The Toms RiverOcean County Chamber of Commerce has nominated area resident Tom Delaney for their Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. The nomination is due in part to Delaneys charity boxing efforts to raise money for cancer and heart disease when he lived in New Jersey. Delaney, a threetime Golden Glover in New Jersey, from 1975 to 1979, also boxed in charity events for the Boys Club in Binghamton, New York, to help raise money for the organization. Since moving to Putnam County, Delaney has volunteered for the past three years for the Putnam County Sheriffs Office Police Athletic League Boxing Team. Tom has brought a lot of knowledge of boxing to the program due to his professional boxing career, said Deputy John Brady of the Putnam County Sheriffs Office School Resource Unit. Without Toms help and dedication to the P.A.L. program and the kids in the program, stated Brady, it would have been hard to accomplish what we have in the last three years. Who is Penelope? Penelope is a ninefoot tall purple chicken of course. It all started last week, when three young men stole Penelope, tied a rope around her and took turns riding her as they drug her down the road. The three men were arrested for theft, after which the Putnam County Sheriffs office booked them and put out a news release. Sounds pretty simple, story over right? Nope, since then the three chicken thieves have had their faces shown around the world. The story has made international news. Running in newspapers, news web sites and local TV news stations as far away as California, Toronto, Canada and the UK. Its and interesting story alright, no one could make something like this up. Said David Biggers, the owner of Penelope and Biggers Apiaries in San Mateo. Biggers Apiaries is a small roadside stand that sells local honey and produce on the side of Highway 100. The stand has been in Biggers family since 1947 and is best known by locals for its honor payment box and its two ninefoot tall purple and yellow chickens of course. Biggers is no stranger to this sort of thing; back in 2007 he was the owner of a roadside produce stand in Barberville, that also had a nine-foot chicken stolen and created a local news buzz. Ive had reporters calling me all week, said Biggers One as far away as Iowa. Vickie Carlstrom, owner of Bloomers Garden Center on Highway 17 in San Mateo, has also noticed quite an increase of traffic at her business since the incident. It seems that this whole purple chicken business has created a new local celebrity of sorts. Who you may ask? Why none other than Purple Pete, who just so happens to be Penelopes twin brother. As you might have guessed, Purple Pete is also a nine-foot tall purple chicken in San Mateo. Because you dont see that many nine-foot purple chickens, people have been mistaking Purple Pete for Penelope. People have been stopping by all week taking pictures with Purple Pete, said Carlstrom Someone even left him flowers and a balloon. The Saturday following the theft of Penelope, Carlstrom found Purple Pete knocked over in front of her store. Fortunately Purple Pete was not damaged and is standing tall again. As for Penelope, well she may not be so lucky. When asked if he planned on repairing Penelope, Biggers told us he was not sure. I have several others, Biggers stated, just not any more purple ones. facebook.com/putnamcountycourierjournal Fowl Story Makes International News Mike Jones Staff Writer Celebration Committee MeetingIf there are a hundred or more ways to say THANK YOU! please consider this one of them. When my oldest brother, J.J., got married; his bride already had a little boy. This boys name was Michael and my brother reared him as though he were his own. Sadly, he never got around to legally adopting the kid which caused some serious problems in the distant future. Michael was less than one year younger than me but, officially in the family, he was my nephew. My siblings and I knew the truth about Michaels situation but not one of us ever dared to say a word to Michael about it. Although we were just kids, my Dad had made it clear that the subject of Michaels heritage was NOT to be mentioned. We minded our father! The very fact that Michael grew to adulthood thinking he was a Harris while all of us kids knew better is somewhat amazing in and of itself. Its also a testament to how scared each of us was of incurring our Dads wrath. Many years later, Michael decided to join the US Army and it was at this time that his mother had to produce a birth certificate. As Ive already said, my brother never got around to adopting Michael or telling him the truth. The truth came out, of course, when the birth certificate came out! Michael was devastated to say the least. Evidently, Michael had always felt that his oldest brother seemed favored by his Dad. Now he realized his suspicions had merit and it hurt him. He felt betrayed and fatherless. During WWII, there were many young Navy boys who were trained here in the Crescent City area. It was one of those fast talking boys who took advantage of Michaels mother. She was just a young girl from the Junction and not at all worldly. After getting her pregnant, the Navy boy shipped out and was never heard from again. I dont believe she even knew his last name. However, she took care of her child and reared him as the oldest of six siblings. He never knew that they were half-siblings or that I wasnt really his uncle. After Michael left us all and joined the Army, he never came back. He knew I wasnt his uncle but because I hadnt told him the truth he hated me and the entire family. He kept in touch with his mother through the years and lived in Washington State after the Army service was over. I never saw or heard from Michael again until a few years ago when I attended his mothers funeral. Although my brother had long since died and Michaels mother had remarried, we still regarded her as a sister-in-law. She was a good woman who was very much loved by all of us. Our meeting was awkward but it was nice to see one another again. I told you all of that just so I could tell you about Michael and me going for a walk in the woods near the Weeki Wachi River. We were both about twelve and thirteen. The family was new to the Weeki Wachi area and like boys are prone to do, Mike and I went exploring. There was an old dirt road that just went into the woods. We had heard from locals that it was called the Boy Scout Camp Road. The road was obviously seldom traveled. We had to climb over a locked gate to hike the road. Of course, we climbed quickly over the gate and ran far enough that we couldnt be seen. Our fathers were fishing in the Gulf that day and our mothers and the other kids were doing their thing. Mike and I were exploring. As we walked, Mike felt the call of nature. Mikes mind worked a bit differently than mine. Where I would have simply found some moss and gone behind a tree for privacy, Mike had to be original. He climbed a tree, found two limbs that forked comfortably and there he sat and took care of business. When Mike was finished, he reached for some moss and in so doing caused the limb to snap and he fell directly into his recent accomplishment. I had never seen anything so funny in my life. After we recovered from Mikes adventure we continued on a short way and came upon the camp site. There were no buildings, just a nice clearing at the edge of the river landing. It was really a gorgeous spot. We were hot (and Mike rather needed a bath) so we decided to take a swim in those crystal clear spring waters. We stripped off our clothes and dove in. There was even a rope which hung out over the water. We were having a blast when all of a sudden a boat floated around a curve with two adult couples in it. They were just paddling and we hadnt heard a sound. At this point, the river was barely twenty feet wide. We were trapped! We couldnt get out and staying under water did no good. As stated, the water was really clear, cold spring water. So, there we were each trying to get behind the other as the adults floated past in complete merriment. Thankfully, the water was cold which made hiding behinds our hands much easier. That pretty well covers all of my youthful skinny-dipping days which I plan to share publicly. However, I will be sharing a great deal more about growing up with my nephew Michael. As Ive said, Mike wasnt a Harris and his brain (or lack of one) made that obvious to everyone but Michael. Mike was entertaining, to say the least.A Walk in the WoodsLloyd Harris Local crime hot spots will be listed here weekly. Rosa Palmer Crescent City Chat Courage to Stand Up to FriendsDaris Howard When I stood up to my friends, defending a new girl at my school, the janitor, Mr. Bandon, saw the whole thing. He told me that it could take more courage to stand up to friends than to enemies. That was when he showed me a picture in his office of men from his World War II battalion, and shared the story of Private Johnson, the man he said he admired most. Their battalion had fought across Europe, incurring heavy losses in the Battle of the Bulge. As the Germans ran out of supplies and started to retreat, the Americans set up a base camp. The supply trucks hadnt yet come, and what food they had was moldy and stale. They threw away the worst, and ate what they could. Most of the local Germans were starving, having what little food they owned taken from them for the army. That night some of them snuck into the camp to take the rotten food that had been thrown away, but they were captured. The next day, the Colonel who was in command, still angry at the losses his battalion had suffered, ordered the Germans to be shot. Mr. Bandon and Private Johnson were among those chosen for the firing squad. The Germans were brought out. They had suffered great deprivation, and most of them were so thin that their flesh hung loosely over their bodies. They were all just boys and old men because the fighting age men had been taken for war. The Germans were lined up, frightened and begging for their lives, but the Colonel felt little mercy. He gave the orders. Ready! Aim! That was when Private Johnson lowered his rifle and spoke. Sir, I cant shoot them. The Colonel was furious at this insubordination. He had Private Johnson step forward. You will do as you are told, the Colonel ordered. Private Johnson shook his head. I cant. It isnt right. They are starving and just trying to find food for their families. They took nothing except what we threw away. The Colonel stood there, seething in his anger. When he finally spoke, he nearly spit out his words. They are the enemy. If you cant do your job, then you can take their place. You have a choice. Either do as you are commanded, or release them and be shot yourself. Now, get back in line! But Private Johnson didnt get back in line. He walked to the Germans while everyone stared after him. He pulled his knife, and the German prisoners trembled. But he didnt hurt them. Instead, he cut the ropes that held them. He then motioned for them to go. They stood for a moment until he motioned to them again, then they ran off as fast as they could. Then he did something no one there would ever forget. He stepped to the wall where the Germans had stood, bowed his head in prayer for a moment, then looked up and said, Im ready. He closed his eyes and waited. The Colonel had not expected this, and his subdued voice quivered with emotion. Ready. Some of the men raised their guns to the ready, but most refused, Mr. Bandon being one of them. Aim, came the next command. Private Johnson closed his eyes to wait. He started to tremble from fear, but ready to die rather than kill innocent people. Mr. Bandon closed his eyes, unable to watch. But no order came. When Mr. Bandon finally opened his eyes, the Colonel had stepped in front of the guns. He had an expression on his face that showed the emotion he felt at the display of courage Private Johnson had shown. The Colonel motioned for the men to lower their rifles, and then he turned to Private Johnson. Johnson, the Colonel bellowed, you have a new assignment. Sir? Private Johnson questioned. You choose yourself a few men to help you, and you make sure that any food we are disposing of is distributed to anyone who can use it. That is an order. Do you understand? Private Johnson smiled. Yes, Sir. Mr. Bandon joined Private Johnson in this endeavor, and they became good friends. So, you see, Mr. Bandon told me, it can take even more courage to stand up to friends than it does to enemies. If I want the unfiltered, God honest news Fox News. AnonymousCrescent City

With the diverse means of transportation available to us today, most of them in place all of our lives, it is hard to imagine the impact of early changes to transportation on the local citizenry. Miss Bessie Williams, in A Bit of Florida in the ByGone Days, gives us a glimpse into the reaction of locals to the coming of the railroad. When the Jacksonville, Tampa and Key West Railroad was projected, it was hard for us to believe that such a thing as a railroad could roll through these woods. One who had not experienced the sense of complete isolation and far-away-ness that living in a forest county, long distances from railroads and telegraph poles engenders, can not realize how strange, how impossible railroad tracks, winding along though the pine woods seemed. Yet there it was. They did not seem to belong. Cattle, hogs, mules yes. But this endless thing of steel, this seemed like an emanaion from big cities -how could it be here out in the boundless woods, where the pines were whispering? But it was there. Then an engine whistle split the silence and a train clanged by on those tracks. One was glad -yes but not all glad. It seemed almost an intrusion. July 18, 1963 Crescent City Is Almost Scene of a Tragic Train Wreck Quick thinking and action on the part of Frank Ellis no doubt save Crescent City from a disastrous train accident, July 4 when two cars of pulp wood became disconnected from a freight train in the path of a southbound limited. Its easy to turn a dorm room into home with some basic and stylish accessories. Follow these tips to make shopping for and setting up student living quarters smooth and successful: Prepare Ahead Once a student receives a housing assignment, he or she should connect with future roommates. Lots of decisions need to be made. Decide ahead of time what to share, and if students want to coordinate dcor. Look for a retailer that can help you stay organized and on budget. For example, Bed Bath & Beyond offers college shopping checklists with separate lists for dorms and apartments. You can create a custom checklist online. You can also refer to their Find My College, page to determine whether your dorm has rules and regulations prohibiting certain decorations and supplies. Use a gift registry to give family and friends ideas for gifts. Be Comfortable Dorm room mattresses typically offer little support. Build a better bed by adding a layer of comfort with a memory foam topper or ber bed. With all that foot trafc in dorm rooms, its also a good idea to guard your mattress against bed bugs with a mattress protector. Upgrade a drab room and add color by layering on a stylish comforter set. Think Small Students will likely have less space than to which theyre accustomed, points out Jessica Joyce, a spokesperson for Bed Bath & Beyond. To create more room, use storage and organizational items under the bed, over the door and in closets. Over-the-door is a great place for a mirror, storage for shoes or caps, an extra closet rod or hamper. Some simple and stylish organizational tools can help, such as the Cube Grid and Rolling Carts with Drawers. Increase wardrobe potential with a double hanging rod and Slim Grips Hangers, which allow students to hang more clothing per unit of space. And multi-functional Bed Risers with an AC Outlet and USB Charger can maximize under bed space, while providing a grounded charging station. Be Stylish Make a dorm room home by adding personality. Use accent rugs to warm up concrete oors. Reminders of home are a nice touch. Decorate walls with Dry Erase Message Board Decals, or 18 inch Bicycle Wheel Collages adorned with photos of family and friends. Make it Easy Ease your moving day load by picking up certain items near school. Use a free service, such as Bed Bath & Beyonds Shop Here, Pick Up There, program. Students and parents can shop for essentials at a store near home and have everything ready to pick up at a store near campus. This is especially helpful for students arriving by plane or train. For more ideas and tips visit the Shop for College tab at www. bedbathandbeyond. com/shopforcollege. With the right gear and solutions, setting up a functional, comfortable and stylish dorm room or off-campus apartment can be easy.Special to theCourier Journal Visit Us At: www.saravelselfstorage.comCertain restrictions apply.18 different size units available with computerized gate access. I described in detail how the exteriors and interiors were appointed, the distinctive particulars of American Queen Anne design, and the way they were painted and furnished in their heyday period of the 1880s to 1910. The Society asked me so many questions that I knew they were interested in the subject. A few days later it occurred to me that many Crescent City residents live in historic homes. I thought to tell you a little about the approaches interior designers and decorators take when entrusted to help in the restoration and refurbishing of Victorian homes. I grew up in central Pennsylvania and the nearby big city of Williamsport was, at the height of the Victorian era, known as the Lumber Capital of the World. The rich lumber barons built big, beautiful, and ornate homes. I saw them often, admired them greatly, and even lived in a Classical Renaissance-style home which had been made into three flats. The woodwork and stairway in that home were spectacular. The windows were leaded or stained glass, the highceilinged rooms were large, and there was even a maids room and a back stair for the maid to use. The exterior was gracious from all sides, with large windows, pillars and porches on the first and second floors. While it is not necessary to be absolutely true to the homes era or style when redecorating or refurbishing, it is necessary to respect the design and architecture. For example, a Queen Anne home need not be painted in the preferred five to seven different colors and have lace curtains at every window, nor does the later Craftsman style need to be all beige and green exterior and William Morris designed wallpaper for the interiors. However, the Queen Anne, to keep her royal status, must be painted in at least three appropriate and correctly placed colors. The Craftsman needs to maintain its sturdy dignity and eschew pastels. Some of the particulars of Queen Anne homes that preserve their exterior good looks are suitable colors, gracious porches, and landscaping. These are three important details that many homeowners do not understand well. When colors and landscape fail to meet the mark, the home will look shabby and undistinguished. Porches, entry doors and window frames need to be close to the authentic style and size to look good. If a porch has been removed because it was in disrepair and the replacement is not done in the proper scale, the whole exterior will be spoiled. Interiors are a bit easier to remodel without losing too much of the authentic style. One of the first redos is a larger kitchen, and that is followed by updating the bathroom. Often old homes have either no closets or very small closets. Careful floor planning and having an engineer tell you what walls can be removed are absolutely necessary to achieve larger rooms and closets. For most homeowners who want to restore an aging beauty, the work is a labor of love, and often there is a lot of labor! For me, whether helping a homeowner with a redecorating project or doing the interiors of a new home, it becomes a love affair for me, too. I get to know my clients very well and to care about them. Their project is very important to me, and I am totally invested in ensuring the perfect outcome for them. Designers, when redoing a historic home, will carefully research the period and the style of the home. This indepth study of both the interior and exterior for colors, floor plans, elevations, details of trim and facades, and even the landscaping is necessary whether the designer is doing an accurate refurbishing or tweaking it for a fresh, modern interpretation. With a carefully updated design of a historic home that appreciates the past, the result will be a comfortable and stylish home. I left my husband home alone last week and went to Seattle to babysit two of my grandchildren. I left a freezer full of food, some to cook from scratch (scratch that option, Terry can cook rice and boil eggs) and soups and entres he could simply defrost and heat. I also left salad makings in the fridge and there were nuts and low carb treats in a little basket for him. I called Terry the first night. Ring, ring, ring? Hello? How ya doin? Good, Im watchin the Gladiator. (Terry premeditated a murder mystery and gory movie stack of DVDs to watch while I was gone.) Oh, thats good. Whadya eat for dinner? Vegetables and fruit. Uh, like broccoli and berries? Nope, corn chips and wine. Corn chips and wine? Honey youve got to eat better than that! I will. I just got to eatin the chips and I sorta filled up on em. After three nights of vegetables and fruits Terry got tired of that meal and ate a little better the rest of the week (so Im told). As weve talked more about our individual experiences while away from each other, several restaurants crept into his conversations. I was sort of jealous. We dont eat out much because I love to cook and because Im a good cook, restaurants have a hard time competing with me. Ill think as I look over a menu, Dont want that, I can make it better, thats not as good as homemade, thats too much money, I can cook it for an eighth of that price. I do love to eat in restaurants however, but I follow my KISS rule (keep it special sweety) so its once a week at the most and I look for things I dont like to cook like fish. (I dont like it stinking up my house and Terry says I can only cook it the night before garbage collection day.) Someone once said, Hunger is the best sauce. I have found that I enjoy being hungry because it makes my meal taste better when its time to eat. A snack robs me of the sauce produced by hunger! As the hour approaches for a meal, instead of eating a snack, I let my hunger come into play for the sole purpose of enjoying it. In order to play with this, you have to intend to enjoy the feeling of being hungry. By playing my hunger game Ive learned the difference between real hunger and false hunger brought on by habit. Habit hunger is what you experience after youve eaten dinner and youre watching TV and you think, popcorn sounds good, or I wonder if theres any ice cream left. Youre really not hungry youre just wanting to eat while you watch the program. If you want to play with your hunger, try this: skip lunch and dont snack in the afternoon. Youll start really being hungry around 2 p.m. and hunger thoughts (I think its your inner child) will start messing with you. Youll be minding your own business and youll find yourself in the kitchen without remembering you walked in there. If youre at work youll catch yourself diving into your purse for money for the snack machine. Your sense of smell will be acute and youll smell peoples gum, and if you take a walk in the area of restaurants youll become like a Bassett Hound ruled by your nose. If you want to try this be sure to be in full control of your portions at dinner and remember to eat mindfully or you could turn this learning experience into an over-eating session. All this talk of food is making me hungry. Dinner is two hours away. Im playing with my hunger. Im playing with my hunger. Im playing with my hunger. Arts Council of Greater Palatka invites you to join them for a pleasurable evening of music by Dim Lights on Saturday, July 20. The Arts Council is always happy to have Dim lights join them at the Larimer Arts Center, located at 216 Reid St. in Palatka. They deliver a great evening of entertainment and fun. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and doors open at 7 p.m., so you can come enjoy some light refreshments, coffee and view the art exhibit by the Orange Park Arts Guild Inc. before the performance. Dim Lights is a group of four Gainesville area musicians playing lively down-home music. Ned Stewart, on guitar, has a fabulous voice and picking style. Karan Newman, on mandolin, fills in with a few vocals of her own and adds harmony to Stewarts songs. Gerald Snyder is another fabulous singer. He adds a nice blend of ballads, bluegrass, and folk songs. Chuck Spitzner fills in the spaces and provides a rhythmic strain with the upright bass, oldtime songs and instrumentals. Live at the Larimer is made possible through partnerships with The Arts Council of Greater Palatka and The Putnam County Tourist Development Council The Arts Council of Greater Palatka is the designated Local Arts Agency for Putnam County and is a 501C3 non profit. On Monday, July 8, following a dinner of barbecue chicken and roasted corn, the members of Lake Lodge # 72 held a Fellowcraft Degree for Rick LeBlanc. All of the officers were dressed in 18th century attire to commemorate the early ceremonies of Lodges in American. Members of Melrose Lodge #89, Raulerson and Ford, assisted as Chaplin and Senior Deacon. The Fellowcraft Degree is the second of three ceremonies that a new member must pass through before becoming a Master Mason; i.e. Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft and Master Mason. Following each Degree, a series of catechisms must be learned and committed to memory before preceding to the next Degree. The catechisms hope to teach a moral code and the allegory of Freemasonry, to teach each new member the integrity and the fraternal bond that is held by Freemasons across American and in the world. Contrary to some belief, the Freemasons are not part of any plot to take over the world. The ceremonies are the only part of Freemasonry that are secret, and the language and text of those ceremonies has not changed since the time of George Washington. Few Lodges conduct those ceremonies in 18th century clothing, and that is what makes Lake Lodge #72 so unique. One must be a Master Mason before becoming a member of the Shriners whose hospitals across the United States help burned and crippled children. Master of the Lodge, Henry Smith, invites those interested in Freemasonry to come by and visit Lake Lodge #72 on the first and third Monday of each month at 112 Shrine Club Road in the Lake Como area. Come for dinner and bring your wife! Dinner is served at 6:30 p.m. and the Stated Communications begin at 7:30 p.m. July 17, 2013 COURIER JOURNAL Section B After watching some of the semi nals and nals of the Wimbeldon tennis tournament, we probably should pay umbrage to the skills of athletes that are sort of under the radar when it comes recognizing talent. I played some tennis early on, but like other athletic endeavors I tried, my interest waned for various and sundry reasons. I always recognized one thing about the game, and that was it is not nearly as easy as it looks. For one thing, being in good physical condition is a must if you want to be competitive, and if you dont really care about that, this sport is forgiving for awhile, but not for long if you are interested in playing at the next level, which could be simply playing in a league or on a regular basis. Getting back to the Wimbledon, it was evident that both men and women were in excellent condition to take on three and four hour matches in many cases, then turn around the next day for another grind. Not all matches are necessarily long, but even the shorter ones can sure be taxing, or it looks that way. This is not a game of simply swinging a racket and punching the ball over the net. It is being able to handle the racket in such a manner that you know exactly where the ball will go while sprinting full speed in some instances. (Please dont get the idea that these are the observations of an expert in the eld, because they arent and Im not) Anyway, the thought that Serena Williams would be upset by the eventual winner on the womens side was not there because she had won 34 straight matches and was the odds on favorite to win at Wimbledon. However, I noticed on some of the replays that her opponent (not sure of her name) was no shrinking violet by any judgment. First of all, she was a tall and on the muscular side, she had a real quick rst serve which was generally in court, and was quick on her feet. So she offered real competition for Serena, who has dominated her opponents with her rst serve and overall physical strength. I think she was off her game a bit, no doubt, but her opponent played a part in that by cross courting her and keeping her off balance. On the mens side, I did watch most of the nal between Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic. Djokovic was the favorite, but Murray, who has been improving his game steadily over the last few years, so Im told, took him in straight sets and I thought handled him with no sweat. One of the talking heads (I believe it was John McEnroe) said before the match that Djokovics plan was coming in after his serve and doing the volley thing. That was his strong point and that he, McEnroe, hoped that Murray would counter that with baseline play and long rallies, which is what happened. Djokovic had many more unforced errors during the long rallies than Murray and that turned out to be the difference. The various division races in MLB are interesting. My favorites to be in the Wolrd Series, the Red Sox and Braves, are leading their respective divisions by anywhere from four to six games. So thats good for me, right? It is, but Im real nervous about how those two are playing right now. Both are having injury problems to key players and are playing about .500 ball over the last month or so, at least the Braves have been. The only reason they have maintained their leads is that the second place teams in both divisions are playing worse. In the case of the Braves, its the Washington Nats, and with the Red Sox, the Baltimore Orioles. Actually, the Rays are closing in on the Sox and I would not be surprised if they caught them in the next 30 days.
