Friday, July 19, William BJ Laurie celebrated his one year anniversary of returning to Crescent City after an automobile accident on April 29, 2012, that left him a quadriplegic. His recovery has been slow but steady. During the past year he has attended several local events such as Tip or Treat in Palatka to benefit Christian Service Center, The Crescent City Rotarys Swine and Wine and the Catfish Festival. He has been active in many family gathers throughout the year, as much as his health would allow. Now that conventional methods of therapy such as physical and occupational have taken him as far as possible, his progress has plateaued. The next step is to undergo an experimental medical procedure which may help Laurie achieve his goals of regaining the use of his hands and possibly even walking one day! The procedure is known as stem cell therapy, and has already been shown to greatly improve the function and condition of people with spinal cord injuries. Research in the United States has shown that rats with spinal cord injuries were able to walk again after stem cell therapy. Due to politics and the controversial nature of stem cell research, trials with human subjects in this country lag behind other countries such as China, Germany and Panama. After a great deal of research, Lauries family has determined that the best center for stem cell treatment would be the Stem Cell Institute in Panama City, Panama. For more information their website is www.Cellmedicine. com. This particular institute has treated multiple spinal cord patients, with very encouraging results. They even receive frequent patient referrals from the University of Miami, which is considered a world leader in neurological injury research. In case you have political, religious or other reservations about stem cell therapy, this center only uses stem cells from the individuals own body, as well as donated and ethically obtained umbilical cord stem cells from full term births. No fetal stem cells are used. Presently this particular use of stem cell therapy is not available in the United States, and is not covered by insurance therefore the cost is solely the responsibility of the patient. The LaurieTurner families can pay some of the costs. Their goal is to raise $50,000 to cover the cost of the treatment, lodging, airfare, medical equipment rental, etc. In order to raise the money for the medical treatment, multiple fundraisers are being held, beginning this Saturday, July 27 with a Huge Rummage Sale at the Market Square in Crescent City from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Donations can be dropped off at the Putnam County Courier Journal located at 330 N. Summit Street in Crescent City, 386698-1644 and at Merrill Hancock and Turner Insurance located at 1301 St. Johns Avenue in Palatka, 386-3250100. Pick up can be arranged by calling the numbers listed above. Laurie is hopeful and excited about the potential benefits this treatment will have for him, and also enthusiastic about the opportunity to help others through his participation. Stem cell therapy has been shown to be effective in the treatment of not just spinal cord injuries, but many other diseases as well, such as osteoarthritis, heart disease, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and others. By participating in this experimental treatment, it may help to advance important research which will ultimately make stem cell treatment available to many other sick and injured people. There was no way around it, thats just what you do when you have pets, right? So when I arrived at the Humane Society of Northeast Florida, in Hollister, I was a little over whelmed at the number of abandoned and rescued pets that I saw, all of which acted so happy to see me and begged for my attention. I was greeted by Cindy Wardecke, current president, and Kathie Kelly, second vice president of the organization. They took me on a quick tour of the facility, introduced me to the animals and telling me some of the stories behind them. After that we sat down to discuss some of the challenges facing the organization. The Humane Society of Northeast Florida is a no kill shelter that has been in operation since 1978 and can house approximately 160 dogs and cats. The facility currently operates with 12 staff members, all of which are volunteers. At present they are at capacity and cannot house any more animals. This means that any animals they are not able to take, go to Animal Control and with over 3,000 animals euthanized annually in Putnam County alone, these animals run the risk of never finding a family of their own. We are in desperate need of families looking to adopt pets, said Kelly, there really is a dog or cat for everyone here and our staff can help match the family to the pet. All the animals at the shelter are vetted to insure they are suitable pets, as well as being spayed/neutered, micro chipped and current on all shots. million animals are euthanized every year in the U.S. not counting animals that are hit by cars or succumb to injuries or disease, says Wardecke, there really is no need to buy a pet from a breeder, try adopting first. If you already have a pet, be sure you are a responsible pet owner by spaying or neutering and micro chipping your pet. If you have not done these already, the Humane Society offers low cost spay, neuter and microchip services to help pet owners. With an operating expense of approximately $900 per day, the shelter is in constant need of donations. Besides money, the shelter also needs cleaning and office supplies, pet food, over the counter pet medications and donations to sell at their thrift store. So if you are thinking of adding a new pet to your family, able to volunteer your time, donate monetarily or just want to help in some way, contact the Humane Society of Northeast Florida, and see how you can make a difference in an animals life. facebook.com/putnamcountycourierjournal Animals in Need of Their Forever Homes Mike Jones Staff Writer Suicide Survivor WorkshopThe Hospice of Citrus County of the Nature Coast Wings Grief Services will present the Suicide Survivor Workshop. I mentioned in last weeks column that Mike was a unique individual. Thats putting it kindly. Fact is, Mike was a fairly general screw up and managed to make a mess out of just about every situation. But, Mike was a hugely entertaining friend and playmate because he made everything so interesting. I was required to stay on my toes and managed to not be in trouble every time that he was. No easy task. My Dad has an iron clad rule which was that no child (of course, only boys) was allowed to go hunting until he was 12 years of age. Thus, at Christmas of the year I became 12; I received the gift of a 12 gauge shotgun and was allowed to go to the hunting camp with the other men. Mike, being a year behind me in age had to wait another year. By-the-way let me insert something here. Several people have asked if my father was really as mean as I have depicted him in my writing. Yes! He was very hard to live with. He was the oldest of 12 children and became the father of eight. He absolutely did not have any patience with kids; especially, kids who didnt mind and/or behave to his specifications. He believed that good children were seen and not heard. He also believed that we were his slaves. My young life was no walk in the park but that is not to say that I didnt benefit from it. The old mans sternness has served me well in later life. Now back to Mike. My first year at the hunting camp proved to be non-eventful. I did kill my first deer, a little button buck, which was totally illegal. In addition, I learned why I was so welcomed at the camp. I was very useful and had lots of chores. I washed dishes, fed dogs and horses, built camp fires and anything else that needed doing. However, I loved every minute of it. The following year, after Mike had turned 12, he got his first shotgun and came hunting. He didnt come but a few times before he was banned from ever coming back. We all realized right off that Mike should never be around guns or bullets. Early on, while all of the men (including Mike and I) were sitting around the camp fire one cold night, Mike pulled his first big faux pas. I believe this was the very first weekend of his short hunting career. Sitting around the campfire consisted of men draped over the wood pile or sitting atop an upturned log which made a seat. In addition, there were usually two or three men spinning (that meant they were standing and warming one side and then turning to warm the other.) All the while there was usually lots of good natured banter and teasing. Young boys who kept their mouths shut could (and did) learn a lot about life. This particular evening, Mike was present in body but not in mind, which was fairly normal for him. Absent mindedly, Mike picked up a matchbox which was lying nearby and tossed it into the fire. He probably assumed it had matches in it and would burst into flames. What it contained was not matches, what it contained were bullets (22 shells.) All of a sudden those shells started firing their casings off and a dozen men and boys wisely took off running. Fortunately, no one was hit, but Mike was in more trouble than I had ever seen him in. My Dad was MAD but left Mike up to my brother, the one Mike thought was his Dad. The next morning, we went hunting. Each of us was put on a stand. We were each expected to stay on our stand, be very still and watchful. Hopefully a deer would come slipping by or the dogs would pick up a scent and chase a deer toward ones stand. My Dad and older brothers rode horses through the scrub (woods) in the hope of jumping a hiding deer and causing it to run. If they couldnt shoot it, the dogs would take chase. Being on a stand could be pretty boring. Yet, we were not to abandon our stand for any reason. Mikes stand on this particular day was atop the horse trailer which was parked in the woods. This was a choice stand because it afforded one a place to sit high enough to see over the palmettos. I was down the road at the next stand. No dogs were running and it was almost noon. The once frosty morning had warmed considerably and it was getting hard to stay awake. Suddenly the stillness was broken with the sound of a lone shotgun shot. That shot was from the next stand, Mikes! I couldnt believe my ears. Had Mike shot a deer? He must have at least tried to since we were forbidden to shoot at anything else. Next week Ill tell you what Mike shot on what turned out to be the very last day of his hunting career! The Rest of the Nephew TaleLloyd Harris Local crime hot spots will be listed here weekly. As always, in any emergency situation you are asked to call 911.Crescent City Police Department Needs Your HelpLetters to the Editor Dear Editor: We now have two wonderful super sidewalks, wide and handicap accessible, apparently constructed to encourage walking. I had tried short portions of both. The one along Summit (Hwy 17) I had taken from Wendys to the center of town, and the Gran Rondo one I had walked a short distance to go watch the birds on Lake Stella. As I regained strength after a devastating illness, I took longer and longer walks every day. One beautiful Sunday morning following a thunderstorm the night before, I decided to walk a full circle starting at the traffic light and using the handicap walks. On Central Ave. I walked west to reach Gran Rondo and the wide sidewalk. Past the gazebo, the Bird Island observation platform, and along the wide cement ribbon. There were no birds this morning, but no motorboats either. The family of wild rabbits, which I had seen before, didnt come out this time. It was perfectly quiet. I went past the playground and followed the marked path on the other side of the street. Two Sand hill Cranes feeding from a bird feeder in somebodys front yard ignored me. The problem came when I reached Vernon Ave. (County Road 308). I could have crossed the road and reach the sidewalk going west, but I needed to go east and connect back with the sidewalk along Summit (Hwy 17). The distance is only three blocks, but how do I get there safely and legally? There is an extra narrower lane marked on the pavement, apparently meant for bicycles which I took since it was my best choice, the other being walking up and down curbs and on tall wet grass. On the other side of the street there is no sidewalk at all since some home owners have extended their fences to the curb. I chose to trust my life to the drivers and walked on the pavement. The traffic is heavy and fast on Vernon Ave. Even in the early morning, cars zoomed past me the first two blocks, to the Oakwood and Main intersections, and then suddenly my lane disappeared. So much for handicap accessibility. I stepped over the curb and crossed the filling station before rejoining the safe sidewalks. Seems so strange that we have no safe way to walk along those three blocks of Vernon Ave. More so if you consider that it is the most direct way from the elementary school to the center of town. There must be a reason why our beautiful new sidewalks left such a gap, but I fail to see it. I will keep on walking, but not on Vernon Ave. Angela Tischler Crescent City Facebook ChatThe sound of waves at the beach. Brooke Frank Pomona Park My mothers voice. Sherri Mills-Pye Pomona Park Crescent City on Foot Dear Editor: Thank you very much for participating in our pre-Independence Day celebration on June 29. I was both astounded and happy to see HUNDREDS of people attend this first all-citizen and all-volunteer event, promoted and enthusiastically enhanced by the Crescent City Yacht Club, the Community Revitalization Association and many other sponsors previously noted by Pam Calder. Still, at the center of this project was a faithful group of local individuals (Crescent City Celebration Committee) who involved themselves simply for the improvement and expanded unity of our beloved little town. Each individual in this core band of enthusiasts dedicated their time, talent and often just simple encouragement to see this happen for you; they are passionate about their goals to improve and invigorate life here for us all. There are a few others I want to personally thank, as in their own way they bridged many invisible gaps that were not necessarily anticipated; these persons jumped into action spontaneously with a spirit of support with vitality, enthusiasm and caring that immeasurably complimented our mission. They include: Alease and Andrew Stroman, Julian Ferguson and Corrine Hosein (who stopped by to say Hi and stayed for hours helping us make posters.) Critical to our success were the Putnam County Sheriffs Police Athletic League volunteers, and especially Lakewood Nursing Center and Three Bananas who fed these hard working, incredibly responsible young adults. I also sincerely thank the members of the VFW Bass Capital Post 10177, the ROTC, Boy Scouts of America and the dedicated crafting group at the Crescent City Womans Club. To Dr. John Collette, Dr. Addison Carey, Marilyn Roberts and Nonie Garcia, we all thank you sincerely. Now this worthy (successful) group is looking to what our future holds (think Christmas Festival!) The finest example of trusting encouragement I can share is from the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Reiter, Jenny Reiter and their associates who gave a gracious donation of seed money to encourage our efforts to CELEBRATE this cherished traditional holiday. If you love the spirit and unity of Crescent City, regardless of what your address is, who your relatives are, whats in your bank account, if youre employed or your gender, political persuasion or color of your skin, YOU ARE INVITED to join this hearty group! Our next meeting is Thursday, August 13 at City Hall in Crescent City. We will begin at 6 p.m. If youre hungry, please bring a snack as there will be no refreshments. Were here to establish effective committees to pull off the best Christmas ever so please mark your calendars!! Thanks for the Flowers Dick Van Trump called Ginny Gaffney to say his wife, Betty was excited about the owers and cards Ginny sent her from the Crescent City Womans Club of which she was a member for many years. Betty now lives at the Williston Rehab Center in Williston. The rehab center joined Dick in furnishing a cake and ice cream for the residents. Dick said thanks for giving Betty a wonderful day. If you would like to send her a card or a note the address is 300 NW First Avenue, Williston, FL 32696. Ice Cream Social Success The room was full of people at the Pomona Park Community Center eating ice cream, talking, laughing and having a good time at the fund raiser for the Putnam Family Fitness Center in Pomona Park on Saturday, July 13. The Fitness Center will be moved into their new location at 213 Perry Street next week. The center is located on Perry Street behind Hills Hardware and Pomona Park Pizza. Silver Sneakers and Zumba will resume at their regular times at the new location. The phone number is 386649-8784 (put this on your fridge as the number has changed.) The Tae Kwon Do classes will be held at the Pomona Park Community Center on Main Street for now on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6 to 7 p.m. these classes are for adults only. Now that the center is within walking distance of so many, come on down and join. CEO Bob Martin says thanks to all of the volunteers who are helping with the move and thanks to the Town of Pomona Park for making us feel so welcome. So now what we really need is more members. So Yall Come! Visit to South Carolina James and Betty Tison spent the Fourth of July weekend in Spartansburg, South Carolina with daughter and husband, Donna and Joe Owens. They spent a couple of days checking out the location wehre the Owens had placed their motor home in Waynesville, North Carolina for the summer. The Owens daughter and husband, Cori and Lee Williams, gave Donna and Joe a surprise wedding anniversary party for their thirtieth anniversary. Friends and family gathers over the holiday for a cook out. Good time and good memories. Betty just called to say she watched a program last Wednesday night at 10 p.m. on Bullock Road in Lakeland. Its a reality show, (I had told her about the program and Heartland, one of my favorite shows.) The Tisons knew a lot of the people on the show and were familiar with the Ranch and its location. Its a good family show. Welcome New Residents Michael and Barbara Kirby are new residents to our area. Katie from Faces, Fingers and Toes also owner of Belles Bistro, told Barbara she needed to subscribe to the Putnam County Courier Journal to keep up with what is going on. So she did. Barbaras dad is a resident at Moose Haven and he loves it. Welcome to our area Kirbys. Fore I Forgot Ms. Irma Bellamy Hucks Dessertine of Crescent City had no idea what a fun ride it would be when she decided to write about her memories from the past, to tell stories to the family members who didnt get to hear the stories. She has sold 275 copies and just has a few more left. More than family members are reading the book. Its a lovely book (I treasure my copy.) Dessertine and her daughter, Myra Lord and husband David, recently spent some time in South Carolina where a lovely home was waiting for them (They spend time there quite often.) On May 2, they were there for the Blessing of the Inlet at Belin Memorial Methodist Church (the night before they had a delicious dinner at the Inlet Kitchen.) The Blessing is a special service; they were entertained by a 70 member choir from the church, plus many other choral groups. She also made a visit to other family members and the farm where Irmas father grew up. She wrote about childhood memories there in Fore I Forget also visited the local library, and found out that all of the branch libraries had her book. In June, Dessertine ew to Lexington, Kentucky to visit her son and wife, Frank and Carol, and to meet her two and a half month old great granddaughter Ellie, her parents are Audrey and Derek Sawyer. This is the rst girl grandchild in this family in 15 years so everyone was overjoyed at having a girl. The last grandchildren were four boys twelve years ago. So now the family has four generations and plenty of relatives to spoil little Ellie. Congratulations. Silent Auction Donations Kitty Miller is collecting items for the silent auction for the rst Saturday in October. More on the even later but if you have items you would be willing to part with for a worthy cause, which is the Christian Service Center in Crescent City, call Kitty at 467-2061. Flag Question Answered I have received a few calls in answer to Charlene Lansfords question of who puts the ags in the cemeteries on Independence Day or certain holidays. The Crescent City High School ROTC members under the command of Quartermaster Richard Pelehach and the V.F.W. are responsible. So when you meet any of the members dont forget to say thanks. Some of the cemeteries decorated for the rst time was Mount Tamo in Pomona Park and the Welaka Georgetown Cemetery on Beecher Springs Road. Thanks to everyone who helps with this project. Local businesses donate the money for the ags I am told. Grif ns Grandson Visits Jim and Shirley Grifns grandson, Nick Graziadio, from Seattle, Washington, has been spending time with his grandparents in Pomona Park. Also visiting is his mom, Samantha, who now lives in Boca Raton. Nick is 17 and will graduate high school next year. Miss Bessie Williams, in A Bit of Florida in the By-gone Days, refers to the early days of the citrus industry in this part of the state. At one time the cultivation, harvesting and shipping of citrus was a major contributor to the economy hereabouts. Like any agricultural endeavor, citrus culture was not without its headaches. The hospitable climate, which attracted settlers to the area, was also attractive to harmful insects, which were, and still are, a great threat to crops of any kind planted for commercial production. Miss Bessie tells us... In the rst part of the eighties (1880s), the Agricultural Department at Washington was beginning to take a very special notice of orange culture, and an entomologist was sent here to study the insect enemies of citrus trees, the scale insect having made itself very harmfully numerous by that time. This work of going about amongst citrus trees, examining leaves and bark with little lenses, and then experimenting with various sprays, etc., lled the natives and some others with great amusement and contempt. Running all over the country to hunt a bug, and be paid for it! That was a shade too ridiculous for them, but later these scoffers ocked to the entomologist for help. The life and prots of their groves were threatened by all sorts of enemies, and they were verging on despair. The war on citrus enemies has steadily continued ever since. Many acres of the landscape hereabout were planted to citrus, as the original plat of the town set aside many lots within the city for grove lots. Much acreage on both sides of Lake Crescent and in other nearby areas was devoted to the cultivation of citrus. One can easily understand how the tiny but devastating scale insect could wreak havoc, especially without the advantage of modern equipment with which to apply such sprays. After first it was though that there were three suspects but after viewing security tapes, it is confirmed that there are actually four. The suspects fled the bank with an undetermined amount of cash. The getaway vehicle was found abandoned in the orange groves on Carrier Road. The police believe that a phone call received about five minutes before the robbery about an altercation on County Road 308 was made to draw officers away from the robbery. TOGETHER WITH a 1972 CHAMPION single-wide mobile home, Its time to love yourself NOW, not when your circumstances are different! When you deepen your relationship with YOU and take the time to look at yourself with new eyes and truly honor the holiness within you, your circumstances will change with ease and grace. Your problems are a window to your success, whether youre in a mess at home, in a relationship thats frustrating, feeling a financial crunch, in a body that weighs too much, whatever, the very thing you call a problem is an opportunity to get to learn more about yourself and love who you are. Self-improvement is a lifetime path, but its a pursuit that doesnt lead to a place where everything is perfect. When you reach what you thought was your final destination, youll find that you have farther to go. I wrote that in The Sidetracked Sisters Happiness File more than 30 years ago. Well always be wanting to be better, because its human nature. Think about how fun it is to want something you know youll receive. When you do that, youre looking forward to that thing or that circumstance. I think thats why its so fun to fall in love! You want that person and you know youre going to get him or her because that person wants you too. Once you get the person, the wanting is over. The getting is never as fun as the wanting part. Since you are the only YOU on this planet, what you want is unique to you, but what isnt unique is the reason any of us wants anything. The only reason we want something is that we think it will make us feel better. Whats so interesting about this real reason is that we can feel better without having what we thought would make us feel better. Esther Hicks, one of my favorite speakers and writers told of her neighbors cat. They named him Party Cat, because whenever they had a party the cat would always come over to their house. One time when Party Cat was at one of her shindigs and was getting petted and talked to as he basked in a chair, he rolled over on his back and stretched out to get his tummy rubbed and someone asked the cat, What do you do to deserve this? Everyone laughed, because they knew that the cat deserved the love and attention just for being a cat. We are just like Party Cat. We dont have to do anything to feel better. What we can do is start practicing basking in that love we deserve for being human and being happy right now regardless of our situation. If youll start catching yourself complaining or whining about some problem and remind yourself that if Party Cat is loved just for being a cat, you are loved for just being you. Once you can feel that love, and it may take a few deep breaths and silence, remind yourself that the problem you were complaining about is just there to teach you more about yourself and help you grow and thrive. Be thankful for your problems and see each one as window to your success. A6 Courier Journal July 24, 2013 Got fax?Send or receive for only $2 per page!Fax: 386.698.1994 Questions? For the past two Saturdays, the boys football locker room at Crescent City Jr./ Sr. High School has been refurbished with the help and donations of the Palatka Lowes store and area volunteers. Lowes donated all of the materials to make the refurbishment possible. Lowes also coordinated with the 207 Burnerz Motorcycle Club of Palatka. The refurbish consisted of new paint for the walls, building new benches for the film room, repairing and making upgrades to equipment lockers and refinishing the floors throughout. Lowes store associates also volunteered their time and expertise on the project. If this helps keep just one kid in school, Im all for it, we did our job, stated Larry Lunsford, a sales associate for the Palatka Lowes. Lowes also donated two large metal locker units, so the players have a place to keep their personal belongings when dressed out for practice or at game time. The refurbish was completed just in time as the Raiders start training camp next month. Palatka The Florida Department of Health in Putnam County remind residents and visitors of the importance of protecting against mosquito-borne illnesses during the summer rainy season, which includes peak mosquito activity months. Most people that become ill will have mild symptoms including headache, fever, dizziness, and fatigue. Physicians should contact the Florida Department of Health in Putnam County if they suspect an individual may have a mosquito-borne illness. The public should remain diligent in protecting themselves from mosquito bites by following the Ds, which are: Dusk and Dawn Avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are biting. Dress Wear clothing that covers most of your skin. DEET When the potential exists for exposure to mosquitoes, repellents containing up to 30 percent DEET (N, N-diethyl-metatoluamide) are recommended. Other effective mosquito repellents include picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, and IR3535. Drainage Check around your home to rid the area of standing water, which is where mosquitoes can lay their eggs. Using repellent can help protect against being bitten by a mosquito. Follow these tips for correct repellent use: Always read label instructions for the approved usage before applying a repellent. DEET is not recommended on children younger than 2 months old. Oil of lemon eucalyptus should not be used on children less than 3 years old. Infants should be kept indoors or mosquito netting should be used over carriers when outside. Avoid applying repellents to the hands of children. Adults should apply repellent first to their own hands and then transfer it to the childs skin and clothing. Apply insect repellent to exposed skin or onto clothing, but not under clothing. Do not apply repellent to the eyes or mouth, cuts, wounds, or irritated skin. ISYOUROUTDOORSPACELOOKINGALITTLEDULL?Here are 3 quick tips to help liven up your outdoor spaceFirst, add some color. Fresh, vibrant cushions and pillows are a great way to add color and texture to your patio. Need a color theme? Add a container garden as well. Second, light up the night. Once the sun goes down its time to get your shindig started. Add string lights, tiki torches or outdoor decorative light to add ambiance and to keep the party going. Third, upgrade your grill. Whether you want a different grill or type, think about what you like. If you are a burger you are more of a BBQ fan, look into getting a smoker. For more ideas on livening up your outdoor space, visit Lowes in Palatka, located at 500 N. SR 19, or visit Lowes.com.
