Dear Sir. & Friend

I am endeavoring to get up the data for a history Of Gainesville its

early settlers and leading events. I have waited thinking that some

older than myself and mere eonversant *ith the fasts would write it

up. but they do not seem to do so, hence I have undertaken it,and I

find that it is a greater undertaking than one would suppose, as

most of the old people have passed away, knowing that you belong too

one of the oldest families and yourself are one of the oldest set-

tlers. t have written you and would be obliged if you will answer

the questions found on the enclosed pages, and give me any farther

information that you may possess touching the matters enquired about,

I will be pleased to give you a copy of the book when it is printed,

with the kindest regrds

Your's truly

SIn our last we hkve traced our story down to the location of

Gainesville in 1854, the building of the Court House in 1856, and the
holding of the first term of the Circuit Cawtt held in Dec. 1856. .

.It might be interesting to know that the town of Gainesville was

S laid off on one hundred and three and on-fourth acres of land, ao- :::

S quired by the board of County Conmmisinners from Maj. Jas. B. Bail&ey i

anid from the heirs of Nehemiah Brush, at a cost of Six hundred and

Sforty-two and fifty-oue-hundredths dollars. Which was laid off and

platted, and the lots sold to private individuals. A IM1-qrI
SIt would no doubt be interesting to know the nmnes of some of the

""4 early settlers- they were quite a good many people who bought lots

S built upon them and resided here, while there were quite a good many
who bought lots who did not resided here at the time. Among h who 1
