RBIDUC=TION. FARM DISPOSITION, AND VALUE OF PRINCIPAL CROPS
;.. .. ...

B"o. c*co of a seris of reports relating to farm disposition of crops,
o....ok eand livestock products, This report includes estimates for grains, hay,

fruits and nuts, and some other commodities. Estimates for cotton and

on eed were published with the April 28 cotton report; those for tobacco,

i r beets and sugarcane for sugar will be published in the General Crop Report

usMa 10.

I.: The production estimates shown in this report are the same as published in the

F ember 1943 Annual Summary of Crop Production, except for some fruits, in which

instances footnotes indicate revisions since that time. Estimates of farm disposi-

Stion relate to that portion of the crop used or to be used for the designated pur-

:..' pose and do not include purchases for such purposes. Portions of crops shovm as

f ted to livestock represent quantities fed on farms which produced the crop in the

givLen year and do not represent total quantities of crops ultimately used for live-

Setock feeding. The producer feeds varying amounts of certain crops on the farm

wh ere grown and reports sales, actual or expected, regardless of the final use that
1942 and
i my be made of such sales off the farm. In the /1943 crop years considerable quan-
,: titles of wheat were sold to farmers by the Commodity Credit Corporation for use

." 1 livestock feed. To the extent that this wheat was purchased and fed by wheat

6-r.ovwrs, it appears in the estimates of wheat fed. For the principal foad crops

jt) grain used for fooeed and seed is a residual and (production less household use

;..and sales) does not include grain purchased for such purposes. Corn shown as "sold"

fro U. farms my later be used for feed or seed on other farms in the sane State or
tss.
d other States.

3"This report was prepared by the staff of the Crop Reporting Board. Much of the
baic ~data was gathered by thit Agricultural Statisticians in charge of the field
W tft*coi. Thi report is a joint pr6duot of the field and WVashington office per-
i soisal. Tho estlintos for grains and hay woro proonrod by Charles E. BurkhcrLd,

The season average prices for 1942 crops are, in most cases, the estimatai

month prices (published currently in "Agricultural Prices) weighted by the

mated quantities sold in each month of the crop marketing season. Prices

1943 crops are based on mid-month prices for the months from the beginning

crop marketing season through March 1944. Season average prices for popcorn.

broomcorn, sugarcane for sirup, maple products, hops, many of the fruit and

crops and most of the grass and cover crop seeds, are based primarily on *pefl0

price surveys. For some crops., such as sugarcane sirup (except Louisiana),

ghum sirup and velvetbeans, prices are season average prices as reported De1
A

The value of sales and value of home consumption for each crop represents the

signated quantity multiplied by the season average price per unit of measure,

like manner, the value of production is obtained by applying the season average

price of the portion sold to total production, or production having value, a#.t4i'

case may be. These value estimates should not be confused with cash income' whi6

relates to the calendar year, irrespective of the year of production.

For a complete index of the contents of this report see page 62. -

Revised estimates of farm disposition for a series of years are being released:

separate reports for individual crops or groups of crops. These reports have

ready been published for peanuts, apples, pears, grapes, and cherries.

The estimates of farm disposition of crops are based upon data collected from
many sources. Sales have been checked by enumerations, such as reports of pro. j
cessors, or by records of handlings, such as shipments by truck, railroads. 4
and steamships. Many items of farm use are estimated from returns for individ
ual farms from special disposition inquiries relating to individual crops. I4 ^St;i
these inquiries farmers were asked to report the quantities of the crops pro- in:-
duced and the quantities used on the farm for each purpose. For some crops, ...
sales are estimated directly by asking farmers to report quantities produced., i.
and quantities sold or to be sold. .
