up. That horse just stood there bleeding until my brother returned. The second shot I had heard was that of my brother putting that poor horse out of her misery. Later when I had digested all of what had happened regarding the horse, I asked Mike why he had not gone ahead and shot the horse again instead of letting her stand there and suffer for so long? His response was; Are you nuts? I had already shot Daddys horse once; no way was I going to do that again! Amazingly, though it seemed to me, Mikes only punishment was that he gave up his shotgun and was NEVER allowed to hunt again. I would have expected my father to take off his belt and nearly kill that boy. I guess it was obvious even to my dad that Mike had suffered enough. He really felt bad for the horse. We all did. (Sadly, that horse had a yearling colt which was killed the following year when it got out of its pen and was running up and down the power line while exercising. It hit a guide wire from one of the poles, flipped over and broke its back.) That was the end of Mikes hunting career and in just a few more years he joined the Army and I never saw him again until we met at his mothers funeral some 50 years later. While it was good to see him after so many years, I was hardly surprised to notice that Mike now only has one arm. While logging in Washington State, Mike cut his own arm off with a chainsaw. Did I mention that Mike was a screw up? Well, I could not have meant it more. Oh, and I couldnt make this stuff up if I tried! You Shot Daddys What??Lloyd Harris Local crime hot spots will be listed here weekly. As always, in any emergency situation you are asked to call 911.Crescent City Police Department Needs Your HelpLetter to the Editor Hi Angela, So glad to hear that you are feeling better. I like your proposed article. I can share with you some information on sidewalks. The sidewalk on U.S. 17 was built with a fund the Florida Dept. of Transportation has for federal and state highways. The City Commission and I (as Mayor) made the request for a multi-purpose trail in the 1990s. When I became County Commissioner, I made sure it remained on the priority list and it eventually happened. I am delighted to see people use it every time I drive past it. The State has more money than a City does. It took more than a decade to get it, but I am glad we did. The County received an unexpected grant for shovel ready projects a couple of years ago. We decided that since it was a fairly small amount (that we could not do a big project), we would offer it to the Cities who could use it right away. There wasnt enough money to purchase land with and the Cities had to work with what they had available to expedite the project in a short time frame. Crescent City used their portion on the part around Lake Stella. They may have added a little more area, but I dont recall what it was. I would suggest that you check with the City and see what their plans are about a sidewalk on C.R. 308. There may already be one. If not, present it to the City Council if it can be included as part of a plan. You will probably gather supporters for this when your article comes out. All local governments are having a tough time with their budgets now and sidewalks are usually not on the top of their list of things that have to be done. There are a couple of possibilities for funding without using the general fund. One possibility is that the person who develops the unimproved land on the northside of C.R. 308 could be required to put a sidewalk in when they choose to develop that property, especially if it is part of a plan. Another idea is to use some of the funding that comes from the Better Place Plan to develop sidewalks where they are needed. Your City Commissioners may have other ideas. I am glad to see you get involved again. Nancy Harris Crescent City Facebook ChatCar washes. Billie Hill Palatka Rummage sales and yard sales. The following article appeared in the July 19, 1957, issue of the Crescent City Journal. Scouting was a big part of community life then, and scouts often went on real adventures. Some of these trips were quite unique for a small town group, made possible by the dedicated support of adult leaders and businesses in Crescent City. Boy Scout Troop 42 on 15 day Trip to Sugar Loaf Mountain Eleven thirty Sunday night, July 14, nally arrived. Nineteen happy, excited boys had reached the moment they had been waiting for the twentieth scout, Bill Butler, who would have, no doubt, enjoyed the attention his absence created. Mowing lawns, running paper routes and odd jobs arent enough to keep time from dragging when something special is in the ofng. The big red scout stuffed bus, which Pilchers Garage had entirely overhauled, free of charge, for the complete safety of the boys was supplied for the trip by the McBride Packing House of Seville, and the blue and white pickup truck was loaned to the boys by Pilchers Chervolet. The eleven thirty huddle was responsible for the decision to start with the bus load of eighteen boys and three men, leaving Jim Hires and Edward Long in the pickup to wait for Billy. An hour and a half later, the whole show was on the road, Waynesville, North Carolina bound, taking with them prayers for the safety of all. The Howe Memorial Methodist Church, the sponsor, and Ray Knapp, Charlie Long, Emmet Usher, W. C. Fowler, Charles Bush, Ira Parrish, Wilson Edwards, Clayton Frank and Jim Hires, the committeemen behind these boys, not only help make trips like this possible but actually provide scouting for the boys in this area. The sponsor committeemen, Scouts and their parents would like to thank the following businesses, individuals and clubs for their nancial support: Peoples Bank of Crescent City, Town of Crescent City, Rotary Club, Lions Club, Prestons Insurance Agency, Producers Hardware, Leslie Pigue, Millers Grocery, Roswell Aaron, Thomas Drugs, B. Their itinerary includes sports, sight seeing, devotions and many other interesting special treats. Bill Butler, Joe Frank, Bobby Sharpe, Edward Long, Jeff Long, Johnny Long, Terry Austin, Mike Hires, Larry Hunter, Rick Ellis, Charles Bush, Billy Edwards, David Godshaw, Jim Hamby, Harvey Jordan, Jack Stevenson, Herbert Usher, Billy Radtke, Don Stockton and Ray Sanders were accompanied by George Schunneman, Thurman McCamey, Wilson Edwards, Clayton Frank and Jim Hires on the trip. Florida Trend has once again listed Capital City Bank among its 2013 Best Companies to Work For in Florida. Out of the 100 small, medium and large companies recognized, Capital City Bank ranked #26 in the Large Companies category. Within this category, Capital City Bank is one of only two entities in the banking industry to be named. Recognizing how important staffing decisions are to the strength of a company and, ultimately, to their ability to provide exceptional service to their clients, Florida Trend focused heavily on hiring practices when compiling this years Best Companies list. In addition to evaluating a candidates hard skills, the companies recognized also emphasize other areas when making hiring decisions, including how well they will fit into the companys culture. Our associates are our most valuable resource. They are the foundation of what we do, said Bill Smith, Capital City Bank Group chairman, president and CEO. At Capital City Bank, we aspire to be more than a bank to our clients and emphasize creating positive, memorable and exceptional service experiences. Our associates make it possible to live up to this promise. Im proud of our team of bankers and honored that Capital City Bank has been recognized in this way for two consecutive years. The only statewide employer recognition program, the annual Best Companies to Work For list was created by Florida Trend and Best Companies Group and is endorsed by the HR Florida State Council. Participating companies underwent an exhaustive evaluation of their workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems and demographics. The process also included a survey to measure employee satisfaction. The combined scores determined the top companies and the final ranking. In order to be considered for the Best Companies list, the firm must be a publicly or privately held for-profit or not-forprofit business. The entity must have been in business a minimum of one year, have a facility in the state of Florida and a minimum of 15 full or parttime employees in the state. The 2013 issue is the fourth annual Best Companies edition, and the second year that Capital City Bank has participated. Downtown Palatka, Inc. and Create! For eight years during his FMP/FFWCC career Currul headed a squad for the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, which was funded by NOAA. His interest in photography was rekindled during a NOAA sponsored trip to South Africa in 2002. Currul and his wife, Brenda, moved to their present home in North Florida in 2003. Curruls work has evolved demonstrating his professionalism, creativity and sense of composition. Currul and Brendas travels to numerous scenic locations and National Parks over the years are exhibited in his landscape and nature photography. Currul is a member of the Photography club of Flagler County, The Florida Photographers Group, the Photographic Society of America, The Palatka Art League, and Create. Fresh, vibrant cushions and pillows are a great way to add color and texture to your patio. Need a color theme? Add a container garden as well. Second, light up the night. Once the sun goes down its time to get your shindig started. Add string lights, tiki torches or outdoor decorative light to add ambiance and to keep the party going. Third, upgrade your grill. Whether you want a different grill or type, think about what you like. If you are a burger you are more of a BBQ fan, look into getting a smoker. For more ideas on livening up your outdoor space, visit Lowes in Palatka, located at 500 N. SR 19, or visit Lowes.com.
