Mr. S. S. Josephs
2110 24th Ave. North
Nashville 8, Tennessee

Dear Mr. Josephs:

Last week while reading the Ebony, I saw an article about your work
with the Southern Publishing Association. I told Welles about the
article and we both agree that the article does justice to your ability
as an accountant. We are proud of you and glad that you were once our
teacher.

We know that you would like to hear about what the members of our
class are doing. We have kept in touch with some of them. George Miller
is bookkeeper to Andr6s De Le6n and Clarence Stuart, who have gone into
the real-estate business. They have opened an office on 7th St. and
Bolivar Ave. and they are completing a building project in Puerto Pilon.

Cyril Edwards is a teacher at Rainbow City High School and Eleanor
Brown is successor to Miss Peat who left recently for the States.
Latest reports say that Cyril teaches a new course in psychology. Some
weeks ago I went to an art display at the Tropical Club and saw some
lovely paintings done by Rudolph Simons. His best work there was a
portrait of his wife, Ernestina Archbold. All who saw the portrait
remarked that it was very life-like.

Ruth Blackman has just completed a correspondence course in interior
decorating. She will be leaving shortly for San Francisco, California.
Ruth and I went shopping yesterday at La Democracia. We were greeted by
Norma Hicks and Hermnna Dawkins who are the proprietors. While chatting,
we learned that Barbara Melbourne and Linda Newland are responsible for
the designing of the lovely dresses on display. We bought twin gowns
for the biggest concert of the season--a double piano recital by
Norma Brown and Merdell Burke. June King will be a guest artist at
the Brown-Burke recital which will be held at the Presidencia Theater.
As you know, June married Llewelyn Jolliffe, who practices law.

John Ashley is now judge of the night courts. He has curbed a lot
of juvenile delinquency in the city of Colon. Through his efforts and
those of Alman Jones, councilman, Colon now has a fully equipped youth
center at 4th and Bolivar Ave. Do you remember how Randolph Maxwell

CLA55 PftOI'HEC V vi Pf COA V1 4 QIAf1

used to talk about getting in the "monies"? Well, he handles quite a
lot now that he and Sidney "Ash" Gordon are tellers at the Chase
National Bank.

Several of our boys are tied up in one way or another with the new
Oil Refinery at Pilon. Henry Wedderburn, Donald Peart, Donald Niles,
Esteban Lowe, and Bernard Reid work in various departments at the
plant. Ariff Ennever and Levy Goddard are engineers there also.
Bernard's wife, Marva King, has a bouncing baby boy. Last week Bernard
gave each of the boys a traditional cigar. He has been going around
with the "proud father" look ever since. Ruth Forbes and Maria L6pez
are graduate nurses. Ruth is at Coco Solo Hospital and Maria works at
Gorgas.

Last night, I went to a party at the Ashley' s home on 8th and Melendez
Ave. John's wife, the former Grace Gittens, is expecting her third
child. The guest of honor was Miss Merlyn Scott, M.D. who recently
received her degree from the University of Panama, majoring in medicine.
Dr. Scott is planning to open her private office in Panama City in the
near future with Gloria Rodney as her secretary. The party got under
way as the guests started to arrive. Among those present were Reginald
Denny and his wife, Yvonne Inniss; Alman Jones and his wife, Rosalee
Forde; Eunice Williams and Monica Quinlan, telephone operators;
Barrington McLean and his wife, Thelma Rennie. Barry is a commercial
artist. Hubert McLeod, Earl Escalona and Theophil Laurie who are
leaving for the States next Friday, were there also. Hubert is an Air
Force pilot, while Earl and Theophil are major league baseball players.
Earl plays for the Brooklyn Dodgers and Theophil has joined the Cleveland
Indians. Hilton Brathwaite escorted Gertrude King to the party. They
make to all appearances, a happy couple, and it is rumoured that wedding
bells will soon be ringing in that direction. Walford McFarlane, life
of every party, introduced a new dance step of his own that includes
Mambo, Cha Cha Cha, Rhumba and Waltz. You can imagine our delight when
he and Lucille Saums staged a special show for our benefit.

We were treated to free tickets by Franklin Dale, promoter for the
bout coming this weekend-Carlos "Kimo" Thorne versus Harold "Jalope"
Smith at the Colon Arena. Arnold Alphonse climaxed an enjoyable
evening with a clarinet solo interspersed by so many squeaks that no
one could distinguish the melody.

We hope that when this letter reaches you everyone in your family
will be enjoying excellent health. Goodbye for now; the class of '57
says "good luck and God bless you and yours".

Sincerely yours,

S Wilma Blackman de Andrews
